We investigate zero-temperature plasmon modes in a double-layer bilayer graphene structure under a perpendicular electrostatic bias. The numerical results demonstrate that there exist two collective modes which are undamped in the long wavelength limit. The finite potential bias decreases remarkably the plasmon energy in a wide range of wave-vector and makes plasmon branches become Landau damped at a higher wave-vector as compared to unbiased case. We find that the dependence of plasmon dispersions on the system parameters such as the inter-layer separation and carrier density is similar in two cases with and without electrostatic bias.
In this comment we show that some equations and results of the paper titled "Dielectric screening and plasmons in AA-stacked bilayer graphene" are not correct. Furthermore, we present our results which seems to be more correct.
AB-stacked bilayer graphene with a tunable electronic bandgap in excess of the optical phonon energy presents an interesting active medium, and we consider such theoretical possibility in this work. We argue the possibility of a highly resonant optical gain in the vicinity of the asymmetry gap. Associated with this resonant gain are strongly amplified plasmons, plasmons with negative group velocity and superluminal effects, as well as directional leaky modes.
We report experimental signatures of plasmonic effects due to electron tunneling between adjacent graphene layers. At sub-nanometer separation, such layers can form either a strongly coupled bilayer graphene with a Bernal stacking or a weakly coupled double-layer graphene with a random stacking order. Effects due to interlayer tunneling dominate in the former case but are negligible in the latter. We found through infrared nano-imaging that bilayer graphene supports plasmons with a higher degree of confinement compared to single- and double-layer graphene, a direct consequence of interlayer tu…
Twisted bilayer graphene with tiny rotation angles have drawn significant attention due to the observation of the unconventional superconducting and correlated insulating behaviors. In this paper, we employ a full tight-binding model to investigate collective excitations in twisted bilayer graphene near magic angle. The polarization function is obtained from the tight-binding propagation method without diagonalization of the Hamiltonian matrix. With the atomic relaxation considered in the simulation, damped and undamped interband plasmon modes are discovered near magic angle under both room te…
We present a theoretical study of the modification of the near-field radiative heat transfer due to phonon-plasmon coupling in bilayer systems made of a doped semiconductor and a polar dielectric. By tuning the surface-plasmon mode of the former material in resonance with the phonon modes of the latter one, the near-field spectral radiative heat transfer can be suppressed in a frequency band gap. We distinguish between the interlayer mode coupling within each bilayer and the intragap one between the two bilayers. We elucidate the role of each of them in the formation of the band gap and we det…
We have theoretically studied the collective response properties of the two-dimensional chiral electron gas in bilayer graphene within the random phase approximation. The cooperation of external controlling factors like perpendicular electric bias, temperature, doping, and substrate background provides great freedom to manipulate the dynamic dielectric function and the low-energy plasmon dispersion of the system. Intriguing situations with potential application are systematically explored and discussed. Extra undamped plasmon modes might emerge under electric bias. They have almost zero group …
Gapless spectrum of graphene allows easy spatial separation of electrons and holes with an external in-plane electric field. Guided collective plasmon modes can propagate along the separation line, whose amplitude decays with the distance to it. Their spectrum and direction of propagation can be controlled with the strength and direction of in-plane electric field. In case of a bilayer graphene additional control is possible by the perpendicular electric field that opens a gap in the band spectrum of electrons. We investigate guided plasmon spectra in bilayer p-n junctions using hydrodynamics …
We study the collective electronic excitations in metallic single- and bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) using time dependent density functional theory in the random phase approximation. For very small momentum transfers (below $q\approx0.02$~Å$^{-1}$) the plasmon dispersion follows the $\sqrt{q}$ behavior expected for free electrons in two dimensions. For larger momentum transfer the plasmon energy is significantly red shifted due to screening by interband transitions. At around $q\approx 0.1$ Å$^{-1}$ the plasmon enters the dissipative electron-hole continuum and the plasmon d…
We numerically calculate the optical conductivity of twisted graphene bilayers within the continuum model. To obtain the imaginary part, we employ the regularized Kramers-Kronig relation allowing us to discuss arbitrary twist angles, chemical potential and temperature. We find that the Drude weight $D$ as function of the chemical potential $μ$ closely follows the shell structure of twisted bilayer displayed by the density of states. For certain angles, this results in a transport gap D=0 at finite $μ$. We also discuss the loss function which, for low doping, is characterized by acoustic interb…
