The magnetic properties of iron-based superconductors $A$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($A=$K, Cs, and Rb), which are characterized by the V-shaped dependence of the critical temperature ($T_{\rm c}$) on pressure ($P$) were studied by means of the muon spin rotation/relaxation technique. In all three systems studied the magnetism was found to appear for pressures slightly below the critical one ($P_{\rm c}$), i.e. at pressure where $T_{\rm c}(P)$ changes the slope. Rather than competing, magnetism and superconductivity in $A$Fe$_2$As$_2$ are coexisting at $P\gtrsim P_{\rm c}$ pressure region. Our results support the scenario of a transition from one pairing state to another, with different symmetries on either side of $P_{\rm c}$.
The electronic structure and magnetism of LiFeO$_{2}$Fe$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ are investigated using the first-principle calculations. The ground state is N$\acute{e}$el antiferromagnetic (AFM) Mott insulating state for Fe1 with localized magnetism in LiFeO$_{2}$ layer and striped AFM metallic state for Fe2 with itinerant magnetism in Fe$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ layer, accompanied with a weak interlayer AFM coupling between Fe1 and Fe2 ions, resulting in a coexistence of localized and itinerant magnetism. Moreover, the layered LiFeO$_{2}$ is found to be more than an insulating block layer but responsible for enh…
A review of the magnetism in the parent compounds of the iron-based superconductors is given based on the transmission Moessbauer spectroscopy of 57Fe and 151Eu. It was found that the 3d magnetism is of the itinerant character with varying admixture of the spin-polarized covalent bonds. For the 122 compounds a longitudinal spin density wave (SDW) develops. In the case of the EuFe2As2 a divalent europium orders antiferromagnetically at much lower temperature as compared to the onset of SDW. These two magnetic systems remain almost uncoupled one to another. For the non-stoichiometric Fe(1+x)Te p…
Magnetism in the insulating BaFe$_2$Se$_3$ was examined through susceptibility, specific heat, resistivity and neutron diffraction measurements. After formation of a short-range magnetic correlation, a long-range ordering was observed below $T_{\rm N}\sim 255$ K. The transition is obscured by bulk properties. Magnetic moments ($\parallel a$) are arranged to form a Fe$_4$ ferromagnetic unit, and each Fe$_4$ stacks antiferromagnetically. This block magnetism is of the third type among magnetic structures of ferrous materials. The magnetic ordering drives unusually large distortion via magnetoela…
We report Fe K beta x-ray emission spectroscopy study of local magnetic moments in various iron based superconductors in their paramagnetic phases. Local magnetic moments are found in all samples studied: PrFeAsO, Ba(Fe,Co)2As2, LiFeAs, Fe1+x(Te,Se), and A2Fe4Se5 (A=K, Rb, and Cs). The moment size varies significantly across different families. Specifically, all iron pnictides samples have local moments of about 1 $μ_B$/Fe, while FeTe and K2Fe4Se5 families have much larger local moments of ~2$μ_B$/Fe, ~3.3$μ_B$/Fe, respectively. In addition, we find that neither carrier doping nor temperature …
We consider superconductivity in the presence of impurities in a two-band model suited for the description of iron-based superconductors. We analyze the effect of interband scattering processes on superconductivity, allowing for orbital, i.e., nonspin-magnetic but time-reversal symmetry-breaking impurities. Pair breaking in such systems is described by a nontrivial phase in an interband-scattering matrix element. We find that the transition temperature of conventional superconductors can be suppressed due to interband scattering, whereas unconventional superconductors may be unaffected. We als…
By applying density functional theory, we find strong evidence for an itinerant nature of magnetism in two families of iron pnictides. Furthermore, by employing dynamical mean field theory with continuous time quantum Monte Carlo as an impurity solver, we observe that the antiferromagnetic metal with small magnetic moment naturally arises out of coupling between unfrustrated and frustrated bands. Our results point to a possible scenario for magnetism in iron pnictides where magnetism originates from a strong instability at the momentum vector ($π$, $π$, $π$) while it is reduced by quantum fluc…
We investigated the evolution of the temperature-composition phase diagram of Fe$_{1+y}$Te upon Se substitution. In particular, the effect of Se substitution on the two-step, coupled magneto-structural transition in Fe$_{1+y}$Te single crystals is investigated. To this end, the nominal Fe excess was kept at $y$ = 0.12. For low Se concentrations, the two magneto-structural transitions displayed a tendency to merge. In spite of the high Fe-content, superconductivity emerges for Se concentrations, $x \geq$ 0.1. We present a temperature-composition phase diagram to demonstrate the interplay of str…
The interplay between magnetism and superconductivity in the newly discovered heavy-fermion superconductor CePt$_3$Si has been investigated using the zero-field $μ$SR technique. The $μ$SR data indicate that the whole muon ensemble senses spontaneous internal fields in the magnetic phase, demonstrating that magnetism occurs in the whole sample volume. This points to a microscopic coexistence between magnetism and heavy-fermion superconductivity.
