We investigate equilibrium configurations of uniformly rotating neutron stars in $R^2$ gravity with axion scalar field for GM1 equation of state (EoS) for nuclear matter. The mass-radius diagram, mass-central energy density are presented for some frequencies in comparison with static stars. We also compute equatorial and polar radii and moment of inertia for stars. For axion field $ϕ$ the coupling in the form $\sim R^2ϕ$ is assumed. Several interesting results follow from our consideration. Maximal possible star mass with given EoS increases due to the contribution of coupling term. We discovered the possibility to increase maximal frequency of the rotation in comparison with General Relativity. As a consequence the lower bound on mass of the fast rotating stars decreases. For frequency $f=700$ Hz neutron stars with masses $\sim M_\odot$ can exist for some choice of parameters (in General Relativity for same EoS this limit is around $1.2 M_{\odot}$). Another feature of our solutions is relatively small increase of stars radii for high frequencies in comparison with static case. Thus, eventually the new class of neutron stars in $R^2$ gravity with axions is discovered namely fast rotating compact stars with intermediate masses.
Numerical analysis of dark matter axion-like cloud in the vicinity of rotating black hole has been performed. The model where axion-like scalar field is non-trivially coupled to Maxwell field is studied in the spacetime of Kerr black hole in uniform magnetic field and in Kerr-Newman one. The dependence of scalar mass and black hole angular momentum on accumulation of axion dark matter cloud was given. It was revealed that condensation of the dark matter clouds is preferable for a very small mass of axion.
By exploiting the extreme environment of the black hole (BH) as a potential place for axion-photon interaction, we use an axion-producing model of the magnetized plasma to study the shadow of an asymptotically flat rotating BH immersed into an axion-plasmon cloud. By aiming to reveal footprints of axion in the dark shadow of BH, we in this paper explore the influence of the fixed axion-plasmon background on the motion of incident photons around the rotating BH. Under some free parameter settings, we find that axion-plasmon cloud around rotating BH affects the shape and size of the shadow in su…
It's shown that the rotating dilaton-axion black hole solution can be obtained from GGHS static charged dilaton black hole solution via Newman-Janis method.

We construct rotating hybrid axion-miniboson stars (RHABSs), which are asymptotically flat, stationary, axially symmetric solutions of (3+1)-dimensional Einstein-Klein-Gordon theory. RHABSs consist of a axion field (ground state) and a free complex scalar field (first excited state). The solutions of the RHABSs have two types of nodes, including $^1S^2S$ state and $^1S^2P$ state. For different axion decay constants $f_a$, we present the mass $M$ of RHABSs as a function of the synchronized frequency $ω$, as well as the nonsynchronized frequency $ω_2$, and explore the mass $M$ versus the angular…
Light axion fields, if they exist, can be sourced by neutron stars due to their coupling to nuclear matter, and play a role in binary neutron star mergers. We report on a search for such axions by analysing the gravitational waves from the binary neutron star inspiral GW170817. We find no evidence of axions in the sampled parameter space. The null result allows us to impose constraints on axions with masses below $10^{-11} {\rm eV}$ by excluding the ones with decay constants ranging from $1.6\times10^{16} {\rm GeV}$ to $10^{18} {\rm GeV}$ at $3σ$ confidence level. Our analysis provides the fir…
We investigated realistic neutron stars in axion $R^{2}$ gravity. The coupling between curvature and axion field $ϕ$ is assumed in the simple form $\sim R^2ϕ$. For the axion mass in the range $m_{a}\sim 10^{-11}-10^{-10}$ eV the solitonic core within neutron star and corresponding halo with size $\sim 100$ km can exist. Therefore the effective contribution of $R^2$ term grows inside the star and it leads to change of star parameters (namely, mass and radius). We obtained the increase of star mass independent from central density for wide range of masses. Therefore, maximal possible mass for gi…
