We are concerned with the question of well-posedness of stochastic three dimensional incompressible Euler equations. In particular, we introduce a novel class of dissipative solutions and show that (i) existence; (ii) weak--strong uniqueness; (iii) non-uniqueness in law; (iv) existence of a strong Markov solution; (v) non-uniqueness of strong Markov solutions; all hold true within this class. Moreover, as a byproduct of (iii) we obtain existence and non-uniqueness of probabilistically strong and analytically weak solutions defined up to a stopping time and satisfying an energy inequality.
We construct solutions to the randomly-forced Navier--Stokes--Poisson system in periodic three-dimensional domains or in the whole three-dimensional Euclidean space. These solutions are weak in the sense of PDEs and also weak in the sense of probability. As such, they satisfy the system in the sense of distributions and the underlying probability space and the stochastic driving force are also unknowns of the problem. Additionally, these solutions dissipate energy, satisfies a relative energy inequality in the sense of [4] and satisfy a renormalized form of the continuity equation in the sense…
Stochastic fractionally dissipative quasi-geostrophic type equation on $R^d$ with a multiplicative Gaussian noise is considered. We prove the existence of a martingale solution. In the 2D sub-critical case we prove also the pathwise uniqueness of the solutions.
We introduce the concept of stochastic measure-valued solutions to the complete Euler system describing the motion of a compressible inviscid fluid subject to stochastic forcing, where the nonlinear terms are described by defect measures. These solutions are weak in the probabilistic sense (probability space is not a given `priori', but part of the solution) and analytical sense (derivatives only exists in the sense distributions). In particular, we show that: existence, weak-strong principle; a weak measure-valued solution coincides with a strong solution provided the later exists, all hold t…
The existence of a global martingale solution to a cross-diffusion system with multiplicative Wiener noise in a bounded domain with no-flux boundary conditions is shown. The model describes the dynamics of population densities of different species due to segregation cross-diffusion effects. The diffusion matrix is generally neither symmetric nor positive semidefinite. This difficulty is overcome by exploiting the Rao entropy structure. The existence proof uses a stochastic Galerkin method, uniform estimates from the Rao entropy inequality, and the Skorokhod--Jakubowski theorem. Furthermore, an…
We study the stochastic effect on the three-dimensional inviscid primitive equations (PEs, also called the hydrostatic Euler equations). Specifically, we consider a larger class of noises than multiplicative noises, and work in the analytic function space due to the ill-posedness in Sobolev spaces of PEs without horizontal viscosity. Under proper conditions, we prove the local existence of martingale solutions and pathwise uniqueness. By adding vertical viscosity, i.e., considering the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes equations, we can relax the restriction on initial conditions to be only analytic i…
The hydrodynamical model of the collective behavior of animals consists of the Euler equation with additional non-local forcing terms representing the repulsive and attractive forces among individuals. This paper deals with the system endowed with an additional white-noise forcing and an artificial viscous term. We provide a proof of the existence of a dissipative martingale solution -- a cornerstone for a subsequent analysis of the system with stochastic forcing.
We give sufficient criteria for the Doléans-Dade exponential of a stochastic integral with respect to a counting process local martingale to be a true martingale. The criteria are adapted particularly to the case of counting processes and are sufficiently weak to be useful and verifiable, as we illustrate by several examples. In particular, the criteria allow for the construction of for example nonexplosive Hawkes processes as well as counting processes with stochastic intensities depending on diffusion processes.
We introduce a novel concept of dissipative measure-valued martingale solution to the stochastic Euler equations describing the motion of an inviscid incompressible fluid. These solutions are characterized by a parametrized Young measure and a concentration defect measure in the total energy balance. Moreover, they are weak in the probablistic sense i.e., the underlying probablity space and the driving Wiener process are intrinsic part of the solution. In a significant departure from the existing literature, we first exhibit the relative energy inequality for the incompressible Euler equations…
This is an expository review paper elaborating on the proof of the martingale functional central limit theorem (FCLT). This paper also reviews tightness and stochastic boundedness, highlighting one-dimensional criteria for tightness used in the proof of the martingale FCLT. This paper supplements the expository review paper Pang, Talreja and Whitt (2007) illustrating the ``martingale method'' for proving many-server heavy-traffic stochastic-process limits for queueing models, supporting diffusion-process approximations.
