Calculations of heat transfer between two plates of gold in an extreme near field is performed taking into account the existence of the electric double layer on metal surfaces. For d < 3nm the double layer contribution exceeds the predictions of the conversional theory of the heat transfer by several orders of magnitudes. This effect is due to a coupling between the radiation electric field and the double layer dipole moment. The results obtained can be used for the heat management at the nanoscale by intentionally changing the parameters of surface dipoles with the help of engineering.
We investigate the full counting statistics of extreme-near-field radiative heat transfer using nonequilibrium Green's function formalism. In the extreme near field, the electron-electron interactions between two metallic bodies dominate the heat transfer process. We start from a general tight-binding electron Hamiltonian and obtain a Levitov-Lesovik like scaled cumulant generating function (SCGF) using random phase approximation to deal with electron-electron interaction. The expressions of heat current and its fluctuation (second cumulant) are obtained from the SCGF. The fluctuation symmetry…
We investigate an influence of the random external electric field on the 2D extremely short optical pulses propagation in the silicene. The random electric field is perpendicular to the silicene plane. An effective equation has the form of a wave equation with saturating nonlinearity. We analyze the dependences of the electromagnetic field intensity on the parameters of a problem.
We calculate heat transfer between a 2D sheet (e.g. graphene) and a dielectric in presence of a gate voltage. The gate potential induces surface charge densities on the sheet and dielectric, which results in electric field, which is coupled to the surface displacements and, as a consequence, resulting an additional contributions to the radiative heat transfer. The electrostatic and van der Waals interactions between the surface displacement result in the phonon heat transfer, which we calculate taking into account the nonlocality of these interactions. Numerical calculations are presented for …
We analyze the heat transfer between two metals separated by a vacuum gap in the extreme near-field regime. In this cross-over regime between conduction and radiation, heat exchanges are mediated by photon, phonon and electron tunneling. We quantify the relative contribution of these carriers with respect to both the separation distance between the two bodies and the applied bias voltage. In the presence of a weak bias ($V_{\rm b}<100$~mV), electrons and phonons can contribute equally to the heat transfer near contact, while the contribution of photons becomes negligible. On the other hand, fo…
We study the heat generation in a nano-device with an electric current passing through the device. For the first time, a general formula for the heat generation is derived by using the nonequilibrium Keldysh Green functions. This formula can be applied in both the linear and nonlinear transport regions, for time-dependent systems, and with multi-terminal devices. The formula is also valid when the nano-device contains various interactions. As an application of the formula, the heat generation of a lead-quantum dot-lead system is investigated. The dc and ac biases are studied in detail. We find…
Using the Keldysh Green function technique, we calculate the finite-frequency correlator between the electrical current and the heat current flowing through a quantum dot connected to reservoirs. At equilibrium, we find that this quantity, called mixed noise, is linked to the thermoelectric ac-conductance by the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Out-of-equilibrium, we discuss its spectrum and find evidence of the close relationship between the mixed noise and the thermopower. We study the spectral coherence and identify the conditions to have a strong correlation between the electrical and heat…
The heat generation by an electric current flowing through a quantum dot with the dot containing both electron-electron interaction and electron-phonon interaction, is studied. Using the non-equilibrium Keldysh Green's function method, the current-induced heat generation is obtained. We find that for a small phonon frequency, heat generation is proportional to the current. However, for a large phonon frequency, heat generation is in general qualitatively different from the current. It is non-monotonic with current and many unique and interesting behaviors emerge. The heat generation could be v…
High electric conductivity ~100 MegaSiemens/m and Seebeck coefficient >200 mkV/K of carbon nanotubes (CNT) make them attractive for a variety of applications. Unfortunately, a high thermal conductivity ~ 3000 W/(m*K) due to the phonon transport limits their capability for transforming energy between the heat and electricity. Here we show that increasing the charge carrier concentrations not only leads to an increase of both electric conductivity and Seebeck coeffcient, but also causes a substantial suppression of the thermal conductivity due to intensifying the phonon-electron collisions. A st…
We establish a theory of optimal efficiency and power for three-terminal thermoelectric engines which have two independent output electric currents and one input heat current. This set-up goes beyond the conventional heat engines with only one output electric current. For such a set-up, we derive the optimal efficiency and power and their trade-off for three-terminal heat engines with and without time-reversal symmetry. The formalism goes beyond the known optimal efficiency and power for systems with or without time-reversal symmetry, showing interesting features that have not been revealed be…
The interpretation of some recent measurements of spin-dependent voltage for which the electric conduction does not play a role rises some new fundamental questions about the effects of spin-dependent heat currents. A two spin-channel model is proposed in order to describe the effect of out-of-equilibrium spin-dependent heat carriers in electric conductors and insulators. It is shown that thermal spin-accumulation can be generated by the heat currents only over an arbitrarily long distance for both electric conductors or electric insulators. The diffusion equations for thermal spin-accumulatio…

The heating of a two-dimensional electron gas by an rf electric field generated by a surface acoustic wave, which can be described by an electron temperature $T_e$, has been investigated. It is shown that the energy balance of the electron gas is determined by electron scattering by the piezoelectric potential of the acoustic phonons with $T_e$ determined from measurements at frequencies $f$= 30 and 150 MHz. The experimental curves of the energy loss $Q$ versus $T_e$ at different SAW frequencies depend on the value of $ω\barτ_ε$, compared to 1, where $ \bar τ_ε$ is the relaxation time of the a…
We demonstrate a fully electric control of the heat flux, which can be continuously modulated by an externally applied electric field in PbTiO$_3$, a prototypical ferroelectric perovskite, revealing the mechanisms by which experimentally accessible fields can be used to tune the thermal conductivity by as much as 50% at room temperature.
