Resolvents of set-valued operators play a central role in various branches of mathematics and in particular in the design and the analysis of splitting algorithms for solving monotone inclusions. We propose a generalization of this notion, called warped resolvent, which is constructed with the help of an auxiliary operator. The properties of warped resolvents are investigated and connections are made with existing notions. Abstract weak and strong convergence principles based on warped resolvents are proposed and shown to not only provide a synthetic view of splitting algorithms but to also constitute an effective device to produce new solution methods for challenging inclusion problems.
We show that the asynchronous block-iterative primal-dual projective splitting framework introduced by P. L. Combettes and J. Eckstein in their 2018 Math. Program. paper can be viewed as an instantiation of the recently proposed warped proximal algorithm.
This paper proposes an accelerated proximal point method for maximally monotone operators. The proof is computer-assisted via the performance estimation problem approach. The proximal point method includes various well-known convex optimization methods, such as the proximal method of multipliers and the alternating direction method of multipliers, and thus the proposed acceleration has wide applications. Numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the accelerating behaviors.
We focus on the linear convergence of generalized proximal point algorithms for solving monotone inclusion problems. Under the assumption that the associated monotone operator is metrically subregular or that the inverse of the monotone operator is Lipschitz continuous, we provide Q-linear and R-linear convergence results on generalized proximal point algorithms. Comparisons between our results and related ones in the literature are presented in remarks of this work.
In this paper an inexact proximal point method for variational inequalities in Hadamard manifolds is introduced and studied its convergence properties. The main tool used for presenting the method is the concept of enlargement of monotone vector fields, which generalizes the concept of enlargement of monotone operators from the linear setting to the Riemannian context. As an application, an inexact proximal point method for constrained optimization problems is obtained.
We consider a stochastic variational inequality (SVI) problem with a continuous and monotone mapping over a closed and convex set. In strongly monotone regimes, we present a variable sample-size averaging scheme (VS-Ave) that achieves a linear rate with an optimal oracle complexity. In addition, the iteration complexity is shown to display a muted dependence on the condition number compared with standard variance-reduced projection schemes. To contend with merely monotone maps, we develop amongst the first proximal-point algorithms with variable sample-sizes (PPAWSS), where increasingly accura…
Relying on fixed point techniques, Mahey, Oualibouch and Tao introduced the scaled proximal decomposition on the graph of a maximal monotone operator (SPDG) algorithm and analyzed its performance on inclusions for strongly monotone and Lipschitz continuous operators. The SPDG algorithm generalizes the Spingarn's partial inverse method by allowing scaling factors, a key strategy to speed up the convergence of numerical algorithms. In this note, we show that the SPDG algorithm can alternatively be analyzed by means of the original Spingarn's partial inverse framework, tracing back to the 1983 Sp…
In this paper, we introduce an inertial proximal method for solving a bilevel problem involving two monotone equilibrium bifunctions in Hilbert spaces. Under suitable conditions and without any restrictive assumption on the trajectories, the weak and strong convergence of the sequence generated by the iterative method are established. Two particular cases illustrating the proposed method are thereafter discussed with respect to hierarchical minimization problems and equilibrium problems under saddle point constraint. Furthermore, a numerical example is given to demonstrate the implementability…
Composite optimization problems, where the sum of a smooth and a merely lower semicontinuous function has to be minimized, are often tackled numerically by means of proximal gradient methods as soon as the lower semicontinuous part of the objective function is of simple enough structure. The available convergence theory associated with these methods (mostly) requires the derivative of the smooth part of the objective function to be (globally) Lipschitz continuous, and this might be a restrictive assumption in some practically relevant scenarios. In this paper, we readdress this classical topic…
An efficient proximal-gradient-based method, called proximal extrapolated gradient method, is designed for solving monotone variational inequality in Hilbert space. The proposed method extends the acceptable range of parameters to obtain larger step sizes. The step size is predicted based a local information of the operator and corrected by linesearch procedures to satisfy a very weak condition, which is even weaker than the boundedness of sequence generated and always holds when the operator is the gradient of a convex function. We establish its convergence and ergodic convergence rate in the…
We establish the optimal nonergodic sublinear convergence rate of the proximal point algorithm for maximal monotone inclusion problems. First, the optimal bound is formulated by the performance estimation framework, resulting in an infinite dimensional nonconvex optimization problem, which is then equivalently reformulated as a finite dimensional semidefinite programming (SDP) problem. By constructing a feasible solution to the dual SDP, we obtain an upper bound on the optimal nonergodic sublinear rate. Finally, an example in two dimensional space is constructed to provide a lower bound on the…
In this paper, we investigate distributed generalized Nash equilibrium (GNE) computation of monotone games with affine coupling constraints. Each player can only utilize its local objective function, local feasible set and a local block of the coupling constraint, and can only communicate with its neighbours. We assume the game has monotone pseudo-subdifferential without Lipschitz continuity restrictions. We design novel center-free distributed GNE seeking algorithms for equality and inequality affine coupling constraints, respectively. A proximal alternating direction method of multipliers(AD…
We study the behavior of the trajectories of a second-order differential equation with vanishing damping, governed by the Yosida regularization of a maximally monotone operator with time-varying index, along with a new {\em Regularized Inertial Proximal Algorithm} obtained by means of a convenient finite-difference discretization. These systems are the counterpart to accelerated forward-backward algorithms in the context of maximally monotone operators. A proper tuning of the parameters allows us to prove the weak convergence of the trajectories to zeroes of the operator. Moreover, it is possi…
Finding a zero of a maximal monotone operator is fundamental in convex optimization and monotone operator theory, and \emph{proximal point algorithm} (PPA) is a primary method for solving this problem. PPA converges not only globally under fairly mild conditions but also asymptotically at a fast linear rate provided that the underlying inverse operator is Lipschitz continuous at the origin. These nice convergence properties are preserved by a relaxed variant of PPA. Recently, a linear convergence bound was established in [M. Tao, and X. M. Yuan, J. Sci. Comput., 74 (2018), pp. 826-850] for the…
We propose an asynchronous block-iterative decomposition algorithm to solve Nash equilibrium problems involving a mix of nonsmooth and smooth functions acting on linear mixtures of strategies. The methodology relies heavily on monotone operator theory and in particular on warped resolvents.