This work shows how exponential concentration inequalities for additive functionals of stochastic processes over a finite time interval can be derived from concentration inequalities for martingales. The approach is entirely probabilistic and naturally includes time-inhomogeneous and non-stationary processes as well as initial laws concentrated on a single point. The class of processes studied includes martingales, Markov processes and general square integrable processes. The general approach is complemented by a simple and direct method for martingales, diffusions and discrete-time Markov pro…
Complementing the analysis in [41], we investigate the well-posedness of SPDEs problems of doubly nonlinear type. These arise ubiquitously in the modelization of dissipative media and correspond to generalized balance laws between conservative and nonconservative dynamics. We extend the reach of the classical deterministic case by allowing for stochasticity. The existence of martingale solutions is proved via a regularization technique, hinging on the validity of a Itô formula in a minimal regularity setting. Under additional assumptions, the well-posedness of stochastically strong solutions i…
This paper offers a systematic investigation on the existence of equivalent local martingale deflators, which are multiplicative special semimartingales, in financial markets given by positive semimartingales. In particular, it shows that the existence of such deflators can be characterized by means of the modified semimartingale characteristics. Several examples illustrate our results. Furthermore, we provide interpretations of the deflators from an economic point of view.
Recently, a new approach in the fine analysis of stochastic processes sample paths has been developed to predict the evolution of the local regularity under (pseudo-)differential operators. In this paper, we study the sample paths of continuous martingales and stochastic integrals. We proved that the almost sure 2-microlocal frontier of a martingale can be obtained through the local regularity of its quadratic variation. It allows to link the Hölder regularity of a stochastic integral to the regularity of the integrand and integrator processes. These results provide a methodology to predict th…
We prove a martingale triangular array generalization of the Chow-Birnbaum-Marshall's inequality. The result is used to derive a strong law of large numbers for martingale triangular arrays whose rows are asymptotically stable in a certain sense. To illustrate, we derive a simple proof, based on martingale arguments, of the consistency of kernel regression with dependent data. Another application can be found in \cite{atchadeetfort08} where the new inequality is used to prove a strong law of large numbers for adaptive Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods.
This paper gives new concentration inequalities for the spectral norm of a wide class of matrix martingales in continuous time. These results extend previously established Freedman and Bernstein inequalities for series of random matrices to the class of continuous time processes. Our analysis relies on a new supermartingale property of the trace exponential proved within the framework of stochastic calculus. We provide also several examples that illustrate the fact that our results allow us to recover easily several formerly obtained sharp bounds for discrete time matrix martingales.
We establish the existence of weak martingale solutions to a class of second order parabolic stochastic partial differential equations. The equations are driven by multiplicative jump type noise, with a non-Lipschitz multiplicative functional. The drift in the equations contains a dissipative nonlinearity of polynomial growth.
