In the present article we have investigated a very natural question regarding the dynamics of the universe, namely, the possibility of its decelerating phase immediately after the present accelerating phase. To begin with, we have focused on the matter creation theory which is considered to be a viable alternative to dark energy and modified gravity models. Moreover, we have introduced the cosmographic approach which allows us to express the free parameters of a cosmological model in terms of the known cosmographic parameters. Assuming a generalized matter creation rate we have discussed the theoretical bounds on the model parameters allowing the future deceleration of the universe. Moreover, using the observational bounds on the cosmographic parameters obtained from the low redshifts observational probes, we have also examined the chance of a decelerating phase of the universe. Finally, considering a variety of known cosmological models and parametrizations, we have tested the same possibility. Our analysis shows that the chance of a future decelerating expansion of the universe is highly dependent on the choice of the cosmological models and parametrizations and also on the observational data. Even though the future decelerating expansion is allowed in some cosmological frameworks, but we do not see any strong evidence in favor of this. Perhaps, the future cosmological surveys could offer some more information regarding the fate of the universe.
The transient acceleration which the current cosmic acceleration is not eternal is possible by introducing the interaction between dark matter and dark energy. If the energy transfer is from dark energy to dark matter, then it is possible to realize the transient acceleration. We study the possibility of transient acceleration by considering two time-dependent phenomenological interaction forms so that the energy transfer increases as the universe evolves. Starting from a simple and extending to a more complicated ansatz, we obtain analytical expressions for the evolutions of the deceleration …
We explore cosmological consequences of two quintessence models in which the current cosmic acceleration is a transient phenomenon. We argue that one of them (in which the EoS parameter switches from freezing to thawing regimes) may reconcile the slight preference of observational data for freezing potentials with the impossibility of defining observables in String/M-theory due to the existence of a cosmological event horizon in asymptotically de Sitter universes.
The present day accelerated expansion of the universe is naturally addressed within the Brans-Dicke theory just by using holographic dark energy model with inverse of Hubble scale as IR cutoff. It is also concluded that if the universe continues to expand, then one day it might be completely filled with dark energy.
Recent investigations seem to favor a cosmological dynamics according to which the accelerated expansion of the Universe may have already peaked and is now slowing down again \cite{sastaro}. As a consequence, the cosmic acceleration may be a transient phenomenon. We investigate a toy model that reproduces such a background behavior as the result of a time-dependent coupling in the dark sector which implies a cancelation of the "bare" cosmological constant. With the help of a statistical analysis of Supernova Type Ia (SNIa) data we demonstrate that for a certain parameter combination a transien…
We show that in the exponential $f(T)$ model studied by E. Linder [arXiv:1005.3039, Phys.Rev.D 81, 127301 (2010)], it is impossible to have the crossing of the phantom divide line $w_{\mathrm{DE}}=-1$.
In order to study if the anisotropy of the spacetime may induce differences in the cosmic shear or in deceleration parameter we investigate in Bianchi I Universe the most general expression for the cosmic shear and we study the connections between deceleration parameter and cosmic shear. We also consider a shear parametric approach to measure the transition from decelerating to an accelerating Universe. We also study the connection between jerk parameter and ellipsoidal Universe.
In this paper we introduce a LTB-Bianchi I (plane symmetric) model of Universe. We study and solve Einstein field equations. We investigate the effects of such model of Universe in particular these results are important in understanding the effect of the combined presence of an inhomogeneous and anisotropic Universe. The observational magnitude-redshift data deviated from UNION 2 catalog has been analyzed in the framework of this LTB-anisotropic Universe and the fit has been achieved without the inclusion of any dark energy.
We propose an interpretation of the expansion and acceleration of the Universe from an information theoretic viewpoint. We obtain the time evolution of the configuration entropy of the mass distribution in a static Universe and show that the process of gravitational instability leads to a rapid dissipation of configuration entropy during the growth of the density fluctuations making such a Universe entropically unfavourable. We find that in an expanding Universe, the configuration entropy rate is governed by the expansion rate of the Universe and the growth rate of density fluctuations. The co…
A general formalism for the investigation of the late time dynamics of the universe for any analytic f(R) gravity model, along with a cold dark matter, has been discussed in the present work. The formalism is then elucidated with two examples. The values of the parameters of the models are chosen in such a way that they are consistent with the basic observational requirement.
