We study the single-photon transport in the coupled-resonator waveguide (CRW) controlled by an imperfect cavity. A Lorentzian spectrum is introduced to describe the dissipation. We find that the probability current conservation can be broken, although the imperfect cavity is a Hermitian system. The coupling strength between the imperfect cavity and the CRW has significant influences near the resonant frequency. With the increase of the coupling strength, the transmission coefficient becomes smaller. The spectral width plays a dominant role under the off-resonant condition, where the transmission coefficient is greatly suppressed with the increase of the spectral width. We also observe an abrupt jump of the transmission and reflection coefficients when the hopping amplitude is large enough. All the distinctive behaviors are closely related to the complex effective potential induced by the imperfect cavity.
Analog quantum simulators rely on programmable quantum devices to emulate Hamiltonians describing various physical phenomenon. Photonic coupled cavity arrays are a promising platform for realizing such devices. Using a silicon photonic coupled cavity array made up of 8 high quality-factor resonators and equipped with specially designed thermo-optic island heaters for independent control of cavities, we demonstrate a programmable device implementing tight-binding Hamiltonians with access to the full eigen-energy spectrum. We report a ~50% reduction in the thermal crosstalk between neighboring s…
Optical cavities in the near-concentric regime have near-degenerate transverse modes; the tight focusing transverse modes in this regime enable strong coupling with atoms. These features provide an interesting platform to explore multi-mode interaction between atoms and light. Here, we use a spatial light modulator (SLM) to shape the phase of an incoming light beam to match several Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) modes of a near-concentric optical cavity. We demonstrate coupling efficiency close to the theoretical prediction for single LG modes and well-defined combinations of them, limited mainly by i…
Cavity-mediated two-qubit gates, for example between solid-state spins, are attractive for quantum network applications. We propose three schemes to implement a controlled phase-flip gate mediated by a cavity. The main advantage of all these schemes is the possibility to perform them using a cavity with high cooperativity, but not in the strong coupling regime. We calculate the fidelity of each scheme in detail, taking into account the most important realistic imperfections, and compare them to highlight the optimal conditions for each scheme. Using these results, we discuss which quantum syst…
We propose a quantum memory protocol based on trapping photons in a fiber-integrated cavity, comprised of a birefringent fiber with dichroic reflective end facets. Photons are switched into resonance with the fiber cavity by intracavity Bragg-scattering frequency translation, driven by ancillary control pulses. After the storage delay, photons are switched out of resonance with the cavity, again by intracavity frequency translation. We demonstrate storage of quantum-level THz-bandwidth coherent states for a lifetime up to 16 cavity round trips, or 200ns, and a maximum overall efficiency of 73%…
Two dimensional photon gases trapped in dye-filled microcavities can undergo thermalization and nearly ideal equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation. However, they are inherently driven-dissipative systems that can exhibit an intricate interplay between the thermalizing influence of the environment given by the dye solution and the pump and loss processes driving the system out of equilibrium. We show that this interplay gives rise to a robust mechanism for two-mode emission, when the system is driven by an off-centered pump beam. Namely, after the system starts lasing in the dominantly pumped …
We study the phase controlled transmission properties in a compound system consisting of a 3D copper cavity and an yttrium iron garnet (YIG) sphere. By tuning the relative phase of the magnon pumping and cavity probe tones, constructive and destructive interferences occur periodically, which strongly modify both the cavity field transmission spectra and the group delay of light. Moreover, the tunable amplitude ratio between pump-probe tones allows us to further improve the signal absorption or amplification, accompanied by either significantly enhanced optical advance or delay. Both the phase …
Integration of single-photon emitters (SPEs) with resonant photonic structures is a promising approach for realizing compact and efficient single-photon sources for quantum communications, computing, and sensing. Efficient interaction between the SPE and the photonic cavity requires that the cavity's resonance matches the SPE emission line. Here we demonstrate a new method for tuning silicon nitride (Si3N4) microring cavities via controlled deposition of the cladding layers. Guided by numerical simulations, we deposit silicon dioxide (SiO2) nanolayers onto Si3N4 ridge structures in steps of 50…
The radiation emitted by a classically pumped three-level $Λ$-type emitter in a resonator cavity featuring both radiative and unwanted losses is studied. In particular, the efficiency of one-photon Fock state excitation of the outgoing wave packet and the spatio-temporal shape of the wave packet are investigated. It is shown that for given shape of the emitter--cavity interaction, adjusting the shape of the pump pulse renders it possible to generate the emission of one-photon Fock state wave packets of desired shape with high efficiency.
