Reading Comprehension (RC) is a task of answering a question from a given passage or a set of passages. In the case of multiple passages, the task is to find the best possible answer to the question. Recent trials and experiments in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP) have proved that machines can be provided with the ability to not only process the text in the passage and understand its meaning to answer the question from the passage, but also can surpass the Human Performance on many datasets such as Standford's Question Answering Dataset (SQuAD). This paper presents a study on Re…

Although the curse of multilinguality significantly restricts the language abilities of multilingual models in monolingual settings, researchers now still have to rely on multilingual models to develop state-of-the-art systems in Vietnamese Machine Reading Comprehension. This difficulty in researching is because of the limited number of high-quality works in developing Vietnamese language models. In order to encourage more work in this research field, we present a comprehensive analysis of language weaknesses and strengths of current Vietnamese monolingual models using the downstream task of M…

Understanding narratives requires reading between the lines, which in turn, requires interpreting the likely causes and effects of events, even when they are not mentioned explicitly. In this paper, we introduce Cosmos QA, a large-scale dataset of 35,600 problems that require commonsense-based reading comprehension, formulated as multiple-choice questions. In stark contrast to most existing reading comprehension datasets where the questions focus on factual and literal understanding of the context paragraph, our dataset focuses on reading between the lines over a diverse collection of people's…
In this paper, we investigate the tendency of end-to-end neural Machine Reading Comprehension (MRC) models to match shallow patterns rather than perform inference-oriented reasoning on RC benchmarks. We aim to test the ability of these systems to answer questions which focus on referential inference. We propose ParallelQA, a strategy to formulate such questions using parallel passages. We also demonstrate that existing neural models fail to generalize well to this setting.

Span-extraction reading comprehension models have made tremendous advances enabled by the availability of large-scale, high-quality training datasets. Despite such rapid progress and widespread application, extractive reading comprehension datasets in languages other than English remain scarce, and creating such a sufficient amount of training data for each language is costly and even impossible. An alternative to creating large-scale high-quality monolingual span-extraction training datasets is to develop multilingual modeling approaches and systems which can transfer to the target language w…
Existing question answering systems can only predict answers without explicit reasoning processes, which hinder their explainability and make us overestimate their ability of understanding and reasoning over natural language. In this work, we propose a novel task of reading comprehension, in which a model is required to provide final answers and reasoning processes. To this end, we introduce a formalism for reasoning over unstructured text, namely Text Reasoning Meaning Representation (TRMR). TRMR consists of three phrases, which is expressive enough to characterize the reasoning process to an…
Multiple-choice machine reading comprehension is difficult task as its required machines to select the correct option from a set of candidate or possible options using the given passage and question.Reading Comprehension with Multiple Choice Questions task, required a human (or machine) to read a given passage, question pair and select the best one option from n given options. There are two different ways to select the correct answer from the given passage. Either by selecting the best match answer to by eliminating the worst match answer. Here we proposed GenNet model, a neural network-based m…

Numerical reasoning based machine reading comprehension is a task that involves reading comprehension along with using arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, sorting, and counting. The DROP benchmark (Dua et al., 2019) is a recent dataset that has inspired the design of NLP models aimed at solving this task. The current standings of these models in the DROP leaderboard, over standard metrics, suggest that the models have achieved near-human performance. However, does this mean that these models have learned to reason? In this paper, we present a controlled study on some of the to…
This paper presents BiPaR, a bilingual parallel novel-style machine reading comprehension (MRC) dataset, developed to support multilingual and cross-lingual reading comprehension. The biggest difference between BiPaR and existing reading comprehension datasets is that each triple (Passage, Question, Answer) in BiPaR is written parallelly in two languages. We collect 3,667 bilingual parallel paragraphs from Chinese and English novels, from which we construct 14,668 parallel question-answer pairs via crowdsourced workers following a strict quality control procedure. We analyze BiPaR in depth and…
In this work, we analyze how human gaze during reading comprehension is conditioned on the given reading comprehension question, and whether this signal can be beneficial for machine reading comprehension. To this end, we collect a new eye-tracking dataset with a large number of participants engaging in a multiple choice reading comprehension task. Our analysis of this data reveals increased fixation times over parts of the text that are most relevant for answering the question. Motivated by this finding, we propose making automated reading comprehension more human-like by mimicking human info…