By using exclusively the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect and X-ray surface brightness data from 25 galaxy clusters in the redshift range 0.023< z < 0.784 we access cosmic acceleration employing a kinematic description. Such result is fully independent on the validity of any metric gravity theory, the possible matter-energy contents filling the Universe, as well as on the SNe Ia Hubble diagram.
We show that the general solution of scalar field cosmology in $d$ dimensions with exponential potentials for flat Robertson-Walker metric can be found in a straightforward way by introducing new variables which completely decouple the system. The explicit solution shows the region of parameters where the expansion has eternal acceleration, transient periods of acceleration, or no period of acceleration at all. In the cases of transient acceleration, the energy density exhibits a plateau during the accelerated expansion, where $p\cong -ρ$, due to dominance of potential energy. We determine the…
Spacetime curvature plays the primary role in general relativity but Einstein later considered a theory where torsion was the central quantity. Just as the Einstein-Hilbert action in the Ricci curvature scalar R can be generalized to f(R) gravity, we consider extensions of teleparallel, or torsion scalar T, gravity to f(T) theories. The field equations are naturally second order, avoiding pathologies, and can give rise to cosmic acceleration with unique features.
According to the standard $Λ$CDM model, the accelerated expansion of the Universe will go on forever. Motivated by recent observational results, we explore the possibility of a finite phase of acceleration which asymptotically approaches another period of decelerated expansion. Extending an earlier study on a corresponding homogeneous and isotropic dynamics, in which interactions between dark matter and dark energy are crucial, the present paper also investigates the dynamics of the matter perturbations both on the Newtonian and GR levels and quantifies the potential relevance of perturbations…
We study Galileon scalar field model by considering the lowest order Galileon term in the lagrangian, $(\partial_μ ϕ)^2 \Boxϕ$ by invoking a field potential. We use Statefinder hierarchy to distinguish the light mass galileon models with different potentials amongst themselves and from the $Λ$CDM behaviour. The $Om$ diagnostic is applied to cosmological dynamics and observational constraints on the model parameters are studied using SN+Hubble+BAO data.
We extend the Chaplygin gas model for dark matter and dark energy unification by promoting the Chaplygin gas parameter A to the potential for an extra scalar with canonical kinetic energy. The hybrid model allows for accelerated Hubble expansion to be a transient effect around redshift zero.
We consider Double Quintessence models for which the Dark Energy sector consists of two coupled scalar fields. We study in particular the possibility to have a transient acceleration in these models. In both Double Quintessence models studied here, it is shown that if acceleration occurs, it is necessarily transient. We consider also the possibility to have transient acceleration in two one-field models, the Albrecht-Skordis model and the pure exponential. Using separate conservative constraints (marginalizing over the other parameters) on the effective equation of state $w_{eff}$, the relativ…
Recently a $f(T)$ gravity based on the modification of the teleparallel gravity was proposed to explain the accelerated expansion of the universe without the need of dark energy. We use observational data from Type Ia Supernovae, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations, and Cosmic Microwave Background to constrain this $f(T)$ theory and reconstruct the effective equation of state and the deceleration parameter. We obtain the best-fit values of parameters and find an interesting result that the $f(T)$ theory considered here allows for the accelerated Hubble expansion to be a transient effect.