The magnetic properties attributed to the hydroxide layer of Li1-xFex(OH)Fe1-ySe have been elucidated by the study of superconducting and nonsuperconducting members of this family. Both ac magnetometry and muon spin relaxation measurements of nonsuperconductors find a magnetic state existing below approximately 10 K which exhibits slow relaxation of magnetization. This magnetic state is accompanied by a low-temperature heat capacity anomaly present in both superconducting and nonsuperconducting variants suggesting that the magnetism persists into the superconducting state. The estimated value …
The electronic structure and magnetism of a new magnetic intercalation compound (Li0.8Fe0.2)OHFeSe are investigated theoretically. The electronic structure calculations predict that the Fe in the (Li,Fe)OH intercalated layer is in +2 valence state, i.e. there is electron doping to the FeSe layer, resulting in the shrinking of the Fermi surface (FS) pocket around Gamma and a strong suppression of dynamical spin susceptibility at M in comparison with the bulk FeSe compound. The ground state of the FeSe layer is a striped antiferromagnetic (SAFM) metal, while the (Li,Fe)OH layer displays a very w…
Like high Tc cuprates, the newly discovered iron based superconductors lie in close proximity to a magnetically ordered parent phase. However, while the magnetic order in parent cuprates is known to derive from a spin-spin local superexchange interaction, a plethora of experiments including neutron scattering have so far been unable to conclusively resolve whether a local moment Heisenberg description applies in parent iron based compounds, or whether magnetism arises from a collective SDW order instability. These two alternatives can in principle be distinguished by measuring the low energy m…
The electronic states of the Fe2As2 plane in iron-based superconductors are investigated on the basis of the two-dimensional 16-band d-p model which includes the Coulomb interaction on a Fe site: the intra- and inter-orbital direct terms U and U', the Hund's coupling J and the pair-transfer J'. Using the random phase approximation (RPA), we obtain the magnetic phase diagram including the stripe and the incommensurate order on the U'-J plane. We also solve the superconducting gap equation within the RPA and find that, for large J, the most favorable pairing symmetry is extended s-wave whose ord…
Motivated by recent experiments in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ {[}A. E. Böhmer \textit{et al}, to be published{]}, we analyze the type of spin-density wave (SDW) order in doped iron-pnictides and the discontinuities of the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ in the coexistence phase with SDW magnetism. By tracking the magnetic transition line $T_{N}(x)$ towards optimal doping within an itinerant fermionic model, we find a sequence of transitions from the stripe-orthorhombic ($C_{2}$) SDW order to the tetragonal ($C_{4}$) order and then back to the $C_{2}$ order. We argue that …
High-temperature superconductivity in the iron-based materials emerges from, or sometimes coexists with, their metallic or insulating parent compound states. This is surprising since these undoped states display dramatically different antiferromagnetic (AF) spin arrangements and N$\rm \acute{e}$el temperatures. Although there is general consensus that magnetic interactions are important for superconductivity, much is still unknown concerning the microscopic origin of the magnetic states. In this review, progress in this area is summarized, focusing on recent experimental and theoretical result…
An optical analysis reveals that the electronic correlations in the `parent' compounds of the iron pnictide superconductors are sufficiently strong to significantly impede the mobility of the electrons.
