The crystalline structure, magnetism, and magnetocaloric effect of a GdCrO$_3$ single crystal grown with the laser-diode-heated floating-zone technique have been studied. The GdCrO$_3$ single crystal crystallizes into an orthorhombic structure with the space group $Pmnb$ at room temperature. Upon cooling, under a magnetic field of 0.1 T, it undergoes a magnetic phase transition at $T_{\textrm{N-Cr}} =$ 169.28(2) K with Cr$^{3+}$ ions forming a canted antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure, accompanied by a weak ferromagnetism. Subsequently, a spin reorientation takes place at $T_{\textrm{SR}} =$ 5.18(2) K due to Gd$^{3+}$-Cr$^{3+}$ magnetic couplings. Finally, the long-range AFM order of Gd$^{3+}$ ions establishes at $T_{\textrm{N-Gd}} =$ 2.10(2) K. Taking into account the temperature-(in)dependent components of Cr$^{3+}$ moments, we obtained an ideal model for describing the paramagnetic behavior of Gd$^{3+}$ ions within 30--140 K. We observed a magnetic reversal (positive $\rightarrow$ negative $\rightarrow$ positive) at 50 Oe with a minimum centering around 162 K. In the studied temperature range of 1.8-300 K, there exists a strong competition between magnetic susceptibilities of Gd$^{3+}$ and Cr$^{3+}$ ions, leading to puzzling magnetic phenomena. We have built the magnetic-field-dependent phase diagrams of $T_{\textrm{N-Gd}}$, $T_{\textrm{SR}}$, and $T_{\textrm{N-Cr}}$, shedding light on the nature of the intriguing magnetism. Moreover, we calculated the magnetic entropy change and obtained a maximum value at 6 K and $Δμ_0H$ = 14 T, i.e., -$ΔS_{\textrm{M}} \approx$ 57.5 J/kg K. Among all RCrO$_3$ (R = $4f^n$ rare earths, $n =$ 7-14) compounds, the single-crystal GdCrO$_3$ compound exhibits the highest magnetic entropy change, as well as an enhanced adiabatic temperature, creating a prominent magnetocaloric effect for potential application in magnetic refrigeration.
We propose the phase diagram of a new pseudo-ternary compound, CoMnGe_{1-x}Sn_{x}, in the range x less than or equal to 0.1. Our phase diagram is a result of magnetic and calometric measurements. We demonstrate the appearance of a hysteretic magnetostructural phase transition in the range x=0.04 to x=0.055, similar to that observed in CoMnGe under hydrostatic pressure. From magnetisation measurements, we show that the isothermal entropy change associated with the magnetostructural transition can be as high as 4.5 J/(K kg) in a field of 1 Tesla. However, the large thermal hysteresis in this tra…
The antiferromagnet Mn$_5$Si$_3$ has recently attracted attention because a noncollinear spin arrangement has been shown to produce a topological anomalous Hall effect and an inverse magnetocaloric effect. Here we synthesize single crystals of Mn$_5$Si$_3$ using flux growth. We determine the phase diagram through magnetization and measure the magnetoresistance and the Hall effect. We find the collinear and noncollinear antiferromagnetic phases at low temperatures and, in addition, a third magnetic phase, in between the two antiferromagnetic phases which has ferromagnetic character. The latter …
We present a theoretical analysis of the magnetocaloric effect in the frustrated antiferromagnet \Eu. Monte Carlo simulations indicate a large magnetic entropy change $ΔS_M^{\text{max}} \sim 5.14$ J kg$^{-1}$K$^{-1}$ at $T=2.45$K for a moderate change in the external magnetic field $ΔB=1.2$ Tesla. The highest value of $ΔS_M$ seems to be associated with the presence of a multicritical point in the magnetic field versus temperature phase diagram (at $B_m\sim 1.2$ Tesla and $T_m\sim 2.2$ K) but it persists with similar large values for a broad range of temperatures $T\lesssim T_m$. Single crystal…
EuRhAl4Si2, crystallizes in tetragonal crystal structure and orders antiferromagnetically at ~12 K. The isothermal magnetization along the two principle directions is highly anisotropic despite Eu2+ being an S-state ion. The variation of entropy change, which is a measure of MCE, with field and temperature, calculated from the isothermal magnetization data taken at various temperatures along the principal crystallographic directions present interesting behavior in EuRhAl4Si2. In the magnetically ordered state the entropy change is non-monotonic below spin flip fields; however, in the paramagne…
The magnetic $H$-$T$ phase diagram and magnetocaloric effect in the recently discovered high-temperature heavy-fermion compound YbCoC$_2$ have been studied. With the increase in the external magnetic field YbCoC$_2$ experiences the metamagnetic transition and then transition to the ferromagnetic state. The dependencies of magnetic entropy change -$ΔS_m (T)$ have segments with positive and negative magnetocaloric effects for $ΔH \leq 6$~T. For $ΔH = 9$~T magnetocaloric effect becomes positive with a maximum value of -$ΔS_m (T)$ is 4.1 J / kg K and a refrigerant capacity is 56.6 J / kg.
