We construct an example of a 1$d$ quasiperiodically driven spin chain whose edge states can coherently store quantum information, protected by a combination of localization, dynamics, and topology. Unlike analogous behavior in static and periodically driven (Floquet) spin chains, this model does not rely upon microscopic symmetry protection: Instead, the edge states are protected purely by emergent dynamical symmetries. We explore the dynamical signatures of this Emergent Dynamical Symmetry-Protected Topological (EDSPT) order through exact numerics, time evolving block decimation, and analytic high-frequency expansion, finding evidence that the EDSPT is a stable dynamical phase protected by bulk many-body localization up to (at least) stretched-exponentially long time scales, and possibly beyond. We argue that EDSPTs are special to the quasiperiodically driven setting, and cannot arise in Floquet systems. Moreover, we find evidence of a new type of boundary criticality, in which the edge spin dynamics transition from quasiperiodic to chaotic, leading to bulk thermalization.
We show how a large family of interacting nonequilibrium phases of matter can arise from the presence of multiple time-translation symmetries, which occur by quasiperiodically driving an isolated quantum many-body system with two or more incommensurate frequencies. These phases are fundamentally different from those realizable in time-independent or periodically-driven (Floquet) settings. Focusing on high-frequency drives with smooth time-dependence, we rigorously establish general conditions for which these phases are stable in a parametrically long-lived `preheating' regime. We develop a for…
Nascent platforms for programmable quantum simulation offer unprecedented access to new regimes of far-from-equilibrium quantum many-body dynamics in (approximately) isolated systems. Here, achieving precise control over quantum many-body entanglement is an essential task for quantum sensing and computation. Extensive theoretical work suggests that these capabilities can enable dynamical phases and critical phenomena that exhibit topologically-robust methods to create, protect, and manipulate quantum entanglement that self-correct against large classes of errors. However, to date, experimental…
Sufficient disorder is believed to localize static and periodically-driven interacting chains. With quasiperiodic driving by $D$ incommensurate tones, the fate of this many-body localization (MBL) is unknown. We argue that randomly disordered MBL exists for $D=2$, but not for $D\geq 3$. Specifically, a putative two-tone driven MBL chain is neither destabilized by thermal avalanches seeded by rare thermal regions, nor by the proliferation of long-range many-body resonances. For $D\geq 3$, however, sufficiently large thermal regions have continuous local spectra and slowly thermalize the entire …

We report the discovery of flatten Bloch bands with nontrivial topological numbers in a quasi-one-dimensional sawtooth chain. We present the nearly flat-band with a obvious gap and nonzero Chern number of the modulated sawtooth chain by tuning hoppings and modulation. With the increasing of the strength of the modulation, the system undergos a series of topological phase transitions in the absence of interaction. By adding interaction to the model, we present exact diagonalization results for the system at $1/3$ filling and some interesting connections with fraction quantum Hall states: topolo…
One-dimensional gapped spin chains with symmetry PSU(N) = SU(N)/Z_N are known to possess N different topological phases. In this paper, we introduce a non-local string order parameter which characterizes each of these N phases unambiguously. Numerics confirm that our order parameter allows to extract a quantized topological invariant from a given non-degenerate gapped ground state wave function. Discontinuous jumps in the discrete topological order that arise when varying physical couplings in the Hamiltonian may be used to detect quantum phase transitions between different topological phases.
