This paper addresses the single-item single-stocking location non-stationary stochastic lot-sizing problem under a reorder point -- order quantity control strategy. The reorder points and order quantities are chosen at the beginning of the planning horizon. The reorder points are allowed to vary with time and we consider order quantities either to be a series of time-dependent constants or a fixed value; this leads to two variants of the policy: the (st,Qt) and the (st,Q) policies, respectively. For both policies, we present stochastic dynamic programs (SDP) to determine optimal policy parameters and introduce mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) heuristics that leverage piecewise-linear approximations of the cost function. Numerical experiments demonstrate that our solution method efficiently computes near-optimal parameters for a broad class of problem instances.
We consider the non-stationary stochastic lot sizing problem with backorder costs and make a cost comparison among different lot-sizing strategies. We initially provide an overview of the strategies and some corresponding solution approaches in the literature. We then compare the cost performances of the lot-sizing strategies on a common test bed while taking into account the added value of realized demand information. The results of this numerical experience enable us to derive novel insights about the cost performance of different stochastic lot-sizing strategies under re-planning with respe…
We show that there exists a family of instances of the lot-sizing problem, such that any branch-and-bound tree that solves them requires an exponential number of nodes, even in the case when the branchings are performed on general split disjunctions.
We study the polyhedral structure of the static probabilistic lot-sizing problem and propose valid inequalities that integrate information from the chance constraint and the binary setup variables. We prove that the proposed inequalities subsume existing inequalities for this problem, and they are facet-defining under certain conditions. In addition, we show that they give the convex hull description of a related stochastic lot-sizing problem. We propose a new formulation that exploits the simple recourse structure, which significantly reduces the number of variables and constraints of the det…
In this work, we use a multiobjective approach to address the lot sizing problem integrated with the cutting stock problem in a paper industry. We analyze the trade-offs and correlations which exist among the costs and their decision variables. Considering some of our computational results, if we decrease the production costs, then we increase the waste of material of the cutting process and vice versa. Thereby we show the importance of the multiobjective approach in allowing multiple answers to the decision maker, using Pareto optimal solutions set. Several tests were performed to check the q…
In a given production planning horizon, the demands may only be comfirmed in part of the whole periods, and the others are uncertain. In this paper, we consider a two-stage stochastic lot-sizing problem with chance-constrained condition in the second stage. In the first stage, the demand is deterministic in each period, while in the second stage, the demands are random variables with finite distribution. We prove the optimality condition of the solutions under modified Wagner-Whitin condition and further develop a new equivalent MIP formulation which can depict the feasible region better. We a…
Production and inventory planning have become crucial and challenging in nowadays competitive industrial and commercial sectors, especially when multiple plants or warehouses are involved. In this context, this paper addresses the complexity of uncapacitated multi-plant lot-sizing problems. We consider a multi-item uncapacitated multi-plant lot-sizing problem with fixed transfer costs and show that two of its very restricted special cases are already NP-hard. Namely, we show that the single-item uncapacitated multi-plant lot-sizing problem with a single period and the multi-item uncapacitated …
The Capacitated Lot-Sizing Problem (CLSP) and its variants are important and challenging optimization problems. Constructive heuristics are known to be the most intuitive and fastest methods for finding good feasible solutions for the CLSPs and therefore are often used as a subroutine in building more sophisticated exact or metaheuristic approaches. Classical constructive heuristics, such as period-by-period heuristics and lot elimination heuristics, are widely used by researchers. This paper introduces four perturbation strategies to the period-by-period and lot elimination heuristics to furt…
We consider a multi-stage stochastic lot-sizing problem with service level constraints and supplier-driven product substitution. A firm has multiple products and it has the option to meet demand from substitutable products at a cost. Considering the uncertainty in future demands, the firm wishes to make ordering decisions in every period such that the probability that all demands can be met in the next period meets or exceeds a minimum service level. We propose a rolling-horizon policy in which a two-stage joint chance-constrained stochastic program is solved to make decisions in each time per…
In this note, we consider the capacitated facility location problem when the transportation costs of the instance satisfy the Monge property. We show that a straightforward dynamic program finds the optimal solution when the demands are polynomially bounded. When demands are not polynomially bounded, we give a fully polynomial-time approximation scheme by adapting an algorithm and analysis of Van Hoesel and Wagelmans.
