Ferromagnetic Ni2MnGa-based alloys play an important role in technological fields, such as smart actuators, magnetic refrigeration and robotics. The possibility of obtaining large non-contact deformation induced by an external perturbation is one of its key strengths for applications. However, the search for materials with low cost, practical fabrication procedures and large signal output under small perturbing fields still poses challenges. In the present study we demonstrate that by judicial choice of substitution on the Mn site, an abrupt magnetostructural transition from a paramagnetic austenite phase to a ferromagnetic martensite one can be tuned to close to room temperature achieving large and reproducible strains. The required magnetic field to induce the strain varies from small values, as low as 0.25 T for 297.4 K and 1.6% of strain, to 8 T for 305 K and 2.6% of strain. Our findings point to encouraging possibilities for application of shape memory alloys in relatively inexpensive, scalable polycrystalline materials.
Bulk polycrystalline piezoelectric ceramics are extensively used in wide ranging applications as actuators, transducers, and sensors. For actuator applications, it is desirable that the piezoelectric ceramic gives as large electric field driven unipolar strain as possible. In recent years there is an increasing interest in the design and development of such piezoceramic materials. Here we show that piezoceramic discs (10 mm diameter) of PZT, BaTiO3-based and Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3-based polycrystalline piezoceramics can show very large unipolar strain 2 to 3 % when the thickness of the discs is reduce…
As a candidate material for applications such as magnetic memory, polycrystalline antiferromagnets offer the same robustness to external magnetic fields, THz spin dynamics, and lack of stray field as their single crystalline counterparts, but without the limitation of epitaxial growth and lattice matched substrates. Here, we first report the detection of the average Neel vector orientiation in polycrystalline NiO via spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR). Secondly, by applying strain through a piezo-electric substrate, we reduce the critical magnetic field required to reach a saturation of the SMR…
The influence of grain size on the flow stress of various FCC polycrystals (Cu, Al, Ag and Ni) has been analyzed by means of computational homogenization of a representative volume element of the microstructure using a FFT approach in combination with a strain gradient crystal plasticity model. The density of geometrically necessary dislocations resulting from the incompatibility of plastic deformation among different crystals was obtained from the Nye tensor, which was efficiently obtained from the curl operation in the Fourier space. The simulation results were in good agreement with the exp…
Scale-free phase-field approach (PFA) at large strains and corresponding finite element method (FEM) simulations for multivariant martensitic phase transformation (PT) from cubic Si I to tetragonal Si II in a polycrystalline aggregate are presented. Important features of the model are large and very anisotropic transformation strain tensor $\varepsilon_{t}=\{0.1753;0.1753; -0.447\}$ and stress-tensor dependent athermal dissipative threshold for PT, which produce essential challenges for computations. 3D polycrystals with 55 and 910 stochastically oriented grains are subjected to uniaxial strai…
To achieve thermoelectric energy conversion, a large transverse thermoelectric effect in topological materials is crucial. However, the general relationship between topological electronic structures and transverse thermoelectric effect remains unclear, restricting the rational design of novel transverse thermoelectric materials. Herein, we demonstrate a topological transition-induced giant transverse thermoelectric effect in polycrystalline Mn-doped Mg3+δBi2 material, which has a competitively large transverse thermopower (617 uV/K), power factor (20393 uWm-1K-2), magnetoresistance (16600%), a…
A physically-informed continuum crystal plasticity model is presented to elucidate the deformation mechanisms and dislocation evolution in body-centered-cubic (bcc) tantalum widely used as a key structural material for mechanical and thermal extremes. We show our unified structural modeling framework informed by mesoscopic dislocation dynamics simulations is capable of capturing salient features of the large inelastic behavior of tantalum at quasi-static (10$^{-3}$ s$^{-1}$) to extreme strain rates (5000 s$^{-1}$) and at room temperature and higher (873K) at both single- and polycrystal levels…
Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) has been widely aware of working as actuators for active/smart morphing structures in the engineering industry. Because of the high actuation energy density of SMAs, compared to other active materials, structures integrated with SMA-based actuators has high advantage in terms of trade-offs between overall structure weight, integrity and functionality. The majority of available constitutive models for SMAs are developed within the infinitesimal strain regime. However, it was reported that particular SMAs can generate transformation strains nearly up to 8%-10%, for whi…
We report on wide-field optically detected magnetic resonance imaging of nitrogen-vacancy centers (NVs) in type IIa polycrystalline diamond. These studies reveal a heterogeneous crystalline environment that produces a varied density of NV centers, including preferential orientation within some individual crystal grains, but preserves long spin coherence times. Using the native NVs as nanoscale sensors, we introduce a 3-dimensional strain imaging technique with high sensitivity ( $< 10^{-5}$ Hz$^{-1/2}$) and diffraction-limited resolution across a wide field of view.
