We consider simultaneous and continuous measurement of two noncommutative observables of the system whose commutator is not necessarily a $c$-number. We revisit the Arthurs-Kelly model and generalize it to describe the simultaneous measurement of two observables of the system. Using this generalized model, we continuously measure the system by following the scheme proposed by Scott and Milburn [Scott and Milburn, Phys. Rev. A 63, 042101 (2001)]. We find that the unconditioned master equation reduces to the Lindblad form in the continuous limit. In addition, we find that the master equation does not contain a cross term of these two measurements. Finally, we propose a scheme to prepare the state of a two-level system in an external field by feedback control based on the simultaneous, continuous measurement of the two observables.
As an application of the simultaneous and continuous measurement of noncommutative observables formulated in our previous paper [C. Jiang and G. Watanabe, Phys. Rev. A 102, 062216 (2020)], we propose a scheme to generate the pure ideal quadrature-squeezed state in a one-dimensional harmonic oscillator system by the feedback control based on such type of measurement of noncommutative quadrature observables. We find that, by appropriately setting the strengths of the measurement and the feedback control, the pure ideal quadrature-squeezed state with arbitrary squeezedness can be produced. This i…
We study the influence of the spacetime noncommutative parameter on the strong field gravitational lensing in the noncommutative Reissner-Nordström black-hole spacetime. Supposing that the gravitational field of the supermassive central object of the Galaxy is described by this metric, we estimate the numerical values of the coefficients and observables for strong gravitational lensing. Our results show that with the increase of the parameter $\sqrt{\vartheta}$, the observables $θ_{\infty}$ and $r_m$ decrease, while $s$ increases. Our results also show that i) if $\sqrt{\vartheta}$ is strong, …
With approaching quantum/noncommutative models for the deep microscopic spacetime in mind, and inspired by our recent picture of the (projective) Hilbert space as the model of physical space behind basic quantum mechanics, we reformulate here the WWGM formalism starting from the canonical coherent states and taking wavefunctions as expansion coefficients in terms of this basis. This provides us with a transparent and coherent story of simple quantum dynamics where both the wavefunctions for the pure states and operators acting on them arise from the single space/algebra, which exactly includes…
Two examples of the situation when the classical observables should be described by a noncommutative probability space are investigated. Possible experimental approach to find quantum-like correlations for classical disordered systems is discussed. The interpretation of noncommutative probability in experiments with classical systems as a result of context (complex of experimental physical conditions) dependence of probability is considered.
Observable properties of a classical physical system can be modelled deterministically as functions from the space of pure states to outcomes; dually, states can be modelled as functions from the algebra of observables to outcomes. The probabilistic predictions of quantum physics are contextual in that they preclude this classical assumption of reality: noncommuting observables, which are not assumed to be comeasurable, cannot be consistently ascribed deterministic values even if one enriches the description of a quantum state. Here, we consider the geometrically dual objects of noncommutative…
We consider electrodynamics on a noncommutative spacetime using the enveloping algebra approach and perform a non-relativistic expansion of the effective action. We obtain the Hamiltonian for quantum mechanics formulated on a canonical noncommutative spacetime. An interesting new feature of quantum mechanics formulated on a noncommutative spacetime is an intrinsic electric dipole moment. We note however that noncommutative intrinsic dipole moments are not observable in present experiments searching for an EDM of leptons or nuclei such as the neutron since they are spin independent. These exper…
Mean king's problem is a kind of quantum state discrimination problems. In the problem, we try to discriminate eigenstates of noncommutative observables with the help of classical delayed information. The problem has been investigated from the viewpoint of error detection and correction. We construct higher-dimensional quantum error-correcting codes against error corresponding to the noncommutative observables. Any code state of the codes provides a way to discriminate the eigenstates correctly with the classical delayed information.
