The complete irreducible co-representations of the paramagnetic space group provide a simple and direct path to explore the symmetry restrictions of magnetically driven ferroelectricity. The method consists of a straightforward generalization of the method commonly used in the case of displacive modulated systems and allows us to determine, in a simple manner, the full magnetic symmetry of a given phase originated from a given magnetic order parameter. The potential ferroic and magneto-electric properties of that phase can then be established and the exact Landau free energy expansions can be derived from general symmetry considerations. In this work, this method is applied to the case of the orthorhombic rare-earth manganites RMnO3. This example will allow us to stress some specific points, such as the differences between commensurate or incommensurate magnetic phases regarding the ferroic and magnetoelectric properties, the possible stabilization of ferroelectricity by a single irreducible order parameter or the possible onset of a polarization oriented parallel to the magnetic modulation. The specific example of TbMnO3 will be considered in more detail, in order to characterize the role played by the magneto-electric effect in the mechanism for the polarization rotation induced by an external magnetic field.
We present results of local spin density approximation (LSDA) pseudopotential calculations for the perovskite structure oxide, bismuth manganite (BiMnO3). The origin of the differences between bismuth manganite and other perovskite manganites is determined by first calculating total energies and band structures of the high symmetry cubic phase, then sequentially lowering the magnetic and structural symmetry. Our results indicate that covalent bonding between bismuth cations and oxygen anions stabilizes different magnetic and structural phases compared with the rare earth manganites. This is co…
Using a joint approach of density functional theory and model calculations, we demonstrate that a prototypical charge ordered half-doped manganite, La$_{1/2}$Ca$_{1/2}$MnO$_3$ is multiferroic. The combination of a peculiar charge-orbital ordering and a tendency to form spin dimers breaks inversion symmetry, leads to a ferroelectric ground-state with a polarization up to several $μC/cm^2$. The presence of improper ferroelectricity does not depend on hotly debated structural details of this material: in the Zener-polaron structure we find a similar dramatic ferroelectric response with a large po…
This work investigates the magnetically driven ferroelectricity in orthorhombic manganites RMnO3 (R=Gd, Dy or Tb) from the point of view of the symmetry. The method adopted generalizes the one used to characterize the polar properties of displacive modulated structures to the case of an irreducible magnetic order parameter. The symmetry conditions for magnetically induced ferroelectricity are established and the Landau-Devonshire free energy functionals derived from general symmetry considerations. The ferroelectric polarisation observed in DyMnO3 and TbMnO3 at zero magnetic field is explained…
An incommensurate phase refers to a solid state in which the period of a superstructure is incommensurable with the primitive unit cell. Recently the incommensurate phase is induced by applying an in-plane strain to hexagonal manganites, which demonstrates single chiral modulation of six domain variants. Here we employ Landau theory in combination with the phase-field method to investigate the incommensurate phase in hexagonal manganites. It is shown that the equilibrium wave length of the incommensurate phase is determined by temperature and the magnitude of the applied strain, and a temperat…
Ferroelectricity has been found to occur in several insulating systems, such as TbMnO$_3$ (TMO) and Ni$_3$V$_2$O$_8$ (NVO) which have more than one phase with incommensurately modulated long-range magnetic order. Here we give a phenomenological model which relates the symmetries of the magnetic structure as obtained from neutron diffraction to the development and orientation of a spontaneous ferroelectric moment induced by the magnetic ordering. This model leads directly to the formulation of a microscopic spin-phonon interaction which gives explains the observed phenomena. The results are giv…
