Lifshitz transitions in two 2D systems with a single quadratic band touching point as the chemical potential is varied have been studied here. The effects of interactions have been studied using the renormalization group (RG) and it is found that at the transition a repulsive interaction is marginally relevant and an attractive interaction is marginally irrelevant. We corroborate the results obtained from the RG calculation by studying a microscopic model whose ground state and Green's functions can be obtained exactly. We find that away from the transition, the system displays an instability towards forming and excitonic condensate.
We study superconductivity driven by screened Coulomb repulsion in three-dimensional Luttinger semimetals with a quadratic band touching and strong spin-orbit coupling. In these semimetals, the Cooper pairs are formed by spin-3/2 fermions with non-trivial wavefunctions. We numerically solve the linear Eliashberg equation to obtain the critical temperature of a singlet s-wave gap function as a function of doping, with account of spin-orbit and self-energy corrections. In order to understand the underlying mechanism of superconductivity, we compute the sensitivity of the critical temperature to …
We investigate the superconductivity of 3D Luttinger semimetals, such as YPtBi, where Cooper pairs are constituted of spin-3/2 quasiparticles. Various pairing mechanisms have already been considered for these semimetals, such as from polar phonons modes, and in this work we explore pairing from the screened electron-electron Coulomb repulsion. In these materials, the small Fermi energy and the spin-orbit coupling strongly influence how charge fluctuations can mediate pairing. We find the superconducting critical temperature as a function of doping for an s-wave order parameter, and determine i…
Motivated by recent experiments on Pr2Ir2O7, we provide a theory of quantum oscillations in the Luttinger model with quadratic band touching, modelled for the spin-orbit-coupled conduction electrons in pyrochlore iridates. The magneto- and Hall resistivities are computed for electron- and hole-doped systems, and the corresponding Shubnikov de Haas (SdH) signals are investigated. The SdH signals are characterized by aperiodic behaviors that originate from the unconventional Landau level structures of the Luttinger model near the neutrality point, such as the inter-Landau level crossing, nonunif…
Realization of topological superconductors is one of the most important goals in studies of topological phases in quantum materials. In this work, we theoretically propose a novel way to attain topological superconductors with non-trivial Fermi surfaces of Bogoliubov quasiparticles. Considering the interacting Luttinger model with $j\!=\!3/2$ electrons, we investigate the dominant superconducting channels for a multi-orbital quadratic band-touching system with finite chemical potential, which breaks the particle-hole symmetry in the normal state. Notably, while the system generally favors d-wa…
The formation of bound states between mobile impurity particles and fermionic atoms has been demonstrated in spin-polarized Fermi gases with attractive interspecies interaction. We investigate bound states of mobile impurities immersed in a two-dimensional system with a symmetry-protected quadratic band touching. In addition to the standard s-wave interaction, we consider an anisotropic dipolar exchange interaction that locally breaks point group symmetries. Using a weak-coupling renormalization group approach and a ladder approximation for the impurity-fermion propagator, we establish that th…
Due to strong spin-orbit coupling, charge carriers in three-dimensional quadratic band touching Luttinger semimetals have non-trivial wavefunctions characterized by a pseudospin of 3/2. We compute the dielectric permittivity of such semimetals at finite doping, within the random phase approximation. Because of interband coupling, the dielectric screening shows a reduced plasma frequency and an increased spectral weight at small wavevectors, compared to a regular quadratic band. This weakens the effective Coulomb potential, modifying the single-particle self-energy for which we present both ana…
Motivated by recent advances in cold atomic systems, we study the equilibrium and quench properties of two dimensional fermions with quadratic band touching at the Fermi level, in the presence of infinitely long range interactions. Unlike when only short range interactions are present, both nematic and quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) states state appear at weak interactions, separated by a narrow coexistence region, whose boundaries mark second and third order quantum phase transitions. After an interaction quench, the QAH order exhibits three distinct regions: persistent or damped oscillations a…
