Localized coherent structures can form in externally-driven dispersive optical cavities with a Kerr-type nonlinearity. Such systems are described by the Lugiato-Lefever equation, which supports a large variety of dynamical solutions. Here, we review our current knowledge on the formation, stability and bifurcation structure of localized structures in the one-dimensional Lugiato-Lefever equation. We do so by focusing on two main regimes of operation: anomalous and normal second-order dispersion. In the anomalous regime, localized patterns are organized in a homoclinic snaking scenario, which is eventually destroyed, leading to a foliated snaking bifurcation structure. In the normal regime, however, localized structures undergo a different type of bifurcation structure, known as collapsed snaking.
We study the formation of localized patterns arising in doubly resonant dispersive optical parametric oscillators. They form through the locking of fronts connecting a continuous-wave and a Turing pattern state. This type of localized pattern can be seen as a slug of the pattern embedded in a homogeneous surrounding. They are organized in terms of a homoclinic snaking bifurcation structure, which is preserved under the modification of the control parameter of the system. We show that, in the presence of phase mismatch, localized patterns can undergo oscillatory instabilities which make them br…
New resonant emission of dispersive waves by oscillating solitary structures is considered analytically and numerically. The resonance condition for the radiation is derived and it is demonstrated that the predicted resonances match the spectral lines observed in numerical simulations perfectly. The complex recoil of the radiation on the soliton dynamics is discussed.
We theoretically investigate the dynamics, bifurcation structure and stability of quadratic dark localized dissipative states arising in cavity enhanced second-harmonic generation. These states, formed through the locking of plane front waves, undergo collapsed homoclinic snaking and may exhibit oscillatory dynamics.
We investigate the spatio-temporal dynamics of a ring cavity filled with a non-instantaneous Kerr medium and driven by a coherent injected beam. We show the existence of a stable mixed-mode solution that can be either extended or localized in space. The mixed-mode solutions are obtained in a regime where Turing instability (often called modulational instability) interacts with self-pulsing phenomenon (Andronov-Hopf bifurcation). We numerically describe the transition from stationary inhomogeneous solutions to a branch of mixed-mode solutions. We characterize this transition by constructing the…
We report symmetry-breaking and restoring bifurcations of solitons in a fractional Schrödinger equation with the cubic or cubic-quintic (CQ) nonlinearity and a parity-time (PT)-symmetric potential, which may be realized in optical cavities. Solitons are destabilized at the bifurcation point, and, in the case of the CQ nonlinearity, the stability is restored by an inverse bifurcation. Two mutually-conjugate branches of ghost states (GSs), with complex propagation constants, are created by the bifurcation, solely in the case of the fractional diffraction. While GSs are not true solutions, direct…
The origin, stability and bifurcation structure of different types of bright localized structures described by the Lugiato-Lefever equation is studied. This mean field model describes the nonlinear dynamics of light circulating in fiber cavities and microresonators. In the case of anomalous group velocity dispersion and low values of the intracavity phase detuning these bright states are organized in a homoclinic snaking bifurcation structure. We describe how this bifurcation structure is destroyed when the detuning is increased across a critical value, and determine how a new bifurcation stru…
We develop {\em the first analytical theory of multikinks} for strongly {\em dispersive nonlinear systems}, considering the examples of the weakly discrete sine-Gordon model and the generalized Frenkel-Kontorova model with a piecewise parabolic potential. We reveal that there are no $2π$-kinks for this model, but there exist {\em discrete sets} of $2πN$-kinks for all N>1. We also show their bifurcation structure in driven damped systems.