A new iron pnictide LiFeP superconductor was found. The compound crystallizes into a Cu2Sb structure containing an FeP layer showing superconductivity with maximum Tc of 6K. This is the first 111 type iron pnictide superconductor containing no arsenic. The new superconductor is featured with itinerant behavior at normal state that could helpful to understand the novel superconducting mechanism of iron pnictide compounds.
Iron chalcogenides display a rich variety of electronic orders in their phase diagram. A particularly enigmatic case is FeTe, a metal which possesses co-existing hole and electron Fermi surfaces as in the iron pnictides but has a distinct ($π$/2,$π/2$) bicollinear antiferromagnetic order in the Fe square lattice. While local-moment physics has been recognized as essential for understanding the electronic order, it has been a long-standing challenge to understand how the bicollinear antiferromagnetic ground state emerges in a proper quantum spin model. We show here that a bilinear-biquadratic s…
We propose a unified description of cuprate and iron-based superconductivity. Consistency with magnetic structure inferred from neutron scattering implies significant constraints on the symmetry of the pairing gap for the iron-based superconductors. We find that this unification requires the orbital pairing formfactors for the iron arsenides to differ fundamentally from those for cuprates at the microscopic level.
The magnetic properties of various iron pnictides are investigated using first-principles pseudopotential calculations. We consider three different families, LaFePnO, BaFe$_2$Pn$_2$, and LiFePn with Pn=As and Sb, and find that the Fe local spin moment and the stability of the stripe-type antiferromagnetic phase increases from As to Sb for all of the three families, with a partial gap formed at the Fermi energy. In the meanwhile, the Fermi-surface nesting is found to be enhanced from Pn=As to Sb for LaFePnO, but not for BaFe$_2$Pn$_2$ and LiFePn. These results indicate that it is not the Fermi …
It is shown that a generic form of an antiferromagnetic wave function opens strong electron-phonon coupling channels in the iron-based superconductors. In the nonmagnetic state these channels exist locally on a single iron atom, but are canceled out between the two iron atoms in the primitive unit cell. Our findings are based on symmetry and the presence of an xz/yz Fermi surface near the M point and thus should be relevant for the known iron-based pnictide or chalcogenide superconductors.
In this review, the authors present a summary of experimental reports on newly discovered iron-based superconductors as they were known at the end of 2008. At the same time, this paper is intended to be useful for experimenters to know the current status of these superconductors. The authors introduce experimental results that reveal basic physical properties in the normal and superconducting states. The similarities and differences between iron-pnictide superconductors and other unconventional superconductors are also discussed.
Here we show that the 2.80(8) μB/Fe block antiferromagnetic order of BaFe2Se3 transforms into stripe antiferromagnetic order in KFe2Se3 with a decrease in moment to 2.1(1) μB/Fe. This reduction is larger than expected from the change in electron count from Ba$^{2+}$ to K$^{+}$, and occurs with the loss of the displacements of Fe atoms from ideal positions in the ladders, as found by neutron pair distribution function analysis. Intermediate compositions remain insulating, and magnetic susceptibility measurements show a suppression of magnetic order and probable formation of a spin-glass. Togeth…
The second class of high-temperature superconductors (HTSCs), iron-based pnictides and chalcogenides, necessarily contain Fe$_2$$X_2$ ("$X$" refers to a pnictogen or a chalcogen element) layers, just like the first class of HTSCs which possess the essential CuO$_2$ sheets. So far, dozens of iron-based HTSCs, classified into nine groups, have been discovered. In this article, the crystal-chemistry aspects of the known iron-based superconductors are reviewed and summarized by employing "hard and soft acids and bases (HSAB)" concept. Based on these understandings, we propose an alternative route …
The band structure of iron-based superconductors gives rise to yet another scenario for the appearance of Dirac fermions. A viewpoint on "Observation of Dirac cone electronic dispersion in BaFe2As2" (Richard et.al., PRL 104, 137001 (2010)).
