The ferrimagnetic spinel MnCr2S4 shows a variety of magnetic-field-induced phase transitions owing to bond frustration and strong spin-lattice coupling. However, the site-resolved magnetic properties at the respective field-induced phases in high magnetic fields remain elusive. Our soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism studies up to 40 T directly evidence element-selective magnetic-moment reorientations in the field-induced phases. The complex magnetic structures are further supported by entropy changes extracted from magnetocaloric-effect measurements. Moreover, thermodynamic experiments reveal an unusual tetracritical point in the H-T phase diagram of MnCr2S4 due to strong spin-lattice coupling.
We have grown single crystals of YbFe6Ge6 and LuFe6Ge6 and characterized their anisotropic behaviour through low field magnetic susceptibility, field-dependent magnetization, resistivity and heat capacity measurements. The Yb+3 valency is confirmed by LIII XANES measurements. YbFe6Ge6 crystals exhibit a field-dependent, sudden reorientation of the Fe spins at about 63 K, a unique effect in the RFe6Ge6 family (R = rare earths) where the Fe ions order anti-ferromagnetically with Neel temperatures above 450 K and the R ions' magnetism appears to behave independently. The possible origins of this …
The spin reorientation (SR) phenomenon of the square-lattice antiferromagnets RMnAsO (R = Ce, Nd) was investigated by analyzing the spin exchange interactions between the rare-earth and transition-metal ions (R3+ and Mn2+, respectively) on the basis of density functional calculations. It is found that the symmetry and strength of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction are determined primarily by the partially filled 4f states of the R3+ ions, and that the DM and biquadratic (BQ) exchanges between the R3+ and Mn2+ ions are unusually strong and control the observed spin reorientation phenome…
The structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of NdFe$_{0.5}$Mn$_{0.5}$O$_3$ have been studied in detail using bulk magnetization, neutron/x-ray diffraction and first principles density functional theory calculations. The material crystallizes in the orthorhombic $Pbnm$ structure, where both Mn and Fe occupy the same crystallographic site ($4b$). Mn/Fe sublattice of the compound orders in to a G-type antiferromagnetic phase close to 250\,K where the magnetic structure belongs to $Γ_{1}$ irreducible representation with spins aligned along the crystallographic $b$ direction. This is unconv…
In present study, the magnetic structure and spin reorientation of mixed doped orthoferrite Nd$_{0.5}$Dy$_{0.5}$FeO$_3$ have been investigated. Similar to both parent compounds (NdFeO$_3$ and DyFeO$_3$), the magnetic structure of Fe$^{3+}$ belongs to $Γ_{4}$ irreducible representation (G$_{x}$, F$_{z}$) at room temperature. The experimental measurements confirmed the spin reorientation where magnetic structure of Fe$^{3+}$ changes from $Γ_{4}$ to $Γ_{2}$(F$_{x}$, G$_{z}$) between 75 and 20 \,K while maintaining G-type configuration. Such a gradual spin reorientation is unusual since the large …
We have performed a symmetry analysis of the properties of the recently discovered quasi-one-dimensional compound BaCu_2Si_2O_7. The existence of the unusual spin-reorientation transitions is explained as an effect of the unusually strong relativistic interactions. The possible connection between the magnitude of the relativistic interactions and the low-dimensional structure of the BaCu_2Si_2O_7 is discussed. The structure of the magnetic phases is determined.
We report magnetic optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) polarimetry and imaging on Sr$_2$Cu$_3$O$_4$Cl$_2$, which allows direct visualization of the mesoscopic antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure of a parent cuprate. Temperature- and magnetic-field-dependent SHG reveals large domains with 90$^{\circ}$ relative orientations that are stabilized by a combination of uniaxial magnetic anisotropy and the Earth's magnetic field. Below a temperature $T_R$ $\sim$ 97 K, we observe an unusual 90$^{\circ}$ spin reorientation transition, possibly driven by competing magnetic anisotropies of the two coppe…
Neutron and synchrotron resonant X-ray magnetic scattering (RXMS) complemented by heat capacity and resistivity measurements reveal the evolution of the magnetic structures of Fe and Ce sublattices in single crystal CeFeAsO. The RXMS of magnetic reflections at the Ce $L_{\rm II}$-edge shows a magnetic transition that is specific to the Ce antiferromagnetic long-range ordering at $T_\texttt{Ce}\approx$ 4 K with short-range Ce ordering above $T_\texttt{Ce}$, whereas neutron diffraction measurements of a few magnetic reflections indicate a transition at $T^{*}\approx$ 12 K with unusual order para…
In this paper we present a comprehensive study of magnetic dynamics in the rare-earth orthoferrite YbFeO$_3$ at temperatures below and above the spin-reorientation (SR) transition $T_{\mathrm{SR}}=7.6$ K, in magnetic fields applied along the $a, b$ and $c$ axes. Using single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering, we observed that the spectrum of magnetic excitations consists of two collective modes well separated in energy: 3D gapped magnons with a bandwidth of $\sim$60 meV, associated with the antiferromagnetically (AFM) ordered Fe subsystem, and quasi-1D AFM fluctuations of $\sim$1 meV within…
