In the present work we study the effects of strongly quantizing magnetic fields and finite temperature on the properties of inner crusts of hot neutron stars. The inner crust of a neutron star contains neutron-rich nuclei arranged in a lattice and embedded in gases of free neutrons and electrons. We describe the system within the Wigner-Seitz (WS) cell approximation. The nuclear energy is calculated using Skyrme model with SkM* interaction. To isolate the properties of nuclei we follow the subtraction procedure presented by Bonche, Levit and Vautherin, within the Thomas-Fermi approximation. We obtain the equilibrium properties of inner crust for various density, temperatures and magnetic fields by minimizing the free energy of the WS cell satisfying the charge neutrality and $β-$equilibrium conditions. We infer that at a fixed baryon density and temperature, strong quantizing magnetic field reduces the cell radii, neutron and proton numbers in the cell compared with the field free case. However, the nucleon number in the nucleus increases in presence of magnetic field. The free energy per nucleon also decreases in magnetized inner crust. On the other hand, we find that finite temperature tends to smear out the effects of magnetic field. Our results can be important in the context of $r-$process nucleosynthesis in the binary neutron star mergers.
The iterative method recently proposed for determining the internal constitution of the outer crust of a nonaccreted neutron star is extended to magnetars by taking into account the Landau-Rabi quantization of electron motion induced by the presence of a very high magnetic field. It is shown that in the strongly quantizing regime, the method can be efficiently implemented using new analytical solutions for the transitions between adjacent crustal layers. Detailed numerical computations are performed to assess the performance and precision of the method.
We have studied the various properties of magnetically deformed atoms, replaced by deformed Wigner-Seitz cells, at the outer crust region of strongly magnetized neutron stars (magnetars) using a relativistic version of Thomas-Fermi model in cylindrical coordinates.
We have investigated some of the properties of dense sub-nuclear matter at the crustal region (both the outer crust and the inner crust region) of a magnetar. The relativistic version of Thomas-Fermi (TF) model is used in presence of strong quantizing magnetic field for the outer crust matter. The compressed matter in the outer crust, which is a crystal of metallic iron, is replaced by a regular array of spherically symmetric Wigner-Seitz (WS) cells. In the inner crust region, a mixture of iron and heavier neutron rich nuclei along with electrons and free neutrons has been considered. Conventi…
We show that ions at the low densities and high magnetic fields relevant to the outer crust of magnetars form a novel crystalline phase where ions are strongly coupled along the magnetic field and loosely coupled in the transverse direction. The underlying cause is the anisotropic screening of the Coulomb force by electrons in the presence of a strongly quantizing magnetic field which leads to Friedel oscillations in the ion-ion potential. In particular, the Friedel oscillations are much longer-ranged in the direction of the magnetic field than is the case in the absence of magnetic fields, a …
The outer crust structure and composition of a cold, non-accreting magnetar is studied. We model the outer crust to be made of fully equilibrated matter where ionized nuclei form a Coulomb crystal embedded in an electron gas. The main effects of the strong magnetic field are those of quantizing the electron motion in Landau levels and of modifying the nuclear single particle levels producing, on average, an increased binding of nucleons in nuclei present in the Coulomb lattice. The effect of an homogeneous and constant magnetic field on nuclear masses has been predicted by using a covariant de…
Globally neutral neutron stars, obtained from the solution of the called Einstein-Maxwell-Thomas-Fermi equations that account for all the fundamental interactions, have been recently introduced. These configurations have a more general character than the ones obtained with the traditional Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff, which impose the condition of local charge neutrality. The resulting configurations have a less massive and thinner crust, leading to a new mass-radius relation. Signatures of this new structure of the neutron star on the thermal evolution might be a potential test for this theory.…

The interior of a neutron star (NS) is usually assumed to be made of cold catalyzed matter. However, the outer layers are unlikely to remain in full equilibrium during the formation of the star and its cooling, especially after crystallization. We study the cooling and equilibrium composition of the outer layers of a NS down to crystallization. Here the impurity parameter, usually a free parameter in cooling simulations, is calculated self-consistently using a microscopic model for which a unified equation of state has recently been determined. We follow the evolution of the nuclear distributi…
Using the momentum-dependent MDI effective interaction for nucleons, we have studied the transition density and pressure at the boundary between the inner crust and liquid core of hot neutron stars. We find that their values are larger in neutrino-trapped neutron stars than in neutrino-free neutron stars. Furthermore, both are found to decrease with increasing temperature of a neutron star as well as increasing slope parameter of the nuclear symmetry energy, except that the transition pressure in neutrino-trapped neutron stars for the case of small symmetry energy slope parameter first increas…
In order to study structure of proto-neutron stars and those in subsequent cooling stages, it is of great interest to calculate inhomogeneous hot and cold nuclear matter in a variety of phases. The finite-temperature Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (FT-HFB) theory is a primary choice for this purpose, however, its numerical calculation for superfluid (superconducting) many-fermion systems in three dimensions requires enormous computational costs. To study a variety of phases in the crust of hot and cold neutron stars, we propose an efficient method to perform the FT-HFB calculation with the three-dime…
We present recent work on using astronomical observations of neutron stars to reveal unique insights into nuclear matter that cannot be obtained from laboratories on Earth. First, we discuss our measurement of the rapid cooling of the youngest neutron star in the Galaxy; this provides the first direct evidence for superfluidity and superconductivity in the supra-nuclear core of neutron stars. We show that observations of thermonuclear X-ray bursts on neutron stars can be used to constrain properties of neutron superfluidity and neutrino emission. We describe the implications of rapid neutron s…
