We use a Bayesian inference analysis to explore the sensitivity of Taylor expansion parameters of the nuclear equation of state (EOS) to the neutron star dimensionless tidal deformability ($Λ$) on 1 to 2 solar masses neutron stars. A global power law dependence between tidal deformability and compactness parameter (M/R) is verified over this mass region. To avoid superfluous correlations between the expansion parameters, we use a correlation-free EOS model based on a recently published meta-modeling approach. We find that assumptions in the prior distribution strongly influence the constraints on $Λ$. The $Λ$ constraints obtained from the neutron star merger event GW170817 prefer low values of $L_\text{sym}$ and $K_\text{sym}$, for a canonical neutron star with 1.4 solar mass. For neutron star with mass $<1.6$ solar mass, $L_\text{sym}$ and $K_\text{sym}$ are highly correlated with the tidal deformability. For more massive neutron stars, the tidal deformability is more strongly correlated with higher order Taylor expansion parameters.
We investigate the constraints on the mass and radius of neutron stars by considering the tidal deformability in the merge of neutron star binaries. In order to extract the most reliable range of uncertainty from theory, we employ models based upon the Skyrme force and density functional theory and select models that are consistent with empirical data of finite nuclei, measured properties of nuclear matter around the saturation density, and observation of the maximum mass of neutron stars. From the selected models, we calculate the Love number $k_2$, dimensionless tidal deformability $Λ$, and …
In this paper, I have discussed the numerical predictions for the neutron-skin thickness (NST) of various finite nuclei starting from $^{40}$Ca to $^{238}$U using recently developed effective relativistic mean-field models G3 and IOPB-I \cite{G3, IOPB}. The calculated results are compared with the PREX-II data, and the experiment has been done with antiprotons at CERN. Further, I have also calculated the dimensional tidal deformability of a canonical neutron star 1.4$M_\odot$ and compared it with the recent observation of GW1701817.
We systematically study the tidal deformability for neutron and hyperon stars using relativistic mean field (RMF) equations of state (EOSs). The tidal effect plays an important role during the early part of the evolution of compact binaries. Although, the deformability associated with the EOSs has a small correction, it gives a clean gravitational wave signature in binary inspiral. These are characterized by various love numbers kl (l=2, 3, 4), that depend on the EOS of a star for a given mass and radius. The tidal effect of star could be efficiently measured through advanced LIGO detector fro…
Neutron star is the ultimate testing place for the physics of dense nuclear matter. Before the detection of gravitational waves from the merger of binary neutron stars, various nuclear equations of state have been used to estimate the macroscopic properties of neutron stars, such as masses and radii, based on the electromagnetic observations. However, recent observations on the tidal deformability of neutron star from the gravitational waves GW170817 opened a new era of multi-messenger astronomy and astrophysics, and many theoretical works have been extended to estimate the tidal deformability…
Neutron star tidal deformability extracted from gravitational wave data provides a novel probe to the interior neutron star structures and the associated nuclear equation of state (EOS). Instead of the popular composition of nucleons and leptons in neutron stars, we include hyperons and examine the role of hyperons in the tidal deformability and its impact on the symmetry energy in a relativistic mean-field approach with the density-dependent parametrizations. The hyperons are found to have significant impact on the deformability, correlated sensitively with the onset density and fraction of h…

With the recent measurement of GW170817 providing constraints on the tidal deformability of a neutron star, it is very important to understand what features of the equation of state have the biggest effect on it. We therefore study the contribution of the crust to the tidal deformability and the moment of inertia of a neutron star for a variety of well-known equations of state. It is found that the contributions to these quantities from the low density crust are typically quite small and as a result the determination of the tidal deformability provides an important constraint on the equation o…
The role of the symmetry energy and the neutron-matter stiffness on the tidal deformability of a cold nonaccreted neutron star is studied using a set of unified equations of state. Based on the nuclear energy-density functional theory, these equations of state provide a thermodynamically consistent treatment of all regions of the star and were calculated using functionals that were precision fitted to experimental and theoretical nuclear data. Predictions are compared to constraints inferred from the recent detection of the gravitational-wave signal GW170817 from a binary neutron-star merger a…