We have made a phase-sensitive measurement on the corner junction of the iron-based superconductor BaFe1.8Co0.2As2, and observed the typical Fraunhofer-like diffraction pattern. The result suggests that there is no phase shift between the a-c face and b-c face of a crystal, which indicates that the superconducting wavefunction of the iron based superconductor is different from that of a cuprate superconductor.
We study a two-orbital spin model to describe (pi,0) stripe antiferromagnetism in the iron pnictides. The "double-spin" model has an on-site Hunds's coupling and inter-site interactions extending to second neighbors (inter- and intra-orbital) on the square lattice. Using a variational method based on a cluster decomposition, we optimize wave functions with up to 8 cluster sites (up to 2^16 variational parameters). We focus on the anomalously small ordered moments in the stripe state of the pnictides. To account for it, and large variations among different compounds, we show that the second-nei…
Magnetism and nematic order are the two non-superconducting orders observed in iron-based superconductors. To elucidate the interplay between them and ultimately unveil the pairing mechanism, several models have been investigated. In models with quenched orbital degrees of freedom, magnetic fluctuations promote stripe magnetism which induces orbital order. In models with quenched spin degrees of freedom, charge fluctuations promote spontaneous orbital order which induces stripe magnetism. Here we develop an unbiased approach, in which we treat magnetic and orbital fluctuations on equal footing…
We focus on a broad class of tetragonal itinerant systems sharing a tendency towards the spontaneous formation of incommensurate magnetism with ordering wavevectors $\mathbf{Q}_{1,2}=(π-δ,0)/(0,π-δ)$ or $\mathbf{Q}_{1,2}=(π,δ)/(-δ,π)$. Employing a Landau approach, we obtain the generic magnetic phase diagram and identify the leading instabilities near the paramagnetic-magnetic transition. Nine distinct magnetic phases exist that either preserve or violate the assumed $C_4$-symmetry of the paramagnetic phase. These are single- and double-$\mathbf{Q}$ phases consisting of magnetic stripes, helic…
Specific heat measurements have been successfully used to probe unconventional superconducting phases in one-band heavy-fermion and organic superconductors. We extend the method to study successive phase transitions in multi-band materials such as iron based superconductors. The signatures are multiple peaks in the specific heat, at low temperatures and high magnetic field, which can lead the experimental verification of unconventional superconducting states with non-zero total momentum.
High-transition temperature (high-$T_c$) superconductivity in the iron pnictides/chalcogenides emerges from the suppression of the static antiferromagnetic order in their parent compounds, similar to copper oxides superconductors. This raises a fundamental question concerning the role of magnetism in the superconductivity of these materials. Neutron scattering, a powerful probe to study the magnetic order and spin dynamics, plays an essential role in determining the relationship between magnetism and superconductivity in high-$T_c$ superconductors. The rapid development of modern neutron time-…
We report the first variational Monte Carlo (VMC) study of the iron-based superconductors. We use realistic band structures, and the ordering instabilities/variational ansatzs are suggested by previous functional renormalization group calculations. We examine antiferromagnetism, superconducting pairing, normal state fermi surface distortion, and orbital order in the antiferromagnetic state.
We report anistropy in superconducting and normal state of NiBi3 single crystals with Tc = 4.06 K. The magnetoresistance results indicate the absence of scattering usually associated with ferromagnetic metals, suggesting the absence of bulk long range magnetic order below 300 K. However, the electron spin resonance results demonstrate that ferromagnetism fluctuations exist on the surface of the crystal below 150K.