Ozawa's measurement-disturbance relation is generalized to a phase-space noncommutative extension of quantum mechanics. It is shown that the measurement-disturbance relations have additional terms for backaction evading quadrature amplifiers and for noiseless quadrature transducers. Several distinctive features appear as a consequence of the noncommutative extension: measurement interactions which are noiseless, and observables which are undisturbed by a measurement, or of independent intervention in ordinary quantum mechanics, may acquire noise, become disturbed by the measurement, or no long…
Anderson's nonstandard construction of brownian motion as an infinitesimal random walk on the euclidean line is generalized to an Hausdorff riemannian manifold. A nonstandard Feynman-Kac formula holding on such an Hausdorff riemannian manifold is derived. Indications are given on how these (radically elementary) results could allow to formulate a nonstandard version of Stochastic Mechanics (avoiding both the explicitly discussed bugs of Internal Set Theory as well as the controversial renormalization of the stochastic action). It is anyway remarked how this would contribute to hide the basic f…
In this sequence of papers, noncommutative analysis is used to give a consistent axiomatic approach to a unified conceptual foundation of classical and quantum physics. The present Part I defines the concepts of observables, states and ensembles, clarifies the logical relations and operations for them, and shows how they give rise to dynamics and probabilities. States are identified with maximal consistent sets of weak equalities in the algebra of observables (instead of, as usual, with the rays in a Hilbert space). This leads to a concise foundation of quantum mechanics, free of undefined ter…
A complete theory of overmeasurement by measuring refinements of observables is presented. It encompasses a wider set of functions of observ- ables (coarsenings) . Thus the theory has a broad potential application. It is applied to a thorough investigation of simultaneous measurements. In partic- ular, the set of all simultaneous measurements for a given pair of compatible observables is determined.
We study, with the use of numerical integration, a noncommutative extension of a quantum-theoretic model (an alternative to the semiclassical Brillouin function), recently presented by Brody and Hughston and, independently, Slater, for the thermodynamic behavior of a spin-1/2 particle. Differences between the (broadly similar) predictions yielded by this extended model and those obtained from its conventional (semiclassical/Jaynesian) entropy-maximization counterpart are examined.
It has been argued that the existence of time crystals requires a spontaneous breakdown of the continuous time translation symmetry so to account for the unexpected non-stationary behavior of quantum observables in the ground state. Our point is that such effects do emerge from position ($\hat{q}_i$) and/or momentum ($\hat{p}_i$) noncommutativity, i.e., from $[\hat{q}_i,\,\hat{q}_j]\neq 0$ and/or $[\hat{p}_i,\,\hat{p}_j]\neq 0$ (for $i\neq j$). In such a context, a predictive analysis is carried out for the $2$-dim noncommutative quantum harmonic oscillator through a procedure supported by the…
One of the central features of quantum theory is that there are pairs of quantum observables that cannot be measured simultaneously. This incompatibility of quantum observables is a necessary ingredient in several quantum phenomena, such as measurement uncertainty relations, violation of Bell inequalities and steering. Two quantum observables that admit a simultaneous measurement are, in this respect, classical. A finer classification of classicality can be made by formulating four symmetric relations on the set of observables that are stronger than compatibility; they are broadcastability, on…
We have made the first experimental demonstration of the simultaneous minimum uncertainty product between two complementary observables for a two-state system (a qubit). A partially entangled two-photon state was used to perform such measurements. Each of the photons carries (partial) information of the initial state thus leaving a room for measurements of two complementary observables on every member in an ensemble.
We present a family of entropic uncertainty relations for pointer-based simultaneous measurements of conjugate observables. The lower bounds of these relations explicitly incorporate the influence of the measurement apparatus. We achieve this by using a mathematical theorem which states that the information entropy of convoluted probability distributions is bound from below. As a consequence of these results we can straightforwardly show that appropriately squeezed states are minimal entropy states for simultaneous measurements.
Simultaneous measurement of several noncommuting observables is modeled by using semigroups of completely positive maps on an algebra with a non-trivial center. The resulting piecewise-deterministic dynamics leads to chaos and to nonlinear iterated function systems (quantum fractals) on complex projective spaces.