The neutron star tidal deformability is a critical parameter which determines the pre-merger gravitational-wave signal in a neutron star merger. In this article, we show how neutron star tidal deformabilities behave in the presence of one or two sharp phase transition(s). We characterize how the tidal deformability changes when the properties of these phase transitions are modified in dense matter equation of state (EoS). Sharp phase transitions lead to the smallest possible tidal deformabilities and also induce discontinuities in the relation between tidal deformability and gravitational mass…
The energy radiated in supernova neutrinos is a fundamental quantity that is closely related to the gravitational binding energy of a neutron star. Recently the tidal deformability of neutron stars was constrained by gravitational wave observations. By considering several equations of state, we find a strong correlation between the tidal deformability and neutron star binding energy. We use this correlation to sharpen predictions of the binding energy of neutron stars and the total neutrino energy in supernovae. We find a minimum binding energy for a neutron star formed in a supernova of $\sim…
The historic first detection of the binary neutron star merger GW170817 by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration has set a limit on the gravitational deformability of neutron stars. In contrast, radio observations of PSR J0740+6620 find a very massive neutron star. Tension between the small deformability and the large maximum mass may suggest that the pressure rises rapidly with density and thus the speed of sound in dense matter is likely a large fraction of the speed of light. We use these observations and simple constant sound-speed model equations of state to set a lower bound on the maximum speed …
Constraints set on key parameters of the nuclear matter equation of state (EoS) by the values of the tidal deformability, inferred from GW170817, are examined by using a diverse set of relativistic and non-relativistic mean field models. These models are consistent with bulk properties of finite nuclei as well as with the observed lower bound on the maximum mass of neutron star $\sim 2 ~ {\rm M}_\odot$. The tidal deformability shows a strong correlation with specific linear combinations of the isoscalar and isovector nuclear matter parameters associated with the EoS. Such correlations suggest …
The constraints on tidal deformability $Λ$ of neutron stars are first extracted from GW170817 by LIGO and Virgo Collaborations but the relation between radius $R$ and tidal deformability $Λ$ is still nuder debate. Using an isospin-dependent parameterized equation of state (EOS), we study the relation between $R$ and $Λ$ of neutron stars and its dependence on parameters of symmetry energy $E_{\rm sym}$ and EOS of symmetric nuclear matter $E_0$ when the mass is fixed as $1.4$ $M_\odot$, $1.0$ $M_\odot$, and $1.8$ $M_\odot$, respectively. We find that, though the changes of high order parameters …
The radii and tidal deformabilities of neutron stars are investigated in the framework of relativistic mean-field (RMF) model with different density-dependent behaviors of symmetry energy. To study the effects of symmetry energy on the properties of neutron stars, an $ω$ meson and $ρ$ meson coupling term is included in a popular RMF Lagrangian, i.e. the TM1 parameter set, which is used for the widely used supernova equation of state (EoS) table. The coupling constants relevant to the vector-isovector meson, $ρ$, are refitted by a fixed symmetry energy at subsaturation density and its slope at …
In the present work, we investigate the effects of short-range correlations (SRC) on the dimensionless deformability of the binary neutron system related to the GW170817 event. We implemented phenomenological SRC in a relativistic mean-field model in which the bulk parameters, namely, incompressibility ($K_0$), effective nucleon mass ratio ($m^*$), symmetry energy ($J$) and its slope ($J_0$), are independently controlled. Our results point out that the SRC favor the model to pass through the constraints, established by the LIGO/Virgo Collaboration, on the values of $Λ_{1.4}$ and on the $Λ_1\ti…
Despite their long history and astrophysical importance, some of the key properties of neutron stars are still uncertain. The extreme conditions encountered in their interiors, involving matter of uncertain composition at extreme density and isospin asymmetry, uniquely determine the stars' macroscopic properties within General Relativity. Astrophysical constraints on those macroscopic properties, such as neutron star masses and radii, have long been used to understand the microscopic properties of the matter that forms them. In this article we discuss another astrophysically observable macrosc…
The study of neutron star mergers by the detection of the emitted gravitational waves is one of the most promised tools to study the properties of dense nuclear matter at high densities. It is worth claiming that, at the moment, strong evidence that the temperature of the stars is zero during the last orbits before coalescing does not exist. Contrariwise, there are some theoretical predictions suggesting that the star's temperature might even be a few MeV. According to the main theory, the tides transfer mechanical energy and angular momentum to the star at the expense of the orbit, where fric…