Within the framework of density functional theory we investigate the nature of magnetism in various families of Fe-based superconductors. (i) We show that magnetization of stripe-type antiferromagnetic order always becomes stronger when As is substituted by Sb in LaOFeAs, BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and LiFeAs. By calculating Pauli susceptibilities, we attribute the magnetization increase obtained after replacing As by Sb to the enhancement of an instability at $(π,π)$. This points to a strong connection between Fermi surface nesting and magnetism, which supports the theory of the itinerant nature of magne…
We show that the strong hybridization between the iron 3d and the arsenic 4p orbitals, in the newly discovered iron-based high-T$_{c}$ superconductors, leads to an explanation of certain experimental observations that are presently not well understood. The existence of a lattice distortion, the smallness of the Fe magnetic moment in the undoped systems, and the suppression of both the lattice distortion and the magnetic order upon doping with fluorine, are all shown to result from this hybridization.
The layered iron superconductors are discussed using electronic structure calculations. The four families of compounds discovered so far, including Fe(Se,Te) have closely related electronic structures. The Fermi surface consists of disconnected hole and electron cylinders and additional hole sections that depend on the specific material. This places the materials in proximity to itinerant magnetism, both due to the high density of states and due to nesting. Comparison of density functional results and experiment provides strong evidence for itinerant spin fluctuations, which are discussed in r…
The magnetic excitations of the iron pnictides are explained within a degenerate double-exchange model. The local-moment spins are coupled by superexchanges $J_1$ and $J_2$ between nearest and next-nearest neighbors, respectively, and interact with the itinerant electrons of the degenerate $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals via a ferromagnetic Hund exchange. The latter stabilizes $(π,0)$ stripe antiferromagnetism due to emergent ferro-orbital order and the resulting kinetic energy gain by hopping preferably along the ferromagnetic spin direction. Taking the quantum nature of the spins into account…
We propose a modified Josephson corner-junction experiment which can test whether the order parameter in the iron pnictides changes sign between the electron and hole pockets of the Fermi surface.
We present the first infrared and optical study in the normal state of ab-plane oriented single crystals of the iron-oxypnictide superconductor LaFePO. We find that this material is a low carrier density metal with a moderate level of correlations and exhibits signatures of electron-boson coupling. The data is consistent with the presence of coherent quasiparticles in LaFePO.
Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has made tremendous progress in the study and understanding of both classical and unconventional superconductors. This has motivated a rapidly growing effort to apply the same techniques to the iron-based high-Tc superconductors since their discovery in 2008. Five years have brought exciting advances in imaging and spectroscopic investigation of this new class of materials. In this review, we focus on several recent STM contributions to the identification of the gap symmetry and pairing glue. We highlight the unique capabilities and challenges still ahead fo…
The varying metallic antiferromagnetic correlations observed in iron-based superconductors are unified in a model consisting of both itinerant electrons and localized spins. The decisive factor is found to be the sensitive competition between the superexchange antiferromagnetism and the orbital-degenerate double-exchange ferromagnetism. Our results reveal the crucial role of Hund's rule coupling for the strongly correlated nature of the system and suggest that the iron-based superconductors are closer kin to manganites than cuprates in terms of their diverse magnetism and incoherent normal-sta…
Electronic correlations were long suggested not only to be responsible for the complexity of many novel materials, but also to form essential prerequisites for their intriguing properties. Electronic behavior of iron-based superconductors is far from conventional, while the reason for that is not yet understood. Here we present a combined study of the electronic spectrum in the iron-based superconductor FeSe by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). Both methods in unison reveal strong deviations of the spectrum from single-electron a…
We examine the relevance of several major material-dependent parameters to the magnetic softness in iron-base superconductors by first-principles electronic structure analysis of their parent compounds. The results are explained in the spin-fermion model where localized spins and orbitally degenerate itinerant electrons coexist and are coupled by Hund's rule coupling. We found that the difference in the strength of the Hund's rule coupling term is the major material-dependent microscopic parameter for determining the ground-state spin pattern. The magnetic softness in iron-based superconductor…
Iron-base superconductors exhibits features of systems where the Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase, a superconducting state with non-zero total momentum of Cooper pairs, is actively sought. Experimental and theoretical evidence points strongly to the FFLO phase in these materials above the Pauli limit. In this article we discuss the ground state of iron-base superconductors near the critical magnetic field and the full $h-T$ phase diagram for pnictides in case of intra-band pairing, in a three-band model with $s_{\pm}$ symmetry.
