In this work, we develop a systematic framework for computing the resolvent of the sum of two or more monotone operators which only activates each operator in the sum individually. The key tool in the development of this framework is the notion of the "strengthening" of a set-valued operator, which can be viewed as a type of regularisation that preserves computational tractability. After deriving a number of iterative schemes through this framework, we demonstrate their application to best approximation problems, image denoising and elliptic PDEs.
In this paper we propose a resolvent splitting with minimal lifting for finding a zero of the sum of $n\ge 2$ maximally monotone operators involving the composition with a linear bounded operator. The resolvent of each monotone operator, the linear operator, and its adjoint are computed exactly once in the proposed algorithm. In the case when the linear operator is the identity, we recover the resolvent splitting with minimal lifting developed in Malitsky-Tam (2021). We also derive a new resolvent splitting for solving the composite monotone inclusion in the case $n=2$ with minimal $1-$fold li…

This paper provides a new way of developing the splitting method which is used to solve the problem of finding the resolvent of the sum of maximal monotone operators in Hilbert spaces. By employing accelerated techniques developed by Davis and Yin (in Set-Valued Var. Anal. 25(4):829-858, 2017), this paper presents an implementable, strongly convergent splitting method which is designed to solve the problem. In particular, we show that the distance between the sequence of iterates and the solution converges to zero at a rate O(1/k) to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed method, where k is…
In this work, we study fixed point algorithms for finding a zero in the sum of $n\geq 2$ maximally monotone operators by using their resolvents. More precisely, we consider the class of such algorithms where each resolvent is evaluated only once per iteration. For any algorithm from this class, we show that the underlying fixed point operator is necessarily defined on a $d$-fold Cartesian product space with $d\geq n-1$. Further, we show that this bound is unimprovable by providing a family of examples for which $d=n-1$ is attained. This family includes the Douglas-Rachford algorithm as the spe…
In this work, we study resolvent splitting algorithms for solving composite monotone inclusion problems. The objective of these general problems is finding a zero in the sum of maximally monotone operators composed with linear operators. Our main contribution is establishing the first primal-dual splitting algorithm for composite monotone inclusions with minimal lifting. Specifically, the proposed scheme reduces the dimension of the product space where the underlying fixed point operator is defined, in comparison to other algorithms, without requiring additional evaluations of the resolvent op…
We propose and analyze a versatile and general algorithm called nonlinear forward-backward splitting (NOFOB). The algorithm consists of two steps; first an evaluation of a nonlinear forward-backward map followed by a relaxed projection onto the separating hyperplane it constructs. The key of the method is the nonlinearity in the forward-backward step, where the backward part is based on a nonlinear resolvent construction that allows for the kernel in the resolvent to be a nonlinear single-valued maximal monotone operator. This generalizes the standard resolvent as well as the Bregman resolvent…
A new framework for analyzing Fejer convergent algorithms is presented. Using this framework we define a very general class of Fejer convergent algorithms and establish its convergence properties. We also introduce a new definition of approximations of resolvents which preserve some useful features of the exact resolvent, and use this concept to present an unifying view of the Forward-Backward splitting method, Tseng's Modified Forward-Backward splitting method and Korpelevich's method. We show that methods based on families of approximate resolvents fall within the aforementioned class of Fej…
Splitting algorithms for finding a zero of sum of operators often involve multiple steps which are referred to as forward or backward steps. Forward steps are the explicit use of the operators and backward steps involve the operators implicitly via their resolvents. In this paper, we study an adaptive splitting algorithm for finding a zero of the sum of three operators. We assume that two of the operators are generalized monotone and their resolvents are computable, while the other operator is cocoercive but its resolvent is missing or costly to compute. Our splitting algorithm adapts new para…
Resolvents of set-valued operators play a central role in various branches of mathematics and in particular in the design and the analysis of splitting algorithms for solving monotone inclusions. We propose a generalization of this notion, called warped resolvent, which is constructed with the help of an auxiliary operator. The properties of warped resolvents are investigated and connections are made with existing notions. Abstract weak and strong convergence principles based on warped resolvents are proposed and shown to not only provide a synthetic view of splitting algorithms but to also co…
We propose a flexible approach for computing the resolvent of the sum of weakly monotone operators in real Hilbert spaces. This relies on splitting methods where strong convergence is guaranteed. We also prove linear convergence under Lipschitz continuity assumption. The approach is then applied to computing the proximity operator of the sum of weakly convex functions, and particularly to finding the best approximation to the intersection of convex sets.