The Fano effect arises from the interference between a continuum of propagating modes and a localised resonance. By using this resonance as one of the mirrors in an optical cavity, a localised mode with a highly asymmetric line shape is obtained. Placing a single quantum emitter inside the cavity leads to a new regime of cavity quantum electrodynamics, where the light-matter interaction dynamics is fundamentally different from that observed in a conventional cavity with Lorenztian lineshape. Furthermore, when the vibrational dynamics of the emitter is taken into account, an intricate phonon-ph…
We present a way to realize a multiplex-controlled phase gate of n-1 control qubits simultaneously controlling one target qubit, with n qubits distributed in n different cavities. This multiqubit gate is implemented by using n qutrits (three-level natural or artificial atoms) placed in n different cavities, which are coupled to an auxiliary qutrit. Here, the two logic states of a qubit are represented by the two lowest levels of a qutrit placed in a cavity. We show that this n-qubit controlled phase gate can be realized using only 2n+2 basic operations, i.e., the number of required basic opera…
We propose a scheme that can generate tunable optomechanically induced transparency in a hybrid piezooptomechanical cavity system. The system is composed of a high-quality planar distributed Bragg reflector cavity modified with an embedded Gaussian-shaped defect. Moreover, interdigitated transducers are fabricated on the surface of the cavity to generate surface acoustic waves. Under the actuation of the surface acoustic wave, the upper Bragg mirrors can be vibrated as a bulk acoustic resonator, and the distributed Bragg reflector cavity becomes a standard three-level optomechanical system. In…
It has recently been shown [Rossi et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 123603 (2017); ibid. 120, 073601 (2018)] that feedback--controlled in--loop light can be used to enhance the efficiency of optomechanical systems. We analyse the theoretical ground at the basis of this approach and explore its potentialities and limitations. We discuss the validity of the model, analyse the properties of in-loop cavities and we show how they can be used to observe coherent optomechanical oscillations also with weakly coupled system, improve the sideband cooling performance, and increase ponderomotive squeezing.
We demonstrate photon-mediated interactions between two individually trapped atoms coupled to a nanophotonic cavity. Specifically, we observe superradiant line broadening when the atoms are resonant with the cavity, and level repulsion when the cavity is coupled to the atoms in the dispersive regime. Our approach makes use of individual control over the internal states of the atoms, their position with respect to the cavity mode, as well as the light shifts to tune atomic transitions individually, allowing us to directly observe the anti-crossing of the superradiant and subradiant two-atom sta…
Ultracold ground-state molecules can be formed from ultracold atoms via photoassociation followed by a spontaneous emission process. Typically, the molecular products are distributed over a range of final states. Here, we propose to use an optical cavity with high cooperativity to selectively enhance the population of a pre-determined final state by controlling the spontaneous emission. During this process, a photon will be emitted into the cavity mode. Detection of this photon heralds a single reaction. We discuss the efficiency and the dynamics of cavity-assisted molecule formation in the fr…
We propose and analyze a microscopic Stirling heat engine based on an optomechanical system. The working fluid is a single vibrational mode of a mechanical resonator, which interacts by radiation pressure with a feedback-controlled optical cavity. The cavity light is used to engineer the thermal reservoirs and to steer the resonator through a thermodynamic cycle. In particular, the feedback is used to properly modulate the light fluctuations inside the cavity and hence to realize efficient thermodynamic transformations with realistic optomechanical devices.
Hyper-parallel quantum information processing is a promising and beneficial research field. In this paper, we present a method to implement a hyper-parallel controlled-phase-flip (hyper-CPF) gate for frequency-, spatial-, and time-bin-encoded qubits by coupling flying photons to trapped nitrogen vacancy (NV) defect centers. The scheme, which differs from their conventional parallel counterparts, is specifically advantageous in decreasing against the dissipate noise, increasing the quantum channel capacity, and reducing the quantum resource overhead. The gate qubits with frequency, spatial, and…
We propose a scheme that is able to generate the microwave controlled optical double optome-chanical induced transparency (OMIT) in a hybrid piezo-optomechanical cavity system, which a piezoelectric optomechanical crystal AlN-nanobeam resonator is placed in a superconducting microwave cavity, and the AlN-nanobeam resonator can be simultaneously driven by both the optical field via the radiation pressure and the microwave field via the piezoelectric interaction. We show that in the presence of a strong pumped optical field applied to the optomechanical crystal cavity through the optical wavegui…
We explore theoretically how the coupling to cavity vacuum fields affects the electron transport in quantum conductors due to the counter-rotating-wave terms of light-matter interaction. We determine the quantum conductance in terms of the transmission coefficients predicted by an effective electron Hamiltonian. The coupling between bare electronic states is mediated by virtual processes involving intermediate states with one electron (or one hole) on top of the Fermi sea and one virtual cavity photon. We study the behavior of the quantum conductance in the presence of artificial or disordered…