Plasma oscillations in doped graphene bilayer at zero temperature has been investigated. Bias voltage effect on the dispersion curve for plasmon in bigraphene has been studied in random phase approximation. The possibility of controlling of curvature of dispersion curve for plasmon by changing of bias voltage has been shown. The dependence of this curvature on the bias voltage has been predicted to have the nonmonotonous character. Namely the existence of breaking point for such dependence has been found out. The bias voltage corresponding to the breaking point is shown to increase with free c…
We investigate the dispersion relation and damping of plasmon modes in a bilayer-monolayer graphene heterostructure with carrier densities and at zero temperature within the random-phase-approximation taking into account the nonhomogeneity of the dielectric background of the system. We derive analytical expressions for plasmon frequencies by using long wavelength expansion of response and bare Coulomb interaction functions. We show that optical plasmon dispersion curve of the bilayer-monolayer system lies slightly below that of double-layer graphene (DLG) and the acoustic one lies much lower t…
Topological domain walls in dual-gated gapped bilayer graphene host edge states that are gate- tunable and valley polarized. Here we predict that plasmonic collective modes can propagate along these topological domain walls even at zero bulk density, and possess a markedly different character from that of bulk plasmons. Strikingly, domain wall plasmons are extremely long-lived, with plasmon lifetimes that can be orders of magnitude larger than the transport scattering time in the bulk. While most pronounced at low temperatures, long domain wall plasmon lifetimes persist even at room temperatur…
Tripartite Phonon-Magnon-Plasmon Coupling, Parametric Amplification, and Formation of a Phonon-Magnon-Plasmon Polariton in a Two-Dimensional Periodic Array of Magnetostrictive/Plasmonic Bilayered Nanodots
Here, we investigate the nonreciprocal propagation and amplification of surface plasmons in drift-current biased graphene, using both Galilean and relativistic-type Doppler shift transformations of the graphene's conductivity. Consistent with previous studies, both conductivity models predict strongly nonreciprocal propagation of surface plasmons due to the drag effect caused by the drifting electrons. In particular, the Galilean Doppler shift model leads to stronger spectral asymmetries in the plasmon dispersion with regimes of unidirectional propagation. Remarkably, it is shown that both con…
Domain walls separating regions of AB and BA interlayer stacking in bilayer graphene have attracted attention as novel examples of structural solitons, topological electronic boundaries, and nanoscale plasmonic scatterers. We show that strong coupling of domain walls to surface plasmons observed in infrared nanoimaging experiments is due to topological chiral modes confined to the walls. The optical transitions among these chiral modes and the band continua enhance the local ac conductivity, which leads to plasmon reflection by the domain walls. The imaging reveals two kinds of plasmonic stand…
The charge susceptibility of twisted bilayer graphene is investigated in the Dirac cone, respectively random-phase approximation. For small enough twist angles $θ\lesssim 2^\circ$ we find weakly Landau damped interband plasmons, i.~e., collective excitonic modes which exist in the undoped material, with an almost constant energy dispersion. In this regime, the loss function can be described as a Fano resonance and we argue that these excitations arise from the interaction of quasi-localised states with the incident light field. These predictions can be tested by nano-infrared imaging and possi…
We study plasmon modes in doped AA-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) within the nearest-neighbor tight-binding and the random phase approximation. We obtain closed analytical expressions for the polarizability function which are used to obtain the low-energy dispersion relations of and the numerical results for both acoustic and optical plasmon modes. Our result reveal the potential of AA-stacked BLG to be used as a tunable plasmonic device. In particular we find that the long-wavelength acoustic plasmon disperse as $ω_{+}\approx\sqrt{max(|μ|,t_{1})q}$ with a phase space which shrinks and vanishe…
We have investigated the Coulomb screening properties and plasmon spectrum in a bilayer graphene under a perpendicular electric bias. The bias voltage applied between the two graphene layers opens a gap in the single particle energy spectrum and modifies the many-body correlations and collective excitations. The energy gap can soften the plasmon modes and lead to a crossover of the plasmons from a Landau damped mode to being undamped. Plasmon modes of long lifetime may be observable in experiments and may have potentials for device applications.
