We present initial results from the \textit{COS and Gemini Mapping the Circumgalactic Medium} (\mbox{CGMCGM} $\equiv$ CGM$^{2}$) survey. The CGM$^{2}$ survey consists of 1689 galaxies, all with high-quality Gemini GMOS spectra, within 1 Mpc of twenty-two $z \lesssim 1$ quasars, all with S/N$\sim$10 {\emph{HST/COS}} G130M$+$G160M spectra. For 572 of these galaxies having stellar masses $10^{7} M_{\odot} < M_{\star} < 10^{11} M_{\odot}$ and $z \lesssim 0.5$, we show that the \ion{H}{1} covering fraction above a threshold of \NHI$>10^{14} $cm$^{-2}$ is $\gtrsim 0.5$ within 1.5 virial radii ($R_{\rm vir} \sim R_{200m}$). We examine the \ion{H}{1} kinematics and find that the majority of absorption lies within $\pm$ 250 km s$^{-1}$ of the galaxy systemic velocity. We examine \ion{H}{1} covering fractions over a range of impact parameters to infer a characteristic size of the CGM, $R^{14}_{\rm CGM}$, as a function of galaxy mass. $R^{14}_{\rm CGM}$ is the impact parameter at which the probability of observing an absorber with \NHI $>$ 10$^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$ is $>$ 50\%. In this framework, the radial extent of the CGM of $M_{\star} > 10^{9.9} M_{\odot}$ galaxies is $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} = 346^{+57}_{-53}$ kpc or $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} \simeq 1.2R_{\rm vir}$. Intermediate-mass galaxies with $10^{9.2} < M_{\star}/M_{\odot} < 10^{9.9}$ have an extent of $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} = 353^{+64}_{-50}$ kpc or $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} \simeq 2.4R_{\rm vir}$. Low-mass galaxies, $M_{\star} < 10^{9.2} M_{\odot}$, show a smaller physical scale $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} = 177_{-65}^{+70}$ kpc and extend to $R^{14}_{\rm CGM} \simeq 1.6R_{\rm vir}$. Our analysis suggests that using $R_{\rm vir}$ as a proxy for the characteristic radius of the CGM likely underestimates its extent.
Both observations and recent numerical simulations of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) support the hypothesis that a self-regulating feedback loop suspends the gas density of the ambient CGM close to the galaxy in a state with a ratio of cooling time to freefall time >10. This limiting ratio is thought to arise because circumgalactic gas becomes increasingly susceptible to multiphase condensation as the ratio declines. If the timescale ratio gets too small, then cold clouds precipitate out of the CGM, rain into the galaxy, and fuel energetic feedback that raises the ambient cooling time. The as…
Galaxies are surrounded by extended atmospheres, which are often called the circumgalactic medium (CGM) and are the least understood part of galactic ecosystems. The CGM serves as a reservoir of both diffuse, metal-poor gas accreted from the intergalactic medium, and metal-rich gas that is either ejected from galaxies by energetic feedback or stripped from infalling satellites. As such, the CGM is empirically multi-phased and complex in dynamics. Significant progress has been made in the past decade or so in observing the cosmic-ray/B-field, as well as various phases of the CGM. But basic ques…
We analyze the equivalent widths of HI Ly-$α$ ($W_{Lyα}$) absorption from the inner (R < 160 kpc) circumgalactic medium (CGM) of 85 galaxies at $z \sim 0$ with stellar masses $M*$ ranging $\rm{8 \leq log M* / M_{\odot} \leq 11.6}$. Across three orders of magnitude in stellar mass, the CGM of present-day galaxies exhibits a very high covering fraction of cool hydrogen gas ($f_C = 87\pm 4$\%) indicating that the CGM is ubiquitous in modern, isolated galaxies. When HI Ly-$α$ is detected, its equivalent width declines with increasing radius regardless of the galaxy mass, but the scatter in this tr…
Massive galaxies at high-z are known to co-evolve with their circumgalactic medium (CGM). If we want to truly understand the role of the CGM in the early evolution of galaxies and galaxy-clusters, we need to fully explore the multi-phase nature of the CGM. We present two novel science cases that utilize low-surface-brightness observations in the radio regime to better understand the CGM around distant galaxies. At the lowest temperatures, observations of widespread molecular gas are providing evidence for the cold baryon cycle that grows massive galaxies. At the highest temperatures, observati…