We have considered a hot neutron star with a quark core, a mixed phase of quark-hadron matter, and a hadronic matter crust and have determined the equation of state of the hadronic phase and the quark phase, we have then found the equation of state of the mixed phase under the Gibbs conditions. Finally, we have computed the structure of hot neutron star with the quark core and compared our results with those of the neutron star without the quark core. For the quark matter calculations, we have used the MIT bag model in which the total energy of the system is considered as the kinetic energy of…
We study the quiescent luminosities of accreting neutron stars by a new mechanism as neutrino heating for additional deep crustal heating, where the neutrino heating is produced by charged pions decay from the nuclear collisions on the surface of neutron star during its active accretion. For low mass neutron star($\lesssim1.4~M_{\odot}$), as the neutrino heating is little($\lesssim1$ MeV per accreted nucleon) or there would be no neutrino heating, the quiescent luminsoity will be not affected or slightly affected. While for massive neutron star ($\gtrsim2~M_{\odot}$), the quiescent luminosity …
In this work we study the r-mode instability windows and the gravitational wave signatures of neutron stars in the slow rotation approximation using the equation of state obtained from the density dependent M3Y effective interaction. We consider the neutron star matter to be $β$-equilibrated neutron-proton-electron matter at the core with a rigid crust. The fiducial gravitational and viscous timescales, the critical frequencies and the time evolutions of the frequencies and the rates of frequency change are calculated for a range of neutron star masses. We show that the young and hot rotating …
As we go from center toward the surface of a neutron star, the state of baryonic matter changes from the de-confined quark-gluon to a mixed phase of quark and hadronic matter, and a thin crust of hadronic matter. For the quark matter, within MIT bag model, the total energy density of the system is the kinetic energy for non-interacting quarks plus a bag constant. In this article first we have considered a density dependent bag constant obtained using the recent experimental results of CERN SPS on the formation of a quark-gluon plasma. For calculations of the hadron phase, we use the lowest ord…
In cores of supernovae and crusts of neutron stars, nuclei can adopt interesting shapes, such as rods or slabs, etc., which are referred to as nuclear "pasta." Recently, we have been studying the pasta phases focusing on their dynamical aspects with quantum molecular dynamic (QMD) approach. We review our findings on the following topics: dynamical formation of the pasta phases by cooling down the hot uniform nuclear matter; a phase diagram on the density versus temperature plane; structural transitions between the pasta phases induced by compression and their mechanism. Properties of the nucle…
A nuclear density functional can be used to find the binding energy and shell structure of nuclei and the energy gap in superconducting nuclear matter. In this paper, we study the possible application of a nuclear density functional theory to nuclear astrophysics. From energy density functional theory, we can deduce the interaction between nucleons to find a rough estimate of the charge radius of the specific nuclei. Compared to the Finite-Range Thomas Fermi model, we include three-body forces, which might be important at densities several times that of nuclear matter density. We also add the …
Thermal states of neutron stars in soft X-ray transients (SXRTs) are thought to be determined by "deep crustal heating" in the accreted matter that drives the quiescent luminosity and cooling via emission of photons and neutrinos from the interior. In this study, we assume a global thermal steady-state of the transient system and calculate the heating curves (quiescent surface luminosity as a function of mean accretion rate) predicted from theoretical models, taking into account variations in the equations of state, superfluidity gaps, thickness of the light element layer and a phenomenologica…
We review the equation of state of matter in neutron stars from the solid crust through the liquid nuclear matter interior to the quark regime at higher densities. We focus in detail on the question of how quark matter appears in neutron stars, and how it affects the equation of state. After discussing the crust and liquid nuclear matter in the core we briefly review aspects of microscopic quark physics relevant to neutron stars, and quark models of dense matter based on the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio framework, in which gluonic processes are replaced by effective quark interactions. We turn then to …
By assuming that the isospin- and momentum-dependent MDI interaction has a form similar to the Gogny-like effective two-body interaction with a Yukawa finite-range term and the momentum dependence only originates from the finite-range exchange interaction, we determine its parameters by comparing the predicted potential energy density functional in uniform nuclear matter with what has been usually given and used extensively in transport models for studying isospin effects in intermediate-energy heavy-ion collisions as well as in investigating the properties of hot asymmetric nuclear matter and…
We study pinning and unpinning of superfluid vortices in the inner crust of a neutron star using 3-dimensional dynamical simulations. Strong pinning occurs for certain lattice orientations of an idealized, body-centered cubic lattice, and occurs generally in an amorphous or impure nuclear lattice. The pinning force per unit length is $\sim 10^{16}$ dyn cm$^{-1}$ for a vortex-nucleus interaction that is repulsive, and $\sim 10^{17}$ dyn cm$^{-1}$ for an attractive interaction. The pinning force is strong enough to account for observed spin jumps (glitches). Vortices forced through the lattice m…
Using the Landau-level representation for the imaginary part of the photon polarization tensor, we derive an explicit expression for the dilepton production rate from a hot quark-gluon plasma in a quantizing background magnetic field. We study in detail the dependence of the production rate on the dilepton invariant mass and the transverse momentum at mid-rapidity. We also investigate the angular dependence and ellipticity of dilepton emission. By comparing the result with the zero-field Born approximation, we find that the magnetic field leads to a strong enhancement of the dilepton rate at s…
Heavy ion experiments provide important data to test astrophysical models. The high density equation of state can be probed in HI collisions and applied to the hot protoneutron star formed in core collapse supernovae. The Parity Radius Experiment (PREX) aims to accurately measure the neutron radius of $^{208}$Pb with parity violating electron scattering. This determines the pressure of neutron rich matter and the density dependence of the symmetry energy. Competition between nuclear attraction and coulomb repulsion can form exotic shapes called nuclear pasta in neutron star crusts and supernov…