In this work, we propose and study a framework of generalized proximal point algorithms associated with a maximally monotone operator. We indicate sufficient conditions on the regularization and relaxation parameters of generalized proximal point algorithms for the equivalence of the boundedness of the sequence of iterations generated by this algorithm and the non-emptiness of the zero set of the maximally monotone operator, and for the weak and strong convergence of the algorithm. Our results cover or improve many results on generalized proximal point algorithms in our references. Improvement…
In a Hilbert setting, we introduce a new dynamical system and associated algorithms for solving monotone inclusions by rapid methods. Given a maximal monotone operator $A$, the evolution is governed by the time dependent operator $I -(I + λ(t) {A})^{-1}$, where the positive control parameter $λ(t)$ tends to infinity as $t \to + \infty$. The tuning of $ λ(\cdot) $ is done in a closed-loop way, by resolution of the algebraic equation $λ\norm{(I + λ{A})^{-1}x -x}=θ$, where $θ$ is a positive given constant. The existence and uniqueness of a strong global solution for the Cauchy problem follows fro…
In this paper, we propose and study the asymptotic convergence and nonasymptotic global convergence rates (iteration-complexity) of an inertial under-relaxed version of the relative-error hybrid proximal extragradient (HPE) method for solving monotone inclusion problems. We analyze the proposed method under more flexible assumptions than existing ones on the extrapolation and relative-error parameters. As applications, we propose and/or study inertial under-relaxed forward-backward and Tseng's modified forward-backward type methods for solving structured monotone inclusions.
This article studies the solutions of time-dependent differential inclusions which is motivated by their utility in the modeling of certain physical systems. The differential inclusion is described by a time-dependent set-valued mapping having the property that, for a given time instant, the set-valued mapping describes a maximal monotone operator. Under certain mild assumptions on the regularity with respect to the time argument, we construct a sequence of functions parameterized by the sampling time that corresponds to the discretization of the continuous-time system. Using appropriate tools…
The standard algorithms for solving large-scale convex-concave saddle point problems, or, more generally, variational inequalities with monotone operators, are proximal type algorithms which at every iteration need to compute a prox-mapping, that is, to minimize over problem's domain $X$ the sum of a linear form and the specific convex distance-generating function underlying the algorithms in question. Relative computational simplicity of prox-mappings, which is the standard requirement when implementing proximal algorithms, clearly implies the possibility to equip $X$ with a relatively comput…
We introduce a notion of variable quasi-Bregman monotone sequence which unifies the notion of variable metric quasi-Fejér monotone sequences and that of Bregman monotone sequences. The results are applied to analyze the asymptotic behavior of proximal iterations based on variable Bregman distance and of algorithms for solving convex feasibility problems in reflexive real Banach spaces.