We report a detailed study of the magnetic properties of KBaGd(BO$_3$)$_2$, in which magnetic Gd$^{3+}$ ($S=7/2$) ions form into two-dimensional triangular layers. Magnetization, specific heat and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) measurements have been performed on KBaGd(BO$_3$)$_2$ single crystals. The results show that a long-range antiferromagnetic state is established below $T_{\rm N}=0.24$ K. In zero fields, only about half of the full entropy is released at $T_{\rm N}$, indicating that not all the magnetic moments are frozen below the ordering temperature, as expected from the geometrical fru…
We have investigated the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of antiferromagnetic Ising spin chain CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$ by magnetization and heat capacity measurements. Both monoclinic $α$-CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$ and triclinic $γ$-CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$ exhibit field-induced metamagnetic transition from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic state via an intermediate ferrimagnetic state with 1/3 magnetization plateau. Due to this field-induced metamagnetic transition, these systems show large conventional as well as inverse magnetocaloric effects. In $α$-CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$, we observe field-induced complex magnet…
We consider the exactly solvable spin-1/2 $XX$ chain with the three-spin interactions of the $XZX+YZY$ and $XZY-YZX$ types in an external (transverse) magnetic field. We calculate the entropy and examine the magnetocaloric effect for the quantum spin system. We discuss a relation between the cooling/heating efficiency and the ground-state phase diagram of the quantum spin model. We also compare ability to cool/heat in the vicinity of the quantum critical and triple points. Moreover, we examine the magnetocaloric effect for the spin-1/2 $XX$ chain with three-spin interactions in a random (Loren…

We investigate the magnetocaloric properties of the two-dimensional frustrated J1-J2 model on a square lattice. This model describes well the magnetic behavior of two classes of quasi-two-dimensional S = 1/2 vanadates, namely the Li2VOXO4 (X = Si, Ge) and AA'VO(PO4)2 (A, A' = Pb, Zn, Sr, Ba) compounds. The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) consists in the adiabatic temperature change upon changing the external magnetic field. In frustrated systems, the MCE can be enhanced close to the saturation field because of massive degeneracies among low lying excitations. We discuss results for the MCE in the …
We have studied the ultrasonic velocity and ac susceptibility of $URu_2Si_2$ in d. c. magnetic fields up to 45T. A significant difference between the constructed H-T phase diagram and that extracted from earlier pulsed fields measurements can be explained in terms of a large magnetocaloric effect. A hysteresis of metamagnetic transition at low temperatures and a new phase separation line have been observed for the first time.

Magnetization plateaus and enhanced magnetocaloric effect of a spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg and Heisenberg double sawtooth ladder with four-spin interaction
We discuss the implications that new magnetocaloric, thermal expansion and magnetostriction data in $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ single crystals have on its temperature-field phase diagram and uncover the magnetic-field dependence of an apparent energy gap structure $Δ(H)$ that evolves when the low temperature antiferromagnetic order is suppressed. We show that, depending on how the thermal expansion data is modeled, $Δ(H)$ can show a cubic field dependence and remain finite at zero field, consistent with the pure Kitaev model hosting itinerant Majorana fermions and localized $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ fluxes. Our ma…
We report on high-resolution specific-heat and magnetocaloric-effect measurements of the triangular-lattice antiferromagnets CsMn(Br_xI_{1-x})_3 with different x. The evolution of the magnetic phase diagrams from the easy-axis system for x = 0 to the easy-plane system for x = 1 was studied in detail. The specific-heat critical exponent alpha of the almost isotropic x = 0.19 system agrees with the value predicted for a chiral Heisenberg scenario. In an applied magnetic field (B = 6 T) a crossover to a weak first-order transition is detected.