One possibility for explaining the apparent accelerating expansion of the universe is that we live in the center of a spherically inhomogeneous universe. Although current observations cannot fully distinguish $Λ$CDM and these inhomogeneous models, direct measurement of the acceleration of the universe can be a powerful tool in probing them. We have shown that, if $Λ$CDM is the correct model, DECIGO/BBO would be able to detect the positive redshift drift (which is the time evolution of the source redshift $z$) in 3--5 year gravitational wave (GW) observations from neutron-star binaries, which e…
In this paper we attempt to answer to the question: can cosmic acceleration of the Universe have a fractal solution? We give an exact solution of a Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) Universe based on the assumption that such a smooth metric is able to describe, on average, a fractal distribution of matter. While the LTB model has a center, we speculate that, when the fractal dimension is not very different from the space dimension, this metric applies to any point of the fractal structure when chosen as center so that, on average, there is not any special point or direction. We examine the observed …
Motivated by two seminal models proposed to explain the Universe acceleration, this paper is devoted to study a hybrid model which is constructed through a generalized Chaplygin gas with the addition of a bulk viscosity. We call the model a Viscous Generalized Chaplygin Gas (VGCG) and its free parameters are constrained through several cosmological data like the Observational Hubble Parameter, Type Ia Supernovae, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations, Strong Lensing Systems, HII Galaxies and using Joint Bayesian analysis. In addition, we implement a Om-diagnostic to analyze the VGCC dynamics and its di…
In this work we study an alternative topological model for explaining the observed acceleration of space-time, we answer the question of whether this acceleration could be a consequence of the topology of the universe. For doing that, we propose that the whole universe is composed of a four dimensional base space, which represents space-time, endowed with a fiber forming a principal fiber bundle. We analyze this hypothesis for a homogeneous and isotropic four dimensional space-time and show that the effect of the fiber onto the base space is that the space-time accelerates depending on the gro…
We consider 1+3 dimensional maximally symmetric Minkowski brane embedded in a 1+4 dimensional maximally symmetric Minkowski background. The resulting 1+3 dimensional effective field theory is of DBI (Dirac-Born-Infeld) Galileon type. We use this model to study the late time acceleration of the universe. We study the deviation of the model from the concordance ΛCDM behaviour. Finally we put constraints on the model parameters using various observational data.
A nonminimally coupled quintessence dark energy in teleparallel model of gravity is considered. It is clarified how a matter dominated universe with initial negligible dark energy density can evolve to a late time de Sitter space-time via the $Z_2$ symmetry breaking.
It is shown that using of the equation of motion of the Universe scale factor allows calculation of the contribution of the vacuum fluctuations to the acceleration of the Universe expansion. Renormalization of the equation is needed only in the case of massive particles. Under a known number of the different kinds of fundamental fields, this provides determination of momentum of the ultraviolet cut-off from the observed value of acceleration.
In this paper we study the occurrence of accelerating universe versus decelerating universe between the F(R) gravity frame (Jordan frame) and non-minimally coupled scalar field theory frame, and the minimally coupled scalar field theory frame (Einstein frame) for various models. As we show, if acceleration is imposed in one frame, it will not necessarily correspond to an accelerating metric when transformed in another frame. As we will demonstrate, this issue is model and frame-dependent but it seems there is no general scheme which permits to classify such cases.
In this letter, we have assumed that the Universe is filled in tachyonic field with potential, which gives the acceleration of the Universe. For certain choice of potential, we have found the exact solutions of the field equations. We have shown the decaying nature of potential. From recently developed statefinder parameters, we have investigated the role of tachyonic field in different stages of the evolution of the Universe.
Starting from the generalized Raychaudhuri equation with torsion and non-metricity, and considering an FLRW spacetime we derive the most general form of acceleration equation in the presence of torsion and non-metricity. That is we derive the cosmic acceleration equation when the nonRiemannian degrees of freedom are also taken into account. We then discuss some conditions under which torsion and non-metricity accelerate/decelerate the expansion rate of the Universe.