We argue that the homogeneous distribution of spins in the spin-spiral state of orthorhombic manganites is deformed by the relativistic spin-orbit interaction. The thus induced spin-spiral inhomogeneity gives rise to the ferroelectric response of the purely electronic origin in even-periodic magnetic structures. The mechanism is generic and explains the appearance of ferroelectricity in the twofold periodic structure of HoMnO3 as well as the fourfold periodic structure of TbMnO3. Nevertheless, odd-periodic magnetic structures preserve the inversion symmetry and thus are not ferroelectric. Our …
We study the existence of incommensurate phases in the phase diagram of the two orbital double exchange model coupled with Jahn-Teller phonons and with superexchange interactions. In agreement with experimental results, we find that undoped manganites $RMnO_3$ ($R$ being some rare earth element) show temperature induced commensurate-incommensurate phase transitions. In the incommensurate phase the magnetic wave vector varies with temperature. The incommensurate phase arises from the competition between the short range antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction and the long range ferromagnetic…
We review the phenomenology of coupled magnetic and electric order parameters for systems in which ferroelectric and incommensurate magnetic order occur simultaneously. We discuss the role that such materials might play in fabricating novel magnetoelectric devices. Then we briefly review the mean-field description of ferroelectricity and modulated magnetic ordering as a preliminary to analyzing the symmetry of the interaction between the spontaneous polarization and the order parameters describing long-range modulated magnetic ordering. As illustration we show how this formulation provides a p…
Multiferroic rare earth manganites attracted recent attention because of the coexistence of different types of magnetic and ferroelectric orders resulting in complex phase diagrams and a wealth of physical phenomena. The coupling and mutual interference of the different orders and the large magnetoelectric effect observed in several compounds are of fundamental interest and bear the potential for future applications in which the dielectric (magnetic) properties can be modified by the onset of a magnetic (dielectric) transition or the application of a magnetic (electric) field. The physical mec…
The commensurate and incommensurate magnetic structures of the magnetoelectric system YMn$_{2}$O$_{5}$, as determined from neutron diffraction, were found to be spin-density waves lacking a global center of symmetry. We propose a model, based on a simple magneto-elastic coupling to the lattice, which enables us to predict the polarization based entirely on the observed magnetic structure. Our data accurately reproduce the temperature-dependence of the spontaneous polarization, in particular its sign reversal at the commensurate-incommensurate transition.
The microscopic origin of the magnetically-driven ferroelectricity in collinear AFM-E orthorhombic manganites is explained by means of first-principles Wannier functions. We show that the polarization is mainly determined by the "asymmetric electron hopping" of orbitally-polarized Mn eg states, implicit in the peculiar in-plane zig-zag spin arrangement in the AFM-E configuration. In ortho-HoMnO3, Wannier function centers are largely displaced with respect to corresponding ionic positions, implying that the final polarization is strongly affected by a purely electronic contribution, at variance…
We discuss the particle size driven tunability of the coexistence of ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity in Pr0.67Ca0.33MnO3(PCMO) with the help of x ray diffraction, magnetization, impedance spectroscopy, and remanent polarization measurements. The remanent polarization measurements using the positive up negative down method clearly prove the existence of ferroelectricity in PCMO with phase separation between Zener polaron(ZP) ordered P21nm and disordered Pbnm structures. We also find that the ferroelectric response is enhanced in nanocrystalline samples so long as ZP ordering is not destroye…
TbMnO3 is an orthorhombic insulator where incommensurate spin order for temperature T_N < 41K is accompanied by ferroelectric order for T < 28K. To understand this, we establish the magnetic structure above and below the ferroelectric transition using neutron diffraction. In the paraelectric phase, the spin structure is incommensurate and longitudinally-modulated. In the ferroelectric phase, however, there is a transverse incommensurate spiral. We show that the spiral breaks spatial inversion symmetry and can account for magnetoelectricity in TbMnO3.
