The recent observation of high-energy neutrinos from the 2017 flare of the blazar TXS~0506+056, together with counterparts across the whole electromagnetic spectrum, opens up new possibilities for investigating the properties of this class of objects as well as the traversed medium. Propagation effects such as the attenuation of the very-high-energy gamma-ray component by the extragalactic background light are well known, and usually taken into account when fitting spectral energy distributions of objects. Other effects such as those of intergalactic magnetic fields are, however, often neglected. In this work, we present a comprehensive study of the influence of these fields and the extragalactic background light on the determination of the intrinsic gamma-ray spectrum of this blazar.
The origin of magnetic fields in the universe is an open problem. Seed magnetic fields possibly produced in early times may have survived up to the present day close to their original form, providing an untapped window to the primeval universe. The recent observations of high-energy neutrinos from the blazar TXS 0506+056 in association with an electromagnetic counterpart in a broad range of wavelengths can be used to probe intergalactic magnetic fields via the time delay between the neutrinos and gamma rays as well as the time dependence of the gamma-ray fluxes. Using extensive three-dimension…
Recent detection of the neutrino event, IceCube-170922A by IceCube observatory from the Blazar TXS 0506+056 in the state of enhanced gamma ray emission indicates for acceleration of cosmic rays in the blazar jet. The non-detection of the broadline emission in the optical spectrum of TXS 0506+056 and other BL Lac objects suggests that external photons emissions are weak and hence photo-meson (p-gamma) interaction may not be a favored mechanism for high energy neutrino production. The lack of broadline signatures also creates doubt about the presence of a high density cloud in the vicinity of th…
The gamma-ray blazar TXS 0506+056 was found with an enhanced gamma-ray emission state in spatial and temporal coincidence with the IceCube high energy neutrino event IC170922A. This is the most significant association by far between a high-energy neutrino event and a blazar in a flaring state. Studying the time evolution and spectral behavior of the blazar emission may help in identifying the sources of the diffuse neutrino flux observed by IceCube and the origin of energetic cosmic rays. TXS 0506+056 was detected by the VERITAS gamma-ray observatory with a significance of 5.8 standard deviati…
While blazars have long been one of the candidates in the search for the origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays and astrophysical neutrinos, the BL Lac object TXS 0506+056 is the first extragalactic source that is correlated with some confidence with a high-energy neutrino event recorded with IceCube. At the time of the IceCube event, the source was found in a high state in gamma-rays with Fermi-LAT and MAGIC. We have explored in detail the parameter space of a lepto-hadronic radiative model, assuming a single emitting region inside the relativistic jet. We present the complete range of possi…
For the first time since the discovery of high-energy cosmic neutrinos by IceCube, a multimessenger campaign identified a distant gamma ray blazar, TXS 0506+056, as the source of a high-energy neutrino. The extraordinary brightness of the blazar despite its distance suggests that it may belong to a special class of sources that produce cosmic rays. Moreover, over the last 10 years of data, the high-energy neutrino flux from the source is dominated by a previous neutrino flare in 2014, which implies that flaring sources strongly contribute to the cosmic ray flux. We investigate the contribution…
On 22nd of September 2017 the IceCube collaboration sent an alert for an EHE (Extreme High Energy) event, corresponding to the reconstruction of a muonic neutrino (IC-170922A) with energy $\sim 290$ TeV. A multi-wavelength follow-up campaign associated this neutrino event with a gamma-ray flaring state of the BL Lac TXS 0506+056 located at z=0.3365. From the same position of the sky a muonic neutrino excess is observed in a time window of 110 days around 13th of December 2014. These observations together suggest TXS 0506+056 as a possible neutrino emitter. We report here a long term gamma-ray …