We studied the phase diagram of Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ by means of heat capacity and magnetocaloric effect measurements at temperatures as low as 0.06 K and fields up to 12 T. We confirm the presence of a new quantum critical point at 7.5 T which is characterized by a strong non-Fermi-liquid behavior of the electronic specific heat coefficient $Δ$C/T $\sim$ -logT over more than a decade in temperature, placing strong constraints on theories of its criticality. In particular logarithmic corrections are found when the dimension d is equal to the dynamic critical exponent z, in contrast to the conclusi…
The phase diagram in temperature and magnetic field of the metal-organic, two-leg, spin-ladder compound (C5H12N)2CuBr4 is studied by measurements of the specific heat and the magnetocaloric effect. We demonstrate the presence of an extended spin Luttinger-liquid phase between two field-induced quantum critical points and over a broad range of temperature. Based on an ideal spin-ladder Hamiltonian, comprehensive numerical modelling of the ladder specific heat yields excellent quantitative agreement with the experimental data across the complete phase diagram.
We determine the phase diagram of copper nitrate Cu(NO$_3$)$_2\cdot$2.5D$_2$O in the context of quantum phase transitions and novel states of matter. We establish this compound as an ideal candidate to study quasi-1D Luttinger liquids, 3D Bose-Einstein-Condensation of triplons, and the crossover between 1D and 3D physics. Magnetocaloric effect, magnetization, and neutron scattering data provide clear evidence for transitions into a Luttinger liquid regime and a 3D long-range ordered phase as function of field and temperature. Theoretical simulations of this model material allow us to fully est…
Frustrated magnets with a strong spin-lattice coupling can show rich magnetic phases and the associated fascinating phenomena. A promising platform is the breathing pyrochlore magnet CuInCr$_{4}$S$_{8}$ with localized $S=3/2$ Cr$^{3+}$ ions, which is proposed to be effectively viewed as an $S=6$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the face-centered-cubic lattice. Here, we unveil that CuInCr$_{4}$S$_{8}$ exhibits a complex magnetic phase diagram with a small phase pocket ($A$ phase) by means of magnetization, magnetostriction, magnetocapacitance, and magnetocaloric-effect measurements in pulsed high …
The magnetic, thermal and transport properties as well as electronic band structure of MnPtSi are reported. MnPtSi is a metal that undergoes a ferromagnetic transition at $T_{\mathrm{C}}=340$(1) K and a spin-reorientation transition at $T_{\mathrm{N}}=326$(1) K to an antiferromagnetic phase. First-principles electronic structure calculations indicate a not-fully polarized spin state of Mn in a $d^5$ electron configuration with $J=S=3$/2, in agreement with the saturation magnetization of 3~$μ_{\mathrm{B}}$ in the ordered state and the observed paramagnetic effective moment. A sizeable anomalous…
Combined experimental and modeling studies of the magnetocaloric effect, ultrasound, and magnetostriction were performed on single-crystal samples of the spin-dimer system Sr$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$ in large magnetic fields, to probe the spin-correlated regime in the proximity of the field-induced XY-type antiferromagnetic order also referred to as a Bose-Einstein condensate of magnons. The magnetocaloric effect, measured under adiabatic conditions, reveals details of the field-temperature ($H,T$) phase diagram, a dome characterized by critical magnetic fields $H_{c1}$ = 30.4 T, $H_{c2}$ = 62 T, and a …
Specific heat and the magnetocaloric effect are used to probe the field-induced up-up-down phase of Cs2CuBr4, a quasi-two-dimensional spin-1/2 triangular antiferromagnet with near-maximal frustration. The shape of the magnetic phase diagram shows that the phase is stabilized by quantum fluctuations, not by thermal fluctuations as in the corresponding phase of classical spins. The magnon gaps determined from the specific heat are considerably larger than those expected for a Heisenberg antiferromagnet, probably due to the presence of a small Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction.