In this contribution to the special issue on multiferroics we focus on multiferroicity driven by different forms of charge ordering. We will present the generic mechanisms by which charge ordering can induce ferroelectricity in magnetic systems. There is a number of specific classes of materials for which this is relevant. We will discuss in some detail $(i)$ perovskite manganites of the type (PrCa)MnO$_3$, $(ii)$ the complex and interesting situation in magnetite Fe$_3$O$_4$, $(iii)$ strongly ferroelectric frustrated LuFe$_2$O$_4$, $(iv)$ an example of a quasi one-dimensional organic system. …
We report on the dielectric properties of epitaxial [001] and [100]-textured thin films of antiferromagnetic orthorhombic YMnO3 and their variation under compressive epitaxial strain. It is found that weakly strained YMnO3 films are ferroelectric with a polarization along c-axis switchable by 90 degrees by an external magnetic field. When reducing film thickness and increasing epitaxial strain, the ferroelectric order is progressively suppressed. Analysis of structural, dielectric and magnetic data indicates that suppression of ferroelectricity when reducing thickness is accompanied by an enla…
The controversy regarding the ferroelectric behavior of hexagonal InMnO$_3$ is resolved by using a combination of x-ray diffraction (XRD), piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM), second harmonic generation (SHG), and density functional theory (DFT). While XRD data show a symmetry-lowering unit-cell tripling, which is also found in the multiferroic hexagonal manganites of $P6_3cm$ symmetry, PFM and SHG do not detect ferroelectricity at ambient or low temperature, in striking contrast to the behavior in the multiferroic counterparts. We propose instead a centrosymmetric $P\bar{3}c$ phase as the gr…
Cupric oxide is a unique magnetic ferroelectric material with a transition temperature significantly higher than the boiling point of liquid nitrogen. However, the mechanism of high-T$_c$ multiferroicity in CuO remains puzzling. In this paper, we clarify the mechanism of high-T$_c$ multiferroicity in CuO, using combined first-principles calculations and an effective Hamiltonian model. We find that CuO contains two magnetic sublattices, with strong intrasublattice interactions and weakly frustrated intersublattice interactions, which may represent one of the main reasons for the high ordering t…
We show that the symmetry of the spin zigzag chain E phase of the orthorhombic perovskite manganites and nickelates allows for the existence of a finite ferroelectric polarization. The proposed microscopic mechanism is independent of spin-orbit coupling. We predict that the polarization induced by the E-type magnetic order can potentially be enhanced by up to two orders of magnitude with respect to that in the spiral magnetic phases of TbMnO3 and similar multiferroic compounds.
Epitaxial orthorhombic Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 (HZO) films on La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) electrodes show robust ferroelectricity, with high polarization, endurance and retention. However, no similar results have been achieved using other perovskite electrodes so far. Here, LSMO and other perovskite electrodes are compared. A small amount of orthorhombic phase and low polarization is found in HZO films grown on La-doped BaSnO3 and Nb-doped SrTiO3, while null amounts of orthorhombic phase and polarization are detected in films on LaNiO3 and SrRuO3. The critical effect of the electrode on the stabilized phases…
The improper ferroelectricity in YMnO$_3$ and other related multiferroic hexagonal manganites are known to cause topologically protected ferroelectric domains that give rise to rich and diverse physical phenomena. The local structure and structural coherence across the ferroelectric transition, however, were previously not well understood. Here we reveal the evolution of the local structure with temperature in YMnO$_3$ using neutron total scattering techniques, and interpret them with the help of first-principles calculations. The results show that, at room temperature, the local and average s…
Ferroelectricity is observed in orthorhombic $HoMnO_3$ and $YMnO_3$ at the magnetic lock-in transitions into an E-type structure or an incommensurate phase with a temperature independent wave vector, respectively. In $HoMnO_3$ the ferroelectric polarization strongly depends on the external magnetic field indicating the involvement of the rare earth moment order in this compound. The results are discussed within the framework of recent theoretical models, in particular the double exchange driven polar displacements predicted for E-type magnetic structures.
We have determined the magnetic structure of the low-temperature incommensurate phase of multiferroic YMn2O5 using single-crystal neutron diffraction. By employing corepresentation analysis, we have ensured full compliance with both symmetry and physical constraints, so that the electrical polarization must lie along the b axis, as observed. The evolution of the spin components and propagation through the commensurate-incommensurate phase boundary points unambiguously at the exchange-striction mechanism as the primary driving force for ferroelectricity.