We consider a model of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) in which feedback maintains a constant ratio of cooling time to freefall time throughout the halo, so that the entire CGM is marginally unstable to multiphase condensation. This 'precipitation model' is motivated by observations of multiphase gas in the cores of galaxy clusters and the halos of massive ellipticals. We derive from the model density and temperature profiles for the CGM around galaxies with masses similar to the Milky Way. After taking into consideration the geometrical position of our solar system in the Milky Way, we show t…
Recent studies have revealed a dynamic interplay between the galaxy ecosystem and the circumgalactic medium (CGM). We investigate the CGM at high redshifts (z $\gtrsim$ 2) by using bright afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRB) as background sources. We compiled a sample of medium-resolution ($δ$v $<$ 50 km/s) and high signal-to-noise (typical SNR $\sim$ 10) spectra from 27 GRB afterglows covering z $\sim$ 2 - 6, with six of them at z $\gtrsim$ 4. We analyzed the high- and low-ionization absorption features within $\pm$400 km/s to extract the CGM and ISM kinematics. In the stacked spectra, high-i…
The circumgalactic medium (CGM) is closely linked to galaxy formation and evolution, but difficult to characterize observationally and typically poorly resolved in cosmological simulations. We use spherically-symmetric, idealized, high-resolution simulations of the CGM in $10^{12}M_\odot$ and $10^{11}M_\odot$ dark matter halos to characterize the gas pressure, turbulent and radial velocities, and degree of thermal and effective dynamic pressure support in the overall CGM as well as in its high- and low-temperature phases. We find that the $10^{12}M_\odot$ halo contains a CGM mostly formed of a…
We present observations of 50 pairs of redshift z ~ 0.2 star-forming galaxies and background quasars. These sightlines probe the circumgalactic medium (CGM) out to half the virial radius, and we describe the circumgalactic gas kinematics relative to the reference frame defined by the galactic disks. We detect halo gas in MgII absorption, measure the equivalent-width-weighted Doppler shifts relative to each galaxy, and find that the CGM has a component of angular momentum that is aligned with the galactic disk. No net counter-rotation of the CGM is detected within 45 degrees of the major axis a…
The circumgalactic medium (CGM), which harbors > 50% of all the baryons in a galaxy, is both the reservoir of gas for subsequent star formation and the depository of chemically processed gas, energy, and angular momentum from feedback. As such, the CGM obviously plays a critical role in galaxy evolution. We discuss the opportunity to image this component using recombination line emission, beginning with the early results coming from recent statistical detection of this emission to the final goal of realizing spectral-line images of the CGM in individual nearby galaxies. Such work will happen i…
We present an analysis of the physical and dynamical states of two sets of EAGLE zoom simulations of galaxy haloes, one at high redshift ($z=2-3$) and the other at low redshift ($z=0$), with masses of $\approx 10^{12} M_{\odot}$. Our focus is how the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of these $L^*$ star-forming galaxies change over the last 10 Gyr. We find that the high-$z$ CGM is almost equally divided between the "cool" ($T<10^5$ K) and "hot" ($T\geq 10^5$ K) phases, while the low-$z$ hot CGM phase contains $5\times$ more mass. The high-$z$ hot CGM contains 60% more metals than the cool CGM, while…
In this article we discuss the importance of high-resolution absorption spectroscopy for our understanding of the distribution and physical nature of the gaseous circumgalactic medium (CGM) that surrounds the Milky Way. Observational and theoretical studies indicate a high complexity of the gas kinematics and an extreme multi-phase nature of the CGM in low-redshift galaxies. High-precision absorption-line measurements of the Milky Way's gas environment thus are essential to explore fundamental parameters of circumgalactic gas in the local Universe, such as mass, chemical composition, and spati…