An attempt is made to quantum simulate the topological classification, such as winding number, geometric phase and symmetry properties for a quantum simulated Kitaev chain. We find, α (ratio between the spin-orbit coupling and magnetic field) and the range of momentum space of consideration, which plays a crucial role for the topological classification. We show explicitly that the topological quantum phase transition does not occurs at k = 0 limit for the quantum simulated Kitaev chain. We observe that the quasi-particle mass of the Majorana mode plays the significant role in topological quant…
We unveil nontrivial topological properties of zero-temperature magnetization plateau states in periodically modulated quantum spin chains under a uniform magnetic field. As positions of plateaus are uniquely determined by the modulation period of exchange couplings, we find that the topologically nontrivial plateau state can be characterized by a nonzero integer Chern number and has nontrivial edge excitations. Our study clarifies the topological origin of the well-known phenomena of quantized magnetization plateaus in one-dimensional quantum spin systems and relates the plateau state to the …
We characterize several phases of gapped spin systems by local order parameters defined by quantized Berry phases. This characterization is topologically stable against any small perturbation as long as the energy gap remains finite. The models we pick up are $S=1,2$ dimerized Heisenberg chains and S=2 Heisenberg chains with uniaxial single-ion-type anisotropy. Analytically we also evaluate the topological local order parameters for the generalized Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) model. The relation between the present Berry phases and the fractionalization in the integer spin chains are di…
We study a chain of ferromagnetic nano-particles or ferromagnetic molecule/atoms on a substrate of fully gapped superconductors. We find that under quite realistic conditions, the fermion-number-parity symmetry $Z_2^f$ can spontaneously break. In other words, such a chain can realize a 1+1D fermionic topologically ordered state and the corresponding two-fold topological degeneracy on an open chain. Such a topological degeneracy becomes the so called Majorana zero mode in the non-interacting limit. More specifically, we find that $Z_2^f$ symmetry breaking or fermionic 1+1D topological order can…
Non-local orders, entanglement entropy, and quantum fidelity are investigated in an infinite-size bond-alternating Ising chain with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction by employing the infinite matrix product state representation with the infinite time evolving block decimation method. Directly computing two distinct types of finite string correlations for very large lattice distances, in contrast to an extrapolated extreme value for finite size chains, reveals two topologically ordered phases. As the bond alternation varies, a topological quantum phase transition with continuously variable …
We numerically explore $\mathbb Z_2$-symmetric random interacting Ising-Majorana chains at high energy. A very rich phase diagram emerges with two topologically distinct many-body localization (MBL) regimes separated by a much broader thermal phase than previously found. This is a striking consequence of the avalanche theory. We further find MBL spin-glass order always associated to a many-body spectral pairing, presumably signaling a strong zero mode operator which opens fascinating perspectives for MBL-protected topological qubits.
The topological classification of a series of frustration-induced spin-gap phases in the spin-1/2 ferromagnetic--antiferromagnetic alternating Heisenberg chain with next-nearest-neighbour interaction reported in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 82, 064703 (2013) is confirmed using two kinds of entanglement spectra defined by different divisions of the whole chain. For the numerical calculation, the iDMRG method is used. The results are consistent with the valence bond solid picture proposed in the previous paper.
Symmetry protected topological phases of one-dimensional spin systems have been classified using group cohomology. In this paper, we revisit this problem for general spin chains which are invariant under a continuous on-site symmetry group G. We evaluate the relevant cohomology groups and find that the topological phases are in one-to-one correspondence with the elements of the fundamental group of G if G is compact, simple and connected and if no additional symmetries are imposed. For spin chains with symmetry PSU(N)=SU(N)/Z_N our analysis implies the existence of N distinct topological phase…
We provide a new perspective on fracton topological phases, a class of three-dimensional topologically ordered phases with unconventional fractionalized excitations that are either completely immobile or only mobile along particular lines or planes. We demonstrate that a wide range of these fracton phases can be constructed by strongly coupling mutually intersecting spin chains and explain via a concrete example how such a coupled-spin-chain construction illuminates the generic properties of a fracton phase. In particular, we describe a systematic translation from each coupled-spin-chain const…
We describe a construction of topological orders from coupled lower dimensional symmetry-protected topological orders, which is closely related to gauging a subsystem symmetry. Our construction yields both conventional topological orders and exotic fracton topological orders of type-I and type-II. In particular, we find a coupled spin chain construction of Haah's cubic code, and a coupled layer construction of Yoshida's fractal spin liquids.
We discuss generalizations of quantum spin Hamiltonians using anyonic degrees of freedom. The simplest model for interacting anyons energetically favors neighboring anyons to fuse into the trivial (`identity') channel, similar to the quantum Heisenberg model favoring neighboring spins to form spin singlets. Numerical simulations of a chain of Fibonacci anyons show that the model is critical with a dynamical critical exponent z=1, and described by a two-dimensional conformal field theory with central charge c=7/10. An exact mapping of the anyonic chain onto the two-dimensional tricritical Ising…
We elaborate on the topological order in the Kitaev chain, a p-wave superconductor with nearest-neighbor pairing amplitude equal to the hopping term Delta=t, and chemical potential mu=0. In particular, we write out the explicit eigenstates of the open chain in terms of fermion operators, and show that the states as well as their energy eigenvalues are formally equivalent to those of an Ising chain. The models are physically different, as the topological order in the Kitaev chain corresponds to conventional order in the Ising model.