We investigate late time acceleration of the universe in higher dimensional cosmology. The content in the universe is assumed to exert pressure which is different in the normal and extra dimensions. Cosmologically viable solutions are found to exist for simple forms of the equation of state. The parameters of the model are fixed by comparing the predictions with supernovae data. While observations stipulate that the matter exerts almost vanishing pressure in the normal dimensions, we assume that, in the extra dimensions, the equation of state is of the form $P \propto \, ρ^{1 - γ}$. For approp…
We analyze the evolution of a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime within the framework of $f(R)$ metric gravity using an exponential model. We show that $f(R)$ gravity may lead to a vanishing effective cosmological constant in the far future (i.e. $R\rightarrow 0$) and yet produce a transient accelerated expansion at present time with a potentially viable cosmological history. This is in contrast with several $f(R)$ models which, while viable, produce in general a non-vanishing effective cosmological constant asymptotically in time ($R\rightarrow 4Λ_{\rm eff}$). We also show that relativistic…
Recent observations of near supernova show that the acceleration expansion of Universe decreases. This phenomenon is called the transient acceleration. In the second part of work we consider the 3-component Universe composed of a scalar field, interacting with the dark matter on the agegraphic dark energy background. We show that the transient acceleration appears in frame of such a model. The obtained results agree with the latest cosmological observations, namely, the 557 SNIa sample (Union2) was released by the Supernova Cosmology Project (SCP) Collaboration.
We propose a modified theory of gravitation constructed by the addition of the term $f(T_{μν}T^{μν})$ to the Einstein-Hilbert action, and elaborate a particular case $f(T_{μν}T^{μν})=α(T_{μν}T^{μν})^η$, where $α$ and $η$ are real constants, dubbed as energy-momentum powered gravity (EMPG). We search for viable cosmologies arising from EMPG especially in the context of the late-time accelerated expansion of the Universe. We investigate the ranges of the EMPG parameters $(α,η)$ on theoretical as well as observational grounds leading to the late-time acceleration of the Universe with pressureless…
We present a cosmological model arising from a gravitational theory with an infinite tower of higher-order curvature invariants that can reproduce the entire evolution of the Universe: from inflation to late-time acceleration, without invoking an inflaton nor a cosmological constant. The theory is Einsteinian-like. The field equations for a Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker metric are of second-order and can reproduce a late-time evolution that is consistent with the acceleration provided by the cosmological constant at low redshift. Our results force us to reinterpret the nature of dark ene…
A refined version of a recently introduced method for analysing the dynamics of an inhomogeneous irrotational dust universe is presented. A fully non-perturbative numerical computation of the time dependence of volume in this framework leads to the following results. If the initial state of the universe is Einstein-de Sitter with small Gaussian perturbations, then there is no acceleration even though the inhomogeneities strongly affect the evolution. A universe with a positive background curvature can exhibit acceleration, but not in conjunction with reasonable values for the Hubble rate. Thus…
It is obtained that dark energy emerges from higher-derivative gravity with anon-linear terms proportional to $R^2$ and $R^3$ with $R$ being the Ricci scalar curvature. Interestingly, it is found that the universe begins with acceleration, which continues for a short period. Later on,it decelerates driven by radiation and subsequently by matter. Two components of dark energy are found here.In the early universe, dark energy mimics quintessence giving high vlue of initial density $\sim 10^{75} {\rm GeV}^4$ at Planck scale. But, in the late universe, dark energy behaves like phantom giving curre…
A model of a universe without big bang singularity is presented, which displaysanearly inflationary period ending just before a phase transition to a deflationary epoch. The model produces enough heavy particles so as to reheat the universe at temperatures in the MeV regime. After the reheating, it smoothly matches the standard $Λ$CDM scenario.
In a recent model Choudhury proposed that a collapsing matter generates an adiabatic pressure which can be used to explain the acceleration of the physical universe under certain approximation. In this work we superimpose the core pressure generated through the entropy of the blackhole. We have ignored the blackhole internal energy change during this process. We have then calculated both Hubble parameter and the deacceleration parameter. We have shown that the Hubble parameter is positive and the deacceleration parameter fluctuates with time, meaning for certain period the universe accelerates…
In this paper, we consider the stability of cylindrical wormholes during evolution of universe from inflation to late time acceleration epochs. We show that there are two types of cylindrical wormholes. The first type is produced at the corresponding point where k black F-strings are transited to BIon configuration. This wormhole transfers energy from extra dimensions into our universe, causes inflation, loses it's energy and vanishes. The second type of cylindrical wormhole is created by a tachyonic potential and causes a new phase of acceleration. We show that wormhole parameters grow faster…
We present cosmological solutions for (1+3+n)-dimensional steady state universe in dilaton gravity with an arbitrary dilaton coupling constant w and exponential dilaton self-interaction potentials in the string frame. We focus particularly on the class in which the 3-space expands with a time varying deceleration parameter. We discuss the number of the internal dimensions and the value of the dilaton coupling constant to determine the cases that are consistent with the observed universe and the primordial nucleosynthesis. The 3-space starts with a decelerated expansion rate and evolves into ac…
In the present work, an attempt has been made to explain the recent cosmic acceleration with two mutually interacting scalar fields, one being the Brans-Dicke scalar field and the other a quintessence scalar field. Conditions have been derived for which the quintessence scalar field has an early oscillation and it grows during a later time to govern the dynamics of the universe.