Within convex analysis, a rich theory with various applications has been evolving since the proximal average of convex functions was first introduced over a decade ago. When one considers the subdifferential of the proximal average, a natural averaging operation of the subdifferentials of the averaged functions emerges. In the present paper we extend the reach of this averaging operation to the framework of monotone operator theory in Hilbert spaces, transforming it into the resolvent average. The theory of resolvent averages contains many desirable properties. In particular, we study a detail…
We investigate the asymptotic behavior of a stochastic version of the forward-backward splitting algorithm for finding a zero of the sum of a maximally monotone set-valued operator and a cocoercive operator in Hilbert spaces. Our general setting features stochastic approximations of the cocoercive operator and stochastic perturbations in the evaluation of the resolvents of the set-valued operator. In addition, relaxations and not necessarily vanishing proximal parameters are allowed. Weak and strong almost sure convergence properties of the iterates is established under mild conditions on the …
We consider a class of hierarchical noncooperative $N$-player games where the $i$th player solves a parametrized stochastic mathematical program with equilibrium constraints (MPEC) with the caveat that the implicit form of the $i$th player's in MPEC is convex in player strategy, given rival decisions. We develop computational schemes in two distinct regimes: (a) {\em Monotone regimes.} When player-specific implicit problems are convex, then the necessary and sufficient equilibrium conditions are given by a stochastic inclusion. Under a monotonicity assumption on the operator, we develop a vari…
The majority of First Order methods for large-scale convex-concave saddle point problems and variational inequalities with monotone operators are proximal algorithms which at every iteration need to minimize over problem's domain X the sum of a linear form and a strongly convex function. To make such an algorithm practical, X should be proximal-friendly -- admit a strongly convex function with easy to minimize linear perturbations. As a byproduct, X admits a computationally cheap Linear Minimization Oracle (LMO) capable to minimize over X linear forms. There are, however, important situations …
We consider a bilevel problem involving two monotone equilibrium bifunctions and we show that this problem can be solved by a proximal point method with generalized proximal distances. We propose a framework for the convergence analysis of the sequences generated by the algorithm. This class of problems is very interesting because it covers mathematical programs and optimization problems under equilibrium constraints. As an application, we consider the problem of the stability and change dynamics of task's allocation in a hierarchical organization.
This paper proposes a two-point inertial proximal point algorithm to find zero of maximal monotone operators in Hilbert spaces. We obtain weak convergence results and non-asymptotic $O(1/n)$ convergence rate of our proposed algorithm in non-ergodic sense. Applications of our results to various well-known convex optimization methods, such as the proximal method of multipliers and the alternating direction method of multipliers are given. Numerical results are given to demonstrate the accelerating behaviors of our method over other related methods in the literature.
The notion of Fejér monotonicity is instrumental in unifying the convergence proofs of many iterative methods, such as the Krasnoselskii-Mann iteration, the proximal point method, the Douglas-Rachford splitting algorithm, and many others. In this paper, we present directionally asymptotical results of strongly convergent subsequences of Fejér monotone sequences. We also provide examples to show that the sets of directionally asymptotic cluster points can be large and that weak convergence is needed in infinite-dimensional spaces.
This paper studies the iteration-complexity of new regularized hybrid proximal extragradient (HPE)-type methods for solving monotone inclusion problems (MIPs). The new (regularized HPE-type) methods essentially consist of instances of the standard HPE method applied to regularizations of the original MIP. It is shown that its pointwise iteration-complexity considerably improves the one of the HPE method while approaches (up to a logarithmic factor) the ergodic iteration-complexity of the latter method.
We study inertial versions of primal-dual proximal splitting, also known as the Chambolle--Pock method. Our starting point is the preconditioned proximal point formulation of this method. By adding correctors corresponding to the anti-symmetric part of the relevant monotone operator, using a FISTA-style gap unrolling argument, we are able to derive gap estimates instead of merely ergodic gap estimates. Moreover, based on adding a diagonal component to this corrector, we are able to combine strong convexity based acceleration with inertial acceleration. We test our proposed method on image proc…
We introduce the first operator splitting method for composite monotone inclusions outside of Hilbert spaces. The proposed primal-dual method constructs iteratively the best Bregman approximation to an arbitrary point from the Kuhn-Tucker set of a composite monotone inclusion. Strong convergence is established in reflexive Banach spaces without requiring additional restrictions on the monotone operators or knowledge of the norms of the linear operators involved in the model. The monotone operators are activated via Bregman distance-based resolvent operators. The method is novel even in Euclide…

Utilizing our recent proximal-average based results on the constructive extension of monotone operators, we provide a novel approach to the celebrated Kirszbraun-Valentine Theorem and to the extension of firmly nonexpansive mappings.
In this work, we propose and analyse two splitting algorithms for finding a zero of the sum of three monotone operators, one of which is assumed to be Lipschitz continuous. Each iteration of these algorithms require one forward evaluation of the Lipschitz continuous operator and one resolvent evaluation of each of the other two operators. By specialising to two operator inclusions, we recover the forward-reflected-backward and the reflected-forward-backward splitting methods as particular cases. The inspiration for the proposed algorithms arises from interpretations of the aforementioned refle…
We provide two weakly convergent algorithms for finding a zero of the sum of a maximally monotone operator, a cocoercive operator, and the normal cone to a closed vector subspace of a real Hilbert space. The methods exploit the intrinsic structure of the problem by activating explicitly the cocoercive operator in the first step, and taking advantage of a vector space decomposition in the second step. The second step of the first method is a Douglas-Rachford iteration involving the maximally monotone operator and the normal cone. In the second method it is a proximal step involving the partial …
The article is devoted to the development of numerical methods for solving variational inequalities with relatively strongly monotone operators. We consider two classes of variational inequalities related to some analogs of the Lipschitz condition of the operator that appeared several years ago. One of these classes is associated with the relative boundedness of the operator, and the other one with the analog of the Lipschitz condition (namely, relative smoothness). For variational inequalities with relatively bounded and relatively strongly monotone operators, we introduce a modification of t…