Randomly textured polycrystalline materials of constituents with highly anisotropic nature of grains can be considered globally isotropic. In order to determine the isotropic properties, like elasticity or conductivity, we propose a theory for averaging the coefficients of the corresponding tensors unifying Voigt's, Reuss' or other self-consistent homogenization theories. We apply the method to determine elastic moduli of untextured polycrystals with arbitrary crystal structures, recovering experimental data with high precision for cubic materials. We show that the average moduli can be used t…
A non-local model for the description of twinning in polycrystalline materials in the context of infinitesimal strains: application to a magnesium alloy
We describe a theoretical and computational framework for adiabatic shear banding (ASB) and dynamic recrystallization (DRX) in polycrystalline materials. The Langer-Bouchbinder-Lookman (LBL) thermodynamic theory of polycrystalline plasticity, which we recently reformulated to describe DRX via the inclusion of the grain boundary density or the grain size as an internal state variable, provides a convenient and self-consistent way to represent the viscoplastic and thermal behavior of the material, with minimal ad-hoc assumptions regarding the initiation of yielding or onset of shear banding. We …
This work presents a three-dimensional constitutive model for the martensitic transformation in polycrystalline Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) under large deformation. By utilizing the logarithmic strain and rate, the model is able to account for large strains and rotations that SMA-based components may undertake, but also resolves the artificial stress errors caused by the non-integrable objective rates that are widely used in current commercial finite element software. The model is developed through classical thermodynamic laws combined with the standard Coleman-Noll procedure. The scalar marten…
Multilayers of heavy metals and ferromagnets are the basis for the formation of various structures with inhomogeneous chiral magnetic distributions. The most informative method for studying magnetic states in such structures with a high spatial resolution is Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (L-TEM). Here, we report on the observation of chiral Néel domain walls by means of L-TEM in Co/Pt multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We explain the existence of chiral Néel internal structure due to the overcritical, giant interfacial induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Our …
The possibility of tailoring the critical strain of 2D materials will be crucial for the fabrication of flexible devices. In this paper, the fracture in polycrystalline MoS2 films with two different grain orientations is studied at the micro- and nanoscale using electron microscopy. The critical uniaxial strain is determined to be approximately 5% and independent of the sample morphology. However, electron beam irradiation is found to enhance the interaction between the MoS2 and the PDMS substrates, leading to an increased critical strain that can exceed 10%. This enhancement of strain resista…
A micromechanical model at the microscale within a crystal plasticity self-consistent model, is used to analyse loading histories in Type 316H stainless steel, common to structural components in high-temperature power plants. The study compares the SCM predictions on changes in mechanical behaviour and creep properties to analyses via the UK R5 structural assessment code. Plant-relevant cyclic-creep histories in Type 316H stainless steel at 550C are examined with focus on the estimation of accumulated creep strain. This aims to quantify how better understanding of creep deformation under cycli…
Topological semimetals provide new opportunities for exploring new thermoelectric phenomena, because of their exotic and nontrivial electronic structure topology around the Fermi surface. In this study, we report on the discovery of giant transverse and longitudinal magneto-thermoelectric (MTE) effects in Mg3Bi2, which is predicted to be a type-II nodal-line semimetal in the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The maximum transverse power factor is 2182 μWm^{-1}K^{-2} at 13.5 K and 6 Tesla. The longitudinal power factor reaches up to 3043μWm^{-1}K^{-2} at 15 K and 13 Tesla, which is 20 times…
We have revealed the decisive role of grain-boundary-induced strain fields in electron scattering in polycrystalline graphene. To this end, we have formulated the model based on Boltzmann transport theory which properly takes into account the microscopic structure of grain boundaries (GB) as a repeated sequence of heptagon-pentagon pairs. The effect of strain field is described within the deformation potential theory. For comparison, we consider the scattering due to electrostatic potential of charged grain boundary. We show that at naturally low GB charges the deformation potential scattering…
We demonstrate a non-destructive approach to provide structural properties on the grain level for the absorber layer of kesterite solar cells. Kesterite solar cells are notoriously difficult to characterize structurally due to the co-existence of several phases with very similar lattice parameters. Specifically, we present a comprehensive study of 597 grains in the absorber layer of a 1.64% efficient Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) thin-film solar cell, from which 15 grains correspond to the secondary phase ZnS. By means of three dimensional X-ray diffraction (3DXRD), we obtained statistics for the phase, si…