We present an analysis of the angular momentum content of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) using TNG100, one of the flagship runs of the IllustrisTNG project. We focus on Milky Way-mass halos ($\sim 10^{12} \; M_{\odot}$) at $z=0$ but also analyze other masses and redshifts up to $z=5$. We find that the CGM angular momentum properties are strongly correlated with the stellar angular momentum of the corresponding galaxy: the CGM surrounding high-angular momentum galaxies has a systematically higher angular momentum and is better aligned to the rotational axis of the galaxy itself than the CGM su…
Surrounding the Milky Way (MW) is the circumgalactic medium (CGM), an extended reservoir of hot gas that has significant implications for the evolution of the MW. We used the HaloSat all-sky survey to study the CGM's soft X-ray emission in order to better define its distribution and structure. We extend a previous HaloSat study of the southern CGM (Galactic latitude b < -30 deg) to include the northern CGM (b > 30 deg) and find evidence that at least two hot gas model components at different temperatures are required to produce the observed emission. The cooler component has a typical temperat…
The circumgalactic medium (CGM) is one of the frontiers of galaxy formation and intimately connected to the galaxy via accretion of gas on to the galaxy and gaseous outflows from the galaxy. Here we analyse the magnetic field in the CGM of the Milky Way-like galaxies simulated as part of the \textsc{Auriga} project that constitutes a set of high resolution cosmological magnetohydrodynamical zoom simulations. We show that before $z=1$ the CGM becomes magnetised via galactic outflows that transport magnetised gas from the disk into the halo. At this time the magnetisation of the CGM closely foll…
We explore how environment affects the metallicity of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) using 13 low mass galaxy groups (2-5 galaxies) at $\langle z_{abs}\rangle=0.25$ identified near background quasars. Using quasar spectra from HST/COS and from Keck/HIRES or VLT/UVES we measure column densities of, or determine limits on, CGM absorption lines. We use a Markov chain Monte Carlo approach with Cloudy to estimate metallicities of cool ($T\sim10^4$K) CGM gas within groups and compare them to CGM metallicities of 47 isolated galaxies. Both group and isolated CGM metallicities span a wide range ($-2<…
We analyze the different fates of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) in FIRE-2 cosmological simulations, focusing on the redshifts z=0.25 and z=2 representative of recent surveys. Our analysis includes 21 zoom-in simulations covering the halo mass range Mh(z=0) ~ 10^10 - 10^12 Msun. We analyze both where the gas ends up after first leaving the CGM (its "proximate" fate), as well as its location at z=0 (its "ultimate" fate). Of the CGM at z=2, about half is found in the ISM or stars of the central galaxy by z=0 in Mh(z=2) ~ 5e11 Msun halos, but most of the CGM in lower-mass halos ends up in the IG…
We examine the connection between the properties of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) and the quenching and morphological evolution of central galaxies in the EAGLE and IllustrisTNG simulations. The simulations yield very different median CGM mass fractions, $f_{\rm CGM}$, as a function of halo mass, $M_{200}$, with low-mass haloes being significantly more gas-rich in IllustrisTNG than in EAGLE. Nonetheless, in both cases scatter in $f_{\rm CGM}$ at fixed $M_{200}$ is strongly correlated with the specific star formation rate and the kinematic morphology of central galaxies. The correlations are …
We examine the effects of SMBH feedback on the CGM using a cosmological hydrodynamic simulation \citep[{\sc Romulus25};][]{Tremmel2017} and a set of four zoom-in `genetically modified' Milky Way-mass galaxies sampling different evolutionary paths. By tracing the distribution of metals in the circumgalactic medium (CGM), we show that \ion{O}{6} is a sensitive indicator of supermassive black hole (SMBH) feedback. First, we calculate the column densities of \ion{O}{6} in simulated Milky Way-mass galaxies and compare them with observations from the COS-Halos Survey. Our simulations show column den…