In this general article, we map the one-dimensional transverse field quantum Ising model of ferromagnetism to Kitaev's one-dimensional p-wave superconductor, which has its application in fault-tolerant topological quantum computing. Mapping Pauli's spin operators of transverse Ising chain to spinless fermionic creation and annihilation operators by Inverse Jordan-Wigner transformation leads to a Hamiltonian form closely related to Kitaev Chain, which exhibits topological phase transition where phases are characterized by different topological invariant that changes discontinuously at the trans…
The one dimensional closed interacting Kitaev chain and the dimerized version are studied. The topological invariants in terms of Green's function are calculated by the density matrix renormalization group method and the exact diagonalization method. For the interacting Kitaev chain, we point out that the calculation of topological invariant in the charge density wave phase must consider the dimerized configuration of the ground states. The variation of topological invariant are attributed to the poles of eigenvalues of the zero-frequency Green's functions. For the interacting dimerized Kitaev…
Fibonacci anyon, an exotic quasi-particle excitation, plays a pivotal role in realization of a quantum computer. Starting from a $SU(2)_4$ topological phase, in this paper we demonstrate a way to construct a Fibonacci topological phase which has only one non-trivial excitation described by the Fibonacci anyon. We show that arrays of anyonic chains created by excitations of the $SU(2)_4$ phase leads to the Fibonacci phase. We further demonstrate that our theoretical propositions can be extended to other topological phases.
We study the combined effect of interactions and disorder on topological order in one dimension. To this end we consider a generalized Kitaev chain including fermion-fermion interactions and disorder in the chemical potential. We determine the phase diagram by performing density-matrix renormalization group calculations on the corresponding spin-1/2 chain. We find that moderate disorder or repulsive interactions individually stabilize the topological order, which remains valid for their combined effect. However, both repulsive and attractive interactions lead to a suppression of the topologica…
Topological excitations in many-body systems are one of the paradigmatic cornerstones of modern condensed matter physics. In particular, parafermions are elusive fractional excitations potentially emerging in fractional quantum Hall-superconductor junctions, and represent one of the major milestones in fractional quantum matter. Here, by using a combination of tensor network and kernel polynomial techniques, we demonstrate the emergence of zero modes and finite energy excitations in many-body parafermion chains. We show the appearance of zero energy modes in the many-body spectral function at …
We examine the effective field theory of the Bethe ansatz integrable Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin chains. It shows that the quantum critical theories for the integer spin-S chains should be characterized by the SO(3)level-S Wess-Zumino-Witten model, and classified by the third cohomology group $H^{3}(SO(3),Z)=Z$. Depending on the parity of spin S, this integer classification is further divided into two distinct universality classes, which are associated with two completely different conformal field theories: the even-S chains have gapless bosonic excitations and the odd-S chains have both…
Boundary conformal field theory is brought to bear on the study of topological insulating phases of non-abelian anyonic chains. These topologically non-trivial phases display protected anyonic end modes. We consider antiferromagnetically coupled spin-1/2 su(2)$_k$ chains at any level $k$, focusing on the most prominent examples; the case $k = 2$ describes Ising anyons (equivalent to Majorana fermions) and $k = 3$ corresponds to Fibonacci anyons. We prove that the braiding of these emergent anyons exhibits the same braiding behavior as the physical quasiparticles. These results suggest a `solid…
We construct a model Hamiltonian for S = 2 spin chain, where a variable parameter $α$ is introduced. The edge spin is S = 1 for $α= 0$, and S = 3/2 for $α= 1$. Due to the topological distinction of the edge states, these two phases must be separated by one or several topological quantum phase transitions. We investigate the nature of the quantum phase transition by DMRG calculation, and propose a phase diagram for this model.
