We study the gravitationally-dominated, accretion-driven evolution of a prestellar core. In our model, as the core's density increases, it remains immersed in a constant-density environment and so it accretes from this environment, increasing its mass and reducing its Jeans length. Assuming a power-law density profile $ρ\propto r^{-p}$, we compute the rate of change of the slope $p$, and show that the value $p=2$ is stationary, and furthermore, an attractor. The radial profile of the Jeans length scales as $r^{p/2}$, implying that, for $p<2$, there is a radius below which the region is smaller than its Jeans length, thus appearing gravitationally stable and in need of pressure confinement, while, in reality, it is part of a larger-scale collapse and is undergoing compression by the infalling material. In this region, the infall speed decreases towards the center, eventually becoming subsonic, thus appearing "coherent", without the need for turbulence dissipation. We present a compilation of observational determinations of density profiles in dense cores and show that the distribution of their slopes peaks at $p \sim 1.7$--1.9, supporting the notion that the profile steepens over time. Finally, we discuss the case of magnetic support in a core in which the field scales as $B \propto ρ^β$. For the expected value of $β= 2/3$, this implies that the mass to magnetic flux ratio also decreases towards the central parts of the cores, making them appear magnetically supported, while in reality they may be part of larger collapsing supercritical region. We conclude that local signatures of either thermal or magnetic support are not conclusive evidence of stability, that the gravitational instability of a region must be established at the large scales, and that the prestellar stage of collapse is dynamic rather than quasistatic.
Sun-like stars form from the contraction of cold and dense interstellar clouds. How the collapse proceeds and what are the main physical processes driving it, however, is still under debate and a final consensus on the timescale of the process has not been reached. Does this contraction proceed slowly, sustained by strong magnetic fields and ambipolar diffusion, or is it driven by fast collapse with gravity dominating the entire process? One way to answer this question is to measure the age of prestellar cores through statistical methods based on observations or via reliable chemical chronomet…
Stability of filaments in star-forming clouds and the formation of prestellar cores in them
We develop analytic approximations to the density evolution of prestellar cores, based on the results of hydrodynamical simulations. We use these approximations as input for a time-dependent gas-grain chemical code to investigate the effects of differing modes of collapse on the molecular abundances in the core. We confirm that our method can provide reasonable agreement with an exact numerical solution of both the hydrodynamics and chemistry while being significantly less computationally expensive, allowing a large grid of models varying multiple input parameters to be run. We present results…
The study of prestellar cores is critical as they set the initial conditions in star formation and determine the final mass of the stellar object. To date, several hypotheses are describing their gravitational collapse. We perform detailed line analysis and modelling of H$_{2}$D$^{+}$ 110 -111 and N$_{2}$H$^{+}$ 4-3 emission at 372 GHz, using 2'x2' maps (JCMT). Our goal is to test the most prominent dynamical models by comparing the modelled gas kinematics and spatial distribution (H$_{2}$D$^{+}$ and N$_{2}$H$^{+}$) with observations towards four prestellar (L1544, L183, L694-2, L1517B) and on…
We study the gravitational collapse of prestellar sources and the associated evolution of their chemical composition. We use the University of Grenoble Alpes Astrochemical Network (UGAN), which includes reactions involving the different nuclear--spin states of H2, H3+, and of the hydrides of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur, for reactions involving up to seven protons. In addition, species-to-species rate coefficients are provided for the ortho/para interconversion of the H3+ + H2 system and isotopic variants. The composition of the medium is followed from an initial steady state through t…
Direct observational measurements of the magnetic field strength in prestellar cores typically find supercritical mass-to-flux ratios, suggesting that the magnetic field is insufficient to prevent gravitational collapse. These measurements suffer from significant uncertainties; an alternative approach is to utilise the sensitivity of prestellar chemistry to the evolutionary history, and indirectly constrain the degree of magnetic support. We combine non-ideal magnetohydrodynamic simulations of prestellar cores with time-dependent chemistry and radiative transfer modelling, producing synthetic …

We investigate the amplification of turbulence through gravitational contraction of the primordial gas in minihalos. We perform numerical simulations to follow the cloud collapse, assuming polytropic equations of state for different initial turbulent Mach numbers and resolutions. We find that the turbulent velocity is amplified solely by gravitational contraction, and eventually becomes comparable to the sound speed, even for small initial turbulent Mach numbers (${\cal M}_0 \gtrsim 0.05$). We derive an analytic formula for the amplification of turbulent velocity in a collapsing cloud, and fin…
We present idealized numerical simulations of prestellar gravitational collapse of a moderate initial filamentary perturbation with an additional central ellipsoidal enhancement (a core) considering a uniform, and a stratified background, the latter representing flattened clouds. Both simulations maintain the filamentary structure during the collapse, developing a hierarchical accretion flow from the cloud to the plane; from there to the filament, and from the filament to the core. The flow changes direction smoothly at every step of the hierarchy, with no density divergence nor a shock develo…