We investigate the role of four-fermion interactions, rotational and particle-hole asymmetries, and their interplay in three-dimensional systems with a quadratic band touching point by virtue of the renormalization group approach, which allows to treat all these facets unbiasedly. The coupled flow evolutions of interaction parameters are derived by taking into account one-loop corrections in order to explore the behaviors of low-energy states. We find four-fermion interaction can drive Gaussian fixed points to be unstable in the low-energy regime. In addition, the rotational and particle-hole …
Dirac and Weyl semimetals with linearly crossing bands are the focus of much recent interest in condensed matter physics. Although they host fascinating phenomena, their physics can be understood in terms of weakly interacting electrons. In contrast, more than 40 years ago, Abrikosov pointed out that quadratic band touchings are generically strongly interacting. We have performed terahertz spectroscopy on films of the conducting pyrochlore Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, which has been shown to host a quadratic band touching. A dielectric constant as large as $\tilde{\varepsilon }/ε_0 \sim 180 $ is observe…
Recently, the field of strongly correlated electrons has begun an intense search for a correlation induced topological insulating phase. An example is the quadratic band touching point which arises in a checkerboard lattice at half-filling, and in the presence of interactions gives rise to topological Mott insulators. In this work, we perform a mean-field theory computation to show that such a system shows instability to topological insulating phases even away from half-filling (chemical potential $μ= 0 $). The interaction parameters consist of on-site repulsion ($ U $), nearest-neighbour repu…
We study Skyrmion quantum numbers, charge and statistics, in (2+1) dimension induced by quadratic band toucing(QBT) fermions. It is shown that induced charge of Skyrmions is twice bigger than corresponding Dirac particles' and their statistics are always bosonic. Applying to the Bernal stacking bi-layer graphene, we show that Skyrmions of quantum spin Hall(QSH) are charge 4e bosons, so their condensation realizes charge $4e$ superconductivity(SC). The phase transition could be a second order, and one candidate theory of the transition is O(5) non linear sigma model(NLSM) with non-zero Wess-Zum…
Studies of twisted moiré systems have been mainly focused on two-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene with Dirac points and transition-metal-dichalcogenide so far. Here we propose a twisted bilayer of 2D systems which feature stable quadratic-band-touching points and find exotic physics different from previously studied twisted moiré systems. Specifically, we show that exactly flat bands can emerge at magic angles and, more interestingly, each flat band exhibits a high Chern number ($C=\pm 2$). We further consider the effect of Coulomb interactions in such magic-angle twisted systems an…
Interaction driven topological phases can significantly enrich the class of topological materials and thus are of great importance. Here, we study the phase diagram of interacting spinless fermions filling the two-dimensional checkerboard lattice with a quadratic band touching (QBT) point. By developing new diagnosis based on the state-of-the-art density-matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization, we determine accurate quantum phase diagram for such a system at half-filling with three distinct phases. For weak nearest-neighboring interactions, we demonstrate the instablity of the Q…
We consider two-dimensional Fermi systems with quadratic band touching and $C_3$ symmetry, as realizable in Bernal-stacked honeycomb bilayers. Within a renormalization-group analysis, we demonstrate the existence of a quantum critical point at a finite value of the density-density interactions, separating a semimetallic disordered phase at weak coupling from a gapped ordered phase at strong coupling. The latter may be characterized by, for instance, antiferromagnetic, quantum anomalous Hall, or charge density wave order. In the semimetallic phase, each point of quadratic band touching splits i…
We construct and discuss the field theory for tensorial nematic order parameter coupled to gapless four-component fermions at the quadratic band touching point in three (spatial) dimensions. Within a properly formulated epsilon-expansion this theory is found to have a quantum critical point, which describes the (presumably continuous) transition from the semimetal into a (nematic) Mott insulator. The latter phase breaks the rotational, but not the time-reversal symmetry, and may be relevant to materials such as gray tin or mercury telluride at low temperatures. The critical point represents a …
Being dispersionless, flat bands on periodic lattices are solely characterized by their macroscopically degenerate eigenstates: compact localized states (CLSs) in real space and Bloch states in reciprocal space. Based on this property, this work presents a straightforward method to build flat-band tight-binding models with short-range hoppings \emph{on any periodic lattice}. The method consists in starting from a CLS and engineering families of Bloch Hamiltonians as quadratic (or linear) functions of the associated Bloch state. The resulting tight-binding models not only exhibit a flat band, b…