The gamma-ray blazar TXS 0506+056, was discovered in VHE gamma-rays by the MAGIC telescopes in 2017 in a follow-up campaign of a high energy neutrino event IceCube-170922A (IC+Fermi+MAGIC++, Science 361, eaat1378 (2018)). Subsequent multivawelenght (MWL) observations and theoretical modeling in a frame of hadro-leptonic emission confirmed that this source could be a potential cosmic ray and neutrino emitter (MAGIC Collaboration, Ansoldi et al., (2018)). This is, by far, the most significant association between a high-energy neutrino and an astrophysical source emitting gamma rays and X-rays. T…

While active galactic nuclei with relativistic jets have long been prime candidates for the origin of extragalactic cosmic rays and neutrinos, the BL Lac object TXS 0506+056 is the first astrophysical source observed to be associated with some confidence ($\sim 3σ$) with a high-energy neutrino, IceCube-170922A, detected by the IceCube Observatory. The source was found to be active in high-energy gamma-rays with Fermi-LAT and in very-high-energy gamma-rays with the MAGIC telescopes. To consistently explain the observed neutrino and multi-wavelength electromagnetic emission of TXS 0506+056, we i…
The physical nature of the mechanism responsible for the emission of neutrinos in active galactic nuclei (AGN) has been matter of debate in the literature, with relativistic jets of radio-loud AGNs as possible candidates to be the sources of high energy neutrinos. The most prominent candidate so far is the blazar TXS 0506+056, which is found to be associated with the neutrino event IceCube-170922A. Furthermore, the IceCube reported an excess of neutrinos towards TXS 0506+056 between September 2014 and March 2015, even though this association needs additional investigation, considering the pres…
The orientation of the jet axis to the line of sight of the observer plays a major role in explaining the phenomena observed from blazars and radio galaxies. In the gamma-ray band, only a handful of radio galaxies have been identified, all being located in the nearby Universe (z<0.5). Here we report the identification of 4FGL J1435.5+2021, associated with TXS 1433+205, as a Fanaroff-Riley type II (FR II) radio galaxy at a considerably higher redshift of z=0.748, thereby making it the most distant gamma-ray detected radio galaxy known as of now. The Very Large Array Sky Survey data at 3 GHz res…
TXS 0506+056, a source of the extreme energy neutrino event, IceCube-170922A, was observed on 22 September 2017. The Fermi-LAT detector reported high energy (HE) $γ$-ray flare between 100 MeV and 100 GeV starting from 15 September 2017 from this source. Several attempts to trace the very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray counterparts around the IceCube-170922A resulted in no success. Only after 28 September, the Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescopes observed the first VHE gamma-rays from the blazar above 100 GeV. The $\sim$ 41 hr survey resulted in VHE-$γ$ ray activity til…
The IceCube report of a $\sim 3.5σ$ excess of $13\pm5$ neutrino events in the direction of the blazar TXS 05056+056 in 2014-2015 and the 2017 detection of a high-energy neutrino, IceCube-170922A, during a gamma-ray flare from the same blazar, have revived the interest in scenarios for neutrino production in blazars. We perform comprehensive analyses on the long-term electromagnetic emission of TXS 05056+056 using optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray data from the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN), the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory (Swift), the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI), a…
The study of gamma-ray blazars is usually hindered due to the lack of information on their redshifts and on their low energy photon fields. This information is key to understand the effect on the gamma-ray absorption due to either extragalactic background light and/or intrinsic absorption and emission processes. All this information has also an impact on the determination of the location of the emitting region within the relativistic jets. In this work a new optical spectroscopic characterization is presented for three gamma-ray blazars: S4 0954+65, TXS 1515-273 and RX J0812.0+0237. For all th…
A high-energy muon neutrino event, IceCube-170922A, was recently discovered in both spatial and temporal coincidence with a gamma-ray flare of the blazar TXS 0506+056. It has been shown, with standard one-zone models, that neutrinos can be produced in the blazar jet via hadronic interactions, but with a flux which is mostly limited by the X-ray data. In this work, we explore the neutrino production from TXS 0506+056 by invoking two physically distinct emission zones in the jet, separated by the broad line region (BLR). Using the Doppler-boosted radiation of the BLR as the target photon field, …
