We present rapidly rotating neutron stars featuring wormholes in their centers. They arise in general relativity in the presence of a ghost scalar field. The nuclear matter is described by a polytropic equation of state, yielding realistic masses and radii for the neutron stars. The wormholes possess small circumferential radii of size up to 3 km. With increasing wormhole size, the masses and radii of the stars decrease, while the domain of existence of these rotating mixed neutron-star-plus-wormhole systems retains the characteristic properties of a rotating neutron star domain. The question of stability of the mixed configurations under consideration is briefly discussed.
We present rotating wormhole solutions in General Relativity, which are supported by a phantom scalar field. These solutions evolve from the static Ellis wormhole, when the throat is set into rotation. As the rotational velocity increases, the throat deforms until at a maximal value of the rotational velocity, an extremal Kerr solution is encountered. The rotating wormholes attain a finite mass and quadrupole moment. They exhibit ergospheres and possess bound orbits.
In this paper, the gravitational wave generation by a slowly rotating thin-shell wormhole is considered. Since the rotating thin-shell wormhole is assumed to be an axisymmetric rigid body, the rotation axis coincides with the largest principal axis which means there is no precession motion. However, if there is a perturbation in the angular velocity, the rotating wormhole can move with precession by perturbation which make arise the gravitational waves. We derive the gravitational wave spectrum, energy loss rate, and angular momentum loss rate.
The existing solutions to the Einstein equations describing rotating cylindrical wormholes are not asymptotically flat and therefore cannot describe wormhole entrances as local objects in our Universe. To overcome this difficulty, flat asymptotic regions are added to wormhole solutions by matching them at some surfaces $Σ_-$ and $Σ_+$. It is shown, however, that if the wormhole solution is obtained for scalar fields with arbitrary potentials, possibly interacting with an azimuthal electric or magnetic field, then the matter content of one or both thin shells appearing on $Σ_-$ and $Σ_+$ violat…
We cut and paste two Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) spacetimes at a throat by the Darmois-Israel method to construct a rotating wormhole with a thin shell filled with a barotropic fluid. The thin shell at the throat and both sides of the throat corotate. We investigate the linear stability of the thin shell of the rotating wormhole against radial perturbations. We show that the wormhole becomes more and more stable the larger its angular momentum is until the angular momentum reaches a critical value and that the behavior of a condition for stability significantly changes when the angular mo…
In this paper the deflection angle of light by a rotating Teo wormhole spacetime is calculated in the weak limit approximation. We mainly focus on the weak deflection angle by revealing the gravitational lensing as a partially global topological effect. We apply the Gauss-Bonnet theorem (GBT) to the optical geometry osculating the Teo-Randers wormhole optical geometry to calculate the deflection angle. Furthermore we find the same result using the standard geodesic method. We have found that the deflection angle can be written as a sum of two terms, namely the first term is proportional to the…
It is well-known that traversable wormhole solutions to the Einstein equations require the existence of an exotic matter source violating the null energy condition. An apparent exception is the overcharged Kerr-Newman-NUT solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations, which has all the properties of a geodesically complete, traversable wormhole spacetime. We show that the exotic matter sourcing this consists in two counter-rotating tensionless straight cosmic strings -- the Misner-Dirac strings -- which, as expected, violate the null energy condition. The wormhole possesses an ergoregion, but no …
We consider rotating Lorentzian wormholes with a phantom field in five dimensions. These wormhole solutions possess equal angular momenta and thus represent cohomogeneity-1 configurations. For a given size of the throat, the angular momenta are bounded by the value of the corresponding extremal Myers-Perry black hole, which represents the limiting configuration. With increasing angular momenta the throat becomes increasingly deformed. At the same time, the violation of the null energy condition decreases to zero, as the limiting configuration is approached. Symmetric wormhole solutions satisfy…
In a collisional Penrose process, two particles coming from the asymptotically flat region collide in the ergosphere of a compact object. The collision produces two new particles, one with positive energy and one with negative energy. When the particle with positive energy escapes to infinity, the process extracts energy from the compact object. In this paper, we study the collisional Penrose process in a rotating wormhole spacetime. We consider the simple case of a head-on collision at the throat of a Teo wormhole. We find that the process of energy extraction from a Teo wormhole can be subst…

We study scalar test-field perturbations on top of a Kerr--black-bounce background, i.e. a family of rotating regular black holes and/or rotating traversable wormholes that can mimic Kerr black holes. We compute the quasi-normal modes for a massless field in both the regular black holes and wormhole branches, confirming the stability of the former and identifying a set of growing modes that renders the latter unstable. We further compute the superradiance amplification factors, for massless and massive fields, in the regular black hole branch, confirming that these objects superradiate, though…
A central problem in General Relativity is obtaining a solution to describe the source's interior counterpart for Kerr black hole. Besides, determining a method to match the interior and exterior solutions through a surface free of predefined coordinates remains an open problem. In this work, we present the ansatz formulated by Newman-Janis to generate solutions to the Einstein field equation inspired by the mentioned problems. We present a collection of independent classes of exact interior solutions of the Einstein equation describing rotating fluids with anisotropic pressures. Furthermore, …
In this work, we investigated the motion of spinning test particles around a rotating wormhole, extending, in this way, the previous work of Benavides-Gallego et al. in [Phys. Rev. D 101, no.12, 124024] to the general case. Using the Mathisson-Papapetrous-Dixon equations, we study the effective potential, circular orbits, and the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) of spinning test particles. We found that both the particle and wormhole spins affect the location of the ISCO significantly. On the other hand, Similar to the non-rotating case, we also found two possible configurations in the e…
We demonstrate that rotating matter sets the throat of an Ellis wormhole into rotation, allowing for wormholes which possess full reflection symmetry with respect to the two asymptotically flat spacetime regions. We analyze the properties of this new type of rotating wormholes and show that the wormhole geometry can change from a single throat to a double throat configuration. We further discuss the ergoregions and the lightring structure of these wormholes.