We consider topological groupoids in finite and also in a compact settings. In the initial sections, we introduce definitions of typical observables and we studied them in the context of statistical mechanics and quantum mechanics. We exhibit explicit examples and one of them will be the so-called quantum ratchet. This is related to Schwinger's algebra of selective measurements. Here we consider $\mathcal{G}$-kernels, transverse functions, modular functions, and quasi-invariant measures for Haar systems. Later we present our main result which is a version of Tannaka's theorem for Hausdorff com…
Malley discussed {[Phys. Rev. A {\bf 69}, 022118 (2004)]} that all quantum observables in a hidden-variable model for quantum events must commute simultaneously. In this comment, we discuss that Malley's theorem is indeed valid for the hidden-variable theoretical assumptions, which were introduced by Kochen and Specker. However, we give an example that the local hidden-variable (LHV) model for quantum events preserves noncommutativity of quantum observables. It turns out that Malley's theorem is not related with the LHV model for quantum events, in general.
We combine traditional pointer-based simultaneous measurements of conjugate observables with the concept of quantum Brownian motion of multipartite systems to phenomenologically model simultaneous measurements of conjugate observables in a thermal environment. This approach provides us with a formal solution of the complete measurement dynamics for quadratic Hamiltonians and we can therefore discuss the measurement uncertainty and optimal measurement times. As a main result, we obtain a lower bound for the uncertainty of a noisy measurement, which is an extension of a previously known uncertai…
A limitation on simultaneous measurement of two arbitrary positive operator valued measures is discussed. In general, simultaneous measurement of two noncommutative observables is only approximately possible. Following Werner's formulation, we introduce a distance between observables to quantify an accuracy of measurement. We derive an inequality that relates the achievable accuracy with noncommutativity between two observables. As a byproduct a necessary condition for two positive operator valued measures to be simultaneously measurable is obtained.
It is shown that the full unknown state of a spin-1/2 system, S, which, within Born's statistical interpretation, is meant as the state of an ensamble of identically prepared systems, can be determined with a simultaneous measurement with the help of an "assistant" system A whose initial state is known. The idea is to let S and A interact with each other in a known way during a proper interaction time, to measure simultaneously two observables, one of S and one of A and their correlation. One thus determines the three unknown components of the polarization vector of S by means of repeated expe…
In this work quantum physics in noncommutative spacetime is developed. It is based on the work of Doplicher et al. which allows for time-space noncommutativity. The Moyal plane is treated in detail. In the context of noncommutative quantum mechanics, some important points are explored, such as the formal construction of the theory, symmetries, causality, simultaneity and observables. The dynamics generated by a noncommutative Schrodinger equation is studied. We prove in particular the following: suppose the Hamiltonian of a quantum mechanical particle on spacetime has no explicit time dependen…
We present a protocol that allows us to obtain the concurrence of any two qubit pure state by performing a minimal and optimal tomography of one of the subsystems through measuring a single observable of an ancillary four dimensional qudit. An implementation for a system of trapped ions is also proposed, which can be achieved with present day experimental techniques.
Gravitational well is a widely used system for the verification of the quantum weak equivalence principle (WEP). We have studied the quantum gravitational well (GW) under the shed of noncommutative (NC) space so that the results can be utilized for testing the validity of WEP in NC-space. To keep our study widely usable, we have considered both position-position and momentum-momentum noncommutativity. Since coherent state (CS) structure provides a natural bridging between the classical and quantum domain descriptions, the quantum domain validity of purely classical phenomena like free-fall und…
Quantum mechanics predicts the joint probability distribution of the outcomes of simultaneous measurements of commuting observables, but, in the state of the art, has lacked the operational definition of simultaneous measurements. The question is answered as to when the consecutive applications of measuring apparatuses give a simultaneous measurement of their observables. For this purpose, all the possible state reductions caused by measurements of an observable is also characterized by their operations.