It is a well-known fact that compact gravitating objects admit bound state configurations for massive bosonic fields. In this work we describe a new class of superradiant instabilities of axion bound states in neutron star magnetospheres. The instability arises from the mixing of axion and photon modes in the magnetic field of the neutron star which extract energy from the rotating magnetosphere. Unlike for black holes, where the dissipation required for superradiance is provided by an absorbative horizon, the non-hermitian dynamics in this paper come from the resistivity in the stellar magnet…
Motivated by possible existence of stringy axions with ultralight mass, we study the behavior of an axion field around a rapidly rotating black hole (BH) obeying the sine-Gordon equation by numerical simulations. Due to superradiant instability, the axion field extracts the rotational energy of the BH and the nonlinear self-interaction becomes important as the field grows larger. We present clear numerical evidences that the nonlinear effect leads to a collapse of the axion cloud and a subsequent explosive phenomena, which is analogous to the "bosenova" observed in experiments of Bose-Einstein…
We construct and study rotating axion boson stars (RABSs). These are the spinning generalisations of the spherical gravitating solitons recently introduced in arXiv:1909.05515. RABSs are asymptotically flat, stationary, axially symmetric, everywhere regular solutions of the Einstein-Klein-Gordon theory, in the presence of a periodic scalar potential arising in models of axion-like particles. The potential is characterised by two parameters: the mass of the scalar field $m_a$ and the decay constant $f_a$. We present an overview of the solution space, for different values of $f_a$, and analyse s…
Ultra light axion fields, motivated by the string theory, form a large condensate (axion cloud) around rotating black holes through superradiant instability. Several effects due to the axion cloud, such as the spin-down of black holes and the emission of monochromatic gravitational waves, open a new window to search for axions by astrophysical observations. When the axion self-interaction is considered, the evolution of cloud is altered significantly, and an explosive phenomenon called bosenova can happen. Thus, it is necessary to understand the precise evolution of self-interacting clouds for…
In certain models of a QCD axion, finite density corrections to the axion potential can result in the axion being sourced by large dense objects. There are a variety of ways to test this phenomenon, but perhaps the most surprising effect is that the axion can mediate forces between neutron stars that can be as strong as gravity. These forces can be attractive or repulsive and their presence can be detected by Advanced LIGO observations of neutron star inspirals. By a numerical coincidence, axion forces between neutron stars with gravitational strength naturally have an associated length scale …
Axions are increasingly favoured as a candidate particle for the dark matter in galaxies, since they satisfy the observational requirements for cold dark matter and are theoretically well motivated. Fluctuations in the axion field give rise to stable localised overdensities known as axion stars, which, for the most massive, compact cases, are potential neutron star mimickers. In principle, there are no fundamental arguments against the multi-messenger observations of GW170817/GRB170817A/AT2017gfo arising from the merger of a neutron star with a neutron star mimicker, rather than from a binary …
We present a new solution to dilaton-axion gravity which looks like a rotating Bertotti-Robinson (BR) Universe. It is supported by an homogeneous Maxwell field and a linear axion and can be obtained as a near-horizon limit of extremal rotating dilaton-axion black holes. It has the isometry $SL(2,R)\times U(1)$ where U(1) is the remnant of the SO(3) symmetry of BR broken by rotation, while $SL(2,R)$ corresponds to the $AdS_2$ sector which no longer factors out of the full spacetime. Alternatively our solution can be obtained from the D=5 vacuum counterpart to the dyonic BR with equal electric a…
We present a brief review of general results about non-rotating neutron stars in simple R-square gravity and its extension with a scalar axion field. Modified Einstein equations are presented for metrics in isotropical coordinates. The mass-radius relation, mass profile and dependence of mass from central density on various equations of state are given in comparison to general relativity.