It is worth claiming that, at the moment, strong evidence that the temperature of the stars is zero during the last orbits before coalescing, does not exist. Nevertheless, theoretical studies suggest that the temperature concerning the inspiral phase, could reach even a few MeV. The upper bound of the speed of sound in dense nuclear matter is one of the most interesting but still unsolved problems in Nuclear Physics. Theoretical studies in connection with recent observational data of isolated neutron stars as well as binary neutron stars systems offer an excellent opportunity to shed light on this problem. In the present work, we suggest a method to directly relate the measured tidal deformability (polarizability) of binary neutron stars system (before merger) to the maximum neutron star mass scenario and possible upper bound on the speed of sound. This method is base…
Motivated by the historical detection of gravitational waves from GW170817, the neutron star and the neutron drop, i.e., a certain number of neutrons confined in an external field, are systematically investigated by ab initio calculations as well as the nonrelativistic and relativistic state-of-art density functional theories. Strong correlations are found among the neutron star tidal deformability, the neutron star radius, the root-mean-square radii of neutron drops, and the symmetry energies of nuclear matter at supra-saturation densities. From these correlations and the upper limit on the t…
A principal goal of gravitational-wave astronomy is to constrain the neutron star equation of state (EOS) by measuring the tidal deformability of neutron stars. The tidally induced departure of the waveform from that of point-particle (or spinless binary black hole (BBH)) increases with the stiffness of the EOS. We show that causality (the requirement that the speed of sound is less than the speed of light for a perfect fluid satisfying a one-parameter equation of state) places an upper bound on tidal deformability as a function of mass. Like the upper mass limit, the limit on deformabity is o…

Applying an equation of state (EOS) with its symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) contribution and low-density symmetry energy $E_{sym}(ρ)$ constrained by heavy-ion reaction data, we calculate the dimensionless tidal deformability $Λ$ of neutron stars in coalescing binary systems. Corresponding to the partially constrained EOS that previously predicted a radius of 11.5 km $\leq R_{1.4} \leq$ 13.6 km for canonical neutron-star configurations, $Λ$ is found to be in the range of 292 $\leqΛ_{1.4}\leq$ 680, consistent with the very recent observation of the GW170817 event. We investigate the effect of th…
Because all neutron stars share a common equation of state, tidal deformability constraints from the compact binary coalescence GW170817 have implications for the properties of neutron stars in other systems. Using equation-of-state insensitive relations between macroscopic observables like moment of inertia ($I$), tidal deformability ($Λ$) and stellar compactness, we derive constraints on these properties as a function of neutron-star mass based on the LIGO-Virgo collaboration's canonical deformability measurement, $Λ_{1.4} = 190^{+390}_{-120}$. Specific estimates of $Λ$, $I$, dimensionless s…
The concept of boson stars (BSs) was first introduced by Kaup and Ruffini-Bonazzola in the 1960s. Following this idea, we investigate an effect of self-interacting asymmetric bosonic dark matter (DM) according to Colpi et al. model for BSs (1986) on different observable properties of neutron stars (NSs). In this paper, the bosonic DM and baryonic matter (BM) are mixed together and interact only through gravitational force. The presence of DM as a core of a compact star or as an extended halo around it is examined by applying different boson masses and DM fractions for a fixed coupling constant…
We analyze how the crust equation of state affects several neutron star properties and how it impacts on possible constraints inferred from astrophysical observations. Using three distinct crusts, we generate three sets of model-independent equations of state describing stellar matter from a Taylor expansion around saturation density. The equations of state are thermodynamically consistent, causal, and compatible with astrophysical observations. The relations between the tidal deformability $Λ$ and compactness $C$, Love number $k_2$ and radius of neutron star with mass $M$ are studied, and the…
Neutron star (NS) is a unique astronomical compact object where the four fundamental interactions have been revealed from the observation and studied in different ways. While the macroscopic properties of NS like mass and radius can be determined within the General Relativity using a realistic equation of state (EOS) of NS matter, such an EOS is usually generated by a nuclear structure model like, e.g., the nuclear mean-field approach to asymmetric nuclear matter. Given the radius of NS extended to above 10 km and its mass up to twice the solar mass, NS is expected to be tidally deformed when …
The agreement of the nuclear equation of state (EoS) deduced from the GW170817 based tidal deformability with the one obtained from empirical data on microscopic nuclei is examined. It is found that suitably chosen experimental data on isoscalar and isovector modes of nuclear excitations together with the observed maximum neutron star mass constrain the EoS which displays a very good congruence with the GW170817 inspired one. The giant resonances in nuclei are found to be instrumental in limiting the tidal deformability parameter and the radius of neutron star in somewhat narrower bounds. At t…
