In this paper we introduce StoRIR - a stochastic room impulse response generation method dedicated to audio data augmentation in machine learning applications. This technique, in contrary to geometrical methods like image-source or ray tracing, does not require prior definition of room geometry, absorption coefficients or microphone and source placement and is dependent solely on the acoustic parameters of the room. The method is intuitive, easy to implement and allows to generate RIRs of very complicated enclosures. We show that StoRIR, when used for audio data augmentation in a speech enhancement task, allows deep learning models to achieve better results on a wide range of metrics than when using the conventional image-source method, effectively improving many of them by more than 5 %. We publish a Python implementation of StoRIR online
Room acoustics measurements are used in many areas of audio research, from physical acoustics modelling and speech enhancement to virtual reality applications. This paper documents the technical specifications and choices made in the measurement of a dataset of spatial room impulse responses (SRIRs) in a variable acoustics room. Two spherical microphone arrays are used: the mh Acoustics Eigenmike em32 and the Zylia ZM-1, capable of up to fourth- and third-order Ambisonic capture, respectively. The dataset consists of three source and seven receiver positions, repeated with five configurations …

We present pyroomacoustics, a software package aimed at the rapid development and testing of audio array processing algorithms. The content of the package can be divided into three main components: an intuitive Python object-oriented interface to quickly construct different simulation scenarios involving multiple sound sources and microphones in 2D and 3D rooms; a fast C implementation of the image source model for general polyhedral rooms to efficiently generate room impulse responses and simulate the propagation between sources and receivers; and finally, reference implementations of popular…

Audio source separation is often used as preprocessing of various applications, and one of its ultimate goals is to construct a single versatile model capable of dealing with the varieties of audio signals. Since sampling frequency, one of the audio signal varieties, is usually application specific, the preceding audio source separation model should be able to deal with audio signals of all sampling frequencies specified in the target applications. However, conventional models based on deep neural networks (DNNs) are trained only at the sampling frequency specified by the training data, and th…
This paper introduces a novel technique for reconstructing the phase of modified spectrograms of audio signals. From the analysis of mixtures of sinusoids we obtain relationships between phases of successive time frames in the Time-Frequency (TF) domain. To obtain similar relationships over frequencies, in particular within onset frames, we study an impulse model. Instantaneous frequencies and attack times are estimated locally to encompass the class of non-stationary signals such as vibratos. These techniques ensure both the vertical coherence of partials (over frequencies) and the horizontal…

This paper considers methods for audio display in a CAVE-type virtual reality theater, a 3 m cube with displays covering all six rigid faces. Headphones are possible since the user's headgear continuously measures ear positions, but loudspeakers are preferable since they enhance the sense of total immersion. The proposed solution consists of open-loop acoustic point control. The transfer function, a matrix of room frequency responses from the loudspeakers to the ears of the user, is inverted using multi-channel inversion methods, to create exactly the desired sound field at the user's ears. Th…

We present an open-access dataset of over 8000 acoustic impulse from 160 microphones spread across the body and affixed to wearable accessories. The data can be used to evaluate audio capture and array processing systems using wearable devices such as hearing aids, headphones, eyeglasses, jewelry, and clothing. We analyze the acoustic transfer functions of different parts of the body, measure the effects of clothing worn over microphones, compare measurements from a live human subject to those from a mannequin, and simulate the noise-reduction performance of several beamformers. The results su…

Modeling room acoustics in a field setting involves some degree of blind parameter estimation from noisy and reverberant audio. Modern approaches leverage convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in tandem with time-frequency representation. Using short-time Fourier transforms to develop these spectrogram-like features has shown promising results, but this method implicitly discards a significant amount of audio information in the phase domain. Inspired by recent works in speech enhancement, we propose utilizing novel phase-related features to extend recent approaches to blindly estimate the so-ca…

Acoustic environment characterization opens doors for sound reproduction innovations, smart EQing, speech enhancement, hearing aids, and forensics. Reverberation time, clarity, and direct-to-reverberant ratio are acoustic parameters that have been defined to describe reverberant environments. They are closely related to speech intelligibility and sound quality. As explained in the ISO3382 standard, they can be derived from a room measurement called the Room Impulse Response (RIR). However, measuring RIRs requires specific equipment and intrusive sound to be played. The recent audio combined wi…
HOMULA-RIR: A Room Impulse Response Dataset for Teleconferencing and Spatial Audio Applications Acquired Through Higher-Order Microphones and Uniform Linear Microphone Arrays
Deep learning approaches have emerged that aim to transform an audio signal so that it sounds as if it was recorded in the same room as a reference recording, with applications both in audio post-production and augmented reality. In this work, we propose FiNS, a Filtered Noise Shaping network that directly estimates the time domain room impulse response (RIR) from reverberant speech. Our domain-inspired architecture features a time domain encoder and a filtered noise shaping decoder that models the RIR as a summation of decaying filtered noise signals, along with direct sound and early reflect…
The acoustic space in which a sound is created and heard plays an essential role in how that sound is perceived by affording a unique sense of \textit{presence}. Every sound we hear results from successive convolution operations intrinsic to the sound source and external factors such as microphone characteristics and room impulse responses. Typically, researchers use an excitation such as a pistol shot or balloon pop as an impulse signal with which an auralization can be created. The room "impulse" responses convolved with the signal of interest can transform the input sound into the sound pla…

