In this work, we study the general characteristics of Be star light curves from TESS sectors 1-26 in the light of a model we call the "impulsive magnetic rotator". It is found that 73 percent of 441 classical Be stars are short-period variables. The light curves are characterised by non-coherent periods dominated by the fundamental and first harmonic with variable relative amplitudes. By comparing the equatorial rotational velocities obtained from the photometric fundamental periods with the projected rotational velocities,it is shown that the fundamental period is indistinguishable from the rotation period. The distributions of the projected rotational velocities and the equatorial rotational velocities for Be and non-Be stars are discussed. Using the equatorial rotational velocities of Be stars directly determined from the photometric period, it is found that, on average, Be stars rotate at about 0.66 of critical velocity. This result is independent of assumptions concerning gravity darkening. It is shown that the rotational amplitudes of Be stars increase with effective temperature and are considerably higher than those of non-Be stars. The amplitude distributions of Be and non-Be stars are also significantly different. Of particular interest is a large rise in rotational amplitudes from A0 to B5 for non-Be stars. We suspect that this may be a result of the increasing importance of a line-driven wind. Perhaps the Be stars are just those with greatest surface activity with increased mass loss aided by rapid rotation.
We measure rotation periods and sinusoidal amplitudes in Evryscope light curves for 122 two-minute K5-M4 TESS targets selected for strong flaring. The Evryscope array of telescopes has observed all bright nearby stars in the South, producing two-minute cadence light curves since 2016. Long-term, high-cadence observations of rotating flare stars probe the complex relationship between stellar rotation, starspots, and superflares. We detect periods from 0.3487 to 104 d, and observe amplitudes from 0.008 to 0.216 g' mag. We find the Evryscope amplitudes are larger than those in TESS with the effec…
In our previous study of low mass stars using TESS, we found a handful which show a periodic modulation on a period <1 d but also displayed no flaring activity. Here we present the results of a systematic search for Ultra Fast Rotators (UFRs) in the southern ecliptic hemisphere which were observed in 2 min cadence with TESS. Using data from Gaia DR2, we obtain a sample of over 13,000 stars close to the lower main sequence. Of these, we identify 609 stars which lie on the lower main sequence and have a periodic modulation <1 d. The fraction of stars which show flares appears to drop significant…
The Tucana-Horologium Association (Tuc-Hor) is a 40 Myr old moving group in the southern sky. In this work, we measure the rotation periods of 313 Tuc-Hor objects with TESS light curves derived from TESS full frame images and membership lists driven by Gaia EDR3 kinematics and known youth indicators. We recover a period for 81.4% of the sample and report 255 rotaion periods for Tuc-Hor objects. From these objects we identify 11 candidate binaries based on multiple periodic signals or outlier Gaia DR2 and EDR3 re-normalised unit weight error (RUWE) values. We also identify three new complex rot…
Since the end of 2018, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) provides high-quality space data on stellar photometry to the astronomical community. We present the results of an analysis of TESS photometric data for known slowly rotating magnetic chemically peculiar (mCP) stars. In general, mCP stars show an inhomogeneous distribution of elements in their stellar atmospheres that leads to spectroscopic (line profile) and photometric (light curve) variations over the rotation period. In the frame of the oblique magnetic rotator (OMR) model, patches of enhanced chemical abundance on the…
As more exoplanets are being discovered around ultracool dwarfs, understanding their magnetic activity -- and the implications for habitability -- is of prime importance. To find stellar flares and photometric signatures related to starspots, continuous monitoring is necessary, which can be achieved with spaceborn observatories like the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). We present an analysis of TRAPPIST-1 like ultracool dwarfs with TESS full-frame image photometry from the first two years of the primary mission. A volume-limited sample up to 50 pc is constructed consisting of 339 …
Impulsive short term variations occur in all kinds of solar-type stars. They are the results of complex phenomena such as the stellar magnetic field reconnection, low-level variability or in some cases even star-planet interactions. The radiation arising from these events is often highly energetic and, in stars hosting planets, may interact with the planetary atmospheres. Studying the rate of these energetic phenomena is fundamental to understand their role in modifying the chemical composition or, in some extreme cases, to the disruption of the planetary atmospheres. Here, we present a new pr…