Over the past decade, Lyman-alpha and metal line absorption observations have established the ubiquity of a gas-rich circumgalactic medium (CGM) around star-forming galaxies at z~0.2 potentially tracing half of the missing baryonic mass within galaxy halos. Unfortunately, these observations only provide a statistical measure of the gas in the CGM and do not constrain the spatial distribution and kinematics of the gas. Furthermore, we have limited sensitivity to Lyman-alpha at z~0 with existing instruments. As such, we remain ignorant of how this gas may flow from the CGM onto the disks of gala…
Galaxies are surrounded by massive gas reservoirs (i.e. the circumgalactic medium; CGM) which play a key role in their evolution. The properties of the CGM, which are dependent on a variety of internal and environmental factors, are often inferred from absorption line surveys which rely on a limited number of single lines-of-sight. In this work we present an analysis of 28 galaxy haloes selected from the Auriga project, a cosmological magneto-hydrodynamical zoom-in simulation suite of isolated Milky Way-mass galaxies, to understand the impact of CGM diversity on observational studies. Although…
We study the effect of magnetic fields on a simulated galaxy and its surrounding gaseous halo, or circumgalactic medium (CGM), within cosmological 'zoom-in' simulations of a Milky Way-mass galaxy as part of the 'Simulating the Universe with Refined Galaxy Environments' (SURGE) project. We use three different galaxy formation models, each with and without magnetic fields, and include additional spatial refinement in the CGM to improve its resolution. The central galaxy's star formation rate and stellar mass are not strongly affected by the presence of magnetic fields, but the galaxy is more dis…
Luminous red galaxies (LRGs) are the most massive galaxies at $z\sim 0.5$ and, by selection, have negligible star formation. These objects have halo masses between those of $L_{*}$ galaxies, whose circumgalactic media (CGM) are observed to have large masses of cold gas, and clusters of galaxies, which primarily contain hot gas. Here we report detections of strong and extended metal (CIII 977) and HI lines in the CGM of two LRGs. The CIII lines have equivalent widths of $\sim 1.8$ Å and $\sim 1.2$ Å , and velocity spreads of $\sim 796$ km s$^{-1}$ and $\sim 1245$ km s$^{-1}$, exceeding all such…
We assess the fraction of the Milky Way's circumgalactic medium (CGM) eluding detection due to its velocity being similar to gas in the disk. This is achieved using synthetic observations of the CGM in a simulated MW-mass galaxy that shows similar CGM kinematics to the MW and external L$\sim$L$_*$ galaxies. As viewed by a mock observer at a location similar to the Sun, only 50$\%$ (by mass) of the gas moves at high velocity ($|v_{\rm LSR}|\geq$100 km s$^{-1}$ or $|v_{\rm DEV}|\geq$50 km s$^{-1}$) in the simulated CGM and would be observable. The low velocity gas is thermodynamically similar to…
During the last decade, numerous and varied observations, along with increasingly sophisticated numerical simulations, have awakened astronomers to the central role the circumgalactic medium (CGM) plays in regulating galaxy evolution. It contains the majority of the baryonic matter associated with a galaxy, along with most of the metals, and must continually replenish the star forming gas in galaxies that continue to sustain star formation. And while the CGM is complex, containing gas ranging over orders of magnitude in temperature and density, a simple emergent property may be governing its s…
We use hydrodynamical simulations of two Milky Way-mass galaxies to demonstrate the impact of cosmic-ray pressure on the kinematics of cool and warm circumgalactic gas. Consistent with previous studies, we find that cosmic-ray pressure can dominate over thermal pressure in the inner 50 kpc of the circumgalactic medium (CGM), creating an overall cooler CGM than that of similar galaxy simulations run without cosmic rays. We generate synthetic sightlines of the simulated galaxies' CGM and use Voigt profile fitting methods to extract ion column densities, Doppler-b parameters, and velocity centroi…