For the last few decades, researchers have been intrigued by multipolar ordering phenomena while looking for the related quantum criticality in the heavy-fermion Kondo system Ce$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$B$_6$. However, critical phenomena induced by substitution level ($x$), temperature ($T$), and magnetic field ($B$) are poorly understood despite a large collection of experimental results is available. In this work, we present $T$-$B$, $x$-$T$, and $x$-$B$ phase diagrams of Ce$_{1-x}$La$_x$B$_6$ ($\mathbf{B}\parallel[110]$). These are completed by analyzing heat capacity, magnetocaloric effect (MCE), an…
The ferrimagnetic spinel MnCr2S4 shows a variety of magnetic-field-induced phase transitions owing to bond frustration and strong spin-lattice coupling. However, the site-resolved magnetic properties at the respective field-induced phases in high magnetic fields remain elusive. Our soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism studies up to 40 T directly evidence element-selective magnetic-moment reorientations in the field-induced phases. The complex magnetic structures are further supported by entropy changes extracted from magnetocaloric-effect measurements. Moreover, thermodynamic experiments rev…
Ba3Mn2O8 is a spin-dimer compound based on pairs of S=1, 3d^2, Mn^{5+} ions arranged on a triangular lattice. Antiferromagnetic intradimer exchange leads to a singlet ground state in zero-field. Here we present the first results of thermodynamic measurements for single crystals probing the high-field ordered states of this material associated with closing the spin gap to the excited triplet states. Specific heat, magnetocaloric effect, and torque magnetometry measurements were performed in magnetic fields up to 32 T and temperatures down to 20 mK. For fields above H_{c1} ~ 8.7 T, these measure…
By performing heat capacity, magnetocaloric effect, torque magnetometry and force magnetometry measurements up to 33 T, we have mapped out the T-H phase diagram of the S = 1/2 spin dimer compound Ba3Cr2O8. We found evidence for field-induced magnetic order between Hc1 = 12.52(2) T and Hc2 = 23.65(5) T, with the maximum transition temperature Tc = 2.7 K at H = 18 T. The lower transition can likely be described by Bose-Einstein condensation of triplons theory, and this is consistent with the absence of any magnetization plateaus in our magnetic torque and force measurements. In contrast, the nat…
It has recently been suggested that the organic compound NiCl$_2$-4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ (DTN) exhibits Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) of the Ni spin degrees of freedom for fields applied along the tetragonal c-axis. The Ni spins exhibit 3D XY-type antiferromagnetic order above a field-induced quantum critical point at $H_{c1} \sim 2$ T. The Ni spin fluid can be characterized as a system of effective bosons with a hard-core repulsive interaction in which the antiferromagnetic state corresponds to a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of the phase coherent $S = 1$ Ni spin system. We have investigated the…
We overview physical effects of exchange frustration and quantum spin fluctuations in (quasi-) two dimensional (2D) quantum magnets ($S=1/2$) with square, rectangular and triangular structure. Our discussion is based on the $J_1$-$J_2$ type frustrated exchange model and its generalizations. These models are closely related and allow to tune between different phases, magnetically ordered as well as more exotic nonmagnetic quantum phases by changing only one or two control parameters. We survey ground state properties like magnetization, saturation fields, ordered moment and structure factor in …
We present a comprehensive macroscopic thermodynamic study of the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) $s = \tfrac{1}{2}$ frustrated spin-chain system linarite. Susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat, magnetocaloric effect, magnetostriction, and thermal-expansion measurements were performed to characterize the magnetic phase diagram. In particular, for magnetic fields along the b axis five different magnetic regions have been detected, some of them exhibiting short-range-order effects. The experimental magnetic entropy and magnetization are compared to a theoretical modelling of these quantities u…
The metamagnetic transition between the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic state in UIrGe has been studied at various temperatures by magnetization, heat capacity and magnetocaloric-effect measurements on a single crystal in static and pulsed magnetic fields applied along the orthorhombic b-axis. A first-order transition is observed at temperatures below 13 K and a second-order one at higher temperatures up to the Néel temperature (TN = 16.5 K). The first-order transition is accompanied by a dramatic increase of the Sommerfeld coefficient. Magnetization measurements extended to the paramagneti…