We revisit the effect of local interactions on the quadratic band touching (QBT) of Bernal stacked bilayer graphene models using renormalization group (RG) arguments and quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the Hubbard model. We present an RG argument which predicts, contrary to previous studies, that weak interactions do not flow to strong coupling even if the free dispersion has a QBT. Instead they generate a linear term in the dispersion, which causes the interactions to flow back to weak coupling. Consistent with this RG scenario, in unbiased quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the Hubbard mo…
We argue that a three dimensional electronic system with the Fermi level at the quadratic band touching point such as HgTe could be unstable with respect to the spontaneous formation of the (topological) Mott insulator at arbitrary weak long range Coulomb interaction. The mechanism of the instability can be understood as the collision of Abrikosov's non-Fermi liquid fixed point with another, quantum critical, fixed point, which approaches it in the coupling space as the system's dimensionality $d\rightarrow d_{low} +$, with the "lower critical dimension" $2< d_{low}<4$. Arguments for the exist…
It is shown that topological insulating phases driven by interactions can be realized without the need for spin-orbit coupling or large intersite interaction in a two-dimensional system of spin-1/2 fermions with a single pair of parabolically touching bands. Using a weak-coupling, Wilsonian renormalization group procedure, we show that a quantum anomalous Hall phase is realized for Hubbard interaction, while a quantum spin Hall phase is favored for longer-ranged interactions.
We investigate the optical response properties of three-dimensional Luttinger semimetals with the Fermi energy close to a quadratic band touching point. In particular, in order to address recent experiments on the spectroscopy of Pyrochlore Iridates and half-Heusler superconductors, we derive expressions for the optical conductivity in both the normal and general superconducting states in the linear response regime within the random phase approximation. The response functions can be decomposed into contributions from intraband and interband transitions, the latter comprising a genuine signatur…
We have performed extensive density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) studies of the Hubbard model on a honeycomb ladder. The band structure (with Hubbard U=0) exhibits an unusual quadratic band touching at half filling, which is associated with a quantum Lifshitz transition from a band insulator to a metal. %SAK as a function of a third-neighbor hopping parameter. For one electron per site, non-zero $U$ drives the system into an insulating state in which there is no pair-binding between added electrons; this implies that superconductivity driven directly by the repulsive electron-electron i…
Several materials in the regime of strong spin-orbit interaction such as HgTe, the pyrochlore iridate Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, and the half-Heusler compound LaPtBi, as well as various systems related to these three prototype materials, are believed to host a quadratic band touching point at the Fermi level. Recently, it has been proposed that such a three-dimensional gapless state is unstable to a Mott-insulating ground state at low temperatures when the number of band touching points $N$ at the Fermi level is smaller than a certain critical number $N_c$. We further substantiate and quantify this sc…
We propose a novel quantum spin liquid state that can explain many of the intriguing experimental properties of the low-temperature phase of the organic spin liquid candidate materials. This state of paired fermionic spinons preserves all symmetries of the system, and it has a gapless excitation spectrum with quadratic bands that touch at momentum ~ k = 0. This quadratic band touching is protected by the symmetry of the system. Using variational Monte Carlo techniques, we show that this state has highly competitive energy in the triangular lattice Heisenberg model supplemented with a realistic…
Abstract We study a two-band dispersive Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model in 1 + 1 dimension. We suggest a model that describes a semimetal with quadratic dispersion at half-filling. We compute the Green's function at the saddle point using a combination of analytical and numerical methods. Employing a scaling symmetry of the Schwinger-Dyson equations that becomes transparent in the strongly dispersive limit, we show that the exact solution of the problem yields a distinct type of non-Fermi liquid with sublinear $ρ\propto T^{2/5}$ temperature dependence of the resistivity. A scaling analysis indic…