Although 360\textdegree{} cameras ease the capture of panoramic footage, it remains challenging to add realistic 360\textdegree{} audio that blends into the captured scene and is synchronized with the camera motion. We present a method for adding scene-aware spatial audio to 360\textdegree{} videos in typical indoor scenes, using only a conventional mono-channel microphone and a speaker. We observe that the late reverberation of a room's impulse response is usually diffuse spatially and directionally. Exploiting this fact, we propose a method that synthesizes the directional impulse response b…
In this work, we propose using differentiable cascaded biquads to model an audio distortion effect. We extend trainable infinite impulse response (IIR) filters to the hyperconditioned case, in which a transformation is learned to directly map external parameters of the distortion effect to its internal filter and gain parameters, along with activations necessary to ensure filter stability. We propose a novel, efficient training scheme of IIR filters by means of a Fourier transform. Our models have significantly fewer parameters and reduced complexity relative to more traditional black-box neur…
Measuring the acoustic characteristics of a space is often done by capturing its impulse response (IR), a representation of how a full-range stimulus sound excites it. This work generates an IR from a single image, which can then be applied to other signals using convolution, simulating the reverberant characteristics of the space shown in the image. Recording these IRs is both time-intensive and expensive, and often infeasible for inaccessible locations. We use an end-to-end neural network architecture to generate plausible audio impulse responses from single images of acoustic environments. …

Any audio recording encapsulates the unique fingerprint of the associated acoustic environment, namely the background noise and reverberation. Considering the scenario of a room equipped with a fixed smart speaker device with one or more microphones and a wearable smart device (watch, glasses or smartphone), we employed the improved proportionate normalized least mean square adaptive filter to estimate the relative room impulse response mapping the audio recordings of the two devices. We performed inter-device distance estimation by exploiting a new set of features obtained extending the defin…
We present a method for improving the quality of synthetic room impulse responses for far-field speech recognition. We bridge the gap between the fidelity of synthetic room impulse responses (RIRs) and the real room impulse responses using our novel, TS-RIRGAN architecture. Given a synthetic RIR in the form of raw audio, we use TS-RIRGAN to translate it into a real RIR. We also perform real-world sub-band room equalization on the translated synthetic RIR. Our overall approach improves the quality of synthetic RIRs by compensating low-frequency wave effects, similar to those in real RIRs. We ev…

Recent work has shown the possibility of adversarial attacks on automatic speechrecognition (ASR) systems. However, in the vast majority of work in this area, theattacks have been executed only in the digital space, or have involved short phrasesand static room settings. In this paper, we demonstrate a physically realizableaudio adversarial attack. We base our approach specifically on a psychoacoustic-property-based loss function, and automated generation of room impulse responses, to create adversarial attacks that are robust when played over a speaker in multiple environments. We show that s…
We propose a mesh-based neural network (MESH2IR) to generate acoustic impulse responses (IRs) for indoor 3D scenes represented using a mesh. The IRs are used to create a high-quality sound experience in interactive applications and audio processing. Our method can handle input triangular meshes with arbitrary topologies (2K - 3M triangles). We present a novel training technique to train MESH2IR using energy decay relief and highlight its benefits. We also show that training MESH2IR on IRs preprocessed using our proposed technique significantly improves the accuracy of IR generation. We reduce …
Every sound that we hear is the result of successive convolutional operations (e.g. room acoustics, microphone characteristics, resonant properties of the instrument itself, not to mention characteristics and limitations of the sound reproduction system). In this work we seek to determine the best room in which to perform a particular piece using AI. Additionally, we use room acoustics as a way to enhance the perceptual qualities of a given sound. Historically, rooms (particularly Churches and concert halls) were designed to host and serve specific musical functions. In some cases the architec…

We describe a private audio messaging system that uses echoes to unscramble messages at a few predetermined locations in a room. The system works by splitting the audio into short chunks and emitting them from different loudspeakers. The chunks are filtered so that as they echo around the room, they sum to noise everywhere except at a few chosen focusing spots where they exactly reproduce the intended messages. Unlike in the case of standard personal audio zones, the proposed method renders sound outside the focusing spots unintelligible. Our method essentially depends on echoes: the room acts…

Binaural audio provides human listeners with an immersive spatial sound experience, but most existing videos lack binaural audio recordings. We propose an audio spatialization method that draws on visual information in videos to convert their monaural (single-channel) audio to binaural audio. Whereas existing approaches leverage visual features extracted directly from video frames, our approach explicitly disentangles the geometric cues present in the visual stream to guide the learning process. In particular, we develop a multi-task framework that learns geometry-aware features for binaural a…
The Image Source Method (ISM) is one of the most employed techniques to calculate acoustic Room Impulse Responses (RIRs), however, its computational complexity grows fast with the reverberation time of the room and its computation time can be prohibitive for some applications where a huge number of RIRs are needed. In this paper, we present a new implementation that dramatically improves the computation speed of the ISM by using Graphic Processing Units (GPUs) to parallelize both the simulation of multiple RIRs and the computation of the images inside each RIR. Additional speedups were achieve…

Stereophonic audio, especially binaural audio, plays an essential role in immersive viewing environments. Recent research has explored generating visually guided stereophonic audios supervised by multi-channel audio collections. However, due to the requirement of professional recording devices, existing datasets are limited in scale and variety, which impedes the generalization of supervised methods in real-world scenarios. In this work, we propose PseudoBinaural, an effective pipeline that is free of binaural recordings. The key insight is to carefully build pseudo visual-stereo pairs with mo…