The order parameters of the magnetic, charge and structural orders at half-doped manganites are identified. A corresponding Landau theory of the phase transitions is formulated. Many structural and thermodynamical behaviors are accounted for and clarified within the framework. In particular, the theory provides a unified picture for the scenario of the phase transitions and their nature with respect to the variation of the tolerance factor of the manganites. It also accounts for the origin of the incommensurate nature of the orbital order and its subsequently accompanying antiferromagnetic ord…
We have performed simultaneous measurements of magnetic chirality by using polarized neutrons and electric polarization along the b-axis of single crystals of YMn$^{4+}$(Mn$_{1-x}$Ga$_{x}$)$^{3+}$O$_{5}$ with $x=0.047$ and 0.12, in which nonmagnetic Ga-ions dilute Mn$^{3+}$ spins. The $x=0.047$ sample exhibits high-temperature incommensurate (HT-ICM), commensurate (CM), and low-temperature incommensurate (LT-ICM) magnetic phases in order of decreasing temperature, whereas the $x=0.12$ sample exhibits only HT-ICM and LT-ICM phases. Here, the CM and LT-ICM phases are ferroelectric and weak-ferro…
Hybrid Improper Ferroelectricity (HIF) allows the generation of an electrical polarization in the AA'BB'O$_6$ double perovskite materials thanks to the combination of two non-polar octahedral distortions. Nevertheless, for selected combination of the A/A' cations a non-polar incommensurate phase is observed with average symmetry $C2/m$. Thanks to a detailed crystallographic description of the incommensurate phase, based on electron, neutron and x-ray diffraction data, we show that the incommensurate modulation is related to an abrupt change of the out-of-phase tilting along the a- and c-axis w…
Improper ferroelectricity (trimerization) in the hexagonal manganites RMnO$_3$ leads to a network of coupled structural and magnetic vortices that induce domain wall magnetoelectricity and magnetization neither of which, however, occurs in the bulk. Here we combined first-principles calculations, group-theoretic techniques, and microscopic spin models to show how the trimerization not only induces a polarization but also a bulk magnetization and bulk magnetoelectric (ME) effect. This results in the existence of a bulk linear ME vortex structure or a bulk ME coupling such that if direction of p…
We use first-principles calculations based on density functional theory to investigate the interplay between oxygen vacancies, A-site cation size / tolerance factor, epitaxial strain, ferroelectricity and magnetism in the perovskite manganite series, AMnO3 (A=Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+). We find that, as expected, increasing the volume through either chemical pressure or tensile strain generally lowers the formation energy of neutral oxygen vacancies consistent with their established tendency to expand the lattice. Increased volume also favors polar distortions, both because competing rotations of the o…
The double exchange model describing the coupling between conduction electrons and localized magnetic moments is relevant for a large family of physical systems including manganites. Here we reveal that the one dimensional double exchange model with an incommensurate magnetic elliptical spiral is a topological insulator with a Chern number $2\mathbb{Z}$ in the two dimensional space with one physical dimension and one ancillary dimension spanned by the Goldstone mode of the spiral. Moreover, the electronic states can be localized for a strong local exchange coupling. The topological protected e…
Ferroelectric materials possess a spontaneous electric polarization and may be utilized in various technological applications ranging from non-volatile memories to solar cells and light polarizers. Recently, hexagonal rare-earth manganites, h-RMnO$_3$ (R is a rare-earth ion) have attracted considerable interest due to their intricate multiferroic properties and improper ferroelectricity characterized by a sizable remnant polarization and high Curie temperature. Here, we demonstrate that these compounds can serve as very efficient photovoltaic materials and, in addition, possess remarkable opti…
Whenever a symmetry in the ground state of a system is broken, topological defects will exist. These defects are essential for understanding phase transitions in low dimensional systems[1]. Excitingly in some unique condensed matter systems the defects are also the low energy electric charge excitations. This is the case of skyrmions in quantum Hall ferromagnets[2] and solitons in polymers[3]. Orbital order present in several transitions metal compounds[4-6] could give rise to topological defects. Here we argue that the topological defects in orbital ordered half doped manganites are orbital s…