We consider Ellis wormholes immersed in rotating matter in the form of an ordinary complex boson field. The resulting wormholes may possess full reflection symmetry with respect to the two asymptotically flat spacetime regions. However, there arise also wormhole solutions where the reflection symmetry is broken. The latter always appear in pairs. We analyse the properties of these rotating wormholes and show that their geometry may feature single throats or double throats. We also discuss the ergoregions and the lightring structure of these wormholes.
We construct a rotating thin-shell wormhole using a Myers-Perry black hole in five dimensions, using the Darmois-Israel junction conditions. The stability of the wormhole is analyzed under perturbations. We find that exotic matter is required at the throat of the wormhole to keep it stable. Our analysis shows that stability of the rotating thin-shell wormhole is possible if suitable parameter values are chosen.

In this work we wonder if there is a way to generate a wormhole (WH) in nature using "normal" matter. In order to give a first answer to this question, we study a massless scalar field coupled to an electromagnetic one (dilatonic field) with an arbitrary coupling constant, as source of gravitation. We obtain an exact solution of the Einstein equations using this source that represents a magnetized rotating WH. This space-time has a naked ring singularity, probably untouchable as in \cite{Matos:2012gj}, but otherwise regular. The WH throat lies on the disc bounded by the ring singularity, which…
The problem of the distribution of axionlike particle, being the model of dark matter, in the nearby of rotating wormholes has been investigated numerically. In the model in question the axion scalar is non-trivially coupled to the Maxwell gauge field. We consider two toy models of rotating wormholes embedded in magnetic field, Kerr-like and Teo rotating wormholes. Moreover one assumes that the matter fields will not backreact on the wormhole spacetimes, i.e., we shall study the problem in the probe limit case. We point out the differences in the distribution of dark matter comparing to the lo…
We study shadows cast by a certain class of rotating wormholes and point out the crucial role of a rotating wormhole throat in the formation of a shadow. Overlooking this crucial role of a wormhole throat has resulted incomplete results in the previous studies on shadows of the same class of rotating wormholes. We explore the dependence of the shadows on the spin of the wormholes. We compare our results with that of the Kerr black hole. With increasing values of the spin, the shapes of the wormhole shadows start deviating considerably from that of the black hole. Such considerable deviation, i…
We construct a model of a rotating wormhole made by cutting and pasting two Kerr spacetimes. As a result, we obtain a rotating thin-shell wormhole with exotic matter at the throat. Two candidates for the exotic matter are considered: (i) a perfect fluid; (ii) an anisotropic fluid. We show that a perfect fluid is unable to support a rotating thin-shall wormhole. On the contrary, the anisotropic fluid with the negative energy density can be a source for such a geometry.
We consider rotating wormhole solutions supported by a complex phantom scalar field with a quartic self-interaction, where the phantom field induces the rotation of the spacetime. The solutions are regular and asymptotically flat. A subset of solutions describing static but not spherically symmetric wormholes is also obtained.

We consider configurations consisting of a neutron star with a wormhole at the core. The wormhole is held open by a ghost scalar field with a quartic coupling. The neutron matter is described by a perfect fluid with a polytropic equation of state. We obtain static regular solutions for these systems. A stability analysis, however, shows that they are unstable with respect to linear perturbations.
