Since the discovery of graphene, two-dimensional materials with atomic level thickness have rapidly grown to be a prosperous field of physical science with interdisciplinary interests, for their fascinating properties and broad applications. Very recently, the experimental observation of ferromagnetism in Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ bilayer and CrI$_3$ monolayer opened a door to pursuit long-absent intrinsic magnetic orders in two-dimensional materials. Meanwhile, the ferroelectricity was also experimentally found in SnTe monolayer and CuInP$_2$S$_6$ few layers. The emergence of these ferroic orders in the two-dimensional limit not only brings new challenges to our physical knowledge, but also provides more functionalities for potential applications. Among various two-dimensional ferroic ordered materials, transition/rare-earth metal halides and their derivants are very common. In this Research Update, based on transition/rare-earth metal halides, the physics of various ferroic orders in two-dimensional will be illustrated. The potential applications based on their magnetic and polar properties will also be discussed.
Halide perovskite semiconductors respond to electric fields in a way that varies across time and length scales. We discuss the microscopic processes that give rise to the macroscopic polarization of these materials, ranging from the optical and vibrational response to the transport of ions and electrons. The strong frequency dependence of the dielectric permittivity can be understood by separating the static dielectric constant into its constituents, including the orientional polarization due to rotating dipoles, which connects theory with experimental observations. The controversial issue of …
Two-dimensional multiferroic materials are highly sought after due to their huge potential for applications in nanoelectronic and spintronic devices. Here, we predict, based on first-principle calculations, a single phase {\it triferroic} where three ferroic orders; ferromagnetism, ferroelectricity and ferroelasticity, coexist simultaneously in hole doped GdCl$_2$ monolayer (a ferromagnetic semiconductor). This is achieved by substituting 1/3rd of the Gd$^{2+}$ ions with Eu$^{2+}$ in the hexagonal structure of GdCl$_2$ monolayer. The resulting metallic state undergoes a bond-centered charge or…
Photovoltaic conversion efficiency (PCE) of halide perovskite solar cells has risen spectacularly, yet the very crystalline structure of CH3NH3PbI3 remains ambiguous after extensive researches, and its polar nature remains hotly debated. Here we present compelling evidences that CH3NH3PbI3 crystals self-grown on FTO/TiO2 substrate consist of ferroic domains with alternating polar and nonpolar orders, in contrast to previous experimental and theoretical expectations, and polar domains possess reduced photocurrent. It is found that polar and nonpolar orders of CH3NH3PbI3 can be distinguished fro…
We have discovered from first-principles an unusual polar state in the low n Sr$_{n+1}$Ti$_n$O$_{3n+1}$ Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) layered perovskites in which ferroelectricity is nearly degenerate with antiferroelectricity, a relatively rare form of ferroic order. We show that epitaxial strain plays a key role in tuning the "perpendicular coherence length" of the ferroelectric mode, and does not induce ferroelectricity in these low dimensional RP materials as is well known to occur in SrTiO$_3$. These systems present an opportunity to manipulate the coherence length of a ferroic distortion in a c…
Exploring the microstructural origins of conductivity and hysteresis in metal halide perovskites via active learning driven automated scanning probe microscopy
Bulk CsEuBr$_3$ and CsEuCl$_3$ are experimentally shown to be magnetic semiconductors that order antiferromagnetically at Neel temperatures of 2.0 K and 1.0 K respectively. Given that nanoparticles and thin films of CsEuCl$_3$ have been reported to order ferromagnetically at a similar temperature, our observation of antiferromagnetic ordering in CsEuBr$_3$ and CsEuCl$_3$ expands the possible applications of halide perovskites to now include spintronic devices where both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic devices can be fabricated from a single material. The conclusion that CsEuCl$_3$ can be u…
The complete irreducible co-representations of the paramagnetic space group provide a simple and direct path to explore the symmetry restrictions of magnetically driven ferroelectricity. The method consists of a straightforward generalization of the method commonly used in the case of displacive modulated systems and allows us to determine, in a simple manner, the full magnetic symmetry of a given phase originated from a given magnetic order parameter. The potential ferroic and magneto-electric properties of that phase can then be established and the exact Landau free energy expansions can be …
Perovskite structure SrMnO$_3$ is a rare example of a multiferroic material where strain-tuning and/or cation substitution could lead to coinciding magnetic and ferroelectric ordering temperatures, which would then promise strong magnetoelectric coupling effects. Here, we establish the temperature and strain dependent ferroic phase diagram of SrMnO$_3$ using first-principles-based effective Hamiltonians. All parameters of these Hamiltonians are calculated using density functional theory, i.e., no fitting to experimental data is required. Temperature dependent properties are then obtained from …
Two-dimensional materials offer opportunities for unravelling unprecedented ordered states at single layer limit. Among such ordered states, Mott phase is rarely explored. Here, we report the Mott phase in van der Waals chromium (II) iodide (CrI2) films. High quality CrI2 films with atomically flat surface and macro size are grown on graphitized 6H-SiC(0001) substrate by molecular beam epitaxy. By in situ low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS), we reveal that the film has a band gap as large as ~3.2 eV, which is nearly thickness independent. Density functional…
The realization of multiferroics in nanostructures, combined with a large electric dipole and ferromagnetic ordering, could lead to new applications, such as high-density multi-state data storage. Although multiferroics have been broadly studied for decades, ferromagnetic ferroelectricity is rarely explored, especially in two-dimensional (2D) systems. Here we report the discovery of 2D ferromagnetic ferroelectricity in layered transition metal halide systems. On the basis of first-principles calculations, we reveal that charged CrBr3 monolayer exhibits in-plane multiferroicity, which is ensure…
We review the characteristics of some carbon based novel superconductors which emerged in the past two decades since the discovery of superconductivity in the high-T_c oxocuprates. In particular, we summarize the properties of ternary layered carbide halides of the rare rarth metals with composition RE2C2X2 (RE = Y, La; X=Cl, Br, I) and of the rare earth di- and sesquicarbides, YC2, LaC2 and La2C3. Finally, we briefly discuss the properties of the recently discovered Ca and Yb intercalated graphite superconductors, CaC6 and YbC6.

Dielectric screening plays an important role in reducing the strength of carrier scattering and trapping by point defects for many semiconductors such as the halide perovskite solar materials. However, it was rarely considered as a screen to find new electronic semiconductors. We performed a material search study using the dielectric properties as a screen to identify potential electronic materials in the class of metal-pnictide ternary sulfosalts, containing Bi or Sb. These salts are basically ionic due to the electronegativity difference between the S and both the metal and pnictogen element…
Low-dimensional semiconducting ferromagnets have attracted considerable attention due to their promising applications as nano-size spintronics. However, realizing robust ferromagnetic couplings that can survive at high temperature is restrained by two decisive factors: super-exchange couplings and anisotropy. Despite widely explored low-dimensional anisotropy, strengthening super-exchange couplings has rarely been investigated. Here, we found that ligands with lower electronegativity can strengthen ferromagnetic super-exchange couplings and further proposed the ligand modulation strategy to en…
The work is necessitated by search for new materials to detect ionizing radiation. The rare-earth ions doped with ternary alkali earth-halide systems are promising scintillators showing high efficiency and energy resolution. Some aspects of crystal growth and data on the structural and luminescence properties of BaBrI and BaClI doped with low concentrations of $\mathrm{Eu^{2+}}$ ions are reported. The crystals are grown by the vertical Bridgman method in sealed quartz ampoule. New crystallography data for BaClI single crystal obtained by single crystal X-ray diffraction method are presented in…