{\it Background.} We investigate possible correlations between neutron star observables and properties of atomic nuclei. Particularly, we explore how the tidal deformability of a 1.4 solar mass neutron star, $M_{1.4}$, and the neutron skin thickness of ${^{48}}$Ca and ${^{208}}$Pb are related to the stellar radius and the stiffness of the symmetry energy. {\it Methods.} We examine a large set of nuclear equations of state based on phenomenological models (Skyrme, NLWM, DDM) and {\it ab-initio} theoretical methods (BBG, Dirac-Brueckner, Variational, Quantum Monte Carlo). {\it Results.} We find …
We revisit the lower bound on binary tidal deformability tilde{Lambda} imposed by a luminous kilonova/macronova, AT 2017gfo, by numerical-relativity simulations of models that are consistent with gravitational waves from the binary neutron star merger GW170817. Contrary to the claim made in the literature, we find that binaries with tilde{Lambda}<~400 can explain the luminosity of AT 2017gfo, as long as moderate mass ejection from the remnant is assumed as had been done in previous work. The reason is that the maximum mass of a neutron star is not strongly correlated with the tidal deformabili…
This work extends our previous study of isospin symmetric quarkyonic matter to quarkyonic neutron matter which might be relevant to the inner cores of neutron stars. The vector-isovector $ρ$ mesons are introduced to the model mainly to account for isospin density interactions, just like $ω$ meson for baryon density interactions. The modified Lagrangian still preserves approximate chiral symmetry which could be significantly broken at lower density. And new free parameters are fixed by adopting the experimental constraints on the symmetry energy and its slope at saturation density. Eventually, …
Background: The nuclear symmetry energy $E_{sym}(ρ)$ encodes information about the energy necessary to make nuclear systems more neutron-rich. While its slope parameter L at the saturation density $ρ_0$ of nuclear matter has been relatively well constrained by recent astrophysical observations and terrestrial nuclear experiments, its curvature $K_{\rm{sym}}$ characterizing the $E_{sym}(ρ)$ around $2ρ_0$ remains largely unconstrained. Over 520 calculations for $E_{sym}(ρ)$ using various nuclear theories and interactions in the literature have predicted several significantly different $K_{\rm{sy…
We use gravitational wave (GW) and electromagnetic (EM) observations of GW170817 to constrain the extent of pressure anisotropy in it. While it is quite likely that the pressure inside a neutron star is mostly isotropic, certain physical processes or characteristics, such as phase transitions in nuclear matter or the presence of strong magnetic fields, can introduce pressure anisotropy. In this work, we show that anisotropic pressure in neutron stars can reduce their tidal deformability substantially. For the anisotropy-pressure model of Bowers and Liang and a couple of relativistic EOSs -- DD…
Over the last few years, the detection of gravitational waves from binary neutron star systems has rekindled our hopes for a deeper understanding of the unknown nature of ultradense matter. In particular, gravitational wave constraints on the tidal deformability of a neutron star can be translated into constraints on several neutron star properties using a set of universal relations. Apart from binary neutron star mergers, supernova explosions are also important candidates for the detection of multimessenger signals. Such observations may allow us to impose significant constraints on the bindi…
We study an impact of asymmetric fermionic dark matter on neutron star properties, including tidal deformability, mass, radius, etc. We present the conditions at which dark matter particles tend to form a compact structure in a core of the star or create an extended halo around it. We show that compact core of dark matter leads to a decrease of the total gravitational mass and tidal deformability compared to a pure baryonic star, while presence of a dark matter halo increases those observable quantities. By imposing an existing astrophysical and gravitational wave constraints set by LIGO/Virgo…
The chi-squared based covariance approach allows one to estimate the correlations among desired observables related to nuclear matter directly from a set of fit data without taking recourse to the distributions of the nuclear matter parameters (NMPs). Such an approach is applied to study the correlations of tidal deformability of neutron star with the slope and the curvature parameters of nuclear symmetry energy governed by an extensive set of fit data on the finite nuclei together with the maximum mass of the neutron star. The knowledge of the distributions of NMPs consistent with the fit dat…
Similar to the compactness parameter ($β=M/R$), the gravitational binding energy (GBE) is also a characteristic parameter which can reflect the internal structure of a neutron star and thus can be used to expressing the universal relations. Scaling by the stellar mass, this investigation demonstrates a perfect universal relation between the GBE and the moment of inertia, where both of the normal neutron stars and the quark stars satisfy the same universal relation. Moreover, a fine empirical relation between the GBE and the tidal deformability is proposed, where the difference of the relations…