We study the mid-infrared plasmonic response in Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene. Unlike its monolayer counterpart, bilayer graphene accommodates optically active phonon modes and a resonant interband transition at infrared frequencies. They strongly modifies the plasmonic properties of bilayer graphene, leading to Fano-type resonances, giant plasmonic enhancement of infrared phonon absorption, narrow window of optical transparency, and a new plasmonic mode at higher energy than the classical plasmon.
We predict the existence of transverse electric (TE) plasmons in bilayer graphene. We find that their plasmonic properties are much more pronounced in bilayer than in monolayer graphene, in a sense that they can get more localized at frequencies just below $\hbarω=0.4$~eV for adequate doping values. This is a consequence of the perfectly nested bands in bilayer graphene which are separated by $\sim 0.4$~eV.
We study the electronic transmission through a graphene bilayer in the presence of an applied bias between layers. We consider different geometries involving interfaces between both a monolayer and a bilayer and between two bilayers. The applied bias opens a sizable gap in the spectrum inside the bilayer barrier region, thus leading to large changes in the transmission probability and electronic conductance that are controlled by the applied bias.
We demonstrate that the low-frequency resistance fluctuations, or noise, in bilayer graphene is strongly connected to its band structure, and displays a minimum when the gap between the conduction and valence band is zero. Using double-gated bilayer graphene devices we have tuned the zero gap and charge neutrality points independently, which offers a versatile mechanism to investigate the low-energy band structure, charge localization and screening properties of bilayer graphene.
Magnetic impurity adsorbed on one of the carbon planes of a bilayer graphene is studied. The formation of the many-body SU(2) and SU(4) resonances close to the bandgap is analyzed within the mean field Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave boson approach. Impact of enhanced hybridization and magnetic instability of bilayer doped near the Van Hove singularity on the screening of magnetic moment is discussed.
We have studied the temperature effect on collective excitations in biased bilayer graphene within random-phase approximation. From the zeros of temperature dynamical dielectric function of the system we have found one weakly damped plasmon mode. For a given electrostatic potential bias, at low (high) temperature T the plasmon frequency changes slightly (increases remarkably) with T. We have also studied the effects of potential bias and carrier density on the plasmon frequency of the system at finite temperatures.
In [Phys. Rev. Lett. vol. 119, p. 133901 (2017)] it was argued that two parallel graphene layers in the presence of electron drift support unstable plasmon modes. Here we show that the predicted plasmon instability is an artifact of errors upon evaluation of graphene polarizability in the presence if electron drift. Crucial role of broken Galilean invariance and spatial dispersion of conductivity for suppression of plasmon instabilities is highlighted.
We study the problem of impurities and mid-gap states in a biased graphene bilayer. We show that the properties of the bound states, such as localization lengths and binding energies, can be controlled externally by an electric field effect. Moreover, the band gap is renormalized and impurity bands are created at finite impurity concentrations. Using the coherent potential approximation we calculate the electronic density of states and its dependence on the applied bias voltage.