The spiral magnetic structure and underlying spin lattice of BiMnFe2O6 are investigated by low-temperature neutron powder diffraction and density functional theory band structure calculations. In spite of the random distribution of the Mn3+ and Fe3+ cations, this compound undergoes a transition into an incommensurate antiferromagnetically ordered state below TN ~ 220 K. The magnetic structure is characterized by the propagation vector k=[0,beta,0] with beta ~ 0.14 and the P22_12_11'(0 β0)0s0s magnetic superspace symmetry. It comprises antiferromagnetic helixes propagating along the b-axis. The…
Quantum effects fundamentally engender exotic physical phenomena in macroscopic systems, which advance next-generation technological applications. Rotational tunneling that represents the quantum phenomenon of the librational motion of molecules is ubiquitous in hydrogen-contained materials. However, its direct manifestation in realizing macroscopic physical properties is elusive. Here we report an observation of reentrant ferroelectricity under low pressure that is mediated by the rotational tunneling of ammonium ions in molecule-based (NH$_4$)$_2$FeCl$_5 \cdot$H$_2$O. Applying a small pressu…
We use neutron scattering to investigate the doping evolution of the magnetic correlations in the single-layer manganite $\rm Pr_{\it 1-x}Ca_{\it 1+x}MnO_4$, away from the $x=0.5$ composition where the CE-type commensurate antiferromagnetic (AF) structure is stable. We find that short-range incommensurate spin correlations develop as the system is electron doped ($x<0.5$), which coexist with the CE-type AF order. This suggests that electron doping in this system induces an inhomogeneous electronic self-organization, where commensurate AF patches with $x=0.5$ are separated by electron-rich doma…
Magnetodielectric materials are characterized by a strong coupling of magnetic and dielectric properties and in rare cases simultaneously exhibit both, magnetic and polar order. Among other multiferroics, TbMnO3 and GdMnO3 reveal a strong magneto-dielectric (ME) coupling and as a consequence fundamentally new spin excitations exist: Electro-active magnons, or electromagnons, i. e. spin waves which can be excited by ac electric fields. Here we show that these excitations appear in the phase with an incommensurate (IC) magnetic structure of the manganese spins. In external magnetic fields this I…
Structural and magnetic properties of the doped terbium manganites (Tb,A)MnO3 (A = Gd, Dy and Ho) have been investigated using first-principles calculations and further confirmed by subse- quent experimental studies. Both computational and experimental studies suggest that compared to the parent material, namely, TbMnO3 (with a magnetic moment of 9.7 /muB for Tb3+) Dy- and Ho- ion substituted TbMnO3 results in an increase in the magnetic moment (< 10.6/muB for Dy3+ and Ho3+). The observed spiral-spin AFM order in TbMnO3 is stable with respect to the dopant substitutions, which modify the Mn-O-…
Ferroelectricity in the incommensurate helical magnetic phase (below TN, 43K) of alpha CaCr2O4 has been confirmed by pyroelectric measurements. Magnetoelectric and magnetodielectric coupling exist below TN and are proportional to the square of magnetic field. From symmetry analysis, we suggest that the presence of an external electric field destabilizes the symmetrical 2221' phase and stabilizes 21' symmetry. This provides a unique system in which polarization varies as the fourth-degree of the order-parameter amplitude and exhibit a vanishingly small value below the first-order transition at …
Controlling the ferroelectricity and magnetism in multiferroic materials has been an important research topic. We report the formation of a highly polarized state in multiferroic DyMnO3 single crystals which develops well above the magnetic transition temperatures, and we attribute it the thermally stimulated depolarization current effect of excess holes forming Mn4+ ions in the system. We also show that this high temperature polarized state intimately correlates with the lower temperature ferroelectric state that is induced by the incommensurate spiral magnetic order of Mn spins. This study d…
The low-temperature ferroelectric polarization of multiferroic $YMn_2O_5$ is completely reversed at a critical pressure of 10 kbar and the phase transition from the incommensurate to the commensurate magnetic phase is induced by pressures above 14 kbar. The high-pressure data correlate with thermal expansion measurements indicating a significant lattice strain at the low-temperature transition into the incommensurate phase. The results support the exchange striction model for the ferroelectricity in multiferroic $RMn_2O_5$ compounds and they show the importance of magnetic frustration as well …
Apart from being so far the only known binary multiferroic compound, CuO has a much higher transition temperature into the multiferroic state, 230 K, than any other known material in which the electric polarization is induced by spontaneous magnetic order, typically lower than 100 K. Although the magnetically induced ferroelectricity of CuO is firmly established, no magnetoelectric effect has been observed so far as direct crosstalk between bulk magnetization and electric polarization counterparts. Here we demonstrate that high magnetic fields of about 50 T are able to suppress the helical mod…