We examine the properties of the low-redshift circumgalactic medium (CGM) around star-forming and quenched galaxies in the Simba cosmological hydrodynamic simulations, focusing on comparing HI and metal line absorption to observations from the COS-Halos and COS-Dwarfs surveys. Halo baryon fractions are generally $\lesssim 50\%$ of the cosmic fraction due to stellar feedback at low masses, and jet-mode AGN feedback at high masses. Baryons and metals in the CGM of quenched galaxies are $\gtrsim 90\%$ hot gas, while the CGM of star-forming galaxies is more multi-phase. Hot CGM gas has low metalli…
We explore the impact of cosmic rays (CRs) on cosmological adaptive-mesh refinement simulations of a forming 10^12 Msolar halo, focusing on the circumgalactic medium (CGM), and its resulting low-redshift structure and composition. In contrast to a run with star formation and energetic feedback but no CRs, the CR-inclusive runs feature a CGM substantially enriched with CRs and with metals to roughly 0.1 Zsolar, thanks to robust, persistent outflows from the disk. The CR-inclusive CGMs also feature more diffuse gas at lower temperatures, down to 10^4 K, than the non-CR run, with diffuse material…
We present an analysis of the flow of metals through the circumgalactic medium (CGM) in the Feedback in Realistic Environments (FIRE) simulations of galaxy formation, ranging from isolated dwarfs to $L*$ galaxies. We find that nearly all metals produced in high-redshift galaxies are carried out in winds that reach $0.25 R_{\rm vir}$. When measured at $0.25 R_{\rm vir}$ the metallicity of outflows is slightly higher than the interstellar medium (ISM) metallicity. Many metals thus reside in the CGM. Cooling and recycling from this reservoir determine the metal budget in the ISM. The outflowing m…
The gas surrounding galaxies outside their disks or interstellar medium and inside their virial radii is known as the circumgalactic medium (CGM). In recent years this component of galaxies has assumed an important role in our understanding of galaxy evolution owing to rapid advances in observational access to this diffuse, nearly invisible material. Observations and simulations of this component of galaxies suggest that it is a multiphase medium characterized by rich dynamics and complex ionization states. The CGM is a source for a galaxy's star-forming fuel, the venue for galactic feedback a…
We analyze new far-ultraviolet spectra of 13 quasars from the z~0.2 COS-Halos survey that cover the HI Lyman limit of 14 circumgalactic medium (CGM) systems. These data yield precise estimates or more constraining limits than previous COS-Halos measurements on the HI column densities NHI. We then apply a Monte-Carlo Markov Chain approach on 32 systems from COS-Halos to estimate the metallicity of the cool (T~10^4K) CGM gas that gives rise to low-ionization state metal lines, under the assumption of photoionization equilibrium with the extragalactic UV background. The principle results are: (1)…
The circumgalactic medium (CGM) of the Milky Way is mostly obscured by nearby gas in position-velocity space because we reside inside the Galaxy. Substantial biases exist in most studies on the Milky Way's CGM that focus on easier-to-detect high-velocity gas. With mock observations on a Milky-Way analog from the FOGGIE simulation, we investigate four observational biases related to the Milky Way's CGM. First, QSO absorption-line studies probe a limited amount of the CGM mass: only 35% of the mass is at high Galactic latitudes $|b|>20$ degrees, of which only half is moving at $|v_{\rm LSR}|\gtr…
Observing the circumgalactic medium (CGM) in emission provides 3D maps of the spatial and kinematic extent of the gas that fuels galaxies and receives their feedback. We present mock emission-line maps of highly resolved CGM gas from the FOGGIE project (Figuring Out Gas & Galaxies in Enzo) and link these maps back to physical and spatial properties of the gas. By increasing the spatial resolution alone, the total luminosity of the line emission increases by an order of magnitude. This increase arises in the abundance of dense small-scale structure resolved when the CGM gas is simulated to < 10…
Ubiquitous detections of cold/warm gas around galaxies indicate that the circumgalactic medium (CGM) is multiphase and dynamic. Recent state-of-the-art cosmological galaxy simulations have generally underproduced the column density of cold halo gas. We argue that this may be due to a mismatch of spatial resolution in the circumgalactic space and the relevant physical scales at which the cold gas operates. Using semi-analytic calculations and a set of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations, we present a multiphase model of the gaseous halos around galaxies, the circumgalactic mist (CGm). The CGm…