According to the general classification of topological insulators, there exist one-dimensional chirally (sublattice) symmetric systems that can support any number of topological phases. We introduce a zigzag fermion chain with spin-orbit coupling in magnetic field and identify three distinct topological phases. Zero-mode excitations, localized at the phase boundaries, are fractionalized: two of the phase boundaries support $\pm e/2$ charge states while one of the boundaries support $\pm e$ and neutral excitations. In addition, a finite chain exhibits $\pm e/2$ edge states for two of the three …
We analyze a tight binding model of two coupled chains with strongly interacting fermions. Depending on the parameter $w$, the many body lowest energy band consists of either single particles or bound pairs. A topological quantum pump can be created by periodically varying the coupling strengths under adiabatic conditions. We numerically show that the single particles and bound pairs are pumped in opposite directions along topologically non-trivial paths. The exact quantization of the pumped charge can be expressed by a (many body) Chern number.
The manifestations of topological effects in finite antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains is examined by density matrix renormalization group technique in this paper. We find that difference between integer and half-integer spin chains shows up in ground state energy per site when length of spin chain is longer than $\simξ$, where $ξ\sim\exp(πS)$ is a spin-spin correlation length, for spin magnitude S up to 5/2. For open chains with spin magnitudes $S=5/2$ to S=5, we verify that end states with fractional spin quantum numbers $S'$ exist and are visible even when the chain length is much smaller …
Using a combination of the mean-field Bogoliubov deGennes (BdG) approach and the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) method, we discover first order topological transitions between topological superconducting and trivial insulating phases in a sawtooth lattice of inter-site attractive fermions. Topological characterization of different phases is achieved in terms of winding numbers, Majorana edge modes and entanglement spectra. By studying the effect of disorder on the first order topological phase transitions, we establish the disorder-induced topological phase coexistence as a mechan…
We present a functional renormalization group approach to interacting topological Green function invariants with a focus on the nature of transitions. The method is applied to chiral symmetric fermion chains in the Mott limit that can be driven into a Haldane phase. We explicitly show that the transition to this phase is accompanied by a zero of the fermion Green function. Our results for the phase boundary are quantitatively benchmarked against DMRG data.
We use linked-cluster expansions to analyze the quantum phase transitions between symmetry unbroken trivial and topological Haldane phases in two different spin-one chains. The first model is the spin-one Heisenberg chain in the presence of a single-ion anisotropy while the second one is the dimerized spin-one Heisenberg chain. For both models we determine the ground-state energy and the one-particle gap inside the non-topological phase as a high-order series using perturbative continuous unitary transformations. Extrapolations of the gap series are applied to locate the quantum critical point…
We consider the classification problem of symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases on quantum spin systems. SPT phases are gapped short-range-entangled quantum phases with a symmetry $G$. We explain that in one and two-dimensional quantum spin systems, there are $H^{2}(G, U(1))$/ $H^{3}(G, U(1))$-valued invariant, confirming a physicists conjecture.
We analyse a spin-1/2 chain with two-spin interactions which shown to exactly solvable by Lieb, Schultz and Mattis. We show that the model can be viewed as a generalised Kitaev model that is analytically solvable for all defect sectors. We present an alternate proof that the defect free sector is the ground state, which is valid for a larger parameter range. We show that the defect sectors have degenerate ground states corresponding to unpaired Majorana fermion modes and that the degeneracy is topologically protected against disorder in the spin-spin couplings. The unpaired Majorana fermions c…
Chains of magnetic adatoms on superconductors have been discussed as promising systems for realizing Majorana end states. Here, we show that dilute Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) chains are also a versatile platform for quantum magnetism and correlated electron dynamics, with widely adjustable spin values and couplings. Focusing on subgap excitations, we derive an extended $t-J$ model for dilute quantum YSR chains and use it to study the phase diagram as well as tunneling spectra. We explore the implications of quantum magnetism for the formation of a topological superconducting phase, contrasting it …
We show that there is a topological (Berry phase) term in the non-linear $σ$ model description of the SO(5) spin chain. It distinguishes the linear and projective representations of the SO(5) symmetry group, in exact analogy to the well-known $θ$-term of the SO(3) spin chain. The presence of the topological term is due to the fact that $π_2(\frac{SO(5)}{SO(3)\times SO(2)})= \mathbb{Z}$. We discuss the implication of our results on the spectra of the SO(5) spin chain, and connect it with a recent solvable SO(5) spin model which exhibits valence bond solid ground state and edge degeneracy.