We compute and discuss the Esscher martingale transform for exponential processes, the Esscher martingale transform for linear processes, the minimal martingale measure, the class of structure preserving martingale measures, and the minimum entropy martingale measure for stochastic volatility models of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type as introduced by Barndorff-Nielsen and Shephard. We show, that in the model with leverage, with jumps both in the volatility and in the returns, all those measures are different, whereas in the model without leverage, with jumps in the volatility only and a continuous ret…
We propose a simple and original approach for solving linear-quadratic mean-field stochastic control problems. We study both finite-horizon and infinite-horizon pro\-blems, and allow notably some coefficients to be stochastic. Extension to the common noise case is also addressed. Our method is based on a suitable version of the martingale formulation for verification theorems in control theory. The optimal control involves the solution to a system of Riccati ordinary differential equations and to a linear mean-field backward stochastic differential equation; existence and uniqueness conditions…
Let $A$ be a pseudo-differential operator with symbol $q(x,ξ)$. In this paper we derive sufficient conditions which ensure the existence of a solution to the $(A,C_c^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^d))$-martingale problem. If the symbol $q$ depends continuously on the space variable $x$, then the existence of solutions is well understood, and therefore the focus lies on martingale problems for pseudo-differential operators with discontinuous coefficients. We prove an existence result which allows us, in particular, to obtain new insights on the existence of weak solutions to a class of Lévy-driven SDEs wi…
We propose a spectral viscosity method (SVM) to approximate the incompressible Euler equations driven by a multiplicative noise. We show that SVM solution converges to a dissipative measure-valued martingale solution. These solutions are weak in the probabilistic sense i.e. the probability space and the driving Wiener process are an integral part of the solution. We also exhibit weak (measure-valued)-strong uniqueness principle. Moreover, we establish strong convergence of approximate solutions to the regular solution of the limit system at least on the lifespan of the latter, thanks to the we…
Constrained Markov processes, such as reflecting diffusions, behave as an unconstrained process in the interior of a domain but upon reaching the boundary are controlled in some way so that they do not leave the closure of the domain. In this paper, the behavior in the interior is specified by a generator of a Markov process, and the constraints are specified by a controlled generator. Together, the generators define a "constrained martingale problem". The desired constrained processes are constructed by first solving a simpler "controlled martingale problem" and then obtaining the desired pro…
We study existence of probability measure valued jump-diffusions described by martingale problems. We develop a simple device that allows us to embed Wasserstein spaces and other similar spaces of probability measures into locally compact spaces where classical existence theory for martingale problems can be applied. The method allows for general dynamics including drift, diffusion, and possibly infinite-activity jumps. We also develop tools for verifying the required conditions on the generator, including the positive maximum principle and certain continuity and growth conditions. To illustra…
We introduce a new concept of dissipative measure-valued martingale solutions to the stochastic compressible Euler equations. These solutions are weak in the probabilistic sense i.e., the probability space and the driving Wiener process are an integral part of the solution. We derive the relative energy inequality for the stochastic compressible Euler equations and, as a corollary, we exhibit pathwise weak-strong uniqueness principle. Moreover, making use of the relative energy inequality, we investigate the low Mach limit (incompressible limit) of the underlying system of equations. As a main…
In the presence of monotone information, the stochastic Thiele equation describing the dynamics of state-wise prospective reserves is closely related to the classic martingale representation theorem. When the information utilized by the insurer is non-monotone, the classic martingale theory does not apply. By taking an infinitesimal approach, we derive a generalized stochastic Thiele equation that allows for information discarding. En passant, we solve some open problems for the classic case of monotone information. The results and their implication in practice are illustrated via examples whe…
We study the strong predictable representation property in filtrations initially enlarged with a random variable L. We prove that the strong predictable representation property can always be transferred to the enlarged filtration as long as the classical density hypothesis of Jacod (1985) holds. This generalizes the existing martingale representation results and does not rely on the equivalence between the conditional and the unconditional laws of L. Depending on the behavior of the density process at zero, different forms of martingale representation are established. The results are illustrat…
This work is devoted to deriving small mass limiting equation for a class of Hamiltonian systems with multiplicative Lévy noise. Derivation of the limiting equation depends on the structure of the stochastic Hamiltonian systems, in which a noise-induced drift term arises. We prove convergence to the limiting equation in probability under appropriate assumptions on smoothness and boundedness. Furthermore, we demonstrate convergence in moment under stronger assumptions. A Lévy type Smoluchowski-Kramers approximation result is presented as an illustrative example.