The cycling of baryons in and out of galaxies is what ultimately drives galaxy formation and evolution. The circumgalactic medium (CGM) represents the interface between the interstellar medium and the cosmic web, hence its properties are directly shaped by the baryon cycle. Although traditionally the CGM is thought to consist of warm and hot gas, recent breakthroughs are presenting a new scenario according to which an important fraction of its mass may reside in the cold atomic and molecular phase. This would represent fuel that is readily available for star formation, with crucial implication…
Galactic outflows are critical to our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. However the details of the underlying feedback process remain unclear. We compare Ly$α$ observations of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) with mock observations of their simulated CGM. We use cosmological hydrodynamical `zoom-in' simulations of an LBG which contains strong, momentum-driven galactic outflows. Simulation snapshots at $z=2.2$ and $z=2.65$ are used, corresponding to the available observational data. The simulation is post-processed with the radiative transfer code \t…
We examine the properties of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) at low redshift in a range of simulated Milky Way mass halos. The sample is comprised of seven idealized simulations, an adaptive mesh refinement cosmological zoom-in simulation, and two groups of 50 halos with star forming or quiescent galaxies taken from the IllustrisTNG100 simulation. The simulations have very different setups, resolution, and feedback models, but are analyzed in a uniform manner. By comparing median radial profiles and mass distributions of CGM properties, we isolate key similarities and differences. In doing so,…
Determining the clumpiness of matter around galaxies is pivotal to a full understanding of the spatially inhomogeneous, multi-phase gas in the circumgalactic medium (CGM). We combine high spatially resolved 3D observations with hydrodynamical cosmological simulations to measure the cold circumgalactic gas clumpiness. We present new adaptive-optics-assisted VLT/MUSE observations of a quadruply lensed quasar, targeting the CGM of 2 foreground $z\sim$1 galaxies observed in absorption. We additionally use zoom-in FOGGIE simulations with exquisite resolution ($\sim$0.1 kpc scales) in the CGM of gal…
The circumgalactic medium (CGM), i.e. the gaseous haloes around galaxies, is both the reservoir of gas that fuels galaxy growth and the repository of gas expelled by galactic winds. Most cosmological, hydrodynamical simulations focus their computational effort on the galaxies themselves and treat the CGM more coarsely, which means small-scale structure cannot be resolved. We get around this issue by running zoom-in simulations of a Milky Way-mass galaxy with standard mass refinement and additional uniform spatial refinement within the virial radius. This results in a detailed view of its gaseo…
We combine the Santa-Cruz Semi-Analytic Model (SAM) for galaxy formation and evolution with the circumgalactic medium (CGM) model presented in Faerman et al. (2020) to explore the CGM properties of $L^{*}$ galaxies. We use the SAM to generate a sample of galaxies with halo masses similar to the Milky Way (MW) halo, $M_{\rm vir} \approx 10^{12}~{\rm M_{sun}}$, and find that the CGM mass and mean metallicity in the sample are correlated. We use the CGM masses and metallicities of the SAM galaxies as inputs for the FSM20 model, and vary the amount of non-thermal support. The density profiles in o…

We investigate the relative importance of two galactic outflow suppression mechanisms : a) Cosmological infall of the intergalactic gas onto the galaxy, and b) the existence of a hot circumgalactic medium (CGM). Considering only radial motion, the infall reduces the speed of outflowing gas and even halts the outflow, depending on the mass and redshift of the galaxy. For star forming galaxies there exists an upper mass limit beyond which outflows are suppressed by the gravitational field of the galaxy. We find that infall can reduce this upper mass limit approximately by a factor of two (indepe…