Reading is integral to everyday life, and yet learning to read is a struggle for many young learners. During lessons, teachers can use comprehension questions to increase engagement, test reading skills, and improve retention. Historically such questions were written by skilled teachers, but recently language models have been used to generate comprehension questions. However, many existing Question Generation (QG) systems focus on generating literal questions from the text, and have no way to control the type of the generated question. In this paper, we study QG for reading comprehension where…
Although existing machine reading comprehension models are making rapid progress on many datasets, they are far from robust. In this paper, we propose an understanding-oriented machine reading comprehension model to address three kinds of robustness issues, which are over sensitivity, over stability and generalization. Specifically, we first use a natural language inference module to help the model understand the accurate semantic meanings of input questions so as to address the issues of over sensitivity and over stability. Then in the machine reading comprehension module, we propose a memory…
In recent years, low-resource Machine Reading Comprehension (MRC) has made significant progress, with models getting remarkable performance on various language datasets. SemEval task 4 aims to find a proper option from multiple candidates to resolve the task of machine reading comprehension. Most existing approaches propose to concat question and option together to form a context-aware model. However, we argue that straightforward concatenation can only provide a coarse-grained context for the MRC task, ignoring the specific positions of the option relative to the question. In this paper, we propose a novel MRC model by filling options into the question to produce a fine-grained context (defined as summary) which can better reveal the relationship between opti…
Most existing multi-document machine reading comprehension models mainly focus on understanding the interactions between the input question and documents, but ignore following two kinds of understandings. First, to understand the semantic meaning of words in the input question and documents from the perspective of each other. Second, to understand the supporting cues for a correct answer from the perspective of intra-document and inter-documents. Ignoring these two kinds of important understandings would make the models oversee some important information that may be helpful for inding correct …

Achieving human-level performance on some of Machine Reading Comprehension (MRC) datasets is no longer challenging with the help of powerful Pre-trained Language Models (PLMs). However, it is necessary to provide both answer prediction and its explanation to further improve the MRC system's reliability, especially for real-life applications. In this paper, we propose a new benchmark called ExpMRC for evaluating the explainability of the MRC systems. ExpMRC contains four subsets, including SQuAD, CMRC 2018, RACE$^+$, and C$^3$ with additional annotations of the answer's evidence. The MRC system…

Constructing a machine that understands human language is one of the most elusive and long-standing challenges in artificial intelligence. This thesis addresses this challenge through studies of reading comprehension with a focus on understanding entities and their relationships. More specifically, we focus on question answering tasks designed to measure reading comprehension. We focus on entities and relations because they are typically used to represent the semantics of natural language.
Current state-of-the-art reading comprehension models rely heavily on recurrent neural networks. We explored an entirely different approach to question answering: a convolutional model. By their nature, these convolutional models are fast to train and capture local dependencies well, though they can struggle with longer-range dependencies and thus require augmentation to achieve comparable performance to RNN-based models. We conducted over two dozen controlled experiments with convolutional models and various kernel/attention/regularization schemes to determine the precise performance gains of…

Multi-choice Machine Reading Comprehension (MRC) as a challenge requires models to select the most appropriate answer from a set of candidates with a given passage and question. Most of the existing researches focus on the modeling of specific tasks or complex networks, without explicitly referring to relevant and credible external knowledge sources, which are supposed to greatly make up for the deficiency of the given passage. Thus we propose a novel reference-based knowledge enhancement model called Reference Knowledgeable Network (RekNet), which simulates human reading strategies to refine …

Multilingual pre-trained models could leverage the training data from a rich source language (such as English) to improve performance on low resource languages. However, the transfer quality for multilingual Machine Reading Comprehension (MRC) is significantly worse than sentence classification tasks mainly due to the requirement of MRC to detect the word level answer boundary. In this paper, we propose two auxiliary tasks in the fine-tuning stage to create additional phrase boundary supervision: (1) A mixed MRC task, which translates the question or passage to other languages and builds cross…

While most successful approaches for machine reading comprehension rely on single training objective, it is assumed that the encoder layer can learn great representation through the loss function we define in the predict layer, which is cross entropy in most of time, in the case that we first use neural networks to encode the question and paragraph, then directly fuse the encoding result of them. However, due to the distantly loss backpropagating in reading comprehension, the encoder layer cannot learn effectively and be directly supervised. Thus, the encoder layer can not learn the representa…

Furthermore, we assess the generalizability of our model by analyzing its differences to human inference,
Many recent papers address reading comprehension, where examples consist of (question, passage, answer) tuples. Presumably, a model must combine information from both questions and passages to predict corresponding answers. However, despite intense interest in the topic, with hundreds of published papers vying for leaderboard dominance, basic questions about the difficulty of many popular benchmarks remain unanswered. In this paper, we establish sensible baselines for the bAbI, SQuAD, CBT, CNN, and Who-did-What datasets, finding that question- and passage-only models often perform surprisingly…

Understanding how events are semantically related to each other is the essence of reading comprehension. Recent event-centric reading comprehension datasets focus mostly on event arguments or temporal relations. While these tasks partially evaluate machines' ability of narrative understanding, human-like reading comprehension requires the capability to process event-based information beyond arguments and temporal reasoning. For example, to understand causality between events, we need to infer motivation or purpose; to establish event hierarchy, we need to understand the composition of events. …