We calculate the plasmon frequency and damping rate of plasma oscillations in a spin-polarized BLG system. Using the long wavelength approximation for dynamical dielectric function, we obtain an analytical expression for plasmon frequency showing that the degree of spin polarization P has negligible effect on the long wavelength plasmon frequency. Numerical calculations demonstrate that the degree of spin polarization affects slightly (strongly) plasmon frequency at small (large) wave-vectors and the maximum value of damping rate increases with increasing P. We also study the effects of carrie…
The electronic excitations of bilayer graphene (BLG) under a magnetic field are investigated with the use of the Peierls tight-binding model in conjunction with random-phase approximation (RPA). The interlayer atomic interactions, interlayer Coulomb interactions, and magnetic field effects are simultaneously included in the dielectric-function matrix. That enables us to derive the magneto-Coulomb-excitation spectrum of different stacking structures. The two typical arrangements of BLGs, AB and AA, are considered in this article. AB-BLG exhibits many discrete energy-loss peaks, which correspond…
We investigate the effect that the intrinsic spin-orbit and the inter- and intra-layer Rashba interactions have on the energy spectrum of either an unbiased or a biased graphene bilayer. We find that under certain conditions, a Dirac cone is formed out of a parabolic band and that it is possible to create a "Mexican hat"-like energy dispersion in an unbiased bilayer. In addition, in the presence of only an intralayer Rashba interaction, the K (K') point splits into four distinct ones, contrarily to the case in single-layer graphene, where the splitting also takes place, but the low-energy disp…
Twisted bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides are ideal platforms to study flat-band phenomena. In this paper, we investigate flat-band plasmons in the hole-doped twisted bilayer MoS$_2$ (tb-MoS$_2$) by employing a full tight-binding model and the random phase approximation. When considering lattice relaxations in tb-MoS$_2$, the flat band is not separated from remote valence bands, which makes the contribution of interband transitions in transforming the plasmon dispersion and energy significantly different. In particular, low-damped and quasi-flat plasmons emerge if we only consider intra…
The screening properties and collective excitations (plasmons) in AA-stacked bilayer graphene are studied within the random phase approximation (RPA). Whereas long lived plasmons in single layer graphene and in AB-stacked bilayer graphene can exist only in doped samples, we find that coherent plasmons can disperse in AA-stacked bilayer graphene {\it even in the absence of doping}. Moreover, we show that the characteristic low energy dispersion relation is unaffected by changes in the number of carriers, unless the chemical potential of the doped sample exceeds the inter-layer hopping energy. W…
Surface plasmons, which allow extreme confinement of light, suffer from high intrinsic electronic losses. It has been shown that stimulated emission of electrons can transfer energy to plasmons and compensate for the high intrinsic losses. To-date, these realizations have relied on introducing an external gain media coupled to the surface plasmon. Here, we propose that plasmons in two-dimensional materials with closely located electron and hole Fermi pockets can experience gain, when an electrical current bias is applied along the displaced electron-hole pockets, without the need for an extern…
Understanding the dynamics of excitons in two dimensional semiconductors requires a theory that incorporates the essential physics distinct from their three-dimensional counterparts. In addition to the modified dielectric environment, single-particle states with strongly non-parabolic dispersion appear in many two-dimensional band structures, so that "effective mass" is ill-defined. Focusing on electrostatically-biased bilayer graphene as an example where quartic (and higher) dispersion terms are necessary, we present a semi-analytic theory used to investigate the properties of ground and exci…
We obtain analytical expressions for the eigenstates and the Landau level spectrum of biased graphene bilayers in a magnetic field. The calculations are performed in the context of a four-band continuum model and generalize previous approximate results. Solutions are presented for the spectrum as a function of interlayer coupling, the potential difference between the layers and the magnetic field. The explicit expressions allow us to calculate the oscillator strength and the selection rules for electric dipole transitions between the Landau states. Some transitions are significantly shifted in…
In this work, we investigate the intrinsic limits of subthreshold slope in a dual gated bilayer graphene transistor using a coupled self-consistent Poisson-bandstructure solver. We benchmark the solver by matching the bias dependent bandgap results obtained from the solver against published experimental data. We show that the intrinsic bias dependence of the electronic structure and the self-consistent electrostatics limit the subthreshold slope obtained in such a transistor well above the Boltzmann limit of 60mV/decade at room temperature, but much below the results experimentally shown till …