Discrete bright breathers are well known phenomena. They are localized excitations that consist of a few excited oscillators in a lattice and the rest of them having very small amplitude or none. In this paper we are interested in the opposite kind of localization, or discrete dark breathers, where most of the oscillators are excited and one or a few units of them have very small amplitude. We investigate using band analysis, Klein--Gordon lattices at frequencies not close to the linear ones. Dark breathers at low coupling are shown to be stable for Klein--Gordon chains with soft on--site pote…
We report the existence of stable dissipative light bullets in Kerr cavities. These three-dimensional (3D) localized structures consist of either an isolated light bullet (LB), or could occur in clusters forming well-defined 3D patterns. They can be seen as stationary states in the reference frame moving with the group velocity of light within the cavity. The number of LBs and their distribution in 3D settings are determined by the initial conditions while their maximum peak power remains constant for a fixed value of the system parameters. Their bifurcation diagram allows us to explain this p…
A new type of transverse instability in dispersively nonlinear optical cavities, called the optical whistle, is discussed. This instability occurs in the mean-field, soliton forming limit when the cavity is driven with a finite-width Gaussian beam, and gives rise to oscillation, period doubling, and chaos. It is also seen that bistability is strongly affected due to the oscillation within the upper transmission branch. The phenomenon is interpreted as a mode-mismatch in the soliton formation process and is believed to have broad applicability.
We introduce the simplest one-dimensional model of a dispersive optical medium with saturable dissipative nonlinearity and filtering (dispersive loss) which gives rise to stable solitary pulses (autosolitons). In the particular case when the dispersive loss is absent, the same model may also be interpreted as describing a stationary field in a planar optical waveguide with uniformly distributed saturable gain and absorption. In a certain region of the model's parameter space, two coexisting solitary-pulse solutions are found numerically, one of which may be stable. Solving the corresponding li…
We present analytic threshold formulae applicable to both dispersive (time-domain) and diffractive (pattern-forming) instabilities in Fabry-Perot Kerr cavities of arbitrary finesse. We do so by extending the gain-circle technique, recently developed for counter-propagating fields in single-mirror-feedback systems, to allow for an input mirror. In time-domain counter-propagating systems walk-off effects are known to suppress cross-phase modulation contributions to dispersive instabilities. Applying the gain-circle approach with appropriately-adjusted cross-phase couplings extends previous resul…
We study pattern formation associated with the polarization degree of freedom of the electric field amplitude in a mean field model describing a nonlinear Kerr medium close to a two-photon resonance, placed inside a ring cavity with flat mirrors and driven by a coherent $\hat x$-polarized plane-wave field. In the self-focusing case, for negative detunings the pattern arises naturally from a codimension two bifurcation. For a critical value of the field intensity there are two wave numbers that become unstable simultaneously, corresponding to two Turing-like instabilities. Considered alone, one…
We demonstrate neuron-like spiking dynamics in the asymmetrically driven dissipative photonic Bose-Hubbard dimmer model which describes two coupled nonlinear passive Kerr cavities. Spiking dynamics appear due to the excitable nature of the system. In this context, excitable excursions in the phase space correspond to spikes in the temporal evolution of the field variables. In our case, excitability is mediated by the destruction of an oscillatory state in a global homoclinic bifurcation. In this type of excitability (known as type-I) the period of the oscillatory state diverges when approachin…
We theoretically investigate the dynamics, bifurcation structure and stability of localized states in Kerr cavities driven at the pure fourth-order dispersion point. Both the normal and anomalous group velocity dispersion regimes are analysed, highlighting the main differences with the standard second order dispersion case. In the anomalous regime, single and multi-peak localised states exist and are stable over a much wider region of the parameter space. In the normal dispersion regime, stable narrow bright solitons exist. Some of our findings can be understood by a new scenario reported here…

We report the existence of vectorial dark dissipative solitons in optical cavities subject to a coherently injected beam. We assume that the resonator is operating in a normal dispersion regime far from any modulational instability. We show that the vectorial front locking mechanism allows for the stabilisation of dark dissipative structures. These structures differ by their temporal duration and their state of polarization. We characterize them by constructing their heteroclinic snaking bifurcation diagram showing evidence of multistability within a finite range of the control parameter.
The realization of spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) requires a system that exhibits a near perfect symmetry. SSB manifests itself through a pitchfork bifurcation, but that bifurcation is fragile, and perturbed by any asymmetry or imperfections. Consequently, exploiting SSB for real-world applications is challenging and often requires cumbersome stabilization techniques. Here, we reveal a novel method that automatically leads to symmetric conditions, and demonstrate its practical application in coherently-driven, two-mode, passive Kerr resonators. More specifically, we show that introducing …