We put constraints on the secondary component of GW190814 by analyzing the observational data of the event. The relativistic mean-field models are used to calculate the mass-radius profile and tidal deformability of the compact object, considering it as a massive neutron star with the presence of dark matter particles inside it. With the increase of dark matter percentage, the maximum mass, radius, and tidal deformability of the neutron star decreases. We observe that the predicted properties are well consistent with GW190814 observational data, suggesting the possibility of a dark matter admi…
We confront admixture of dark matter inside neutron star using gravitational wave constraints coming from binary neutron star merger. We consider a relativistic mean field model including $σ-ω-ρ$ meson interaction with NL3 parameterization. We study fermionic dark matter interacting with nucleonic matter via Higgs portal mechanism. We show that admixture of dark matter inside the neutron star soften the equation state and lower the value of tidal deformability. Gravitational wave GW170817 observation puts an upper bound on tidal deformability of a binary neutron star with low spin prior at 90\…
We examine the influence of the density dependence of the symmetry energy on several properties of neutron stars. In particular, we study the constraints set on the nuclear matter equation of state by the values of the tidal deformability and neutron star radius, using a diverse set of relativistic and non-relativistic mean field models consistent with bulk properties of finite nuclei and the observed lower bound on the maximum mass of neutron star. The tidal deformability and radius show a strong correlation with specific linear combinations of the isoscalar and isovector nuclear matter param…

We confront observational data from gravitational wave event GW170817 with microscopic modeling of the cold neutron star equation of state. We develop and employ a Bayesian statistical framework that enables us to implement constraints on the equation of state from laboratory measurements of nuclei and state-of-the-art chiral effective field theory methods. The energy density functionals constructed from the posterior probability distributions are then used to compute consistently the neutron star equation of state from the outer crust to the inner core, assuming a composition consisting of pr…
We investigate properties of nuclear matter and examine possible correlations with neutron star observables for a set of microscopic nuclear equations of state derived within the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock formalism employing compatible three-body forces. We find good candidates for a realistic nuclear EOS up to high density and confirm strong correlations between neutron star radius, tidal deformability, and the pressure of betastable matter. No correlations are found with the saturation properties of nuclear matter.
Matter state inside neutron stars is an exciting problem in astrophysics, nuclear physics and particle physics. The equation of state (EOS) of neutron stars plays a crucial role in the present multimessenger astronomy, especially after the event of GW170817. We propose a new neutron star EOS "QMF18" from the quark level, which describes well robust observational constraints from free-space nucleon, nuclear matter saturation, heavy pulsar measurements and the tidal deformability of the very recent GW170817 observation. For this purpose, we employ the quark-mean-field (QMF) model, allowing one t…
We derive an equation of state for magnetized charge neutral nuclear matter relevant for neutron star structure. The calculations are performed within an effective chiral model based on generalization of sigma model with nonlinear self interactions of the sigma mesons along with vector mesons and a $ρ-σ$ cross-coupling term. The effective chiral model is extended by introducing the contributions of strong magnetic field on the charged particles of the model. The contributions arising from the effects of magnetic field on the Dirac sea of charged baryons are also included. The resulting equatio…
The LIGO/Virgo detection of gravitational waves originating from a neutron-star merger, GW170817, has recently provided new stringent limits on the tidal deformabilities of the stars involved in the collision. Combining this measurement with the existence of two-solar-mass stars, we generate a generic family of neutron-star-matter Equations of State (EoSs) that interpolate between state-of-the-art theoretical results at low and high baryon density. Comparing the results to ones obtained without the tidal-deformability constraint, we witness a dramatic reduction in the family of allowed EoSs. B…
The detection of gravitational waves from GW170817 has provided a new opportunity to constrain the equation of state (EOS) of neutron stars. In this article, we investigate the possible existence of quarks inside the neutron star core in the context of GW170817. The nucleon phase is treated within the relativistic nuclear mean-field approach where we have employed a fully comprehensive set of available models, and the quark phase is described in the Bag model. We show that the nucleonic EOSs which are inconsistent with the tidal deformability bound become consistent when phase transition to qu…
