We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the spinful extended Haldane-Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice using an exact-diagonalization, mean-field variational approach, and further complement it with the infinite density matrix renormalization group, applied to an infinite honeycomb cylinder. This model, governed by both on-site and nearest-neighbor interactions, can result in two types of insulators with finite local order parameters, either with spin or charge ordering. Moreover, a third one, a topologically nontrivial insulator with nonlocal order, is also manifest. We test expectations of previous analyses in spinless versions asserting that once a local order parameter is formed, the topological characteristics of the ground state, associated with a finite Chern number, are no longer present, resulting in a topologically trivial wave function. Our study confirms this overall picture, and highlights how finite-size effects may result in misleading conclusions on the coexistence of finite local order parameters and nontrivial topology in this model.
We demonstrate the existence of an insulating phase in the three-legged Hubbard ladder at two-thirds filling. In this phase chargons are bound because the physics within a unit cell favors the formation of triplets. The resultant moments lead to a ground state in the Haldane phase, a symmetry protected topological state of matter. In this purely fermionic model, reflection is protecting but time reversal and dihedral symmetries are not, in contrast to spin models.
We study the phase diagram of the interacting spin-$1/2$ Haldane model with chiral phase $ϕ= π/2$ at half-filling. Both on-site and long-range Coulomb repulsive interactions (Haldane-Hubbard-Coulomb model) are considered. The problem with on-site interaction $U$ alone was addressed in the past by a variety of approximate and finite size methods that produced results in disagreement with each other both quantitatively and qualitatively. Here we employ the Diagrammatic Monte Carlo technique to accurately locate phase transition points to the topologically nontrivial phases in the $(Δ, U)$-plane,…
We study the interplay of topological band structure and conventional magnetic long-range order in spinful Haldane model with onsite repulsive interaction. Using the dynamical cluster approximation with clusters of up to 24 sites we find evidence of a first order phase transition from a Chern insulator at weak coupling to a topologically trivial antiferromagnetic insulator at strong coupling. These results call into question a previously found intermediate state with coexisting topological character and antiferromagnetic long-range order. Experimentally measurable signatures of the first order…
By employing the exact-diagonalization method, we revisit the ground-state phase diagram of the Haldane-Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice with staggered sublattice potentials. The phase diagram includes the band insulator, Mott insulator, and two Chern insulator phases with Chern numbers C=2 and C=1, respectively. The character of transitions between different phases is studied by analyzing the lower-lying energy levels, excitation gaps, structure factors, and fidelity metric. We find that the C=1 phase can be continuously deformed into the C=2 phase without a gap closure in the periodic …
We elaborate the first theoretical realization of two dimensional itinerant topological magnons, based on the quarter filled Haldane-Hubbard model with a nearly-flat electron band. By using the exact diagonalization method with a projection onto this band, we obtain the spin wave excitations over the itinerant ferromagnetic ground state. In the flatband limit, the excitation exhibits similar dispersion to the free electron band with Dirac magnons. The nonflatness of the electron band opens a topological gap at Dirac points and leads to an acoustic magnon band with a nonzero Chern number. We fu…
In the context of many-body interacting systems described by a topological Hamiltonian, we investigate the robustness of the Chern number with respect to different sources of error in the self-energy. In particular, we analyze the importance of non-local (momentum dependent) vs. local contributions to the self-energy and show that the local self-energy provides a qualitative description of the topological phase diagrams of many-body interacting systems, whereas the explicit momentum-dependence constitutes a correction to the exact location of the phase transition. For the latter, we propose a …
In the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with on-site and nearest neighbor interactions, a gapped phase characterized by an exotic non-local order parameter emerges, the Haldane insulator. Bose-Hubbard models with cavity-mediated global range interactions display phase diagrams, which are very similar to those with nearest neighbor repulsive interactions, but the Haldane phase remains elusive there. Here we study the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor and cavity-mediated global-range interactions and scrutinize the existence of a Haldane Insulator phase. With the help of…
