We study the structure of electromagnetic field of slowly rotating magnetized star in a Randall-Sundrum II type braneworld. The star is modeled as a sphere consisting of perfect highly magnetized fluid with infinite conductivity and frozen-in dipolar magnetic field. Maxwell's equations for the external magnetic field of the star in the braneworld are analytically solved in approximation of small distance from the surface of the star. We have also found numerical solution for the electric field outside the rotating magnetized neutron star in the braneworld in dependence on brane tension. The influence of brane tension on the electromagnetic energy losses of the rotating magnetized star is underlined. Obtained "brane" corrections are shown to be relevant and have non-negligible values. In comparison with astrophysical observations on pulsars spindown data they may provide an evidence for the brane tension and, thus, serve as a test for the braneworld model of the Universe.
We investigate the motion of a magnetized particle orbiting around a black hole in braneworld placed in asymptotically uniform magnetic field. The influence of brane parameter on effective potential of the radial motion of magnetized spinning particle around the braneworld black hole using Hamilton-Jacobi formalism is studied. It is found that circular orbits for photons and slowly moving particles may become stable near $r = 3M$. It was argued that the radii of the innermost stable circular orbits are sensitive on the change of brane parameter. Similar discussion without Weil parameter has be…
Capture cross section of magnetized particle (with nonzero magnetic moment) by braneworld black hole in uniform magnetic field is considered. The magnetic moment of particle was chosen as it was done by \citet{rs99} and for the simplicity particle with zero electric charge is chosen. It is shown that the spin of particle as well as the brane parameter are to sustain the stability of particles circularly orbiting around the black hole in braneworld i.e. spin of particles and brane parameter try to prevent the capture by black hole.
We study the dipolar magnetic field configuration and present solutions of Maxwell equations in the internal background spacetime of a a slowly rotating gravastar. The shell of gravastar where magnetic field penetrated is modeled as sphere consisting of perfect highly magnetized fluid with infinite conductivity. Dipolar magnetic field of the gravastar is produced by a circular current loop symmetrically placed at radius $a$ at the equatorial plane.
We study Maxwell equations in the external background spacetime of a slowly rotating magnetized NUT star and find analytical solutions for the exterior electric fields after separating the equations of electric field into angular and radial parts in the lowest order approximation. The star is considered isolated and in vacuum, with dipolar magnetic field aligned with the axis of rotation. The contribution to the external electric field of star from the NUT charge is considered in detail.
Analytical solutions of Maxwell equations in background spacetime of black hole in braneworld immersed in external uniform magnetic field have been found. Influence of both magnetic and brane parameters on effective potential of the radial motion of charged test particle around slowly rotating black hole in braneworld immersed in uniform magnetic field has been investigated by using Hamilton-Jacobi method. Exact analytical solution for dependence of the radius of the innermost stable circular orbits (ISCO) $r_{\rm ISCO}$ from brane parameter for motion of test particle around nonrotating isola…
We perform a study to describe motion of charged particles under the influence of electromagnetic and gravitational fields of a slowly rotating wormhole with nonvanishing magnetic moment. We present analytic expression for potentials of electromagnetic field for an axially symmetric slowly rotating magnetized wormholes. While addressing important issues regarding the subject, we compare our results of motion around black holes and wormholes in terms of the ratio of radii of event horizons of a black hole and of the throat of a wormhole. It is shown that both radial and circular motions of test…
In this Letter, we report a realistic calculation of the magnetic field profile for the equation of state inside strongly magnetized neutron stars. Unlike previous estimates, which are widely used in the literature, we find that magnetic fields increase relatively slowly with increasing baryon chemical potential (or baryon density) of magnetized matter. More precisely, the increase is polynomial instead of exponential, as previously assumed. Through the analysis of several different realistic models for the microscopic description of stellar matter (including hadronic, hybrid and quark models)…