The QCD axion is a hypothetical particle motivated by the Strong CP problem of particle physics. One of the primary ways in which its existence can be inferred is via its function as an additional cooling channel in stars, with some of the strongest constraints coming from the supernova observation SN1987A. Multimessenger observations of binary neutron star mergers (such as those of GW170817, AT2017gfo, and GRB170817A) may provide another scenario in which such constraints could be obtained. In particular, the axion could potentially alter the lifetime, the ejection of material, and the emitte…
We present two rotating black hole solutions with axion $ξ$, dilaton $ϕ$ and two U(1) vector fields. By applying the "Newman-Janis trick" to a metric with 3 arbitrary parameters we find a rotating metric $g_{μν}$ with 4 such parameters $(M, a, Q_E, Q_M)$, and then a solution with this $g_{μν}$ as metric. Our solution is asymptotically flat and has angular momentum $J=M a$, gyromagnetic ratio $g=2$, two horizons, the singularities of Kerr's solution, axion and dilaton singular only for $r=a\cosθ=0$. Applying to the solution we have found the $S-$duality transformation we get a new solution, who…
Probing the QCD axion dark matter (DM) hypothesis is extremely challenging as the axion interacts very weakly with Standard Model particles. We propose a new avenue to test the QCD axion DM via transient radio signatures coming from encounters between neutron stars (NSs) and axion minihalos around primordial black holes (PBHs). We consider a general QCD axion scenario in which the PQ symmetry breaking occurs before (or during) inflation coexisting with a small fraction of DM in the form of PBHs. The PBHs will unavoidably acquire around them axion minihalos with the typical length scale of pars…
Chern-Simons gravity rotating Kerr-type black hole solutions are revisited from the point of view of their scalarization, namely examining the back reaction of pseudoscalar axion fields on the rotating geometry. To lowest order in an angular momentum expansion, and a long range approximation for both the axion field configuration and its back reaction onto the metric, such solutions had been discussed for the first time in the context of string theory. In this work, we extend the analysis to give analytic expressions for slowly rotating black holes outside the horizon, which formally include a…
The superradiant instability can lead to the generation of extremely dense axion clouds around rotating black holes. We show that, despite the long lifetime of the QCD axion with respect to spontaneous decay into photon pairs, stimulated decay becomes significant above a minimum axion density and leads to extremely bright lasers. The lasing threshold can be attained for axion masses $μ\gtrsim 10^{-8}\ \mathrm{eV}$, which implies superradiant instabilities around spinning primordial black holes with mass $\lesssim 0.01M_\odot$. Although the latter are expected to be non-rotating at formation, a…
String theory suggests the simultaneous presence of many ultralight axions possibly populating each decade of mass down to the Hubble scale 10^-33eV. Conversely the presence of such a plenitude of axions (an "axiverse") would be evidence for string theory, since it arises due to the topological complexity of the extra-dimensional manifold and is ad hoc in a theory with just the four familiar dimensions. We investigate how upcoming astrophysical experiments will explore the existence of such axions over a vast mass range from 10^-33eV to 10^-10eV. Axions with masses between 10^-33eV to 10^-28eV…
We construct sequences of rapidly rotating neutron stars in dilatonic Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory, employing two equations of state for the nuclear matter. We analyze the dependence of the physical properties of these neutron stars on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling strength. For a given equation of state we determine the physically relevant domain of rapidly rotating neutron stars, which is delimited by the set of neutron stars rotating at the Kepler limit, the set of neutron stars along the secular instability line, and the set of static neutron stars. As compared to Einstein gravity, the presenc…
In the last few decades, lots of universal relations between different global physical quantities of neutron stars have been proposed to constrain the unobservable or hard to be observed properties of neutron stars. But few of them are related to the gravitational redshift or the gravitational binding energy, especially for the fast rotating neutron stars. Here we will focus on the universal relations related to these two quantities. Based on 11 equations of state (EOSs) from the predictions of microscopic nuclear many-body theories for normal or hybrid neutron stars, we proposed a set of new …
Axions are a potential dark matter candidate, which may condense and form self gravitating compact objects, called axion stars (ASs). In this work, we study for the first time head-on collisions of relativistic ASs with black holes (BHs) and neutron stars (NSs). In the case of BH-AS mergers we find that, in general, the largest scalar clouds are produced by mergers of low compactness ASs and spinning BHs. Although in most of the cases which we study the majority of the mass is absorbed by the BH within a short time after the merger, in favourable cases the remaining cloud surrounding the final…
A new spectral code for constructing general-relativistic models of rapidly rotating stars with an unprecedented accuracy is presented. As a first application, we reexamine uniformly rotating homogeneous stars and compare our results with those obtained by several previous codes. Moreover, representative relativistic examples corresponding to highly flattened rotating bodies are given.