Mercury-manganese (HgMn) stars are late-B upper main sequence chemically peculiar stars distinguished by large overabundances of heavy elements, slow rotation, and frequent membership in close binary systems. These stars lack strong magnetic fields typical of magnetic Bp stars but occasionally exhibit non-uniform surface distributions of chemical elements. The physical origin and the extent of this spot formation phenomenon remains unknown. Here we use 2-min cadence light curves of 64 HgMn stars observed by the TESS satellite during the first two years of its operation to investigate the incid…
The long-term, high precision photometry delivered by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) enables us to gain new insight into known and hitherto well-studied stars. In this paper, we present the result of our TESS study of the photospheric activity of the rapid rotator AB Doradus. Due to its favorable position near the southern ecliptic pole, the TESS satellite recorded almost 600 rotations of AB Doradus with high cadence, allowing us to study starspots and flares on this ultra-active star. The observed peak-to-peak variation of the rotational modulations reaches almost 11 %, and …
Thanks to high-precision photometric data legacy from space telescopes like CoRoT and Kepler, the scientific community could detect and characterize the power spectra of hundreds of thousands of stars. Using the scaling relations, it is possible to estimate masses and radii for solar-type pulsators. However, these stars are not the only kind of stellar objects that follow these rules: $δ$ Scuti stars seem to be characterized with seismic indexes such as the large separation ($Δν$). Thanks to long-duration high-cadence TESS light curves, we analysed more than two thousand of this kind of classi…
Stellar rotation is a fundamental observable that drives different aspects of stellar and planetary evolution. In this work, we present an unprecedented manifold analysis of 160 B-type stars with light curves collected by the TESS space mission using three different procedures (Fast Fourier Transform, Lomb-Scargle, and wavelet techniques), accompanied by rigorous visual inspection in the search for rotation periodicities. This effort provides rotational periodicities for 6 new TESS B-type stars and confirmed periodicities for 22 targets with rotation periods previously listed in the literature…
The new photometric data on pulsating Ap star HD~27463 obtained recently with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (\textit{TESS}) are analysed to search for variability. Our analysis shows that HD~27463 exhibits two types of photometric variability. The low frequency variability with the period $P$ =~2.834274 $\pm$ 0.000008 d can be explained in terms of axial stellar rotation assuming the oblique magnetic rotator model and presence of surface abundance/brightness spots, while the detected high-frequency variations are characteristics of $δ$~Scuti pulsations. From the analysis of Balmer …
Stellar RV jitter due to surface activity may bias the RV semi-amplitude and mass of rocky planets. The amplitude of the jitter may be estimated from the uncertainty in the rotation period, allowing the mass to be more accurately obtained. We find candidate rotation periods for 17 out of 35 TESS Objects of Interest (TOI) hosting <3 R_Earth planets as part of the Magellan-TESS Survey, which is the first-ever statistically robust study of exoplanet masses and radii across the photo-evaporation gap. Seven periods are 3+ sigma detections, two are 1.5+ sigma, and 8 show plausible variability but th…
We report new, extremely precise, photopolarimetry of the rapidly-rotating A0 main-sequence star $ζ$ Aql, covering the wavelength range $\sim$400--900nm, which reveals a rotationally-induced signal. We model the polarimetry, together with the flux distribution and line profiles, in the framework of Roche geometry with $ω$-model gravity darkening, to establish the stellar parameters. An additional constraint is provided by TESS photometry, which shows variability with a period, $P_{\rm phot}$, of 11.1 hr. Modelling based on solid-body surface rotation gives rotation periods, $P_{\rm rot}$, that…
We have searched for short periodicities in the light curves of stars with $T_{\rm eff}$ cooler than 4000 K made from 2-minute cadence data obtained in TESS sectors 1 and 2. Herein we report the discovery of 10 rapidly rotating M-dwarfs with highly structured rotational modulation patterns among 10 M dwarfs found to have rotation periods less than 1 day. Star-spot models cannot explain the highly structured periodic variations which typically exhibit between 10 and 40 Fourier harmonics. A similar set of objects was previously reported following K2 observations of the Upper Scorpius association…
A dearth of close-in planets orbiting rapid rotators was reported almost a decade ago. According to this view only slowly spinning stars with rotation periods longer than 5-10 days would host planets with orbital periods shorter than 2 or 3 days. This Letter brings an enlarged and more detailed analysis that led us to the question: Is there really a dearth in that distribution or is it a dearth of data? For this new analysis, we combined different samples of Kepler and TESS stars with confirmed planets or planet candidates with measured stellar rotation periods, using Gaia data to perform an i…
Measurement of the angular momenta of pre-main-sequence stars: early evolution of slow and fast rotators and empirical constraints on spin-down torque mechanisms