Magnetic susceptibility, M-H plot, magnetoresistance and thermoelectric power of the RuSr2Eu1.5Ce0.5Cu2O10 superconductor are measured. Values of the magnetic transition temperature Tmag, superconductivity transition temperature Tc, upper critical field Hc2, chemical potential mu, and energy width for electric conduction W(sigma) are obtained from these measurements. It has been found that Tmag = 140 K, Tc = 25 K (33 K) from susceptibility (magnetoresistance) measurements, Hc2 (0) > 32 T, mu = 8 meV, and W(sigma) = 58.5 meV. These values are compared with other ruthenate superconductors, and r…
Nematicity and magnetism are two key features in Fe-based superconductors, and their interplay is one of the most important unsolved problems. In FeSe, the magnetic order is absent below the structural transition temperature $T_{str}=90$K, in stark contrast that the magnetism emerges slightly below $T_{str}$ in other families. To understand such amazing material dependence, we investigate the spin-fluctuation-mediated orbital order ($n_{xz}\neq n_{yz}$) by focusing on the orbital-spin interplay driven by the strong-coupling effect, called the vertex correction. This orbital-spin interplay is v…
Alkali-doped iron selenide is the latest member of high Tc superconductor family, and its peculiar characters have immediately attracted extensive attention. We prepared high-quality potassium-doped iron selenide (KxFe2-ySe2) thin films by molecular beam epitaxy and unambiguously demonstrated the existence of phase separation, which is currently under debate, in this material using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. The stoichiometric superconducting phase KFe2Se2 contains no iron vacancies, while the insulating phase has a \surd5\times\surd5 vacancy order. The iron vacancies are …
The low temperature variation of the London penetration depth for a number of iron-pnictide and iron-chalcogenide superconductors is nearly quadratic, $Δλ(T) = βT^n$ with $n\approx 2$. The coefficient in this dependence shows a robust scaling, $β\propto 1/T_c^3$ across different families of these materials. We associate the scaling with a strong pair-breaking. The same mechanism have recently been suggested to explain the scalings of the specific heat jump, $ΔC \propto T_c^3$, and of the slopes of the upper critical field, $dH_{c2}/dT\propto T_c$ in these materials. This suggests that thermody…
We briefly review the recently constructed two orbital microscopic model for iron-based superconductors based on $S_4$ symmetry (PRX 2 021009(2012)). With this faithful representation of the kinematics of the tri-layer FeAs or FeSe structure, the model provides answers and physical pictures to fundamental questions related to the robustness of superconductivity and pairing symmetry, unifies different families of iron-based superconductors, casts new insight into the connections to the other high $T_c$ superconductors, cuprates, and reveals why an s-wave pairing can be stabilized by repulsive i…
Quasiparticle excitations provide viable information on the physics of unconventional superconductors. Higgs and Leggett modes are some of the classic examples. Another important bosonic excitation is the spin exciton originating from the sign-changing superconducting gap structure. Here we report a direct observation of the temperature-dependent spin exciton in the Andreev spectra of iron-based superconductors. Combined with the other experimental evidence, our observation confirms the extended $s$-wave ($s_\pm$) order parameter symmetry and indirectly proves the spin-fluctuation mechanism of…
Under the assumption that superconducting pairing is driven by local d-p hybridization, we show that the superconducting state in iron-based superconductors is classified as an odd parity s-wave spin-singlet pairing state in a single trilayer FeAs/Se, the building block of the materials. In a low energy effective model with only d-orbitals in an iron square bipartite lattice, the superconducting order parameter in this state is a combination of a s-wave normal pairing between two sublattices and a s-wave $η$-pairing within the sublattices. Parity conservation was violated in proposed supercond…
Iron-based superconducting layered compounds have the second highest transition temperature after cuprate superconductors. Their discovery is a milestone in the history of high-temperature superconductivity and will have profound implications for high-temperature superconducting mechanism as well as industrial applications. Raman scattering has been extensively applied to correlated electron systems including the new superconductors due to its unique ability to probe multiple primary excitations and their coupling. In this review, we will give a brief summary of the existing Raman experiments …
