I propose a state of the art deep neural architectural solution for handwritten character recognition for Bengali alphabets, compound characters as well as numerical digits that achieves state-of-the-art accuracy 96.8% in just 11 epochs. Similar work has been done before by Chatterjee, Swagato, et al. but they achieved 96.12% accuracy in about 47 epochs. The deep neural architecture used in that paper was fairly large considering the inclusion of the weights of the ResNet 50 model which is a 50 layer Residual Network. This proposed model achieves higher accuracy as compared to any previous work & in a little number of epochs. ResNet50 is a good model trained on the ImageNet dataset, but I propose an HCR network that is trained from the scratch on Bengali characters without the "Ensemble Learning" that can outperform previous architectures.
Solving problems with Artificial intelligence in a competitive manner has long been absent in Bangladesh and Bengali-speaking community. On the other hand, there has not been a well structured database for Bengali Handwritten digits for mass public use. To bring out the best minds working in machine learning and use their expertise to create a model which can easily recognize Bengali Handwritten digits, we organized Bengali.AI Computer Vision Challenge. The challenge saw both local and international teams participating with unprecedented efforts.

To benchmark Bengali digit recognition algorithms, a large publicly available dataset is required which is free from biases originating from geographical location, gender, and age. With this aim in mind, NumtaDB, a dataset consisting of more than 85,000 images of hand-written Bengali digits, has been assembled. This paper documents the collection and curation process of numerals along with the salient statistics of the dataset.

Images of handwritten digits are different from natural images as the orientation of a digit, as well as similarity of features of different digits, makes confusion. On the other hand, deep convolutional neural networks are achieving huge success in computer vision problems, especially in image classification. BDNet is a densely connected deep convolutional neural network model used to classify (recognize) Bengali handwritten numeral digits. It is end-to-end trained using ISI Bengali handwritten numeral dataset. During training, untraditional data preprocessing and augmentation techniques are …
Character segmentation has long been one of the most critical areas of optical character recognition process. Through this operation, an image of a sequence of characters, which may be connected in some cases, is decomposed into sub-images of individual alphabetic symbols. In this paper, segmentation of cursive handwritten script of world's fourth popular language, Bengali, is considered. Unlike English script, Bengali handwritten characters and its components often encircle the main character, making the conventional segmentation methodologies inapplicable. Experimental results, using the pro…

Optical character recognition (OCR) is a process of converting analogue documents into digital using document images. Currently, many commercial and non-commercial OCR systems exist for both handwritten and printed copies for different languages. Despite this, very few works are available in case of recognising Bengali words. Among them, most of the works focused on OCR of printed Bengali characters. This paper introduces an end-to-end OCR system for Bengali language. The proposed architecture implements an end to end strategy that recognises handwritten Bengali words from handwritten word ima…
NumtaDB is by far the largest data-set collection for handwritten digits in Bengali. This is a diverse dataset containing more than 85000 images. But this diversity also makes this dataset very difficult to work with. The goal of this paper is to find the benchmark for pre-processed images which gives good accuracy on any machine learning models. The reason being, there are no available pre-processed data for Bengali digit recognition to work with like the English digits for MNIST.

Handwritten character recognition is a hot topic for research nowadays. If we can convert a handwritten piece of paper into a text-searchable document using the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technique, we can easily understand the content and do not need to read the handwritten document. OCR in the English language is very common, but in the Bengali language, it is very hard to find a good quality OCR application. If we can merge machine learning and deep learning with OCR, it could be a huge contribution to this field. Various researchers have proposed a number of strategies for recogni…
Despite being one of the most spoken languages in the world ($6^{th}$ based on population), research regarding Bengali handwritten grapheme (smallest functional unit of a writing system) classification has not been explored widely compared to other prominent languages. Moreover, the large number of combinations of graphemes in the Bengali language makes this classification task very challenging. With an effort to contribute to this research problem, we participate in a Kaggle competition \cite{kaggle_link} where the challenge is to separately classify three constituent elements of a Bengali gr…

Latin has historically led the state-of-the-art in handwritten optical character recognition (OCR) research. Adapting existing systems from Latin to alpha-syllabary languages is particularly challenging due to a sharp contrast between their orthographies. The segmentation of graphical constituents corresponding to characters becomes significantly hard due to a cursive writing system and frequent use of diacritics in the alpha-syllabary family of languages. We propose a labeling scheme based on graphemes (linguistic segments of word formation) that makes segmentation in-side alpha-syllabary wor…

It is difficult to recognize handwritten scripts for which sufficient training data is not readily available or it may be expensive to collect such data. Hence, it becomes hard to train recognition systems owing to lack of proper dataset. To overcome such problems, synthetic data could be used to create or expand the existing training dataset to improve recognition performance. Any available digital data from online newspaper and such sources can be used to generate synthetic data. In t…

Peoples nowadays prefer to use digital gadgets like cameras or mobile phones for capturing documents. Automatic extraction of panels/characters from the images of a comic document is challenging due to the wide variety of drawing styles adopted by writers, beneficial for readers to read them on mobile devices at any time and useful for automatic digitization. Most of the methods for localization of panel/character rely on the connected component analysis or page background mask and are applicable only for a limited comic dataset. This work proposes a panel/character localization architecture b…
Handwriting of Chinese has long been an important skill in East Asia. However, automatic generation of handwritten Chinese characters poses a great challenge due to the large number of characters. Various machine learning techniques have been used to recognize Chinese characters, but few works have studied the handwritten Chinese character generation problem, especially with unpaired training data. In this work, we formulate the Chinese handwritten character generation as a problem that learns a mapping from an existing printed font to a personalized handwritten style. We further propose Dense…

Experimental results show that FDF set perform well for writer independent data set at stroke level recognition. The main contributio…
The paper presents a two stage classification approach for handwritten devanagari characters The first stage is using structural properties like shirorekha, spine in character and second stage exploits some intersection features of characters which are fed to a feedforward neural network. Simple histogram based method does not work for finding shirorekha, vertical bar (Spine) in handwritten devnagari characters. So we designed a differential distance based technique to find a near straight line for shirorekha and spine. This approach has been tested for 50000 samples and we got 89.12% success

In this paper, we propose to discriminate similar handwritten Chinese characters by using weakly supervised learning. Our approach learns a discriminative SVM for each similar pair which simultaneously localizes the discriminative region of similar character and makes the classification. For the first time, similar handwritten Chinese character recognition (SHCCR) is formulated as an optimization problem extended from SVM. We also propose a novel feature descriptor, Gradient Context, …

We introduce two data augmentation techniques, which, used with a Resnet-BiLSTM-CTC network, significantly reduce Word Error Rate (WER) and Character Error Rate (CER) beyond best-reported results on handwriting text recognition (HTR) tasks. We apply a novel augmentation that simulates strikethrough text (HandWritten Blots) and a handwritten text generation method based on printed text (StackMix), which proved to be very effective in HTR tasks. StackMix uses weakly-supervised framework to get character boundaries. Because these data augmentation techniques are independent of the network used, t…