IceCube discovered a flux of cosmic neutrinos originating in extragalactic sources with an energy density close to that in gamma rays and cosmic rays. A multimessenger campaign triggered by the coincident observation of a gamma-ray flare and a 290-TeV IceCube neutrino pinpointed the cosmic-ray accelerator TXS 0506+056. Subsequently, the IceCube archival data revealed a 3-month burst of 13 cosmic neutrinos in 2014-15 that dominates the neutrino flux of the source over the 9.5 years of observations. The original identification of the source as a blazar was puzzling because it requires a major ac…

The detection of a long flaring activity from blazar TXS 0506+056 in temporal and spatial coincidence with the energetic neutrino IceCube-170922A provided evidence about the photo-hadronic interactions in this source. However, analysis of the archival neutrino and multi-wavelength data from the direction of this blazar between September 2014 and March 2015 revealed a "neutrino flare" without observing quasi-simultaneous activity in the gamma-ray bands, posing challenges to established models. Electron-positron ($e^\pm$) pairs generated from the accretion disks have been amply proposed as a mec…
We have carried out a Chandra X-ray and multi-frequency radio VLBA study of the AGN TXS 0128+554, which is associated with the Fermi gamma-ray source 4FGL J0131.2+5547. The AGN is unresolved in a target 19.3 ks Chandra image, and its spectrum is well fit by a simple absorbed power law model, with no distinguishable spectral features. Its relatively soft X-ray spectrum compared to other CSOs may be indicative of a thermal emission component, for which we were able to obtain an upper temperature limit of kT = 0.08 keV. The compact radio morphology and measured advance speed of 0.32c +- 0.07c ind…
We discuss possible interpretations of the neutrinos observed from the AGN blazar TXS 0506+056 in the multi-messenger and multi-wavelength context, including both the 2014-15 and 2017 neutrino flares. While the neutrino observed in September 2017 has to describe contemporary data in e.g. the X-ray and VHE gamma-ray ranges, data at the 2014-15 excess are much sparser. We demonstrate that in both cases the simplest possible one-zone AGN blazar models face challenges. While the 2017 flare can be well interpreted by considering more sophisticated source geometries, the 2014-15 flare is much harder…
The observation of a very-high-energy neutrino by IceCube (IceCube-170922A) and its association with the flaring blazar TXS 0506+056 provided the first multimessenger observations of blazar jets, demonstrating the important role of protons in their dynamics and emission. In this paper, we present SOPRANO (https://www.amsdc.am/soprano), a new conservative implicit kinetic code which follows the time evolution of the isotropic distribution functions of protons, neutrons and the secondaries produced in photo-pion and photo-pair interactions, alongside with the evolution of photon and electron/pos…
The magnetic field in intergalactic space gives important information about magnetogenesis in the early universe. The properties of this field can be probed by searching for radiation of secondary e$^+ $e$^-$ pairs created by TeV photons, that produce GeV range radiation by Compton-scattering cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons. The arrival times of the GeV "echo" photons depend strongly on the magnetic field strength and coherence length. A Monte Carlo code that accurately treats pair creation is developed to simulate the spectrum and time-dependence of the echo radiation. The extrapola…
The detection of the high-energy neutrino IC-170922A in spatial (within the error region) and temporal flare activity correlation with the blazar TXS 0506+056 allowed these objects to be considered as progenitor sources of neutrinos. Besides this, no more detection of this kind was reported. Some other neutrinos detected by IceCube show a spatial correlation (within the error region) from other Fermi-LAT detected sources. However, these objects did not show a flare activity like TXS 0506+056. Assuming a lepto-hadronic scenario through p$γ$ interactions, this work describes the SED in some obje…