A new model of nonlinear electrodynamics with a dimensional parameter $β$ coupled to gravity is considered. We show that an accelerated expansion of the universe takes place if the nonlinear electromagnetic field is the source of the gravitational field. A pure magnetic universe is investigated and the magnetic field drives the universe to accelerate. In this model, after the big bang, the universe undergoes inflation, and the accelerated expansion and then decelerates approaching Minkowski spacetime asymptotically. We demonstrate the causality of the model and a classical stability at the dec…
The $f(R)$ theories of gravity are the most popular, simple and well succeeded extension of Einstein's General Relativity. They can account for some observational issues of standard cosmology with no need for evoking the dark sector of the universe. In the present letter we will investigate LRS Bianchi type-I space-time in $f(R)$ gravity theory within the phantom energy dominated era. We show that in this formalism the phantom energy dominated universe is a transient stage and in the further stage of the universe dynamics, it is dominated, once again, by dark energy. Such an important feature …
We construct a FLRW universe considering an anisotropic scaling between space and time at extremely high and low energies only. In this context, Friedmann equations contain an additional term arising from spatial curvature which implements nonsingular bounces in the early Universe. The matter content of the model is a nonrelativistic pressureless perfect fluid and radiation. By breaking covariance diffeomorphism also at extreme large scales, an additional term furnishes late-time acceleration due to spatial curvature so that a cosmological constant is not needed. In order to probe the final fa…
Holographic model is originated from Holographic principle. The equation of state in Holographic model and Einstein's gravity with particle horizon can be obtained as wD>-1/3 and cannot justify the expansion acceleration of the Universe. But, by using the event horizon, this model can result in the accelerating expansion in Einstein's gravity and Brans-Dicke cosmology. In this context, we study the holographic model with apparent horizon satisfying the acceleration expansion. We shall see, in the presence of interaction, phase change and transition from decelerated state to accelerated state i…
The present thesis is a collection of papers which deals with analytic models that can drive the present accelerated expansion of the universe, starting from a decelerated expansion in the early matter dominated regime. Both minimally and non minimally coupled scalar fields are employed for the purpose. Interaction between nonminimally coupled scalar field, such as the Brans-Dicke field, with dark matter and dark energy are considered. This interactions are shown to solve some fine tuning problems. Curvature driven acceleration is also considered in this thesis, which shows that a smooth trans…
A new model of nonlinear electromagnetic fields possessing a dimensional parameter $β$ is proposed. Electromagnetic fields are considered as the source of the gravitation field and accelerated expansion of the universe is driven by nonlinear electromagnetic fields. We consider the magnetic universe and the stochastic magnetic field is a source of the universe acceleration. After the universe inflation and the accelerated expansion the universe decelerates. We show the causality of the model and a classical stability at the deceleration phase. The spectral index, the tensor-to-scalar ratio, and…
In this letter, we have considered a model of the universe filled with modified Chaplygin gas and another fluid (with barotropic equation of state) and its role in accelerating phase of the universe. We have assumed that the mixture of these two fluid models is valid from (i) the radiation era to $Λ$CDM for $-1\leγ\le 1$ and (ii) the radiation era to quiessence model for $γ<-1$. For these two fluid models, the statefinder parameters describe different phase of the evolution of the universe.
