We investigated realistic neutron stars in axion $R^{2}$ gravity. The coupling between curvature and axion field $ϕ$ is assumed in the simple form $\sim R^2ϕ$. For the axion mass in the range $m_{a}\sim 10^{-11}-10^{-10}$ eV the solitonic core within neutron star and corresponding halo with size $\sim 100$ km can exist. Therefore the effective contribution of $R^2$ term grows inside the star and it leads to change of star parameters (namely, mass and radius). We obtained the increase of star mass independent from central density for wide range of masses. Therefore, maximal possible mass for given equation of state grows. At the same time, the star radius increases not so considerably in comparison with GR. {Hence, our model may predict possible existence of supermassive compact stars with masses $M\sim 2.2-2.3M_\odot$ and radii $R_{s}\sim 11$ km for realistic equation of state (we considered APR equation of state). In General Relativity one can obtain neutron stars with such characteristics only for unrealistic, extremely stiff equations of state.} Note that this increase of mass occurs due to change of solution for scalar curvature outside the star. In GR curvature drops to zero on star surface where $ρ=p=0$. In the model under consideration the scalar curvature dumps more slowly in comparison with vacuum $R^2$ gravity due to axion "galo" around the star.
Light axion fields, if they exist, can be sourced by neutron stars due to their coupling to nuclear matter, and play a role in binary neutron star mergers. We report on a search for such axions by analysing the gravitational waves from the binary neutron star inspiral GW170817. We find no evidence of axions in the sampled parameter space. The null result allows us to impose constraints on axions with masses below $10^{-11} {\rm eV}$ by excluding the ones with decay constants ranging from $1.6\times10^{16} {\rm GeV}$ to $10^{18} {\rm GeV}$ at $3σ$ confidence level. Our analysis provides the fir…
We investigate equilibrium configurations of uniformly rotating neutron stars in $R^2$ gravity with axion scalar field for GM1 equation of state (EoS) for nuclear matter. The mass-radius diagram, mass-central energy density are presented for some frequencies in comparison with static stars. We also compute equatorial and polar radii and moment of inertia for stars. For axion field $ϕ$ the coupling in the form $\sim R^2ϕ$ is assumed. Several interesting results follow from our consideration. Maximal possible star mass with given EoS increases due to the contribution of coupling term. We discove…
Very recently a compact object with a mass in the range $2.50÷2.67\, M_{\odot}$ has been discovered via gravitational waves detection of a compact binary coalescence. The mass of this object makes it among the heaviest neutron star never detected or the lightest black hole ever observed. Here we show that a neutron star with this observed mass, can be consistently explained with the mass-radius relation obtained by Extended Theories of Gravity. Furthermore, equations of state, consistent with LIGO observational constraints, are adopted. We consider also the influence of rotation and show that …
It is a well-known fact that compact gravitating objects admit bound state configurations for massive bosonic fields. In this work we describe a new class of superradiant instabilities of axion bound states in neutron star magnetospheres. The instability arises from the mixing of axion and photon modes in the magnetic field of the neutron star which extract energy from the rotating magnetosphere. Unlike for black holes, where the dissipation required for superradiance is provided by an absorbative horizon, the non-hermitian dynamics in this paper come from the resistivity in the stellar magnet…
In certain models of a QCD axion, finite density corrections to the axion potential can result in the axion being sourced by large dense objects. There are a variety of ways to test this phenomenon, but perhaps the most surprising effect is that the axion can mediate forces between neutron stars that can be as strong as gravity. These forces can be attractive or repulsive and their presence can be detected by Advanced LIGO observations of neutron star inspirals. By a numerical coincidence, axion forces between neutron stars with gravitational strength naturally have an associated length scale …
With high spatial resolution, polarimetric imaging of a supermassive black hole, like M87$^\star$ or Sgr A$^\star$, by the Event Horizon Telescope can be used to probe the existence of ultralight bosonic particles, such as axions. Such particles can accumulate around a rotating black hole through the superradiance mechanism, forming an axion cloud. When linearly polarized photons are emitted from an accretion disk near the horizon, their position angles oscillate due to the birefringent effect when traveling through the axion background. In particular, the observations of supermassive black ho…
Axions are increasingly favoured as a candidate particle for the dark matter in galaxies, since they satisfy the observational requirements for cold dark matter and are theoretically well motivated. Fluctuations in the axion field give rise to stable localised overdensities known as axion stars, which, for the most massive, compact cases, are potential neutron star mimickers. In principle, there are no fundamental arguments against the multi-messenger observations of GW170817/GRB170817A/AT2017gfo arising from the merger of a neutron star with a neutron star mimicker, rather than from a binary …
An axion cloud surrounding a supermassive black hole can be naturally produced through the superradiance process. Its existence can be examined by the axion induced birefringence effect. It predicts an oscillation of the electric vector position angle of linearly polarized radiations. Stringent constraints of the existence of the axion in a particular mass window has been obtained based on the recent Event Horizon Telescope measurement on M87$^\star$. The future Very-Long-Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations will be able to measure the vicinity of many supermassive black holes, thus it …
We first consider local cosmic strings in dilaton-axion gravity and show that they are singular solutions. Then we take a supermassive Higgs limit and present expressions for the fields at far distances from the core by applying a Pecci-Quinn and a duality transformation to the dilatonic Melvin's magnetic universe.