Anfuso and Rosch [Phys. Rev. B 75, 144420 (2007)] showed that the "topological" Haldane phase in a fermionic spin-1/2 ladder can be continuously deformed into a "trivial" phase without explicitly breaking symmetries when local charge fluctuations are taken into account. Within the framework of symmetry protected topological phases, we revisit the model and demonstrate how the Haldane phase can be adiabatically connected to a trivial phase due to charge fluctuations. Furthermore, we show that the Haldane phase remains stable as long as the system is symmetric under particular reflection symmetr…
We propose a Haldane-BCS-Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice, which is composed of two copies of the Haldane model of the quantum anomalous Hall effect, an equal-spin pairing term and an onsite Hubbard interaction term. For any interaction strength, this model is exactly solvable along the symmetric line where the hopping and pairing amplitudes are equal to each other. The ground state of the Haldane-BCS-Hubbard model is a topological superconducting state at weak interaction with two chiral Majorana edge states. A strong interaction drives the system across a topological quantum phase transi…
Motivated by exploring the effect of interactions on Chern insulators, and by recent experiments realizing topological bands for ultracold atoms in synthetic gauge fields, we study the honeycomb lattice Haldane-Hubbard model of spin-$1/2$ fermions. Using an unrestricted mean field approach, we map out the instability of the topological band insulator towards magnetically ordered insulators which emerge with increasing Hubbard repulsion. In addition to the topological Néel phase, we recover various chiral noncoplanar magnetic orders previously identified within a strong coupling approach. We co…
Different realizations of the Hubbard operators in different Hilbert spaces give rise to various microscopic lattice electron models driven by strong correlations. In terms of the Gutzwiller projected operators, the most familiar examples are the t-J and the BCS-Hubbard models at strong coupling. We focus on the spin-dopon representation of the Hubbard operators. In this case the no double occupancy constraint (NDO) can be reexpressed as a Kondo interaction. As an explicit example, the effective low energy action is derived in terms of itinerant spineless fermions (dopons) strongly interacting…
In this letter we study the Haldane model with on-site repulsive interactions at half-filling. We show that the mean-field Hamiltonian with magnetic order effectively modifies parameters in the Haldane Hamiltonian, such as sublattice energy difference and phase in next nearest hopping. As interaction increases, increasing of magnetic order corresponds to varying these parameters and consequently, drives topological transitions. At the mean-field level, one scenario is that the magnetic order continuously increases, and inevitably, the fermion gap closes at the topological transition point with…
We study the spinful fermionic Haldane-Hubbard model at half filling using a combination of quantum cluster methods: cluster perturbation theory (CPT), the variational cluster approximation (VCA), and cluster dynamical mean-field theory (CDMFT). We explore possible zero-temperature phases of the model as a function of on-site repulsive interaction strength and next-nearest-neighbor hopping amplitude and phase. Our approach allows us to access the regime of intermediate interaction strength, where charge fluctuations are significant and effective spin model descriptions may not be justified. Ou…
Motivated by cold atom experiments on Chern insulators, we study the honeycomb lattice Haldane-Hubbard Mott insulator of spin-$1/2$ fermions using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods. We show that this model exhibits various chiral magnetic orders including a wide regime of triple-Q tetrahedral order. Incorporating third-neighbor hopping frustrates and ultimately melts this tetrahedral spin crystal. From analyzing low energy spectra, many-body Chern numbers, entanglement spectra, and modular matrices, we identify the molten state as a chiral spin liquid (CSL)…
We study the Haldane-Hubbard model by exact Renormalization Group techniques. We construct the topological phase diagram, for weak interactions. We predict that many-body interactions induce a shift of the transition line. The presence of new intermediate phases, absent in the non interacting case, is rigorously excluded at weak coupling. Despite the nontrivial renormalization of the wave function and of the Fermi velocity, the conductivity is universal: at the renormalized critical line, both the discontinuity of the transverse conductivity and the longitudinal conductivity do not depend on t…
We study the flat-band ferromagnetic phase of the Haldane-Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice within a bosonization scheme for flat-band Chern insulators, focusing on the calculation of the spin-wave excitation spectrum. We consider the Haldane-Hubbard model with the noninteracting lower bands in a nearly-flat band limit, previously determined for the spinless model, and at 1/4-filling of its corresponding noninteracting limit. Within the bosonization scheme, the Haldane-Hubbard model is mapped into an effective interacting boson model, whose quadratic term allows us to determine the spin-wav…