In this paper, using the recent method proposed by Ono, Ishihara and Asada (OIA) who extend the idea of Gibbons and Werner to the stationary and axisymmetric case, we apply the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to the optical metric of the non-rotating and rotating Damour-Solodukhin wormholes spacetimes to study the weak gravitational lensing by these objects. Furthermore, we study the strong gravitational lensing by the non-rotating Damour-Solodukhin wormholes using the Bozza's method to see the differences between the weak lensing and the strong lensing. We demonstrate the relation between the strong def…
Lack of a consistent metric for generating rotating wormholes motivates us to present a new one endowed with interesting physical and geometrical properties. When combined with the generalized method of superposition of fields, which consists in attaching a form of matter to each moving frame, it generates massive and charged (charge without charge) two-fluid-sourced, massive and two-charged three-fluid-sourced, rotating as well as new static wormholes which, otherwise, can hardly be derived by integration. If the lapse function of the static wormhole is bounded from above, no closed timelike …
We explore the shadow of certain class of rotating traversable wormholes within classical general relativity. The images depend on the angular momentum of the wormhole, and the inclination angle of the observer. We compare the results with the case of the Kerr black hole. For small angular momenta the shadows for the two solutions are nearly identical, however with the increasing of the angular momentum they start to deviate considerably.
We briefly discuss some of the known and new properties of rotating geometries that are relevant to this work. We generalize the analytical method of superposition of fields, known for generating nonrotating solutions, and apply it to construct massless and massive rotating physical wormholes sourced by a source-free electromagnetic field and an exotic fluid both anisotropic. Their stress-energy tensors are presented in compact and general forms. For the massive rotating wormholes there exists a mass-charge constraint yielding almost no more dragging effects than ordinary stars. There are coni…
We revisit the shadow of rotating traversable wormholes discussing the role of the wormhole throat in the shadow formation. For certain classes of wormholes the throat serves as a potential barrier for light rays with particular impact parameters, thus modifying the shadow shape. We consider a couple of wormhole solutions and examine the structure of their shadow images, and the intrinsic mechanisms for their formation. Some of the shadows possess cuspy edges, which arise due to the interplay of two distinct families of unstable spherical orbits. These solutions provide examples, in which the …
The role of angular momentum in a 2+1-dimensional rotating thin-shell wormhole (TSW) is considered. Particular emphasis is made on stability when the shells (rings) are counterrotating. We find that counter-rotating halves make the TSW supported by the equation of state of a linear gas more stable. Under a small velocity dependent perturbation, however, it becomes unstable.
A particle moving on curved magnetic field lines in the wormhole metrics is considered. The dynamics of a single particle is studied on a co-rotating parameterized magnetic field line. Being interested in the force-free dynamics we choose the rotating Archimedes' spiral embedded in the generalized Ellis-Bronnikov metrics. By analysing the phase space, we explore how the physical parameters affect the motion of the particle and it is shown that the particles may reach the force free regime, eventually escaping the wormhole.
We analyze the properties of the circular orbits for massive particles in the equatorial plane of symmetric rotating Ellis wormholes. In particular, we obtain the orbital frequencies and the radial and vertical epicyclic frequencies, and consider their lowest parametric, forced and Keplerian resonances. These show that quasi-periodic oscillations in accretion disks around symmetric rotating Ellis wormholes have many distinct properties as compared to quasi-periodic oscillations in accretion disks around rotating Teo wormholes and the Kerr black hole. Still we can distinguish some common featur…
We consider four-dimensional wormholes immersed in bosonic matter. While their existence is based on the presence of a phantom field, many of their interesting physical properties are bestowed upon them by an ordinary complex scalar field, which carries only a mass term, but no self-interactions. For instance, the rotation of the scalar field induces a rotation of the throat as well. Moreover, the bosonic matter need not be symmetrically distributed in both asymptotically flat regions, leading to symmetric and asymmetric rotating wormhole spacetimes. The presence of the rotating matter also al…
We consider mixed strongly gravitating configurations consisting of a wormhole threaded by two types of ordinary matter. For such systems, the possibility of obtaining static spherically symmetric solutions describing compact massive central objects enclosed by high-redshift surfaces (black-hole-like configurations) is studied. Using the standard thin accretion disk model, we exhibit potentially observable differences allowing to distinguish the mixed systems from ordinary black holes with the same masses.
A new rotating generalization of the Damour-Solodukhin wormhole (RDSWH), called Kerr-like wormhole, has recently been proposed and investigated by Bueno \textit{et al} for echoes in the gravitational wave signal. We show a novel feature of the RDSWH, viz., that the kinematic properties such as the ISCO\ or marginally stable radius $r_{\text{ms}}$, efficiency $ε$ and the disk potential $V_{\text{eff}}$ are \textit{independent} of $λ$ (which means they are identical to their KBH counterparts for any given spin). Differences however appear in the emissivity properties for higher values $0.1<λ\leq…