Prestellar cores, the birthplace of Sun-like stars, form from the fragmentation of the filamentary structure that composes molecular clouds, from which they must inherit at least partially the kinematics. Furthermore, when they are on the verge of gravitational collapse, they show signs of subsonic infall motions. How extended these motions are, which depends on how the collapse occurs, remains largely unknown. We want to investigate the kinematics of the envelope that surrounds the prototypical prestellar core L1544, studying the cloud-core connection. To our aims, we observed the $\rm HCO^+$…
Recent theoretical studies have suggested that a magnetic field may play a crucial role in the first star formation in the universe. However, the influence of the magnetic field on the first star formation has yet to be understood well. In this study, we perform three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations taking into account all the relevant cooling processes and non-equilibrium chemical reactions up to the protostar density, in order to study the collapse of magnetized primordial gas cores with self-consistent thermal evolution. Our results show that the thermal evolution of the central…
We investigate differences in the molecular abundances between magnetically super- and sub-critical prestellar cores, performing three-dimensional non-ideal magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulations with varying densities and magnetic field strengths, and post-processing the results with a time-dependent gas-grain chemical code. Most molecular species show significantly more central depletion in subcritical models, due to the longer duration of collapse. However, the directly observable quantities - the molecule to hydrogen column density ratios - are generally too similar for observational data…
While it is generally accepted that the magnetic field and its non-ideal effects play important roles during the stellar formation, simple models of pure hydrodynamics and angular momentum conservation are still widely employed in the studies of disk assemblage in the framework of the so-called "alpha-disk" model due to their simplicity. There has only been a few efforts trying to bridge the gap between a collapsing prestellar core and a developed disk. The goal of the present work is to revisit the assemblage of the protoplanetary disk (PPD), by performing 3D MHD simulations with ambipolar di…
Filamentary structures are closely associated with star-forming cores, but their detailed physical connections are still not clear. We studied the dense gas in the region of OMC-3 MMS-7 in Orion A molecular cloud using the molecular lines observed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and the Submillimeter Array (SMA). The ALMA N$_2$H$^+$ (1-0) emission has revealed three dense filaments intersected at the center, coincident with the central core MMS-7, which has a mass of $3.6\,M_\odot$. The filaments and cores are embedded in a parental clump with total mass of $29\,M_…
We report Atacama Large Millimeter Array observations of 3 mm dust continuum emission and line emission, in HCO$^{+}$, H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$, N$_{2}$H$^{+}$ and CH$_{3}$CN, towards two massive and dense clumps (MDCs) in early but distinct evolutionary phases (prestellar and protostellar), made with the goal of investigating their fragmentation characteristics at angular scales of $\sim$1 $\arcsec$. Towards the prestellar clump we detected ten compact structures (cores), with radius from 1200 to 4500 AU and masses from 1.6 to 20~M$_\odot$. Half of these cores exhibit inverse P Cygni profiles in HCO$…
We have investigated the TUKH122 prestellar core in the Orion A cloud using ALMA 3 mm dust continuum, N$_2$H$^+$ ($J=1-0$), and CH$_3$OH ($J_K=2_K-1_K$) molecular line observations. Previous studies showed that TUKH122 is likely on the verge of star formation because the turbulence is almost dissipated and chemically evolved among other starless cores in the Orion A cloud. By combining ALMA 12-m and ACA data, we recover extended emission with a resolution of $\sim5"$ corresponding to 0.01 pc and identify 6 condensations with a mass range of $0.1-0.4$ $M_\odot$ and a radius of $\lesssim0.01$ pc…
The degree of coupling between the gas and the magnetic field during the collapse of a core and the subsequent formation of a disk depends on the assumed dust size distribution. We study the impact of grain-grain coagulation on the evolution of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) resistivities during the collapse of a prestellar core. We use a 1-D model to follow the evolution of the dust size distribution, out-of-equilibrium ionization state and gas chemistry during the collapse of a prestellar core. To compute the grain-grain collisional rate, we consider models for both random and systematic, size-de…
We have performed survey-type observations in 1 mm continuum and molecular lines toward dense cores (32 prestellar + 7 protostellar) with an average density of $\gtrsim$10$^5$ cm$^{-3}$ in the Taurus molecular clouds using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array-Atacama Compact Array (ALMA-ACA) stand-alone mode with an angular resolution of 6.$''$5 ($\sim$900 au). The primary purpose of this study is to investigate the innermost part of dense cores toward understanding the initial condition of star formation. In the protostellar cores, contributions from protostellar disks dominate th…
Hot corino chemistry and warm carbon chain chemistry (WCCC) are driven by gas-grain interactions in star-forming cores: radical-radical recombination reactions to form complex organic molecules (COMs) in the ice mantle, sublimation of CH$_4$ and COMs, and their subsequent gas-phase reactions. These chemical features are expected to depend on the composition of ice mantle which is set in the prestellar phase. We calculated the gas-grain chemical reaction network considering a layered ice-mantle structure in star-forming cores, to investigate how the hot corino chemistry and WCCC depend on the p…
We investigate the generation of turbulence during the prestellar gravitational contraction of a turbulent spherical core. We define the ratio $g$ of the one-dimensional turbulent velocity dispersion, $σ_\mathrm{1D}$ to the gravitational velocity $v_g$, to then analytically estimate $g$ under the assumptions of a) equipartition or virial equilibrium between the gravitational ($E_g$) and turbulent kinetic ($E_\mathrm{turb}$) energies and b) stationarity of transfer from gravitational to turbulent energy (implying $E_\mathrm{turb}/E_g=$cst). In the equipartition and virial cases, we find $g=\sqr…

