Due to digitalization in everyday life, the need for automatically recognizing handwritten digits is increasing. Handwritten digit recognition is essential for numerous applications in various industries. Bengali ranks the fifth largest language in the world with 265 million speakers (Native and non-native combined) and 4 percent of the world population speaks Bengali. Due to the complexity of Bengali writing in terms of variety in shape, size, and writing style, researchers did not get better accuracy using Supervised machine learning algorithms to date. Moreover, fewer studies have been done on Bangla handwritten digit recognition (BHwDR). In this paper, we proposed a novel CNN-based pre-trained handwritten digit recognition model which includes Resnet-50, Inception-v3, and EfficientNetB0 on NumtaDB dataset of 17 thousand instances with 10 classes.. The Result outperformed the performance of other models to date with 97% accuracy in the 10-digit classes. Furthermore, we have evaluated the result or our model with other research studies while suggesting future study

Bangla Handwritten Digit recognition is a significant step forward in the development of Bangla OCR. However, intricate shape, structural likeness and distinctive composition style of Bangla digits makes it relatively challenging to distinguish. Thus, in this paper, we benchmarked four rigorous classifiers to recognize Bangla Handwritten Digit: K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), and Gradient-Boosted Decision Trees (GBDT) based on three handcrafted feature extraction techniques: Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG), Local Binary Pattern (LBP), and Gabor…

Handwritten data samples containing isolated Bangla basic characters and digits were collected from different users. Tesseract is trained with user-specific data samples of document pages to generate separate user-models representing a unique language-set. Each such language-set recognizes isolated basic Bangla handwritten test samples collected from the designated users. On a three user model, the system is t…
A novel approach for recognition of handwritten compound Bangla characters, along with the Basic characters of Bangla alphabet, is presented here. Compared to English like Roman script, one of the major stumbling blocks in Optical Character Recognition (OCR) of handwritten Bangla script is the large number of complex shaped character classes of Bangla alphabet. In addition to 50 basic character classes, there are nearly 160 complex shaped compound character classes in Bangla alphabet. Dealing with such a large varieties of handwritten characters with a suitably designed feature set is a challe…

Classification techniques for images of handwritten characters are susceptible to noise. Quadtrees can be an efficient representation for learning from sparse features. In this paper, we improve the effectiveness of probabilistic quadtrees by using a pixel level classifier to extract the character pixels and remove noise from handwritten character images. The pixel level denoiser (a deep belief network) uses the map responses obtained from a pretrained CNN as features for reconstructing the characters eliminating noise. We experimentally demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach by reconst…

Finding local invariant patterns in handwrit-ten characters and/or digits for optical character recognition is a difficult task. Variations in writing styles from one person to another make this task challenging. We have proposed a non-explicit feature extraction method using a multi-scale multi-column skip convolutional neural network in this work. Local and global features extracted from different layers of the proposed architecture are combined to derive the final feature descriptor encoding a character or digit image. Our method is evaluated on four publicly available datasets of isolated …
Appropriate feature set for representation of pattern classes is one of the most important aspects of handwritten character recognition. The effectiveness of features depends on the discriminating power of the features chosen to represent patterns of different classes. However, discriminatory features are not easily measurable. Investigative experimentation is necessary for identifying discriminatory features. In the present work we have identified a new variation of feature set which significantly outperforms on handwritten Bangla alphabet from the previously used feature set. 132 number of f…

These texts were subsequently used to generate the annotations that were filled out by people with their handwriting. Our dataset includes 788 images of handwritten pages produced by approximately 150 different writers. It can be adopted as a basis for various handwriting classification tasks such as end-to-end document recognition, word-spo…
Due to the sparsity of features, noise has proven to be a great inhibitor in the classification of handwritten characters. To combat this, most techniques perform denoising of the data before classification. In this paper, we consolidate the approach by training an all-in-one model that is able to classify even noisy characters. For classification, we progressively train a classifier generative adversarial network on the characters from low to high resolution. We show that by learning the features at each resolution independently a trained model is able to accurately classify characters even i…

Increased accuracy in predictive models for handwritten character recognition will open up new frontiers for optical character recognition. Major drawbacks of predictive machine learning models are headed by the elongated training time taken by some models, and the requirement that training and test data be in the same feature space and consist of the same distribution. In this study, these obstacles are minimized by presenting a model for transferring knowledge from one task to another. This model is presented for the recognition of handwritten numerals in Indic languages. The model utilizes …

The purpose of this neural network is to classify input images into 10 different classes or digits (0-9) and to explore new findings. The input dataset used consists of digits images of size 32X32 in grayscale (MNIST dataset).
In this letter, we contribute a multi-language handwritten digit recognition dataset named MNIST-MIX, which is the largest dataset of the same type in terms of both languages and data samples. With the same data format with MNIST, MNIST-MIX can be seamlessly applied in existing studies for handwritten digit recognition. By introducing digits from 10 different languages, MNIST-MIX becomes a more challenging dataset and its imbalanced classification requires a better design of models. We also present the results of applying a LeNet model which is pre-trained on MNIST as the baseline.

This paper proposes a novel way of generating diverse handwritten word images using handwritten characters. The idea of our project is to train the BiLSTM-CTC architecture with generated synthetic…
In this paper, the problem of handwritten digit recognition has been addressed. However, the underlying language is Persian/Arabic, and the system with which this task is a capsule network (CapsNet) has recently emerged as a more advanced architecture than its ancestor, namely CNN (Convolutional Neural Network). The training of the architecture is performed using the Hoda dataset, which has been provided for Persian/Arabic handwritten digits. The output of the system clearly outperforms the results achieved by its ancestors, as well as other previously presented recognition algorithms.

An efficient, scalable and robust approach to the handwritten digits recognition problem based on the Saak transform is proposed in this work. First, multi-stage Saak transforms are used to extract a family of joint spatial-spectral representations of input images. Then, the Saak coefficients are used as features and fed into the SVM classifier for the classification task. In order to control the size of Saak coefficients, we adopt a lossy Saak transform that uses the principal component analysis (PCA) to select a smaller set of transform kernels. The handwritten digits recognition problem is …
NumtaDB is by far the largest data-set collection for handwritten digits in Bengali. This is a diverse dataset containing more than 85000 images. But this diversity also makes this dataset very difficult to work with. The goal of this paper is to find the benchmark for pre-processed images which gives good accuracy on any machine learning models. The reason being, there are no available pre-processed data for Bengali digit recognition to work with like the English digits for MNIST.
Handwritten digit recognition is one of the extensively studied area in machine learning. Apart from the wider research on handwritten digit recognition on MNIST dataset, there are many other research works on various script recognition. However, it is not very common for multi-script digit recognition which encourage the development of robust and multipurpose systems. Additionally working on multi-script digit recognition enables multi-task learning, considering the script classification as a related task for instance. Word-level handwritten optical character recognition (OCR) remains a challenge for morphologically rich languages like Bangla. The complexity arises from the existence of a large number of alphabets, the presence of several diacritic forms, and the appearance of complex conjuncts.
