To gain better understanding of the Ap stars with the longest rotation periods, we obtained high resolution spectra of a sample of super-slowly rotating Ap (ssrAp) star candidates identified by a TESS photometric survey, to confirm that they are indeed Ap stars, to check that their v sin i values are compatible with super-slow rotation, and to obtain a first estimate of their magnetic field strengths. We determined whenever possible their mean magnetic field modulus, their mean quadratic magnetic field, and an upper limit of their projected equatorial velocities. Eighteen of the 27 stars studied are typical Ap stars; most of the other nine appear to be misclassified. One of the Ap stars is not a slow rotator; it must be seen nearly pole-on. The properties of the remaining 17 are compatible with moderately to extremely long rotation periods. Eight new stars with resolved magnetically split lines in the visible range were discovered; their mean magnetic field modulus and their mean quadratic magnetic field were measured. The mean quadratic field could also be determined in five more stars. Five new spectroscopic binaries containing an Ap star were identified. Among the misclassified stars, one SB2 system with two similar, sharp-lined Am components was also discovered. The technique that we used to carry out a search for ssrAp star candidates using TESS data is validated, but appears limited by uncertainties in the spectral classification of Ap stars. The new magnetic field measurements obtained as part of this study lend further support to the tentative conclusions of our previous studies: the absence of periods longer than ~150 d in stars with magnetic fields stronger than ~7.5 kG, the lower rate of occurrence of super-slow rotation for field strengths less than ~2 kG than in the range ~3-7.5 kG, and the deficiency of slowly rotating Ap stars with field strengths between ~2 and ~3 kG.
The rotation periods of the magnetic Ap stars span five to six orders of magnitude. Period differentiation must have taken place at the pre-main sequence stage, but the physical processes that lead to it remain elusive. The study of Ap stars that have rotation periods of tens to hundreds of years represents a promising avenue to gain additional insight into the origin and evolution of rotation in Ap stars. Historically, almost all the longest period Ap stars known have been found to be strongly magnetic; very few weakly magnetic Ap stars with very long periods have been identified and studied.…
Interpretation of the oscillation spectrum of the slowly pulsating B-type star HD21071 is presented. We show that non-rotating models cannot account for the two highest amplitude frequencies and taking into account the effects of rotation is necessary. Rotating seismic models are constructed using various chemical compositions, opacity data, core overshooting parameters and rotational velocities. There are prospects for seismic modelling of SPB stars, even if no asymptotic pattern is observed in their oscillation spectra, provided an unambiguous mode identification is doable and the effects of…
Since the end of 2018, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) provides high-quality space data on stellar photometry to the astronomical community. We present the results of an analysis of TESS photometric data for known slowly rotating magnetic chemically peculiar (mCP) stars. In general, mCP stars show an inhomogeneous distribution of elements in their stellar atmospheres that leads to spectroscopic (line profile) and photometric (light curve) variations over the rotation period. In the frame of the oblique magnetic rotator (OMR) model, patches of enhanced chemical abundance on the…

Rotating stellar convection transports angular momentum towards the equator, generating the characteristic equatorial acceleration of the solar rotation while the radial flux of angular momentum is always inwards. New numerical box simulations for the meridional cross-correlation $\langle u_θu_ϕ\rangle $, however, reveal the angular momentum transport towards the poles for slow rotation and towards the equator for fast rotation. The explanation is that for slow rotation a negative radial gradient of the angular velocity always appears, which in combination with a so-far neglected rotation-indu…
Asteroseismology with the space-borne missions CoRoT and Kepler provides a powerful mean of testing the modeling of transport processes in stars. Rotational splittings are currently measured for a large number of red giant stars and can provide stringent constraints on the rotation profiles. The aim of this paper is to obtain a theoretical framework for understanding the properties of the observed rotational splittings of red giant stars with slowly rotating cores. This allows us to establish appropriate seismic diagnostics for rotation of these evolved stars. Rotational splittings for stochas…
Only 5 Of?p stars have been identified in the Galaxy. Of these, 3 have been studied in detail, and within the past 5 years magnetic fields have been detected in each of them. The observed magnetic and spectral characteristics are indicative of organised magnetic fields, likely of fossil origin, confining their supersonic stellar winds into dense, structured magnetospheres. The systematic detection of magnetic fields in these stars strongly suggests that the Of?p stars represent a general class of magnetic O-type stars.