We utilize the more than 100 gravitationally-bound dense cores formed in our three-dimensional, turbulent MHD simulations reported in Chen & Ostriker (2015) to analyze structural, kinematic, and magnetic properties of prestellar cores. Our statistical results disagree with the classical theory of star formation, in which cores evolve to be oblate with magnetic field parallel to the minor axes. Instead, we find that cores are generally triaxial, although the core-scale magnetic field is still preferentially most parallel to the core's minor axis and most perpendicular to the major axis. The int…
We aim to quantify the effect of chemistry on the infall velocity in the prestellar core L1544. Previous observational studies have found evidence for double-peaked line profiles for the rotational transitions of several molecules, which cannot be accounted for with the models presently available for the physical structure of the source, without ad hoc up-scaling of the infall velocity. We ran one-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of the collapse of a core with L1544-like properties (in terms of mass and outer radius), using a state-of-the-art chemical model with a very large chemical net…
The mass function of clumps observed in molecular clouds raises interesting theoretical issues, especially in its relation to the stellar initial mass function. We propose a statistical model of the mass function of prestellar cores (CMF), formed in self-gravitating isothermal clouds at a given stage of their evolution. The latter is characterized by the mass-density probability distribution function ($ρ$-PDF), which is a power-law with slope $q$. The variety of MCs is divided in ensembles according to the PDF slope and each ensemble is represented by a single spherical cloud. The cores are co…
Disentangling the different stages of the star-formation process, in particular in the high-mass regime, is a challenge in astrophysics. Chemical clocks could help alleviating this problem, but their evolution strongly depends on many parameters, leading to degeneracy in the interpretation of the observational data. One of these uncertainties is the degree of CO depletion. We present here the first self-consistent magneto-hydrodynamic simulations of high-mass star-forming regions at different scales, fully coupled with a non-equilibrium chemical network, which includes C-N-O bearing molecules.…
Observations have indicated that the prestellar core mass function (CMF) is similar to the stellar initial mass function (IMF), except for an offset towards larger masses. This has led to the idea that there is a one-to-one relation between cores and stars, such that the whole stellar mass reservoir is contained in a gravitationally-bound prestellar core, as postulated by the core-collapse model, and assumed in recent theoretical models of the stellar IMF. We test the validity of this assumption by comparing the final mass of stars with the mass of their progenitor cores in a high-resolution s…
Two families of models compete to explain the formation of high-mass stars. The quasi-static models predict the existence of high-mass pre-stellar cores sustained by a high degree of turbulence while competitive accretion models predict that high-mass proto-stellar cores evolve from low/intermediate mass proto-stellar cores in dynamic environments. We present ALMA (1.4 mm continuum emission and $^{12}$CO emission line) and MOPRA (HCO$^{+}$, H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$ and N$_2$H$^+$ molecular line emissions) observations of a sample of 9 starless massive dense cores (MDCs) discovered in a recent Herschel…
In dense starless and protostellar cores, the relative abundance of deuterated species to their non-deuterated counterparts can become orders of magnitude greater than in the local interstellar medium. This enhancement proceeds through multiple pathways in the gas phase and on dust grains, where the chemistry is strongly dependent on the physical conditions. In this Chapter, we discuss how sensitive, high resolution observations with the ngVLA of emission from deuterated molecules will trace both the dense gas structure and kinematics on the compact physical scales required to track the gravit…

Recent observations of the HDO/H$_2$O ratio toward protostars in isolated and clustered environments show an apparent dichotomy, where isolated sources show higher D/H ratios than clustered counterparts. Establishing which physical and chemical processes create this differentiation can provide insights into the chemical evolution of water during star formation and the chemical diversity during the star formation process and in young planetary systems. Methods: The evolution of water is modeled using 3D physicochemical models of a dynamic star-forming environment. The physical evolution during …
To understand the formation of stars from clouds of molecular gas, one essentially needs to know two things: What gas collapses, and how long it takes to do so. We address these questions by embedding pseudo-Lagrangian tracer particles in three simulations of self-gravitating turbulence. We identify prestellar cores at the end of the collapse, and use the tracer particles to rewind the simulations to identify the preimage gas for each core at the beginning of each simulation. This is the first of a series of papers, wherein we present the technique and examine the first question: What gas coll…
We deploy and demonstrate the capabilities of the magnetic field model developed by Ewertowski & Basu (2013) by fitting observed polarimetry data of the prestellar core FeSt 1-457. The analytic hourglass magnetic field function derived directly from Maxwell's equations yields a central-to-surface magnetic field strength ratio in the equatorial plane, as well as magnetic field directions with relative magnitudes throughout the core. This fit emerges from a comparison of a single plane of the model with the polarization map that results from the integrated properties of the magnetic field and du…
