The age $\mathcal{A}(G)$ of a graph $G$ (undirected and without loops) is the collection of finite induced subgraphs of $G$, considered up to isomorphy and ordered by embeddability. It is well-quasi-ordered (wqo) for this order if it contains no infinite antichain. A graph is \emph{path-minimal} if it contains finite induced paths of unbounded length and every induced subgraph $G'$ with this property embeds $G$. We construct $2^{\aleph_0}$ path-minimal graphs whose ages are pairwise incomparable with set inclusion and which are wqo. Our construction is based on uniformly recurrent sequences and lexicographical sums of labelled graphs.
A class of countable infinite graphs with unbounded vertex degree is considered. In these graphs, the vertices of large degree `repel' each other, which means that the path distance between two such vertices cannot be smaller than a certain function of their degrees. Assuming that this function increases sufficiently fast, we prove that the number of finite connected subgraphs (animals) of order N containing a given vertex x is exponentially bounded in N for N belonging to an infinite subset N_x of natural numbers. Under a less restrictive condition, the same result is obtained for the number …
We prove that the graphs $T\boxslash P$ have unbounded stack number and queue number $3$, where $T$ is a tree and $P$ is a path, and $\boxslash$ denotes the graph strong product but with one of the directions removed. The previous best known results is that graphs with queue number $4$ can have unbounded stack number.
A properly colored cycle (path) in an edge-colored graph is a cycle (path) with consecutive edges assigned distinct colors. A monochromatic triangle is a cycle of length $3$ with the edges assigned a same color. It is known that every edge-colored complete graph without containing monochromatic triangles always contains a properly colored Hamilton path. In this paper, we investigate the existence of properly colored cycles in edge-colored complete graphs when monochromatic triangles are forbidden. We obtain a vertex-pancyclic analogous result combined with a characterization of all the excepti…
Transductions are a general formalism for expressing transformations of graphs (and more generally, of relational structures) in logic. We prove that a graph class $\mathscr{C}$ can be $\mathsf{FO}$-transduced from a class of bounded-height trees (that is, has bounded shrubdepth) if, and only if, from $\mathscr{C}$ one cannot $\mathsf{FO}$-transduce the class of all paths. This establishes one of the three remaining open questions posed by Blumensath and Courcelle about the $\mathsf{MSO}$-transduction quasi-order, even in the stronger form that concerns $\mathsf{FO}$-transductions instead of $…
A cycle is a graph is dominating if every edge of the graph is incident with a vertex of the cycle. In this paper, we investigate the characterization of the class of the forbidden pairs guaranteeing the existence of a dominating cycle and show the following two results: (i) Every $2$-connected $\{P_{5}, K_{4}^{-}\}$-free graph contains a longest cycle which is a dominating cycle. (ii) Every $2$-connected $\{P_{5}, W^{*}\}$-free graph contains a longest cycle which is a dominating cycle. Here $P_{5}$ is the path of order $5$, $K_{4}^{-}$ is the graph obtained from the complete graph of order $…
An 'induced restriction' of a simple binary matroid $M$ is a restriction $M|F$, where $F$ is a flat of $M$. We consider the class $\mathcal{M}$ of all simple binary matroids $M$ containing neither a free matroid on three elements (which we call a 'claw'), nor a Fano plane as an induced restriction. We give an exact structure theorem for this class; two of its consequences are that the matroids in $\mathcal{M}$ have unbounded critical number, while the matroids in $\mathcal{M}$ not containing the clique $M(K_5)$ as an induced restriction have critical number at most $2$.