The correspondence between the class of nonexpansive mappings and the class of maximally monotone operators via the reflected resolvents of the latter has played an instrumental role in the convergence analysis of the splitting methods. Indeed, the performance of some of these methods, e.g., Douglas-Rachford and Peaceman-Rachford methods hinges on iterating the so-called splitting operator associated with the individual operators. This splitting operator is a function of the composition of the reflected resolvents of the underlying operators. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive study of …
We shed light on the structure of the "three-operator" version of the forward-Douglas--Rachford splitting algorithm for finding a zero of a sum of maximally monotone operators $A + B + C$, where $B$ is cocoercive, involving only the computation of $B$ and of the resolvent of $A$ and of $C$, separately. We show that it is a straightforward extension of a fixed-point algorithm proposed by us as a generalization of the forward-backward splitting algorithm, initially designed for finding a zero of a sum of an arbitrary number of maximally monotone operators $\sum_{i=1}^n A_i + B$, where $B$ is coc…
We propose a new primal-dual splitting method for solving composite inclusions involving Lipschitzian, and parallel-sum-type monotone operators. Our approach extends the framework in \cite{Siopt4} to a more general class of monotone inclusions in a nontrivial fashion. The main idea is to represent the solution set of both the primal and dual problems using their associated Kuhn-Tucker set, and then develop a projected method to successively approximate a feasible point of the Kuhn-Tucker set. We propose a splitting algorithm based on the resolvent of each maximally monotone operator to constru…
We present a preconditioning of a generalized forward-backward splitting algorithm for finding a zero of a sum of maximally monotone operators $\sum_{i=1}^{n} A_i + B$ with $B$ cocoercive, involving only the computation of $B$ and of the resolvent of each $A_i$ separately. This allows in particular to minimize functionals of the form $\sum_{i=1}^n g_i + f$ with $f$ smooth, using only the computation of the gradient of $f$ and of the proximity operator of each $g_i$ separately. By adapting the underlying metric, such preconditioning can serve two practical purposes: first, it might accelerate t…
We revisit the operator splitting schemes proposed in a recent work of [Some extensions of the operator splitting schemes based on Lagrangian and primal-dual: A unified proximal point analysis, Feng Xue, Optimization, 2022, doi: 10.1080/02331934.2022.2057309], and further analyze the convergence of the generalized Bregman distance and the primal-dual gap of these algorithms within a unified proximal point framework. The possibility of reduction to a simple resolvent is also discussed by exploiting the structure and possible degeneracy of the underlying metric.