We demonstrate theoretically how, by imposing epitaxial strain in a ferroelectric perovskite, it is possible to achieve a dynamical control of phonon propagation by means of external electric fields, which yields a giant electrophononic response, i.e. the dependence of the lattice thermal conductivity on external electric fields. Specifically, we study the strain-induced manipulation of the lattice structure and analyze its interplay with the electrophononic response. We show that tensile biaxial strain can drive the system to a regime where the electrical polarization can be effortlessly rota…
The viscoplastic behavior of polycrystalline Mg$_2$SiO$_4$ wadsleyite aggregates, a major high pressure phase of the mantle transition zone of the Earth (depth range: 410 -- 520 km), is obtained by properly bridging several scale transition models. At the very fine nanometric scale corresponding to the disloca-tion core structure, the behavior of thermally activated plastic slip is modeled for strain-rates relevant for laboratory experimental conditions, at high pressure and for a wide range of temperatures, based on the Peierls-Nabarro-Galerkin model. Corresponding single slip reference resol…
Quantum materials, particularly Dirac materials with linearly dispersing bands, can be effectively tuned by strain-induced lattice distortions leading to a pseudo-magnetic field that strongly modulates their electronic properties. Here, we grow kagome magnet FeSn films, consisting of alternatingly stacked Sn$_2$ honeycomb (stanene) and Fe$_3$Sn kagome layers, on SrTiO$_3$(111) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. Using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, we show that the Sn honeycomb layer can be periodically deformed by epitaxial strain for film thickness below 10 nm, resulting in di…
The coupling between strain gradients and polarization, known as flexoelectricity, offers a new mechanism to control the functionality of dielectric materials. However, for the effect to be practically attractive, dynamic control of the strain gradient with magnitudes far exceeding those achievable via mechanical deformation (~10 $m^{-1}$) is needed. Strain-engineered thin films exhibit extraordinary strain gradients of $10^5-10^6 m{-1}$ arising from structural relaxation within a short space range that greatly enhances the steady-state flexoelectric effect. Here we report a giant, optically i…
Young's modulus determines the mechanical loads required to elastically stretch a material, and also, the loads required to bend it, given that bending stretches one surface while compressing the opposite one. Flexoelectric materials have the additional property of becoming electrically polarized when bent. While numerous studies have characterized this flexoelectric coupling, its impact on the mechanical response, due to the energy cost of polarization upon bending, is largely unexplored. This intriguing contribution of strain gradient elasticity is expected to become visible at small length …
One of the most exciting properties of two dimensional materials is their sensitivity to external tuning of the electronic properties, for example via electric field or strain. Recently discovered analogues of phosphorene, group-IV monochalcogenides (MX with M = Ge, Sn and X = S, Se, Te), display several interesting phenomena intimately related to the in-plane strain, such as giant piezoelectricity and multiferroicity, which combine ferroelastic and ferroelectric properties. Here, using calculations from first principles, we reveal for the first time giant intrinsic spin Hall conductivities (S…
Dynamic second-order nonlinear susceptibilities, $χ^{(2)}(2ω,ω,ω)\equiv χ^{(2)}(ω)$, are calculated here within a fully first-principles scheme for monolayered molybdenum dichalcogenides, $2H$-MoX$_2$ (X=S,Se,Te). The absolute values of $χ^{(2)}(ω)$ across the three chalcogens critically depend on the band gap energies upon uniform strain, yielding the highest $χ^{(2)}(0)\sim$ 140 pm/V for MoTe$_2$ in the static limit. Under this uniform in-plane stress, $2H$-MoX$_2$ can undergo direct-to-indirect transition of band gaps, which in turn substantially affects $χ^{(2)}(ω)$. The tunability of $χ^{…
A new method for estimation of intragranular strain fields in polycrystalline materials based on scanning three-dimensional X-ray diffraction data (scanning-3DXRD) is presented and evaluated. Given an apriori known anisotropic compliance, the regression method enforces the balance of linear and angular momentum in the linear elastic strain field reconstruction. By using a Gaussian Process (GP), the presented method can yield a spatial estimate of the uncertainty of the reconstructed strain field. Furthermore, constraints on spatial smoothness can be optimised with respect to measurements throu…
Phosphorene, an emerging elemental two-dimensional (2D) direct band gap semiconductor with fascinating structural and electronic properties distinctively different from other 2D materials such as graphene and MoS2, is promising for novel nanoelectronic and optoelectronic applications. Phonons, as one of the most important collective excitations, are at the heart for the device performance, as their interactions with electrons and photons govern the carrier mobility and light-emitting efficiency of the material. Here, through a detailed first-principles study, it is demonstrated that monolayer …