The evolution of magnetism in late-type dwarfs remains murky, as we can only weakly predict levels of activity for M dwarfs of a given mass and age. We report results from our spectroscopic survey of M dwarfs in the Southern Continuous Viewing Zone (CVZ) of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). As the TESS CVZs overlap with those of the James Webb Space Telescope, our targets constitute a legacy sample for studies of nearby M dwarfs. For 122 stars, we obtained at least one $R\approx 2000$ optical spectrum with which we measure chromospheric $\mathrm{H}α$ emission, a proxy for magne…
We present stellar rotation rates derived from Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) light curves for stars in Upper Centaurus-Lupus (UCL; ~136 pc, ~16 Myr) and Lower Centaurus-Crux (LCC; ~115 pc, ~17 Myr). We find spot-modulated periods (P) for ~90% of members. The range of light curve and periodogram shapes echoes that found for other clusters with K2, but fewer multi-period stars may be an indication of different noise characteristics of TESS, or a result of the source selection methods here. The distribution of P as a function of color as a proxy for mass fits nicely in between that…
We investigate the flare-frequency distributions of 5 M-dwarfs that experienced superflares with energies in excess of $10^{33}$ erg detected by ASAS-SN. We use K2 and TESS short-cadence observations along with archival ASAS-SN data to categorise the flaring behaviour of these stars across a range of flare energies. We were able to extract a rotation period for 4 of the stars. They were all fast rotators ($P_{\mathrm{rot}} \leq 6 \textrm{d}$), implying relative youth. We find that the flare-frequency distributions for each of the stars are well fit by a power-law, with slopes between $α= 1.22$…
MQ Dra is a strongly magnetic Cataclysmic Variable whose white dwarf accretes material from its secondary star through a stellar wind at a low rate. TESS observations were made of MQ Dra in four sectors in Cycle 2 and show a short duration, high energy flare (~10^35 erg) which has a profile characteristic of a flare from the M5V secondary star. This is one of the few occasions where an energetic flare has been seen from a Polar. We find no evidence that the flare caused a change in the light curve following the event and consider whether a coronal mass ejection was associated with the flare. W…

Observations made using TESS revealed a sample of low mass stars which show a periodic modulation on a period $<0.2$~d. Surprisingly many of these Ultra Fast Rotating (UFR) stars showed no evidence of flare activity which would be expected from such rapidly rotating stars. We present results from a spectroscopic survey of UFRs using the Nordic Optical Telescope to search for radial velocity variations which could reveal evidence for binarity. Our sample of 29 sources have a photometric period between 0.1-0.2d, cover spectral classes of M0-4V, and show no evidence for flares. We detect only one…

As an open cluster orbits the Milky Way, gravitational fields distort it, stripping stars from the core and forming tidal tails. Recent work has identified tidal tails of the Praesepe cluster; we explore rotation periods as a way to confirm these candidate members. In open clusters, the rotation period distribution evolves over time due to magnetic braking. Since tidally stripped stars originally formed within the cluster, they should follow the same period distribution as in the cluster core. We analyze 96 candidate members observed by NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) missi…
Prompted by X-ray detections from multiple surveys, we investigated the A-type star HD 63021 and found that it is a double-lined spectroscopic binary with highly variable emission associated with the primary star. Analysis of our multi-epoch spectroscopic observations, the majority of which were carried out on small aperture telescopes, indicates a very short orbital period of just $2.9$ days, and a mass ratio M$_2$/M$_1$ of $0.23$. The A1 V star is a slow rotator, with a rotational speed of $\sim34$ km/s. Assuming its mass is $2.3$ M$_{\odot}$, the present-day secondary is an evolved star of …

Spinspotter is a robust and automated algorithm designed to extract stellar rotation periods from large photometric datasets with minimal supervision. Our approach uses the autocorrelation function (ACF) to identify stellar rotation periods up to one-third the observational baseline of the data. Our algorithm also provides a suite of diagnostics that describe the features in the ACF, which allows the user to fine-tune the tolerance with which to accept a period detection. We apply it to approximately 130,000 main-sequence stars observed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) at 2-…
We report on the detection of MKT J174641.0$-$321404, a new radio transient found in untargeted searches of wide-field MeerKAT radio images centred on the black hole X-ray binary H1743$-$322. MKT J174641.0$-$321404 is highly variable at 1.3 GHz and was detected three times during 11 observations of the field in late 2018, reaching a maximum flux density of 590 $\pm$ 60 $μ$Jy. We associate this radio transient with a high proper motion, M dwarf star SCR~1746$-$3214 12 pc away from the Sun. Multiwavelength observations of this M dwarf indicate flaring activity across the electromagnetic spectrum…