The nature of symmetry-protected topological phases of Heisenberg spin chains in totally symmetric representations of rank N of the SU(N) group is investigated through a Majorana fermion study starting from an integrable point. The latter approach generalizes the one pioneered by Tsvelik [A. M. Tsvelik, Phys. Rev. B 42, 10 499 (1990)] to describe the low-energy properties of the Haldane phase of the spin-1 Heisenberg chain from three massive Majorana fermions. We find for all N the emergence of a non-degenerate gapped phase with edge states whose topological protection depends on the parity of…
We study analytically a modified dimerized Kitaev chain model under both periodic and open boundary conditions and determine its phase diagram by calculating the topological number and edge correlation functions of Majorana fermions. We explicitly give analytical solutions for eigenstates of the model under open boundary conditions, which permit us to calculate two introduced edge correlation functions of Majorana fermions analytically. Our results indicate that the two edge correlation functions can be used to characterize the trivial, Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-like topological and topological sup…
Recent experiments have shown the signatures of Majorana bound states at the ends of magnetic chains deposited on a superconducting substrate. Here, we employ first principles calculations to directly investigate the topological properties of $3d$ transition metal nanochains (i.e., Mn, Cr, Fe and Co). In contrast to the previous studies [Nadj-Perge et al. Science 346, 602 (2014) and Ruby et al. Nano Lett. 17, 4473 (2017)], we found the exact tight binding models in the Wannier orbital basis for the isolated chains as well as for the surface--deposited wires. Based on these models, we calculate…
We study the dynamical spin excitations of the one-dimensional $S=1$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with single-ion anisotropy by using quantum Monte Carlo simulations and stochastic analytic continuation of imaginary-time correlation function. Using the transverse dynamic spin structure factor, we observe the quantum phase transition with a critical point between the topological Haldane gapped phase and the trivial phase. At the quantum critical point, we find a broad continuum characterized by the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid similar to a $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain. We furth…
Motivated by the three-dimensional topological field theory / two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) correspondence, we study a broad class of one-dimensional quantum mechanical models, known as anyonic chains, that can give rise to an enormously rich (and largely unexplored) space of two-dimensional critical theories in the thermodynamic limit. One remarkable feature of these systems is the appearance of non-local microscopic "topological symmetries" that descend to topological defects of the resulting CFTs. We derive various model-independent properties of these theories and of this to…
We study one-component fermions in chain lattices with proximity-induced superconducting gap and interparticle short-range interaction, capable of hosting Majorana fermions. By systematically tracking various physical quantities, we show that topological states and topological phase transitions in the system can be identified by multiple signatures in thermodynamic quantities and pair-condensate properties, in good agreement with the known signatures in the ground-state energy and entanglement spectrum. We find the disappearance of the topological phase in a largely attractive regime, in which…
Electronic states associated with a chain of magnetic adatoms on the surface of an ordinary s- wave superconductor have been shown theoretically to form a one dimensional topological phase with unpaired Majorana fermions bound to its ends. In a simple 1D effective model the system exhibits an interesting self-organization property: the pitch of the spiral formed by the adatom magnetic moments tends to adjust itself so that electronically the chain remains in the topological phase whenever such a state is physically accessible. Here we examine the physics underlying this self-organization prope…
For the Haldane phase, the magnetic field usually tends to break the symmetry and drives the system into a topologically trivial phase. Here, we report a novel reentrance of the Haldane phase at zero temperature in the spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on sawtooth chain. A partial Haldane phase is induced by the magnetic field, which is the combination of the Haldane state in one sublattice and a ferromagnetically ordered state in the other sublattice. Such a partial topological order is a result of the zero-temperature entropy due to quantum fluctuations caused by geometrical frustrat…
What distinguishes trivial from topological superluids in interacting many-body systems where the number of particles is conserved? Building on a class of integrable pairing Hamiltonians, we present a number-conserving, interacting variation of the Kitaev model, the Richardson-Gaudin-Kitaev chain, that remains exactly solvable for periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions. Our model allows us to identify fermionic parity switches that distinctively characterize topological superconductivity in interacting many-body systems. Although the Majorana zero-modes in this model have only a power-l…