We call a finite undirected graph minimally k-matchable if it has at least k distinct perfect matchings but deleting any edge results in a graph which has not. An odd subdivision of some graph G is any graph obtained by replacing every edge of G by a path of odd length connecting its end vertices such that all these paths are internally disjoint. We prove that for every k>0 there exists a finite set of graphs S(k) such that every minimally k-matchable graph is isomorphic to a disjoint union of an odd subdivision of some graph from S(k) and any number of copies of the complete graph on two vert…
For a graph $G$ and a tree-decomposition $(T, \mathcal{B})$ of $G$, the chromatic number of $(T, \mathcal{B})$ is the maximum of $χ(G[B])$, taken over all bags $B \in \mathcal{B}$. The tree-chromatic number of $G$ is the minimum chromatic number of all tree-decompositions $(T, \mathcal{B})$ of $G$. The path-chromatic number of $G$ is defined analogously. In this paper, we introduce an operation that always increases the path-chromatic number of a graph. As an easy corollary of our construction, we obtain an infinite family of graphs whose path-chromatic number and tree-chromatic number are dif…
A $P_\ell$-decomposition of a graph $G$ is a set of paths with $\ell$ edges in $G$ that cover the edge set of $G$. Favaron, Genest, and Kouider (2010) conjectured that every $(2k+1)$-regular graph that contains a perfect matching admits a $P_{2k+1}$-decomposition. They also verified this conjecture for $5$-regular graphs without cycles of length $4$. In 2015, Botler, Mota, and Wakabayashi verified this conjecture for $5$-regular graphs without triangles. In this paper, we verify it for $(2k+1)$-regular graphs that contain the $k$th power of a spanning cycle; and for $5$-regular graphs that con…
An st-path is a path with the end-vertices s and t. An s-path is a path with an end-vertex s. The results of this paper include necessary and sufficient conditions for a {claw, net}-free graph G with given two different vertices s, t and an edge e to have (1)a Hamiltonian s-path, (2) a Hamiltonian st-path, (3) a Hamiltonian s- and st-paths containing edge e when G has connectivity one, and (4) a Hamiltonian cycle containing e when G is 2-connected. These results imply that a connected {claw, net}-free graph has a Hamiltonian path and a 2-connected {claw, net}-free graph has a Hamiltonian cycle…
We consider the problem of enumerating the permutations containing exactly $k$ occurrences of a pattern of length 3. This enumeration has received a lot of interest recently, and there are a lot of known results. This paper presents an alternative approach to the problem, which yields a proof for a formula which so far only was conjectured (by Noonan and Zeilberger). This approach is based on bijections from permutations to certain lattice paths with ``jumps'', which were first considered by Krattenthaler.
An extremal graph for a given graph $H$ is a graph with maximum number of edges on fixed number of vertices without containing a copy of $H$. The $k$-th power of a path is a graph obtained from a path and joining all pair of vertices of the path with distance less than $k$. Applying a deep theorem of Simonovits, we characterize the extremal graphs of the $k$-th power of paths. This settles a conjecture posed by Xiao, Katona, Xiao and Zamora in a stronger form.

Let f(k) denote the maximum such that every simple undirected graph containing two vertices s,t and k edge-disjoint s-t paths, also contains two vertices u,v and f(k) independent u-v paths. Here, a set of paths is independent if none of them contains an interior vertex of another. We prove that f(k)=k if k<3, and f(k)=3 otherwise.
Although there are very algorithms for embedding graphs on unbounded grids, only few results on embedding or drawing graphs on restricted grids has been published. In this work, we consider the problem of embedding paths and cycles on grid graphs. We give the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of cycles of given length $k$ and paths of given length $k$ between two given vertices in $n$-vertex rectangular grid graphs and introduce two algorithms with running times O$(k)$ and O$(k^2)$ for finding respectively such cycles and paths. Also, we extend our results to $m\times n\tim…
In this paper, we give a polynomial time algorithm which determines if a given graph containing a triangle and no induced seven-vertex path is 3-colorable, and gives an explicit coloring if one exists. In previous work, we gave a polynomial time algorithm for three-coloring triangle-free graphs with no induced seven-vertex path. Combined, our work shows that three-coloring a graph with no induced seven-vertex path can be done in polynomial time.