In this work, we propose and analyse two splitting algorithms for finding a zero of the sum of three monotone operators, one of which is assumed to be Lipschitz continuous. Each iteration of these algorithms require one forward evaluation of the Lipschitz continuous operator and one resolvent evaluation of each of the other two operators. By specialising to two operator inclusions, we recover the forward-reflected-backward and the reflected-forward-backward splitting methods as particular cases. The inspiration for the proposed algorithms arises from interpretations of the aforementioned refle…
We investigate the asymptotic behavior of a stochastic version of the forward-backward splitting algorithm for finding a zero of the sum of a maximally monotone set-valued operator and a cocoercive operator in Hilbert spaces. Our general setting features stochastic approximations of the cocoercive operator and stochastic perturbations in the evaluation of the resolvents of the set-valued operator. In addition, relaxations and not necessarily vanishing proximal parameters are allowed. Weak and strong almost sure convergence properties of the iterates is established under mild conditions on the …
We propose a primal-dual splitting algorithm for solving monotone inclusions involving a mixture of sums, linear compositions, and parallel sums of set-valued and Lipschitzian operators. An important feature of the algorithm is that the Lipschitzian operators present in the formulation can be processed individually via explicit steps, while the set-valued operators are processed individually via their resolvents. In addition, the algorithm is highly parallel in that most of its steps can be executed simultaneously. This work brings together and notably extends various types of structured monot…
This note is devoted to the splitting algorithm proposed by Davis and Yin in 2017 for computing a zero of the sum of three maximally monotone operators, with one of them being cocoercive. We provide a direct proof that guarantees its convergence when the stepsizes are smaller than four times the cocoercivity constant, thus doubling the size of the interval established by Davis and Yin. As a by-product, the same conclusion applies to the forward-backward splitting algorithm. Further, we use the notion of "strengthening" of a set-valued operator to derive a new splitting algorithm for computing …

Monotone inclusions have wide applications in solving various convex optimization problems arising in signal and image processing, machine learning, and medical image reconstruction. In this paper, we propose a new splitting algorithm for finding a zero of the sum of a maximally monotone operator, a monotone Lipschitzian operator, and a cocoercive operator, which is called outer reflected forward-backward splitting algorithm. Under mild conditions on the iterative parameters, we prove the convergence of the proposed algorithm. As applications, we employ the proposed algorithm to solve composit…

We propose and analyze the convergence of a novel stochastic forward-backward splitting algorithm for solving monotone inclusions given by the sum of a maximal monotone operator and a single-valued maximal monotone cocoercive operator. This latter framework has a number of interesting special cases, including variational inequalities and convex minimization problems, while stochastic approaches are practically relevant to account for perturbations in the data. The algorithm we propose is a stochastic extension of the classical deterministic forward-backward method, and is obtained considering …
Finding a zero of a sum of maximally monotone operators is a fundamental problem in modern optimization and nonsmooth analysis. Assuming that resolvents of the operators are available, this problem can be tackled with the Douglas-Rachford algorithm. However, when dealing with three or more operators, one must work in a product space with as many factors as there are operators. In groundbreaking recent work by Ryu and by Malitsky and Tam, it was shown that the number of factors can be reduced by one. These splitting methods guarantee weak convergence to some solution of the underlying sum probl…
The splitting algorithms by Ryu, by Malitsky-Tam, and by Campoy applied to normal cones of linear subspaces converge strongly to the projection onto the intersection
We consider monotone inclusions defined on a Hilbert space where the operator is given by the sum of a maximal monotone operator $T$ and a single-valued monotone, Lipschitz continuous, and expectation-valued operator $V$. We draw motivation from the seminal work by Attouch and Cabot on relaxed inertial methods for monotone inclusions and present a stochastic extension of the relaxed inertial forward-backward-forward (RISFBF) method. Facilitated by an online variance reduction strategy via a mini-batch approach, we show that (RISFBF) produces a sequence that weakly converges to the solution set…
In this paper, we propose several graph-based extensions of the Douglas-Rachford splitting (DRS) method to solve monotone inclusion problems involving the sum of $N$ maximal monotone operators. Our construction is based on a two-layer architecture that we refer to as bilevel graphs, to which we associate a generalization of the DRS algorithm that presents the prescribed structure. The resulting schemes can be understood as unconditionally stable frugal resolvent splitting methods with a minimal lifting in the sense of Ryu [Math Program 182(1):233-273, 2020], as well as instances of the (degene…
Tseng's algorithm finds a zero of the sum of a maximally monotone operator and a monotone continuous operator by evaluating the latter twice per iteration. In this paper, we modify Tseng's algorithm for finding a zero of the sum of three operators, where we add a cocoercive operator to the inclusion. Since the sum of a cocoercive and a monotone-Lipschitz operator is monotone and Lipschitz, we could use Tseng's method for solving this problem, but implementing both operators twice per iteration and without taking into advantage the cocoercivity property of one operator. Instead, in our approach…