Gravitational wave observation has the potential of probing ultralight bosonic fields such as axion. Axion forms a cloud around a rotating black hole (BH) by superradiant instability and should affect the gravitational waveform from binary BHs. On the other hand, considering the cloud associated with a BH in a binary system, tidal interaction depletes the cloud in some cases during the inspiral phase. We made the exhaustive study of cloud depletion numerically in a wide parameter range for equal mass binaries, assuming only the quadrupolar tidal perturbation is at work. We found that clouds ca…
This note describes fitting formulae for the gravitational waveforms generated by a rapidly rotating neutron star (e.g., newly-formed in the core collapse of a supernova) as it evolves from an initial axisymmetric configuration toward a triaxial ellipsoid.
After an introduction to the QCD phase diagram, the nuclear equations of state, and neutron star mergers, I discuss three projects related to transport and nuclear matter in neutron star mergers. The first is the nature of beta equilibrium in the portion of a merger that is transparent to neutrinos. We calculate the weak interaction (Urca) rates and find that the beta equilibrium condition needs to be modified by adding an additional chemical potential, which changes slightly the particle content in neutrino-transparent beta equilibrium. Secondly, we calculate the bulk viscosity in neutrino-tr…
Using a fully general relativistic implementation of ideal magnetohydrodynamics with no assumed symmetries in three spatial dimensions, the dynamics of magnetized, rigidly rotating neutron stars are studied. Beginning with fully consistent initial data constructed with Magstar, part of the Lorene project, we study the dynamics and stability of rotating, magnetized polytropic stars as models of neutron stars. Evolutions suggest that some of these rotating, magnetized stars may be minimally unstable occurring at the threshold of black hole formation.
We present rapidly rotating neutron stars featuring wormholes in their centers. They arise in general relativity in the presence of a ghost scalar field. The nuclear matter is described by a polytropic equation of state, yielding realistic masses and radii for the neutron stars. The wormholes possess small circumferential radii of size up to 3 km. With increasing wormhole size, the masses and radii of the stars decrease, while the domain of existence of these rotating mixed neutron-star-plus-wormhole systems retains the characteristic properties of a rotating neutron star domain. The question …
A four-parameter class of exact asymptotically flat solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations involving only rational functions is presented. It is able to describe the exterior field of a slowly or rapidly rotating neutron star with poloidal magnetic field.
We construct relativistic equilibrium models of differentially rotating neutron stars and show that they can support significantly more mass than their nonrotating or uniformly rotating counterparts. We dynamically evolve such ``hypermassive'' models in full general relativity and show that there do exist configurations which are dynamically stable against radial collapse and bar formation. Our results suggest that the remnant of binary neutron star coalescence may be temporarily stabilized by differential rotation, leading to delayed collapse and a delayed gravitational wave burst.
In this review we summarize the current understanding of the gravitational-wave driven instability associated with the so-called r-modes in rotating neutron stars. We discuss the nature of the r-modes, the detailed mechanics of the instability and its potential astrophysical significance. In particular we discuss results regarding the spin-evolution of nascent neutron stars, the detectability of r-mode gravitational waves and mechanisms limiting the spin-rate of accreting neutron stars in binary systems.