Competing interactions and geometric frustration provide favourable conditions for exotic states of matter. Such competition often causes multiple phase transitions as a function of temperature and can lead to magnetic structures that break inversion symmetry, thereby inducing ferroelectricity [1-4]. Although this phenomenon is understood phenomenologically [3-4], it is of great interest to have a conceptually simpler system in which ferroelectricity appears coincident with a single magnetic phase transition. Here we report the first such direct transition from a paramagnetic and paraelectric …
The magnetostructural transitions and magnetoelectric effects reported in TbMn2O5 are described theoretically and shown to correspond to two essentially different mechanisms for the induced ferroelectricity. The incommensurate and commensurate phases observed between 38 and 24 K exhibit a hybrid pseudoproper ferroelectric nature resulting from an effective bilinear coupling of the polarization with the antiferromagnetic order parameter. This explains the high sensitivity of the dielectric properties of the material under applied magnetic field. Below 24 K the incommensurate phase shows a stand…

Huazhong University of Science and Technology(华中科技大学);Southeast University(东南大学);Chinese Academy of Sciences(中国科学院);University of Texas at Austin(德克萨斯大学奥斯汀分校)
Neutron diffraction measurements under high magnetic fields have been performed for the multiferroic compound HoMn$_{2}$O$_{5}$. At zero field, high-temperature incommensurate magnetic (HT-ICM) -- commensurate magnetic (CM) -- low-temperature incommensurate magnetic (LT-ICM) orders occur with decreasing temperature, where ferroelectric polarization arises only in the CM phase. Upon applying a magnetic field, the LT-ICM phase completely disappears and the CM phase is induced at the lowest temperature. This field-induced CM state is completely associated with the field-induced electric polarizat…
The interplay of nearly degenerate orders in quantum materials can lead to a myriad of emergent phases. A prominent case is that of the high-Tc cuprates for which the relationship between superconductivity and a short-ranged, incommensurate charge density wave in the CuO2 planes involving the dx2-y2 orbitals (Cu-CDW) is a subject of great current interest. Strong modifications of the strength and coherence of this Cu-CDW have been achieved by applying large magnetic fields, uniaxial pressure, or via the interfacial coupling in cuprate/manganite multilayers. However, such modifications do not a…
With the perovskite multiferroic RMnO3 (R = Gd, Tb, Dy) as guidance, we argue that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) provides the microscopic mechanism for the coexistence and strong coupling between ferroelectricity and incommensurate magnetism. We use Monte-Carlo simulations and zero temperature exact calculations to study a model incorporating the double-exchange, superexchange, Jahn-Teller and DMI terms. The phase diagram contains a multiferroic phase between A and E antiferromagnetic phases, in excellent agreement with experiments.
The low-temperature magnetic structure of \HG has been studied by high-resolution powder neutron diffraction. Long-range incommensurate magnetic order sets in at T$_N\sim$22K with propagation vector \textbf{k}=(0,0,$\sim$0.18). On cooling below T$_N$, the propagation vector increases and saturates at the commensurate value \textbf{k}=(0,0,0.25). The magnetic structure below T$_N$ consists of ferromagnetic layers in the \textit{ab}-plane stacked in a spiral arrangement along the \textit{c}-axis. Symmetry analysis using corepresentations theory reveals a point group symmetry in the ordered magne…
CuCrO2 offers insights into the different types of spiral magnetic orderings that can form spontaneously due to frustration in triangular-lattice antiferromagnets. We explore the magnetic phase diagram up to 65 T along all the principle axes, and also use electric polarization to probe changes in the spiral order at high magnetic fields. It is known that at zero magnetic field a proper-screw spiral of the Cr S = 3/2 spins forms that in turn induces electric polarization with six possible orientations ab-plane. Applied magnetic fields in the (hard) ab-plane have been shown to induce a transitio…
In order to investigate nature of the antiferromagnetic structures in perovskite RMnO3, we study a Heisenberg J1-J2 model with bond alternation using analytical and numerical approaches. The magnetic phase diagram which includes incommensurate spiral states and commensurate collinear states is reproduced. We discuss that the magnetic structure with up-up-down-down spin configuration (E-type structure) and the ferroelectricity emerge cooperatively to stabilize this phase. Magnetoelastic couplings are crucial to understand the magnetic and electric phase diagram of RMnO3.