We propose a solution to the problem of realizing a predefined and arbitrary pure quantum state, based on the simultaneous presence of coherent and dissipative dynamics, noncommuting on the target state and in the limit of strong dissipation. More precisely, we obtain a necessary and sufficient criterion whereby the nonequilibrium steady state (NESS) of an open quantum system described by a Lindblad master equation approaches a target pure state in the Zeno regime, i.e., for infinitely large dissipative coupling. We also provide an explicit formula for the characteristic dissipative strength b…
We discuss the information entropy for a general open pointer-based simultaneous measurement and show how it is bound from below. This entropic uncertainty bound is a direct consequence of the structure of the entropy and can be obtained from the formal solution of the measurement dynamics. Furthermore, the structural properties of the entropy allow us to give an intuitive interpretation of the noisy influence of the pointers and the environmental heat bath on the measurement results.
Under a standard set of assumptions for a hidden-variables model for quantum events, we show that all observables must commute simultaneously. And, despite Bell's complaint that a key condition of von Neumann's was quite unrealistic, we show these these conditions are entirely equivalent to those later introduced by Bell, Kochen and Specker. As is it known that these conditions are also equivalent to those under which the Bell-Clauser-Horne inequalities are derived, we see that any experimental violations of the inequalities demonstrate only that quantum observables do not commute. The same con…
We consider the simultaneous and continuous measurement of qubit observables $σ_z$ and $σ_z\cosφ+ σ_x\sinφ$, focusing on the temporal correlations of the two output signals. Using quantum Bayesian theory, we derive analytical expressions for the correlators, which we find to be in very good agreement with experimentally measured output signals. We further discuss how the correlators can be applied to parameter estimation, and use them to infer a small residual qubit Hamiltonian arising from calibration inaccuracy in the experimental data.
Quantum mechanics predicts the joint probability distributions of the outcomes of simultaneous measurements of commuting observables, but the current formulation lacks the operational definition of simultaneous measurements. In order to provide foundations of joint statistics of local general measurements on entangled systems in a general theoretical framework, the question is answered as to under what condition the outputs of two measuring apparatuses satisfy the joint probability formula for simultaneous measurements of their observables. For this purpose, all the possible state changes caus…
Joint or simultaneous measurements of non-commuting quantum observables are possible at the cost of increased unsharpness or measurement uncertainty. Many different criteria exist for defining what an "optimal" joint measurement is, with corresponding different tradeoff relations for the measurements. Understanding the limitations of such measurements is of fundamental interest and relevant for quantum technology. Here, we experimentally test a tradeoff relation for the sharpness of qubit measurements, a relation which refers directly to the form of the measurement operators, rather than to er…
In the conventional formulation, it is broadly accepted that simultaneous measurability and commutativity of observables are equivalent. However, several objections have been claimed that there are cases in which even nowhere commuting observables can be measured simultaneously. Here, we outline a new theory of simultaneous measurements based on a state-dependent formulation, in which nowhere commuting observables are shown to have simultaneous measurements in some states, so that the known objections to the conventional theory are theoretically justified. We also discuss new results on the re…
We augment the information extractable from a single absorption image of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate by coupling to initially empty auxiliary hyperfine states. Performing unitary transformations in both, the original and auxiliary hyperfine manifold, enables the simultaneous measurement of multiple spin-1 observables. We apply this scheme to an elongated atomic cloud of $ ^{87} $Rb to simultaneously read out three orthogonal spin directions and with that directly access the spatial spin structure. The readout even allows the extraction of quantum correlations which we demonstrate by dete…
In quantum mechanics, measurements cause wavefunction collapse that yields precise outcomes, for non-commuting observables such as position and momentum Heisenberg's uncertainty principle limits the intrinsic precision of a state. Although theoretical work has demonstrated the possibility to perform simultaneous non-commuting measurements and has revealed the limits on measurement outcomes, only recently has the dynamics of the quantum state been discussed. To realize this unexplored regime, we simultaneously apply two continuous quantum non-demolition probes of non-commuting observables to a …
The recently established universal uncertainty principle revealed that two nowhere commuting observables can be measured simultaneously in some state, whereas they have no joint probability distribution in any state. Thus, one measuring apparatus can simultaneously measure two observables that have no simultaneous reality. In order to reconcile this discrepancy, an approach based on quantum logic is proposed to establish the relation between quantum reality and measurement. We provide a language speaking of values of observables independent of measurement based on quantum logic and we construc…