In the spinel compound GeCo$_2$O$_4$, the Co$^{2+}$ pyrochlore sublattice presents remarkable magnetic field-induced behaviors that we unveil through neutron and X-ray single-crystal diffraction. The Néel ordered magnetic phase is entered through a structural lowering of the cubic symmetry. In this phase, when a magnetic field is applied along a 2-fold cubic direction, a spin-flop transition of one fourth of the magnetic moments releases the magnetic frustration and triggers magnetostructural effects. At high field, these ultimately lead to an unusual spin reorientation associated to structura…
We have investigated the magnetic and transport properties of Pr$_{0.65}$Ca$_{0.35}$MnO$_3$ and Pr$_{0.82}$Na$_{0.18}$MnO$_3$ with almost same doping level under various magnetic fields. Upon applying a field of 4 T, both compounds undergo a metamagnetic transition from antiferromagnetic (AFM) to ferromagnetic (FM) in the low temperature region. The field-induced FM state is very stable for at least 10$^5$ s even after removing the field. This irreversible FM behavior is different from the spontaneous FM ordering as well as the FM state in a reversible metamagnetic transition. We discuss this …
We present magnetization and Hall effect measurements on the pyrochlore iridate Nd2Ir2O7. Previous muon spin rotation measurements have shown that the system undergoes an unusual transition at T$_M$ = 110 K into a magnetic phase lacking long-range order, followed by a transition at T$_LRO$ = 6 K into a state with long-range magnetic order. We observe a small remnant magnetization when cycling through zero magnetic field at temperatures below T$_M$. Below T$_LRO$, this remnant magnetization increases sharply, and new hysteresis effects appear at a higher field B$_c$ = 2.5 T, while the Hall resi…
Symmetry arguments are used to develop a spin Hamiltonian for the description of the complex magnetic ordering in HoMnO$_3$. Using a novel application of the Landau Lifshitz Gilbert dynamic torque equations to this model of the frustrated Mn ions on an $AB$ stacked triangular antiferromagnetic, it is shown that the four principal spin configurations observed in this compound are stabilized. Ho-Mn coupling is found to be a consequence of an unusual trigonal anisotropy term which is responsible for simultaneous Mn spin reorientation and onset of Ho magnetic order. Based on these microscopic cons…
We have studied the magnetic properties of quasi two-dimensional itinerant ferromagnet Fe$_4$GeTe$_2$ as functions of temperature and magnetic field ($B$) with field parallel to the $ab$-plane ($B\|ab$) and $c$-axis ($B\|c$) of the crystal. This van der Waals compound undergoes a continuous paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition below $T_C$ = 270.0 K and a pronounced spin reorientation transition at around $T_{SR}$ $\sim$ 115 K where the easy axis of magnetization changes its direction from in-plane to out-of-plane. The temperature evolution of magnetization in the FM state is highly a…
We investigate the structural and magnetic origins of the unusual ultrafast second-harmonicgeneration (SHG) response of femtosecond-laser-excited nickel oxide (NiO) previously attributed to oscillatory reorientation dynamics of the magnetic structure induced by d-d excitations. Using time-resolved x-ray diffraction from the (3/2 3/2 3/2) magnetic planes, we show that changes in the magnitude of the magnetic structure factor following ultrafast optical excitation are limited to $Δ<F_m>/<F_m>$ = 1.5% in the first 30 ps. An extended investigation of the ultrafast SHG response reveals a strong dep…
Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain materials are known to substantially alter their static and dynamic properties when experiencing an effective transverse staggered field originating from the varying local environment of the individual spins. We present a temperature-, angular- and field-dependent 29Si NMR study of the model compound BaCu2Si2O7. The experimental data are interpreted in terms of the divergent low-temperature transverse susceptibility, predicted by theory for spin chains in coexisting longitudinal and transverse staggered fields. Our analysis first employs a finite-temperature "Density …
Analysis of neutron diffraction, dc magnetization, ac magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and electrical resistivity for DyRuAsO in an applied magnetic field are presented at temperatures near and below those at which the structural distortion (T_S = 25 K) and subsequent magnetic ordering (T_N = 10.5 K) take place. Powder neutron diffraction is used to determine the antiferromagnetic order of Dy moments of magnitude 7.6(1) mu_B in the absence of a magnetic field, and demonstrate the reorientation of the moments into a ferromagnetic configuration upon application of a magnetic field. Dy mag…

Pronounced anisotropy of magnetic properties and complex magnetic order of a new oxi-halide compound Co7(TeO3)4Br6 has been investigated by powder and single crystal neutron diffraction, magnetization and ac susceptibility techniques. Anisotropy of susceptibility extends far into the paramagnetic temperature range. A principal source of anisotropy are anisotropic properties of the involved octahedrally coordinated single Co(2+) ions, as confirmed by angular-overlap-model calculations presented in this work. Incommensurate antiferromagnetic order sets in at TN=34 K. Propagation vector is strong…