We investigate whether the emission of neutrinos observed in 2014-15 from the direction of the blazar TXS 0506+056 can be accommodated with leptohadronic multi-wavelength models of the source commonly adopted for the 2017 flare. While multi-wavelength data during the neutrino flare are sparse, the large number of neutrino events ($13\pm5$) challenges the missing activity in gamma rays. We illustrate that two to five neutrino events during the flare can be explained with leptohadronic models of different categories: a one-zone model, a compact core model, and an external radiation field model. …
On 2017 September 22, the IceCube Neutrino Observatory reported the detection of the high-energy neutrino event \icnu, of potential astrophysical origin. It was soon determined that the neutrino direction was consistent with the location of the gamma-ray blazar \txs~(3FGL J0509.4+0541), which was in an elevated gamma-ray emission state as measured by the \emph{Fermi} satellite. VERITAS observations of the neutrino/blazar region started on 2017 September 23 in response to the neutrino alert and continued through 2018 February 6. While no significant very-high-energy (VHE; E $>$ 100 GeV) emissio…
A neutrino outburst between September 2014 and March 2015 was discovered from the blazar TXS 0506+056 by an investigation of $9.5$ years of IceCube data, while the blazar was in a quiescent state during the outburst with a gamma-ray flux only about one-fifth of the neutrino flux. In this work, we give a possible interpretation of the abnormal feature by proposing that the neutrino outburst originates from the interaction between a relativistic jet and a dense gas cloud formed via the tidally disrupted envelope of a red giant being blown apart by the impact of the jet. Gamma-ray photons and ele…
What triggers collimated relativistic outflows or jets, from the centers of galaxies remains a fundamental question in astrophysics. The merging of two galaxies has been proposed to realize the conditions to successfully launch and drive such jets into the intergalactic medium. However, evidences for the operation of this mechanism are scarce. Here we report the first unambiguous detection of an ongoing merger of a narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy, TXS 2116$-$077, hosting a closely aligned, $γ$-ray emitting relativistic jet with a Seyfert 2 galaxy at a separation of $\sim$12 kpc, using the observa…
A high-energy neutrino event detected by IceCube on 22 September 2017 was coincident in direction and time with a gamma-ray flare from the blazar TXS 0506+056. Prompted by this association, we investigated 9.5 years of IceCube neutrino observations to search for excess emission at the position of the blazar. We found an excess of high-energy neutrino events with respect to atmospheric backgrounds at that position between September 2014 and March 2015. Allowing for time-variable flux, this constitutes 3.5σ evidence for neutrino emission from the direction of TXS 0506+056, independent of and pri…

Detection of the IceCube-170922A neutrino coincident with the flaring blazar TXS 0506+056, the first and only 3-sigma high-energy neutrino source association to date, offers a potential breakthrough in our understanding of high-energy cosmic particles and blazar physics. We present a comprehensive analysis of TXS 0506+056 during its flaring state, using newly collected Swift, NuSTAR, and X-shooter data with Fermi observations and numerical models to constrain the blazar's particle acceleration processes and multimessenger (electromagnetic and high-energy neutrino) emissions. Accounting properl…
Recent detection of the neutrino events IceCube-170922A, 13 muon-neutrino events observed in 2014-2015 and IceCube-141209A by IceCube observatory from the Blazars, namely TXS 0506+056, PKS 0502+049/TXS 0506+056 and GB6 J1040+0617 respectively in the state of enhanced gamma-ray emission, indicates the acceleration of cosmic rays in the blazar jets. The photo-meson ($pγ$) interaction cannot explain the IceCube observations of 13 neutrino events. The non-detection of broadline emission in the optical spectra of the IceCube blazars, however, question the hadronuclear (pp) interaction interpretatio…
Blazars constitute the vast majority of extragalactic $γ$-ray sources. They can also contribute a sizable fraction of the diffuse astrophysical neutrinos detected by IceCube. In the past few years, the real-time alert system of IceCube has led to multiwavelength follow-up of very high-energy neutrino events of plausible astrophysical origin. Spatial and temporal coincidences of these neutrino events with the high-activity state of $γ$-ray blazars can provide a unique opportunity to decipher cosmic-ray interactions in the relativistic jets. Assuming that blazars accelerate cosmic rays up to ult…