We study photonic heat conduction between two resistors coupled weakly to a single superconducting microwave cavity. At low enough temperature, the dominating part of the heat exchanged between the resistors is transmitted by single-photon excitations of the fundamental mode of the cavity. This manifestation of single-photon heat conduction should be experimentally observable with the current state of the art. Our scheme can possibly be utilized in remote interference-free temperature control of electric components and environment engineering for superconducting qubits coupled to cavities.
The authors describe how acoustic phonons can directly tunnel through vacuum and, therefore, transmit energy and conduct heat between bodies that are separated by a vacuum gap. This effect is enabled by introducing a coupling mechanism, such as piezoelectricity, that strongly couples electric field and lattice deformation. The electric field leaks into the vacuum as an evanescent field, which leads to finite solid-vacuum-solid transmission probability. Due to strong resonances in the system some phonons can go through the vacuum gap with (or close to) unity transmission, which leads to signifi…
A conversion of thermal energy into electricity is considered in the electrically polarized graphene stripes with zigzag edges where the heavy chiral fermion (HCF) states are formed. The stripes are characterized by a high electric conductance Ge and by a significant Seebeck coefficient S. The electric current in the stripes is induced due to a non-equilibrium thermal injection of "hot" electrons. This thermoelectric generation process might be utilized for building of thermoelectric generators with an exceptionally high figure of merit ZδT \simeq 100 >> 1 and with an appreciable electric powe…
We consider theoretically the spaser excited electrically via a nanowire with ballistic quantum conductance. We show that in the extreme quantum regime, i.e., for a single conductance-quantum nanowire, the spaser with the core made of common plasmonic metals, such as silver and gold, is fundamentally possible. For ballistic nanowires with multiple-quanta or non-quantized conductance, the performance of the spaser is enhanced in comparison with the extreme quantum limit. The electrically-pumped spaser is promising as an optical source, nanoamplifier, and digital logic device for optoelectronic …
Extreme near-field heat transfer between metallic surfaces is a subject of debate as the state-of-the-art theory and experiments are in disagreement on the energy carriers driving heat transport. In an effort to elucidate the physics of extreme near-field heat transfer between metallic surfaces, this Letter presents a comprehensive model combining radiation, acoustic phonon and electron transport across sub-10-nm vacuum gaps. The results obtained for gold surfaces show that in the absence of bias voltage, acoustic phonon transport is dominant for vacuum gaps smaller than ~2 nm. The application…
The nonlinear response of electrons (holes) in doped graphene on ac pumping is considered theoretically for the frequency region above the energy relaxation rate but below the momentum and carrier-carrier scattering rates. Temporally-dependent heating of electrons by a strong ac field, which is described within the energy balance approach, leads to an effective generation of high-order harmonics. The efficiency of up-conversion of the 1 mm radiation into the third harmonic by a single-layer graphene is about 10^{-7} at pumping level ~100 kW/cm^2, room temperature, and concentration ~5 x 10^{11…
We demonstrate a new type of dual gate transistor to induce record electric fields through two-dimensional materials (2DMs). At the heart of this device is a 2DM suspended between two volumes of ionic liquid (IL) with independently controlled potentials. The potential difference between the ILs falls across an ultrathin layer consisting of the 2DM and the electrical double layers above and below it, thereby producing an intense electric field across the 2DM. We determine the field strength via i) electrical transport measurements and ii) direct measurements of electrochemical potentials of the…
Heat is detrimental for the operation of quantum systems, yet it fundamentally behaves according to quantum mechanics, being phase coherent and universally quantum-limited regardless of its carriers. Due to their robustness, superconducting circuits integrating dissipative elements are ideal candidates to emulate many-body phenomena in quantum heat transport, hitherto scarcely explored experimentally. However, their ability to tackle the underlying full physical richness is severely hindered by the exclusive use of a magnetic flux as a control parameter and requires complementary approaches. H…