We investigate here how the current flows over a bilayer graphene in the presence of an external electric field perpendicularly applied (biased bilayer). Charge density polarization between layers in these systems is known to create a layer pseudospin, which can be manipulated by the electric field. Our results show that current does not necessarily flow over regions of the system with higher charge density. Charge can be predominantly concentrated over one layer, while current flows over the other layer. We find that this phenomenon occurs when the charge density becomes highly concentrated o…
We investigate the effect of exchange and correlation (xc) on the plasmon spectrum and the Coulomb drag between spatially separated low-density two-dimensional electron layers. We adopt a new approach, which employs dynamic xc kernels in the calculation of the bi-layer plasmon spectra and of the plasmon-mediated drag, and static many-body local field factors in the calculation of the particle-hole contribution to the drag. The spectrum of bi-layer plasmons and the drag resistivity are calculated in a broad range of temperatures taking into account both intra- and inter-layer correlation effect…
Achieving a population imbalance between the two inequivalent valleys is a critical first step for any valleytronic device. A valley-polarization can be induced in biased bilayer graphene using circularly polarized light. In this paper, we present a detailed theoretical study of valley-polarization in biased bilayer graphene. We show that a nearly perfect valley-polarization can be achieved with the proper choices of external bias and pulse frequency. We find that the optimal pulse frequency $ω$ is given by $\hbarω=2a,$ where $2a$ is the potential energy difference between the graphene layers.…
The large lattice constant of Moire superlattice formed in twisted bilayer graphene for small twist enables observing the Landau levels splitting into Hofstadter butterflies in energy spectra for moderate magnetic field. This is expected for generic system under homogeneous bias conditions but its robustness against spatial potential fluctuations is left open question. We study the energy structure of twisted bilayer system in dependence of both, the homogeneous magnetic field and the bias voltage applied exclusively in its central part. Although the translational symmetry is broken, the energ…
Van der Waals heterostructures of atomically thin layers with rotational misalignments, such as twisted bilayer graphene, feature interesting structural moiré superlattices. Due to the quantum coupling between the twisted atomic layers, light-matter interaction is inherently chiral; as such, they provide a promising platform for chiral plasmons in the extreme nanoscale. However, while the interlayer quantum coupling can be significant, its influence on chiral plasmons still remains elusive. Here we present the general solutions from full Maxwell equations of chiral plasmons in twisted atomic b…
We investigate the charge carrier dynamics in bilayer graphene subject to monochromatic laser irradiation within the Landau level quantization regime. Even though the radiation field does not lift the energy degeneracy of the lowest Landau levels (LLs), it nevertheless has a strong effect on the photoinduced pseudospin polarization response for higher LLs ($n\ge2$). Our results show that the photoinduced bandgaps lead to a finite response of the averaged pseudospin polarization with nontrivial oscillating behavior. It is shown that the contribution from these higher LL transitions turns out to…
We study collective plasmon excitations and screening of disordered single- and bilayer black phosphorus beyond the low energy continuum approximation. The dynamical polarizability of phosphorene is computed using a tight-binding model that properly accounts for the band structure in a wide energy range. Electron-electron interaction is considered within the Random Phase Approximation. Damping of the plasmon modes due to different kinds of disorder, such as resonant scatterers and long-range disorder potentials, is analyzed. We further show that an electric field applied perpendicular to bilay…
The tight-binding model is closely associated with the modified layer-based random-phase approximation to thoroughly investigate the electron-electron interactions in sliding bilayer graphene. The Coulomb interactions and intralayer and interlayer atomic interactions dominate the collective and electron-hole excitations. The unusual energy bands are directly reflected in the diverse transferred momentum-frequency phase diagrams. In general, there exist two kinds of plasmon modes during the variation of the doping level in sliding bilayer graphene, being accompanied with the complicated intraba…
Intrinsic and extrinsic valley Hall effects are predicted to emerge in graphene systems with uniform or spatially-varying mass terms. Extrinsic mechanisms, mediated by the valley-dependent scattering of electrons at the Fermi surface, can be directly linked to quantum transport simulations. This is a promising route towards more complete experimental investigation of valleytronic phenomena in graphene, but a major obstacle is the difficulty in applying the sublattice-dependent potentials required. Here we show that strongly valley-dependent scattering also emerges from bilayer graphene quantum…