We reexamine the one-dimensional spin-1 $XXZ$ model with on-site uniaxial single-ion anisotropy as to the appearance and characterization of the symmetry-protected topological Haldane phase. By means of large-scale density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations the central charge can be determined numerically via the von Neumann entropy, from which the ground-sate phase diagram of the model can be derived with high precision. The nontrivial gapped Haldane phase shows up in between the trivial gapped even Haldane and N{é}el phases, appearing at large single-ion and spin--exchange inte…
To determine the impact of including edge states on the phase diagram of a spinless Falicov-Kimball model (FKM) on the Haldane lattice, a study of a corresponding ribbon geometry with zigzag edges is conducted. By varying the ribbon widths, the distinction between the effects connected to the mere presence of the edges and those originating from interference between the edge states is established. The local doping caused by the former is shown to give rise to a topologically trivial bulk insulator with metallic edge states. Additionally, it gives rise to a charge density wave (CDW) phase with …
We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the spinless Haldane-Hubbard model in the presence of quenched disorder, contrasting results obtained from both exact diagonalization as well as density matrix renormalization group, applied to a honeycomb cylinder. The interplay of disorder, interactions and topology gives rise to a rich phase diagram, and in particular highlights the possibility of a disorder-driven trivial-to-topological transition in the presence of finite interactions. That is, the topological Anderson insulator, demonstrated in non-interacting settings, is shown to be stab…
Topology in quantum many-body systems has profoundly changed our understanding of quantum phases of matter. The paradigmatic model that has played an instrumental role in elucidating these effects is the antiferromagnetic spin-1 Haldane chain. Its ground state is a disordered state, with symmetry-protected fourfold-degenerate edge states due to fractional spin excitations. In the bulk, it is characterised by vanishing two-point spin correlations, gapped excitations, and a characteristic non-local order parameter. More recently it was understood that the Haldane chain forms a specific example o…
Motivated by experiments on ultracold atoms which have realized the Haldane model for a Chern insulator, we consider its strongly correlated Mott limit with spin-$1/2$ fermions. We find that slave rotor mean field theory yields gapped or gapless chiral spin liquid Mott insulators. To study competing magnetic orders, we consider the strong coupling effective spin Hamiltonian which includes chiral three-spin exchange. We obtain its classical phase diagram, uncovering various chiral magnetic orders including tetrahedral, cone, and noncoplanar spiral states which can compete with putative chiral q…
The Haldane phase (HP) is a paradigmatic example of symmetry protected topological phase. We explore how the bosonic HP behaves in the presence of local disorder, employing quantum Monte Carlo simulations of an extended Bose-Hubbard model subject to uncorrelated, quenched disorders. We find that the HP is robust against a weak disorder and the non-local string order of HP exhibits a reentrant behavior. Besides, a direct transition between the HP and superfluid phase is uncovered. A significant part of the ground-state phase diagram is established for the model, unveiling the location of HP sur…
We discuss the existence of a nontrivial topological phase in one-dimensional interacting systems described by the extended Bose-Hubbard model with a mean filling of one boson per site. Performing large-scale density-matrix renormalization group calculations we show that the presence of nearest-neighbor repulsion enriches the ground-state phase diagram of the paradigmatic Bose-Hubbard model by stabilizing a novel gapped insulating state, the so-called Haldane insulator, which, embedded into superfluid, Mott insulator, and density wave phases, is protected by the lattice inversion symmetry. The…
Exploiting the entanglement concept within a matrix-product-state based infinite density-matrix renormalization group approach, we show that the spin-density-wave and bond-order-wave ground states of the one-dimensional half-filled extended Hubbard model give way to a symmetry-protected topological Haldane state in case an additional alternating ferromagnetic spin interaction is added. In the Haldane insulator the lowest entanglement level features a characteristic twofold degeneracy. Increasing the ratio between nearest-neighbor and local Coulomb interaction $V/U$, the enhancement of the enta…
We study interplay of electronic correlation, randomness and dimensionality effects in half-filled random Hubbard chains weakly coupled via an interchain one-particle hopping. Based on the two-loop renormalization-group approach, phase diagrams are given in terms of temperature vs. strengths of the intrachain electron-electron umklapp scattering, the random scattering and the interchain one-particle hopping.