We present a procedure to generally constrain the environments of neutrino-producing sites in photomeson production models of jetted Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) where any origin of the dominant target photon field can be accommodated. For this purpose we reconstruct the minimum target photon spectrum required to produce the (observed) neutrino spectrum, and derive the distributions of all corresponding secondary particles. These initiate electromagnetic cascades with an efficiency that is linked to the neutrino production rate. The derived photon spectra represent the minimum radiation emergi…
The evidence for joint gamma and neutrino emission from the blazar TXS 0506+056 has renewed interest in blazars as neutrino sources. The detection of neutrinos from blazars can be seen as the smoking gun for the presence of relativistic protons in blazar's jets, and can thus help identify blazars, and active galactic nuclei in general, as cosmic-ray accelerators. In this contribution I first introduce blazars and blazar hadronic models, and then present the results of the multi-messenger modeling of both the 2017 gamma-neutrino flare, and the 2014-2015 neutrino-only flare of TXS 0506+056. For …
We determine the effect of intergalactic magnetic fields on the distribution of high energy gamma rays by performing three-dimensional Monte Carlo simulations of the development of gamma-ray-induced electromagnetic cascades in the magnetized intergalactic medium. We employ the so-called 'Large Sphere Observer' method to efficiently simulate blazar gamma ray halos. We study magnetic fields with a Batchelor spectrum and with maximal left- and right-handed helicities. We also consider the case of sources whose jets are tilted with respect to the line of sight. We verify the formation of extended …

One of the most promising ways to probe intergalactic magnetic fields (IGMFs) is through gamma rays produced in electromagnetic cascades initiated by high-energy gamma rays or cosmic rays in the intergalactic space. Because the charged component of the cascade is sensitive to magnetic fields, gamma-ray observations of distant objects such as blazars can be used to constrain IGMF properties. Ground-based and space-borne gamma-ray telescopes deliver spectral, temporal, and angular information of high-energy gamma-ray sources, which carries imprints of the intervening magnetic fields. This provid…
In this work, we investigate the 2014-2015 neutrino flare associated with the blazar TXS 0506+056 and a recently discovered muon neutrino event IceCube-200107A in spatial coincidence with the blazar 4FGL J0955.1+3551, under the framework of a two-zone radiation model of blazars where an inner/outer blob close to/far from the supermassive black hole are invoked. An interesting feature that the two sources share in common is that no evidence of GeV gamma-ray activity is found during the neutrino detection period, probably implying a large opacity for GeV gamma rays in the neutrino production reg…
In this paper intergalatic electromagnetic cascades are used as a probe of cosmic ray sources. This is achieved as follows. In extragalactic space cosmic rays initiate electromagnetic cascades in which gamma-ray and neutrino emission arises. We used the joint analysis of cosmic ray data, along with extragalactic gamma-ray and neutrino emission, to study particle acceleration in the vicinity of supermassive black holes. Particle injection spectra depend on processes of particle acceleration, and here we discuss models with various injection spectra. The computation of the propagation of cosmic …

TeV emission from blazars can be used to probe the intergalactic magnetic fields and measure their intensity, coherence length, and helicity. Intergalactic magnetic fields deflect the electron-positron pairs produced by very-high-energy gamma-rays from blazars, resulting in broadened beams of cascade gamma-rays developing along the projected direction of the blazar jet. We present an analysis that uses for the first time the jet orientation of 12 high-synchrotron-peaked (HSP) BL~Lac-type blazars from VLBA radio observations to search for signatures of pair haloes in the Fermi-LAT data. Our sea…