We explore the collective electronic excitations of bilayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) using the density functional theory together with the random phase approximation. The many-body dielectric function and electron energy-loss spectra are calculated using an {\it ab initio} based model involving material-realistic physical properties. The electron energy-loss function of bilayer MoS$_2$ system is found to be sensitive to either electron or hole doping and it is owing to the fact that the Kohn-Sham band dispersions are not symmetric for energies above and below the zero Fermi level. Three …
We study localized plasmonic excitations in bilayer graphene (BLG) nanodisks, comparing AA-stacked and AB-stacked BLG and contrasting the results to the case of two monolayers without electronic hybridization. The electrodynamic response of the BLG electron gas is described in terms of a spatially homogeneous surface conductivity, and an efficient alternative two-dimensional electrostatic approach is employed to carry out all the numerical calculations of plasmon resonances. Due to a unique electronic band structures, the resonance frequency of the traditional dipolar plasmonic mode in the AA-…
We theoretically study the electronic structure of small-angle twisted bilayer graphene with a large potential asymmetry between the top and bottom layers. We show that the emergent helical states known to appear on the triangular AB-BA domain boundary do not actually form a percolating network, but instead they provide independent, perfect one-dimensional channels propagating in three different directions. Using the continuum-model Hamiltonian, we demonstrate that an applied bias causes two well-defined energy windows which contain sparsely distributed one-dimensional channels. The origin of …
In this Rapid Communication, we theoretically demonstrate that near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) can be modulated and enhanced by a new energy transmission mode of evanescent wave, i.e. the nonreciprocal surface plasmons polaritons (NSPPs). In addition to the well-known coupled surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), applying a drift current on a graphene sheet leads to an extremely asymmetric photonic transmission model, which has never been noted in the noncontact heat exchanges at nanoscale before. The coupling of plasmons in the infrared bands dominates the NFRHT, associated with low l…
We discuss plasmons of biased twisted bilayer graphene when the Fermi level lies inside the gap. The collective excitations are a network of chiral edge plasmons (CEP) entirely composed of excitations in the topological electronic edge states (EES) that appear at the AB-BA interfaces. The CEP form an hexagonal network with an unique energy scale $ε_p=\frac{e^2}{ε_0εt_0}$ with $t_0$ the moiré lattice constant and $ε$ the dielectric constant. From the dielectric matrix we obtain the plasmon spectra that has two main characteristics: (i) a diverging density of states at zero energy, and (ii) the …
We report a systematic plasmonic study of twisted bilayer graphene (TBLG) - two graphene layers stacked with a twist angle. Through real-space nanoimaging of TBLG single crystals with a wide distribution of twist angles, we find that TBLG supports confined infrared plasmons that are sensitively dependent on the twist angle. At small twist angles, TBLG has a plasmon wavelength comparable to that of single-layer graphene. At larger twist angles, the plasmon wavelength of TBLG increases significantly with apparently lower damping. Further analysis and modeling indicate that the observed twist-ang…
Intrinsic bilayer graphene is a gapless semimetal. Under the application of a bias field it becomes a semiconductor with a direct band gap that is proportional to the applied field. Under a layer-asymmetric strain (where the upper layer undergoes compression and lower layer tension or visa-versa) we find that the band gap of a biased bilayer graphene ribbon becomes indirect and, for higher strains, becomes negative returning the material its original semimetal state. As a result, the conductivity of the ribbon increases and can be almost an order of magnitude larger that of the intrinsic unbia…
The important experimental advances in graphene fabrication and its peculiar transport properties motivated researchers to utilize graphene as a potential basis for the next generation of fast and smart electronic devices. In this article, we investigate the influence of a potential substrate on the transport properties of a biased AA-stacked n-p-n bilayer graphene junction (AA-BLG). Using the Dirac Hamiltonian with the transfer matrix approach we obtain the transmission probabilities and thus the respective conductance. In the presence of the induced mass-term, the energy spectrum and the int…
We derive a material-realistic real-space many-body Hamiltonian for twisted bilayer graphene from first principles, including both single-particle hopping terms for $p_z$ electrons and long-range Coulomb interactions. By disentangling low- and high-energy subspaces of the electronic dispersion, we are able to utilize state-of-the-art constrained Random Phase Approximation calculations to reliably describe the non-local background screening from the high-energy $s$, $p_x$, and $p_y$ electron states for arbitrary twist angles. The twist-dependent low-energy screening from $p_z$ states is subsequ…