The Haldane spin-chain (S=1) insulating compound, Sm2BaNiO5, which has been proposed to order antiferromagnetically around (T_N=) 55 K, was investigated for its complex dielectric permittivity, magnetodielectric and pyrocurrent behavior as a function of temperature (T). In order to enable meaningful discussions, the results of ac and dc magnetizatioin and heat-capacity studies are also reported. We emphasize on the following findings: (i) There is a pyrocurrent peak near T_N, but it is shown not to arise from ferroelectricity, but possibly due to 'thermally stimulated depolarization current', …
Motivated by the recent experimental realization of the Haldane model by ultracold fermions in an optical lattice, we investigate phase diagrams of the hard-core Bose-Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice. This model is closely related with a spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic (AF) quantum spin model. Nearest-neighbor (NN) hopping amplitude is positive and it prefers an AF configurations of phases of Bose-Einstein condensates. On the other hand, an amplitude of the next-NN hopping depends on an angle variable as in the Haldane model. Phase diagrams are obtained by means of an extended path-integral Mon…
We study the Hubbard model on a square lattice, using the dynamical vertex approximation and the parquet approximation. These methods allow us to describe the mutual interference of spin-fluctuations in the particle-hole channel and superconducting fluctuations in the cooperon channel in an unbiased way. For small dopings we find predominant commensurable antiferromagnetic spin- and d-wave superconducting fluctuations; for larger doping incommensurate antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations are concomitant to triplet s-wave superconducting fluctuations.
A slave boson representation for the degenerate Hubbard model is introduced. The location of the metal to insulator transition that occurs at commensurate densities is shown to depend weakly on the band degeneracy M. The relative weights of the Hubbard sub-bands depend strongly on M, as well as the magnetic properties. It is also shown that a sizable Hund's rule coupling is required in order to have a ferromagnetic instability appearing. The metal to insulator transition driven by an increase in temperature is a strong function of it.
We report ten ground states arising from strong correlations in the single-orbital Hubbard model on the decorated honeycomb lattice; including Dirac metals, flat-band ferromagnets, real-space Mott insulators, dimer and trimer Mott insulators, and a spin-$1$ Mott insulator. The rich phase diagram arises from structures within the unit cell. Hence, such states are absent on simpler lattices. We argue that such insulating phases are prevalent on decorated lattices. These are found in many materials and common in coordination polymers, providing a playground to explore this physics.
We report a large-scale density-matrix renormalization group study of the lightly doped Hubbard model on 4-leg cylinders at hole doping concentration $δ=12.5\%$. By keeping a large number of states for long system sizes, we are able to reveal a delicate interplay between superconductivity and charge and spin density wave orders tunable via next-nearest neighbor hopping t'. For finite t', the ground state is consistent with that of a Luther-Emery liquid, having `half-filled' charge stripes with power-law superconducting and charge-density-wave correlations of wave-length $λ=1/2δ$, but short-ran…
On the basis of Quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the two-dimensional Hubbard model which cover the doping range from the under- to the over-doped regime, we find that the single-particle spectral weight $A (\vec k,ω)$ qualitatively reproduces both the momentum ($d_{x^2-y^2}$--symmetry) and doping dependence of the pseudogap as found in photoemission experiments. The drastic doping dependence of the spin response $χ_{s} (\vec q,ω)$ which is sharp in both $\vec q (\approx(π,π))$ and $ω$ in the under-doped regime but broad and structureless otherwise, identifies remnants of the antiferromagneti…
In this paper, we investigate the topological Hubbard model - the spinful Haldane model with on-site interaction on honeycomb lattice with spin rotation symmetry by using slave-rotor approach and find that chiral spin liquid exists in such a correlated electron system of the intermediate coupling region. By considering the anyon nature of excitations, chiral spin liquid may be the ground state of the topological Hubbard model. The low energy physics is basically determined by its Chern-Simons gauge theory.