This paper addresses the two-stocking locations single item non-stationary stochastic lot-sizing problem. The inventory level at each location is reviewed periodically. Items can be reordered and received from a common central warehouse and can also be transshipped laterally from the other location. Lateral transshipment is assumed to be proactive to re-distribute the stock between two stocking locations. Therefore, the order of action in each period is: transshipping (if necessary), reordering (if necessary) and satisfying the demand at each location and each installation. The costs are impos…
In this paper, a framework that addresses the core of the papermaking process is proposed, starting from the production of jumbos and ending with the paper sheets used in daily life. The first phase of the process is modelled according to a lot-sizing problem, where the quantities of jumbos are determined in order to meet the demand of the entire chain. The second phase follows a one-dimensional cutting-stock formulation, where these jumbos are cut into smaller reels of predetermined lengths. Some of these are intended to fulfil a portfolio of orders, while others are used as raw material for …
We consider the capacitated three-level lot-sizing and replenishment problem with a distribution structure (3LSPD-C), recently proposed in the literature. In 3LSPD-C, a single production plant delivers items to the warehouses from where they are distributed to their corresponding retailers. There is a capacity on the total amount the plant can produce in each period, whereas there are no capacities on transportation. The goal of the problem consists in determining an integrated three-echelon production and distribution plan minimizing the total cost, which is composed of fixed costs for produc…
The goal of this paper is to set a constraint programming framework to solve lot-sizing problems. More specifically, we consider a single-item lot-sizing problem with time-varying lower and upper bounds for production and inventory. The cost structure includes time-varying holding costs, unitary production costs and setup costs. We establish a new lower bound for this problem by using a subtle time decomposition. We formulate this NP-hard problem as a global constraint and show that bound consistency can be achieved in pseudo-polynomial time and when not including the costs, in polynomial time…
This paper introduces an integrated lot sizing and scheduling problem inspired from a real-world application in off-the-road tire industry. This problem considers the assignment of different items on parallel machines with complex eligibility constraints within a finite planning horizon. It also considers a large panel of specific constraints such as: backordering, a limited number of setups, upstream resources saturation and customers prioritization. A novel mixed integer formulation is proposed with the objective of optimizing different normalized criteria related to the inventory and servic…
Scheduling multiple products with limited resources and varying demands remain a critical challenge for many industries. This work presents mixed integer programs (MIPs) that solve the Economic Lot Sizing Problem (ELSP) and other Dynamic Lot-Sizing (DLS) models with multiple items. DLS systems are classified, extended and formulated as MIPs. Especially, logical constraints are a key ingredient in succeeding in this endeavour. They were used to formulate the setup/changeover of items in the production line. Minimising the holding, shortage and setup costs is the primary objective for ELSPs. Thi…
Behind the concept of Industry 4.0, there are a number of principles and ideas; one of them is the integration of problems of different decision levels. In this work, we integrate maintenance with planning problems, aiming to take full advantage of the production capacity providing immediate delivery of products to customers and avoiding failures. We propose a hybrid approach for solving a maintenance problem integrated with the lot-sizing and scheduling problems. The approach is based on the concepts of robustness and simheuristics, considering preventive, predictive and corrective maintenanc…
We consider the uncapacitated three-level lot-sizing and replenishment problem with a distribution structure. In this NP-hard problem, a single production plant sends the produced items to replenish warehouses from where they are dispatched to the retailers in order to satisfy their demands over a finite planning horizon. The goal of the problem is to determine an integrated production and distribution plan minimizing the total costs, which comprehends fixed production and transportation setup as well as variable inventory holding costs. We describe new valid inequalities both in the space of …
We consider the multi-item inventory lot-sizing problem with supplier selection. The problem consists of determining an optimal purchasing plan in order to satisfy dynamic deterministic demands for multiple items over a finite planning horizon, considering that multiple suppliers are available to purchase from. As the complexity of the problem was an open question, we show that it is NP-hard. We propose a facility location extended formulation for the problem which can be preprocessed based on the cost structure and describe new valid inequalities in the original space of variables. Furthermor…
This paper addresses the single-item single-stocking location stochastic lot sizing problem under the $(s, S) $ policy. We first present a mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) formulation for determining near-optimal $(s, S)$ policy parameters. To tackle larger instances, we then combine the previously introduced MINLP model and a binary search approach. These models can be reformulated as mixed integer linear programming (MILP) models which can be easily implemented and solved by using off-the-shelf optimisation software. Computational experiments demonstrate that optimality gaps of t…

Managing large-scale systems often involves simultaneously solving thousands of unrelated stochastic optimization problems, each with limited data. Intuition suggests one can decouple these unrelated problems and solve them separately without loss of generality. We propose a novel data-pooling algorithm called Shrunken-SAA that disproves this intuition. In particular, we prove that combining data across problems can outperform decoupling, even when there is no a priori structure linking the problems and data are drawn independently. Our approach does not require strong distributional assumptio…