There has been tremendous research activity in the field of magneto-electric (ME) multiferroics after Kimura et al. [1] showed that antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric order coexist in orthorhom- bically distorted perovskite TbMnO3 and are strongly coupled. It is now generally accepted that ferroelectricity in TbMnO3 is induced by magnetic long range order that breaks the symmetry of the crystal and creates a polar axis [2]. One remaining key question is whether magnetic order can induce ferroelectric polarization that is as large as that of technologically useful materials. We show that ferro…
Incommensurate (IC) charge-order (CO) and spin density wave (SDW) order in electron doped SrMn1-xWxO3-δ (x= 0.08 to 0.1875) have been studied using neutron diffraction. The study highlights the drastic effect of electron doping on the emergence of magnetic ground states which were not revealed in manganites before. With increasing (x) the crystal structure changes from simple tetragonal (P4/mmm) to an IC-CO modulated structure with super space-group P2/m(α\b{eta}0)00 having ab-planer ferro order of 3dx2-y2 orbitals in a compressed tetragonal (c<a) lattice. The IC-CO order is found to be intimat…
Comprehensive x-ray scattering studies, including resonant scattering at Mn L-edge, Tb L- and M-edges, were performed on single crystals of TbMn2O5. X-ray intensities were observed at a forbidden Bragg position in the ferroelectric phases, in addition to the lattice and the magnetic modulation peaks. Temperature dependences of their intensities and the relation between the modulation wave vectors provide direct evidences of exchange striction induced ferroelectricity. Resonant x-ray scattering results demonstrate the presence of multiple magnetic orders by exhibiting their different temperatur…
We report on structural, magnetic, dielectric, and thermodynamic properties of (Eu:Y)MnO3 for Y doping levels 0 <= x < 1. This system resembles the multiferroic perovskite manganites RMnO3 (with R= Gd, Dy, Tb) but without the interference of magnetic contributions of the 4f-ions. In addition, it offers the possibility to continuously tune the influence of the A-site ionic radii. For small concentrations x <= 0.1 we find a canted antiferromagnetic and paraelectric groundstate. For higher concentrations x <= 0.3 ferroelectric polarization coexists with the features of a long wavelength incommens…
The layered β-NaMnO2, a promising Na-ion energy-storage material has been investigated for its triangular lattice capability to promote complex magnetic configurations that may release symmetry restrictions for the coexistence of ferroelectric and magnetic orders. The complexity of the neutron powder diffraction patterns underlines that the routinely adopted commensurate structural models are inadequate. Instead, a single-phase superspace symmetry description is necessary, demonstrating that the material crystallizes in a compositionally modulated q= (0.077(1), 0, 0) structure. Here, Mn3+ Jahn…
Magnetic and ferroelectric properties of layered geometrically frustrated cluster compound FeTe$_2$O$_5$Br were investigated with single-crystal neutron diffraction and dielectric measurements. Incommensurate amplitude modulated magnetic order with the wave vector $\bf{q}$=($\half$, 0.463, 0) develops below $T_N=10.6(2) {\rm K}$. Simultaneously, a ferroelectric order with the spontaneous polarization perpendicular to ${\bf q}$ and to Fe$^{3+}$ magnetic moments emerges. The observed ferroelectricity and extraordinary linear scaling of the ferroelectric and magnetic order parameter are provoked …
The magnetic properties of the high temperature alpha form of the CaCr2O4 compound have been investigated for the first time by magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and powder neutron diffraction. The system undergoes a unique magnetic phase transition at 43K to a long range order incommensurate helical phase with magnetic propagation vector k=(0,0.3317(2),0). The magnetic model proposed from neutron diffraction data shows that the plane of rotation of the spins is perpendicular to the wave-vector, and that the magnetic modulation is consistent with two modes belonging to distinct irreducibl…