We study the distribution and kinematics of the cool circumgalactic medium (CGM) of emission line galaxies (ELGs) traced by metal absorption lines. Using about 200,000 ELGs from SDSS-IV eBOSS and half a million background quasars from SDSS, we measure the median absorption strength of MgII and FeII lines in quasar spectra for impact parameters ranging from 10 kpc to 1 Mpc. For comparison we measure the same quantity around luminous red galaxies (LRGs). On scales greater than 100 kpc both ELGs and LRGs exhibit similar absorption profiles. However, metal absorption is 5-10 times stronger around …
Absorption-line measurements of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) display a highly non-uniform distribution of lower ionization state species accompanied by more widespread higher ionization state material. This suggests that the CGM is a dynamic, multiphase medium, such as arises in the presence of turbulence. To better understand this evolution, we perform hydrodynamic and magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the CGM surrounding Milky Way-like galaxies. In both cases, the CGM is initially in hydrostatic balance in a $10^{12}$ solar masses dark matter gravitational potential, and the simul…
The circumgalactic medium (CGM) of galaxies serves as a record of the influences of outflows and accretion that drive the evolution of galaxies. Feedback from star formation drives outflows that carry mass and metals away from galaxies to the CGM, while infall from the intergalactic medium (IGM) is thought to bring in fresh gas to fuel star formation. Such exchanges of matter between IGM-CGM-galaxies have proven critical to producing galaxy scaling relations in cosmological simulations that match observations. However, the nature of these processes, of the physics that drives outflows and accr…
We study the properties of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of high-$z$ galaxies in the metal enrichment simulations presented in Pallottini et al. 2014. At $z=4$, we find that the simulated CGM gas density profiles are self-similar, once scaled with the virial radius of the parent dark matter halo. We also find a simple analytical expression relating the neutral hydrogen equivalent width (${\rm EW}_{\rm HI}$) of CGM absorbers as a function of the line of sight impact parameter ($b$). We test our predictions against mock spectra extracted from the simulations, and show that the model reproduces…
We demonstrate the presence of an extended and massive circumgalactic medium (CGM) around Messier 31 using archival HST COS ultraviolet spectroscopy of 18 QSOs projected within two virial radii of M31 (Rvir=300 kpc). We detect absorption from SiIII at -300<vLSR}<-150 km/s toward all 3 sightlines at R<0.2Rvir, 3 of 4 sightlines at 0.8<R/Rvir<1.1, and possibly 1 of 11 at 1.1<R/Rvir<1.8. We present several arguments that the gas at these velocities observed in these directions originates from the CGM of M31 rather than the Local Group or Milky Way CGM or Magellanic Stream. We show that the dwarf …
We investigate the geometric distribution of gas metallicities in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) around $47$, $z<0.7$ galaxies from the "Multiphase Galaxy Halos" Survey. Using a combination of quasar spectra from HST/COS and from Keck/HIRES or VLT/UVES we measure column densities of, or determine limits on, CGM absorption lines. We then use a Monte-Carlo Markov chain approach with Cloudy to estimate the metallicity of cool (T$\sim$$10^4$K) CGM gas. We also use HST images to determine host galaxy inclination and quasar--galaxy azimuthal angles. Our sample spans a HI column density range of $13…
Metallicity estimates of circumgalactic gas based on absorption line measurements typically require photoionization modeling to account for unseen ionization states. We explore the impact of uncertainties in the extreme ultraviolet background (EUVB) radiation on such metallicity determinations for the z < 1 circumgalactic medium (CGM). In particular, we study how uncertainties in the power-law slope of the EUV radiation, $\mathrm{α_{EUVB}}$, from active galactic nuclei affect metallicity estimates in a sample of 34 absorbers with HI column densities between 15.25 < log ($\mathrm{N_{HI}}$ / $\m…