Using nuclear quadrupole resonance, the phase diagram of 1111 $R$FeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ ($R$$=$La, Ce, Sm) iron pnictides is constructed as a function of the local charge distribution in the paramagnetic state, which features low-doping-like (LD-like) and high-doping-like (HD-like) regions. Compounds based on magnetic rare earths (Ce, Sm) display a unified behavior, and comparison with La-based compounds reveals the detrimental role of static iron $3d$ magnetism on superconductivity, as well as a qualitatively different evolution of the latter at high doping. It is found that the LD-like regions f…
The influence of static magnetic correlations on the temperature-dependent superfluid density ρ_s(T) is calculated for d-wave superconductors. In self-consistent calculations, itinerant holes form incommensurate spin density waves (SDW) which coexist with superconductivity. In the clean limit, the density of states is gapped, and ρ_s(T << T_c) is exponentially activated. In inhomogeneously-doped cases, the SDW are disordered and both the density of states and ρ_s(T) obtain forms indistinguishable from those in dirty but pure d-wave superconductors, in accordance with experiments. We conclude t…
Among the mysteries surrounding unconventional, strongly correlated superconductors is the possibility of spatial variations in their superfluid density. We use atomic-resolution Josephson scanning tunneling microscopy to reveal a strongly inhomogeneous superfluid in the iron-based superconductor FeTe0.55Se0.45. By simultaneously measuring the topographic and electronic properties, we find that this inhomogeneity in the superfluid density is not caused by structural disorder or strong inter-pocket scattering, and does not correlate with variations in Cooper pair-breaking gap. Instead, we see a…
We have explored a new mechanism for switching magnetism and superconductivity in a magnetically frustrated iron-based superconductor using spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SPSTM). Our SPSTM study on single crystal Sr$_2$VO$_3$FeAs shows that a spin-polarized tunneling current can switch the Fe-layer magnetism into a non-trivial $C_4$ (2$\times$2) order, not achievable by thermal excitation with unpolarized current. Our tunneling spectroscopy study shows that the induced $C_4$ (2$\times$2) order has characteristics of plaquette antiferromagnetic order in Fe layer and strongly supp…
A microscopic model for the FeAs plane in the newly discovered Iron-based superconductors is proposed with the emphasis on the role of the orbital degeneracy between the Fe $3d_{xz}$ and $3d_{yz}$ orbital in the crystal field environment. The model predicts commensurate antiferromagnetic ordered ground state for the parent compounds and a d-wave superconducting ground state at finite doping. Inter-orbital couplings plays an interesting role in enhancing both orders. Correlated variational wave functions are proposed for both ordered phases.
We have performed x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements on the iron-based superconductor Sr$_2$VFeAsO$_{3-δ}$ to study the origin of weak ferromagnetism (WFM) reported for this compound. While Fe 3$d$ electrons show a magnetic response similar to the other iron pnictides, signals from V 3$d$ electrons remain finite at zero magnetic field and may be responsible for the WFM.
In this paper we study an effective model for the normal state of iron-based superconductors. It has separate, but interacting itinerant and localized degrees of freedom, originating from the d_xz and d_yz, and from d_xy iron orbitals respectively. At low temperatures, below a mean-field phase transition, these different states condense together in an excitonic order parameter. We show that at even lower temperature, after another phase transition, this ordered state can spontaneously break the C_4 lattice symmetry and become nematic. We propose this mechanism as an explanation of the tendency…
Parity is a fundamental quantum number to classify a state of matter. Materials rarely possess ground states with odd parity. We show that the superconducting state in iron-based superconductors is classified as an odd parity s-wave spin-singlet pairing state in a single trilayer FeAs/Se, the building block of the materials. In a low energy effective model constructed on the Fe square bipartite lattice, the superconducting order parameter in this state is a combination of a s-wave normal pairing between two sublattices and a s-wave $η$-pairing within the sublattices. Parity conservation was vi…