Rotation periods inferred from the magnetic variability of some Ap stars are incredibly long, exceeding ten years in some cases. An explanation for such slow rotation is lacking. This paper attempts to provide an explanation of the super-slow rotation of the magnetic and thermal patterns of Ap stars in terms of the longitudinal drift of the unstable disturbances of the kink-type (Tayler) instability of their internal magnetic field. The rates of drift and growth were computed for eigenmodes of Tayler instability using stellar parameters estimated from a structure model of an A star. The comput…
Using simulations of slowly rotating stratified turbulence, we show that the alpha effect responsible for the generation of astrophysical magnetic fields is proportional to the logarithmic gradient of kinetic energy density rather than that of momentum, as was previously thought. This result is in agreement with a new analytic theory developed in this paper for large Reynolds numbers. Thus, the contribution of density stratification is less important than that of turbulent velocity. The alpha effect and other turbulent transport coefficients are determined by means of the test-field method. In…
We present our analysis of 6 years of ESPaDOnS spectropolarimetry of the magnetic $β$ Cep star $ξ^1$ CMa (B0.7 IV). This high-precision magnetometry is consistent with a rotational period $P{\rm rot} >$ 40 yr. Absorption line profiles can be reproduced with a non-rotating model. We constrain $R_*$, $L_*$, and the stellar age via a Baade-Wesselink analysis. Spindown due to angular momentum loss via the magnetosphere predicts an extremely long rotational period if the magnetic dipole $B_{\rm d} > 6$ kG, a strength also inferred by the best-fit sinusoids to the longitudinal magnetic field measure…
A general formalism to find the density profile of a slowly rotating stellar object in modified gravity is presented. We derive a generic Lane-Emden equation and its analytical solution for a wide class of modified theories of gravity.
We study the dipolar magnetic field configuration and present solutions of Maxwell equations in the internal background spacetime of a a slowly rotating gravastar. The shell of gravastar where magnetic field penetrated is modeled as sphere consisting of perfect highly magnetized fluid with infinite conductivity. Dipolar magnetic field of the gravastar is produced by a circular current loop symmetrically placed at radius $a$ at the equatorial plane.
We study Maxwell equations in the external background spacetime of a slowly rotating magnetized NUT star and find analytical solutions for the exterior electric fields after separating the equations of electric field into angular and radial parts in the lowest order approximation. The star is considered isolated and in vacuum, with dipolar magnetic field aligned with the axis of rotation. The contribution to the external electric field of star from the NUT charge is considered in detail.
We study the structure of electromagnetic field of slowly rotating magnetized star in a Randall-Sundrum II type braneworld. The star is modeled as a sphere consisting of perfect highly magnetized fluid with infinite conductivity and frozen-in dipolar magnetic field. Maxwell's equations for the external magnetic field of the star in the braneworld are analytically solved in approximation of small distance from the surface of the star. We have also found numerical solution for the electric field outside the rotating magnetized neutron star in the braneworld in dependence on brane tension. The in…
Buoyancy-driven convection is likely the dominant driver of turbulent motions in the universe, and thus, is widely studied by physicists, engineers, geophysicists and astrophysicists. Maybe unsurprisingly, these different communities discuss the gross convective behaviors in different ways, often without significant cross-talk existing between them. Here, we seek to draw connections between these communities. We do so by carrying out a set of basic scale estimations for how heat and fluid momentum transport should behave in non-rotating, slowly rotating and rapidly rotating buoyancy-driven con…
We study isotropic and slowly-rotating stars made of dark energy adopting the extended Chaplygin equation-of-state. We compute the moment of inertia as a function of the mass of the stars, both for rotating and non-rotating objects. The solution for the non-diagonal metric component as a function of the radial coordinate for three different star masses is shown as well. We find that i) the moment of inertia increases with the mass of the star, ii) in the case of non-rotating objects the moment of inertia grows faster, and iii) the curve corresponding to rotation lies below the one correspondin…
Simulations of magnetohydrodynamics convection in slowly rotating stars predict anti-solar differential rotation (DR) in which the equator rotates slower than poles. This anti-solar DR in the usual $αΩ$ dynamo model does not produce polarity reversal. Thus, the features of large-scale magnetic fields in slowly rotating stars are expected to be different than stars having solar-like DR. In this study, we perform mean-field kinematic dynamo modelling of different stars at different rotation periods. We consider anti-solar DR for the stars having rotation period larger than 30~days and solar-like…