In this work we investigate the utility of using SNe Ia observations in constraining the cosmological parameters in BSBM theory where a scalar field is responsible for both fine structure constant variation and late time universe acceleration. The model is discussed in the presence of an exponential self potential for the scalar field. Stability and phase space analysis of the solutions are studied. The model is tested against observational data for Hubble parameter and quasar absorption spectra. With the best fitted model parameters, the theory predicts a good match with the experimental resu…
The possible gamma ray burst occurred in location and temporal consistence with gravitational wave event GW150914, as reported by Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM), offers a new way of constraining models with extra dimensions. Using the time delay in arrival of the gamma ray transient observed by Fermi GBM relative to the gravitational waves event triggered by the LIGO detectors we investigate the size of the spherical brane-universe expanding in multi-dimensional space-time. It is shown that a joint observation of gravitational waves in association with gamma ray burst can provide a very s…
The model where the universe is considered as an expanding spherical 3-brane allows us to explain its expansion rate without a dark energy component. In this scenario the computed redshift that corresponds to the transition from cosmic deceleration to acceleration is in a good agreement with observations.
We show that positive averaged acceleration obtained in LTB models through spatial averaging can require integration over a region beyond the event horizon of the central observer. We provide an example of a LTB model with positive averaged acceleration in which the luminosity distance does not contain information about the entire spatially averaged region, making the averaged acceleration unobservable. Since the cosmic acceleration is obtained from fitting the observed luminosity distance to a FRW model we conclude that in general a positive averaged acceleration in LTB models does not imply …
By incorporating the holographic principle in a time-depending Lambda-term cosmology, new physical bounds on the arbitrary parameters of the model can be obtained. Considering then the dark energy as a purely geometric entity, for which no equation of state has to be introduced, it is shown that the resulting range of allowed values for the parameters may explain both the coincidence problem and the universe accelerated expansion, without resorting to any kind of additional structures.
This paper is devoted to study the accelerated expansion of the universe by exploring the Brans-Dicke parameter in different eras. For this purpose, we take FRW universe model with viscous fluid (without potential) and Bianchi type I universe model with barotropic fluid (with and without potential). We evaluate deceleration parameter as well as Brans-Dicke parameter to explore cosmic acceleration. It is concluded that accelerated expansion of the universe can also be achieved for higher values of the Brans-Dicke parameter in some cases.
We investigate the effect of the bulk content in the general Gauss-Bonnet braneworld on the evolution of the universe. We find that the Gauss-Bonnet term and the combination of the dark radiation and the matter content of the bulk play a crucial role in the universe evolution. We show that our model can describe the super-acceleration of our universe with the equation of state of the effective dark energy in agreement with observations.
Here, RS-II model of brane-gravity is considerd for phantom universe using non-linear equation of stste. Phantom fluid is known to violate the weak energy condition. In this paper, it is found that this characteristic of phantom energy is affected drastically by the negative brane-tension $λ$ of the RS-II model. It is interesting to see that upto a certain value of energy density $ρ$ satisfying $ρ/λ< 1$, weak energy condition is violated and universe super-accelerates. But as $ρ$ increases more, only strong energy condition is violated and universe accelerates. When $1 < ρ/λ<2$, even strong en…
A model of nonlinear electromagnetic fields with a dimensional parameter $β$ is proposed. From PVLAS experiment the bound on the parameter $β$ was obtained. Electromagnetic fields are coupled with the gravitation field and we show that the universe accelerates due to nonlinear electromagnetic fields. The magnetic universe is considered and the stochastic magnetic field is a background. After inflation the universe decelerates and approaches to the radiation era. The range of the scale factor, when the causality of the model and a classical stability take place, was obtained. The spectral index…
The possibility that the present acceleration of the universe is driven by a kind of viscous fluid is exploited. At background level this model is similar to the generalized Chaplygin gas model (GCGM). But, at perturbative level, the viscous fluid exhibits interesting properties. In particular the oscillations in the power spectrum that plagues the GCGM are not present. Possible fundamental descriptions for this viscous dark energy are discussed.