We present a brief review of general results about non-rotating neutron stars in simple R-square gravity and its extension with a scalar axion field. Modified Einstein equations are presented for metrics in isotropical coordinates. The mass-radius relation, mass profile and dependence of mass from central density on various equations of state are given in comparison to general relativity.
The QCD axion is a hypothetical particle motivated by the Strong CP problem of particle physics. One of the primary ways in which its existence can be inferred is via its function as an additional cooling channel in stars, with some of the strongest constraints coming from the supernova observation SN1987A. Multimessenger observations of binary neutron star mergers (such as those of GW170817, AT2017gfo, and GRB170817A) may provide another scenario in which such constraints could be obtained. In particular, the axion could potentially alter the lifetime, the ejection of material, and the emitte…
We study the prospects of detecting continuous gravitational waves (CGWs) from spinning neutron stars (NSs), gravitationally lensed by the galactic supermassive black hole. Assuming various astrophysically motivated spatial distributions of galactic NSs, we find that CGW signals from a few ($\sim 0-6$) neutron stars should be strongly lensed. Lensing will produce two copies of the signal (with time delays of seconds to minutes) that will interfere with each other. The relative motion of the NS with respect to the lensing optical axis will change the interference pattern, which will help us to …
Probing the QCD axion dark matter (DM) hypothesis is extremely challenging as the axion interacts very weakly with Standard Model particles. We propose a new avenue to test the QCD axion DM via transient radio signatures coming from encounters between neutron stars (NSs) and axion minihalos around primordial black holes (PBHs). We consider a general QCD axion scenario in which the PQ symmetry breaking occurs before (or during) inflation coexisting with a small fraction of DM in the form of PBHs. The PBHs will unavoidably acquire around them axion minihalos with the typical length scale of pars…
Axions are a potential dark matter candidate, which may condense and form self gravitating compact objects, called axion stars (ASs). In this work, we study for the first time head-on collisions of relativistic ASs with black holes (BHs) and neutron stars (NSs). In the case of BH-AS mergers we find that, in general, the largest scalar clouds are produced by mergers of low compactness ASs and spinning BHs. Although in most of the cases which we study the majority of the mass is absorbed by the BH within a short time after the merger, in favourable cases the remaining cloud surrounding the final…
The postmerger gravitational-wave (GW) signal of a binary neutron star (BNS) merger is expected to contain valuable information that could shed light on the equation of state (EOS) of NSs, the properties of the matter produced during the merger, as well as the nature of any potential intermediate merger product such as hypermassive or supramassive NSs. However, the postmerger lies in the high frequency regime ($ \gtrsim 1000 $ Hz) where current LIGO-Virgo detectors are insensitive. While proposed detectors such as NEMO, Cosmic Explorer and Einstein Telescope could potentially detect the postme…
After an introduction to the QCD phase diagram, the nuclear equations of state, and neutron star mergers, I discuss three projects related to transport and nuclear matter in neutron star mergers. The first is the nature of beta equilibrium in the portion of a merger that is transparent to neutrinos. We calculate the weak interaction (Urca) rates and find that the beta equilibrium condition needs to be modified by adding an additional chemical potential, which changes slightly the particle content in neutrino-transparent beta equilibrium. Secondly, we calculate the bulk viscosity in neutrino-tr…
The hitherto unprecedented angular resolution of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) has created exciting opportunities in the search for new physics. Recently, the linear polarization of radiation emitted near the supermassive black hole M87$^\star$ was measured on four separate days, precisely enabling tests of the existence of a dense axion cloud produced by a spinning black hole. The presence of an axion cloud leads to a frequency-independent oscillation in the electric vector position angle (EVPA) of this linear polarization. For a nearly face-on M87$^\star$, this oscillation in the EVPA ap…
If the dark matter is made of ultra-light axions, stable solitonic cores form at the centers of virialized halos. In some range for the mass $m$ of the axion particle, these cores are sufficiently compact and can mimic supermassive black holes (SMBH) residing at galactic nuclei. We use the solitonic core--halo mass relation, validated in numerical simulations, to constrain a new range of allowed axion mass from measurements of the SMBH mass in (pseudo)bulge and bulgeless galaxies. These limits are based on observations of galactic nuclei on scales smaller than 10 pc. Our analysis suggests that…
Capture rates of compact objects were calculated by using a recent solution of the Fokker-Planck equation in energy-space, including two-body resonant effects. The fraction of compact objects (white dwarfs, neutron stars and stellar black holes) was estimated as a function of the luminosity of the galaxy from a new grid of evolutionary models. Stellar mass densities at the influence radius of central supermassive black holes were derived from brightness profiles obtained by Hubble Space Telescope observations. The present study indicates that the capture rates scale as $\propto M_{bh}^{-1.048}…