We propose an alternative interpretation for the meaning of noncommutativity of the string-inspired field theories and quantum mechanics. Arguments are presented to show that the noncommutativity generated in the stringy context should be assumed to be only between the particle coordinate observables, and not of the spacetime coordinates. Some implications of this fact for noncomutative field theories and quantum mechanics are discussed. In particular, a consistent interpretation is given for the wavefunction in quantum mechanics. An analysis of the noncommutative theories in the Schrödinger f…
In contrast to a projective quantum measurement in which the system is projected onto an eigenstate of the measured operator, in a weak measurement the system is only weakly perturbed while only partial information on the measured observable is obtained. A full description of such measurement should describe the measurement protocol and provide an explicit form of the measurement operator that transform the quantum state to its post measurement form. A simultaneous measurement of non-commuting observables cannot be projective, however the strongest possible such measurement can be defined as p…
Nonclassicality cannot be a single-observable property since the statistics of any quantum observable is compatible with classical physics. We develop a general procedure to reveal nonclassical behavior from the joint measurement of multiple observables. This requires enlarged spaces and couplings with auxiliary degrees of freedom so it must be followed by an inversion procedure to infer system properties from the observed statistics. In particular this discloses nonclassical properties of standard examples of classical-like behavior, such as SU(2) and Glauber coherent states. Moreover, when c…
We discuss coupling of violation of Bell's inequality and non-Kolmogorovness of statistical data in the EPR-Bohm experiment. We emphasize that nonlocalty and "death of realism" are only sufficient, but not necessary conditions of non-Kolmogorovness. There can be found other sufficient conditions of non-Kolmogorovness and, hence, violation of Bell's inequality. We find one important source of non-Kolmogorovness by analyzing axiomatics of quantum mechanics. We pay attention to the postulate (due to von Neumann and Dirac) on simultaneous measurement of quantum observables given by commuting opera…
We consider the temporal correlations of the quantum state of a qubit subject to simultaneous continuous measurement of two non-commuting qubit observables. Such qubit state correlators are defined for an ensemble of qubit trajectories, which has the same fixed initial state and can also be optionally constrained by a fixed final state. We develop a stochastic path integral description for the continuous quantum measurement and use it to calculate the considered correlators. Exact analytic results are possible in the case of ideal measurements of equal strength and are also shown to agree with…
As the first step in an approach to the solution of Hilbert's sixth problem, a general scheme of mechanics, called `supmech', is developed integrating noncommutative symplectic geometry and noncommutative probability theory in an algebraic framework; it has quantum mechanics (QM) and classical mechanics as special subdisciplines and facilitates an autonomous development of QM and satisfactory treatments of quantum-classical correspondence and quantum measurements (including a straightforward \emph{derivation} of the von Neumann reduction rule). The scheme associates, with every `experimentally…
All experimental tests of Bell-type inequalities and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger setups rely on the separate and successive measurement of the terms involved. We discuss possibilities of experimental setups to measure all relevant terms simultaneously in a single experiment and find this to be impossible. One reason is the lack of multi-partite states which are unique in the sense that a measurement of some observable on one particle fixes the value of the corresponding observables of the other particles as well.

The fact that not all quantum observables are jointly measurable is one of the major differences between quantum and classical theory. In the former, non-commuting observables can only be simultaneously measured with limited precision. We report on an experimental implementation of such a simultaneous measurement of two non-commuting observables based on the framework of weak von Neumann measurements. We use a photonic setup where the polarisation degree of freedom acts as the system and the two components of the transversal position correspond to the pointers of the measurement apparatuses. I…
In previous work, we developed quantum physics on the Moyal plane with time-space noncommutativity, basing ourselves on the work of Doplicher et al.. Here we extend it to certain noncommutative versions of the cylinder, $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ and $\mathbb{R}\times S^{3}$. In all these models, only discrete time translations are possible, a result known before in the first two cases. One striking consequence of quantised time translations is that even though a time independent Hamiltonian is an observable, in scattering processes, it is conserved only modulo $\frac{2π}θ$, where $θ$ is the noncommutat…