The shape recovery ability of shape-memory alloys vanishes below a critical size (~50nm), which prevents their practical applications at the nanoscale. In contrast, ferroic materials, even when scaled down to dimensions of a few nanometers, exhibit actuation strain through domain switching, though the generated strain is modest (~1%). Here, we develop free-standing twisted architectures of nanoscale ferroic oxides showing shape-memory effect with a giant recoverable strain (>10%). The twisted geometrical design amplifies the strain generated during ferroelectric domain switching, which cannot …
Multilayer MoS2 possesses highly anisotropic thermal conductivities along in-plane and cross-plane directions that could hamper heat dissipation in electronics. With about 9% cross-plane compressive strain created by hydrostatic pressure in a diamond anvil cell, we observed about 12 times increase in the cross-plane thermal conductivity of multilayer MoS2. Our experimental and theoretical studies reveal that this drastic change arises from the greatly strengthened interlayer interaction and heavily modified phonon dispersions along cross-plane direction, with negligible contribution from elect…
Concepts for memories based on the manipulation of giant magnetostrictive nanomagnets by stress pulses have garnered recent attention due to their potential for ultra-low energy operation in the high storage density limit. Here we discuss the feasibility of making such memories in light of the fact that the Gilbert damping of such materials is typically quite high. We report the results of numerical simulations for several classes of toggle precessional and non-toggle dissipative magnetoelastic switching modes. Material candidates for each of the several classes are analyzed and forms for the …
We report the strong dependence of resistance on uniaxial strain in monolayer WSe2 at various temperatures, where the gauge factor can reach as large as 2400. The observation of strain-dependent resistance and giant gauge factor is attributed to the emergence of nonzero Berry curvature dipole. Upon increasing strain, Berry curvature dipole can generate net orbital magnetization, which would introduce additional magnetic scattering, decreasing the mobility and thus conductivity. Our work demonstrates the strain engineering of Berry curvature and thus the transport properties, making monolayer W…
We investigate the electrostrictive response across a ferroelectric phase transition from first-principles calculations and refute the prevailing view of constant electrostriction across the ferroelectric phase boundary. We take as a case study the epitaxial strain-induced transition from para- to feroelectricity of \ce{KTaO3}. We show that the magnitude of the electrostriction diverges with the permitivity at the transition, hence exhibiting giant responses through a calculation of both the M and Q electrostrictive tensors. We explain the origin of this giant electrostrictive response in \ce{…
Piezoelectrics interconvert mechanical energy and electric charge and are widely used in actuators and sensors. The best performing materials are ferroelectrics at a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB), where several phases can intimately coexist. Switching between these phases by electric field produces a large electromechanical response. In the ferroelectric BiFeO$_3$, strain can be used to create an MPB-like phase mixture and thus to generate large electric field dependent strains. However, this enhanced response occurs at localized, randomly positioned regions of the film, which potentially …
We build a Cu-MoTe2-Cu device model and use first-principles density functional theory to study the transport properties of single-layer Td-MoTe2. We obtained the effect of strain on the energy band structure, transport properties, and photocurrent. The strain-induced photocurrent shows an anisotropy that reflects the modulation of the energy bands, including the Weyl point, by strain. The photocurrent can be suppressed to almost zero when the strain is applied along the vacuum direction. In contrast, the photocurrent can be significantly increased when the strain is applied along the transpor…
A set of thin film Mn$_x$Si$_{1-x}$ alloy samples with different manganese concentration x = 0.44 - 0.63 grown by the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method onto the Al$_2$O$_3$(0001) substrate was investigated in the temperature range 4 - 300 K using ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements in the wide range of frequencies (f = 7 - 60 GHz) and magnetic fields (H = 0 - 30 kOe). For samples with x = 0.52 - 0.55, FMR data show clear evidence of ferromagnetism with high Curie temperatures T$_\text{C}$ ~ 300 K. These samples demonstrate complex and unusual character of magnetic anisotropy describe…
The realization of ordered strain fields in two-dimensional crystals is an intriguing perspective in many respects, including the instauration of novel transport regimes and the achievement of enhanced device performances. In this work, we demonstrate the possibility to subject micrometric regions of atomically-thin molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) to giant strains with the desired ordering. Mechanically-deformed MoS2 membranes can be obtained by proton-irradiation of bulk flakes, leading to the formation of monolayer domes containing pressurized hydrogen. By pre-patterning the flakes via depositi…