Superconducting instability can occur in three-dimensional quadratic band crossing semimetals only at a finite coupling strength, due to the vanishing of density of states at the quadratic band touching point. Since realistic materials are always disordered to some extent, we study the effect of short-ranged correlated disorder on this superconducting quantum critical point, using a controlled loop-expansion applying dimensional regularization. The renormalization group (RG) scheme allows us to determine the RG flows of the various interaction strengths, and shows that disorder destroys the su…
We present a matrix-product state (MPS)-based quadratically convergent density-matrix renormalization group self-consistent-field (DMRG-SCF) approach. Following a proposal by Werner and Knowles (JCP 82, 5053, (1985)), our DMRG-SCF algorithm is based on a direct minimization of an energy expression which is correct to second-order with respect to changes in the molecular orbital basis. We exploit a simultaneous optimization of the MPS wave function and molecular orbitals in order to achieve quadratic convergence. In contrast to previously reported (augmented Hessian) Newton-Raphson and super-co…
We study the interaction between elliptically polarized light and a three-dimensional Luttinger semimetal with quadratic band touching using Floquet theory. In the absence of light, the touching bands can have the same or the opposite signs of the curvature; in each case, we show that simply tuning the light parameters allows us to create a zoo of Weyl semimetallic phases. In particular, we find that double and single Weyl points can coexist at different energies, and they can be tuned to be type I or type II. We also find an unusual phase transition, in which a pair of Weyl nodes form at fini…

We investigate unconventional superconductivity in three-dimensional electronic systems with the chemical potential close to a quadratic band touching point in the band dispersion. Short-range interactions can lead to d-wave superconductivity, described by a complex tensor order parameter. We elucidate the general structure of the corresponding Ginzburg--Landau free energy and apply these concepts to the case of an isotropic band touching point. For vanishing chemical potential, the ground state of the system is given by the superconductor analogue of the uniaxial nematic state, which features…
We investigate the impacts of combination of fermion-fermion interactions and impurity scatterings on the low-energy stabilities of two-dimensional asymmetric materials with a quadratic band crossing point by virtue of the renormalization group that allows us to treat distinct sorts of physical ingredients on the same footing. The coupled flow evolutions of all interaction parameters which carry the central physical information are derived by taking into account one-loop corrections. Several intriguing results are manifestly extracted from these entangled evolutions. At first, we realize that …
A (single flavor) quadratic band crossing in two dimensions is known to have a generic instability towards a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) ground state for infinitesimal repulsive interactions. Here we introduce a generalization of a quadratic band crossing which is protected only by rotational symmetry. By focusing on the representative case of a parabolic and flat band touching, which also allows for a straightforward lattice realization, the interaction induced nematic phase is found generally to compete successfully with the QAH insulator, and to become the dominant instability in certain p…
Using a functional renormalization group approach, we study interaction-driven instabilities in quadratic band crossing point two-orbital models in two dimensions, extending a previous study of Sun et al. [1]. The wavevector-dependence of the Bloch eigenvectors of the free Hamiltonian causes interesting instabilities toward spin nematic, quantum anomalous Hall and quantum spin Hall states. In contrast with other known examples of interaction-driven topological insulators, in the system studied here, the QSH state occurs at arbitrarily small interaction strength and for rather simple intra- and…
We examine a basic lattice model of interacting fermions that exhibits quadratic band crossing points (QBCPs) in the non-interacting limit. In particular, we consider spinless fermions on the honeycomb lattice with nearest neighbor hopping $t$ and third-nearest neighbor hopping $t''$, which exhibits fine-tuned QBCPs at the corners of the Brillouin zone for ${t'' = t/2}$. In this situation, the density of states remains finite at the Fermi level of the half-filled band and repulsive nearest-neighbor interactions $V$ lead to a charge-density-wave (CDW) instability at infinitesimally small $V$ in…
Influence of short-range four-fermion interactions on quadratic and cubic nodal line fermion systems is studied by renormalization group theory. It is found that arbitrarily weak four-fermion interaction could drive quadratic or cubic nodal line fermion system to a new phase. According to the initial conditions and value of fermion flavor, the system may appear three kinds of instabilities. First, quadratic or cubic nodal line is split into conventional nodal lines, thus the system becomes nodal line semimetal. Second, finite excitonic gap is generated, and the system becomes an excitonic insu…