We investigate the unitary dynamics following a sudden increase $ΔU>0$ of repulsion in the paramagnetic sector of the half-filled Hubbard model on a Bethe lattice, by means of a variational approach that combines a Gutzwiller wavefunction with a partial Schrieffer-Wolff transformation, both defined through time-dependent variational parameters. Besides recovering at $ΔU_c$ the known dynamical transition linked to the equilibrium Mott transition, we find pronounced dynamical anomaly at larger $ΔU_*>ΔU_c$ manifested in a singular behaviour of the long-time average of double occupancy. Although t…
We present an unbiased numerical density-matrix renormalization group study of the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model supplemented by nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction and bond dimerization. It places the emphasis on the determination of the ground-state phase diagram and shows that, besides dimerized Mott and density-wave insulating phases, an intermediate symmetry-protected topological Haldane insulator emerges at weak Coulomb interactions for filling factor one, which disappears, however, when the dimerization becomes too large. Analyzing the critical behavior of the model, we prove that…
Ferromagnetism in the Hubbard model is investigated on sc, bcc, and fcc lattices using a systematic inverse-degeneracy ($1/{\cal N}$) expansion which incorporates self-energy and vertex corrections such that spin-rotation symmetry and the Goldstone mode are explicitly preserved. First-order quantum corrections to magnon energies are evaluated for several cases, providing a comprehensive picture of the interplay of lattice, band dispersion, and interaction effects on the stability of the ferromagnetic state with respect to both long- and short-wavelength fluctuations. Our results support the be…
Using ab-initio calculations we reveal the nature of the insulating phase recently found experimentally in monolayer 1T-NbSe$_2$. We find soft phonon modes in a large parts of the Brillouin zone indicating the strong-coupling nature of a charge-density-wave instability. Structural relaxation of a $\sqrt{13}\times\sqrt{13}$ supercell reveals a Star-of-David reconstruction with an energy gain of 60 meV per primitive unit cell. The band structure of the distorted phase exhibits a half-filled flat band which is associated with orbitals that are delocalized over several atoms in each Star of David.…
There has been a rapidly growing interest on the interplay between spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and Hubbard interaction U in correlated materials. A current consensus is that the stronger the SOC, the smaller is the critical interaction Uc required for a spin-orbit Mott insulator, because the atomic SOC splits a band into different total angular momentum bands narrowing the effective bandwidth. It was further claimed that at large enough SOC, the stronger the SOC, the weaker the Uc because in general the effective SOC is enhanced with increasing electron-electron interaction strength. Contrary to…
We study the Holstein-Hubbard model at half filling to explore ordered phases including su- perconductivity (SC), antiferromagnetism (AF), and charge order (CO) in situations where the electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions are strong (~ electronic bandwidth). The model is solved in the dynamical mean-field approximation using a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver. We determine the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) and the SC order parameter and show that the phonon-induced retardation or the strong Coulomb interaction leads to a significant reduction and …
We calculate the spectral function of the one dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model using the time dependent Density Matrix Renormalization Group (tDMRG), focusing on the regime of large local Coulomb repulsion, and away from electronic half-filling. We argue that, from weak to intermediate electron-phonon coupling, phonons interact only with the electronic charge, and not with the spin degrees of freedom. For strong electron-phonon interaction, spinon and holon bands are not discernible anymore and the system is well described by a spinless polaronic liquid. In this regime, we observe multiple p…
It is now well established that superconducting cuprates support a charge density wave state in the so-called underdoped region of their phase diagram. We investigate the possibility of charge order in the square-lattice Hubbard model, both alone and in coexistence with $d$-wave superconductivity. The charge order has a period four in one direction, is centered on bonds and has a $d$ form factor. We use the variational cluster approximation, an approach based on a rigorous variational principle that treats short-range correlations exactly, with two clusters of size $2\times6$ that together til…
We investigate the competition between superconductivity, charge-ordering, magnetic-ordering, and the Kondo effect in a heavy fermion $s$-wave superconductor described by a Kondo lattice model with an attractive on-site Hubbard interaction. The model is solved using the real-space dynamical mean field theory. For this purpose, we develop a numerical renormalization group (NRG) framework in Nambu space, which is used to solve the superconducting impurity problem. This extended NRG scheme also allows for SU(2) spin symmetry broken solutions, enabling us to examine the competition or cooperation …