Recently, general relations among the quadrupole moment (Q), the moment of inertia (I), and the tidal deformability (Love number) of a neutron star were shown to exist. They are nearly independent of the nuclear matter equation of state and would be of great aid in extracting parameters from observed gravitational-waves and in testing general relativity. These relations, however, do not account for strong magnetic fields. We consider this problem by studying the effect of a strong magnetic field on slowly rotating relativistic neutron stars and show that, for simple magnetic field configuratio…
Many types of stars have strong magnetic fields that can dynamically influence the flow of circumstellar matter. In stars with accretion disks, the stellar magnetic field can truncate the inner disk and determine the paths that matter can take to flow onto the star. These paths are different in stars with different magnetospheres and periods of rotation. External field lines of the magnetosphere may inflate and produce favorable conditions for outflows from the disk-magnetosphere boundary. Outflows can be particularly strong in the propeller regime, wherein a star rotates more rapidly than the…
Strongly magnetized accreting stars are often hypothesized to be in `spin equilibrium' with their surrounding accretion flows, which requires that the accretion rate changes more slowly than it takes the star to reach spin equilibrium. This is not true for most magnetically accreting stars, which have strongly variable accretion outbursts on time-scales much shorter than the time it would take to reach spin equilibrium. This paper examines how accretion outbursts affect the time a star takes to reach spin equilibrium and its final equilibrium spin period. I consider several different models fo…
Axisymmetric MHD simulations are used to investigate the Bondi-Hoyle accretion onto an isolated magnetized neutron star moving supersonically (with Mach number of 3) through the interstellar medium. The star is assumed to have a dipole magnetic field aligned with its motion and a magnetospheric radius R_m less then the accretion radius R_BH, so that the gravitational focusing is important. We find that the accretion rate to a magnetized star is smaller than that to a non-magnetized star for the parameters considered. Close to the star the accreting matter falls to the star's surface along the …
Huge electromagnetic fields are known to be present during the late stages of the dynamics of supernovae. Thus, when dealing with electrodynamics in this context, the possibility may arise to probe nonlinear theories (generalizations of the Maxwellian electromagnetism). We firstly solve Einstein field equations minimally coupled to an arbitrary (current-free) nonlinear Lagrangian of electrodynamics (NLED) in the slow rotation regime $a\ll M$ (black hole's mass), up to first order in $a/M$. We then make use of the robust and self-contained Born-Infeld Lagrangian in order to compare and contrast…
We present the first results of a global axisymmetric simulation of accretion onto rotating magnetized stars from a turbulent, MRI-driven disk. The angular momentum is transported outward by the magnetic stress of the turbulent flow with a rate corresponding to a Shakura-Sunyaev viscosity parameter alpha\approx 0.01-0.04. The result of the disk-magnetosphere interaction depends on the orientation of the poloidal field in the disk relative to that of the star at the disk-magnetosphere boundary. If fields have the same polarity, then the magnetic flux is accumulated at the boundary and blocks th…
We derive the scaling of differential rotation in both slowly- and rapidly-rotating convection zones using order of magnitude methods. Our calculations apply across stars and fluid planets and all rotation rates, as well as to both magnetized and purely hydrodynamic systems. We find shear $|R\nablaΩ|$ of order the angular frequency $Ω$ for slowly-rotating systems with $Ω\ll |N|$, where $N$ is the \brvs\ frequency, and find that it declines as a power-law in $Ω$ for rapidly-rotating systems with $Ω\gg |N|$. We further calculate the meridional circulation rate and baroclinicity and examine the m…
We study the influence of a dynamo magnetic field on the buoyant rise and emergence of twisted magnetic flux-ropes, and their influence on the global external magnetic field. We ran 3D MHD numerical simulations using the ASH code and analysed the dynamical evolution of such buoyant flux-ropes from the bottom of the convection zone until the post-emergence phases. The global nature of this model represents very crudely and inaccurately the local dynamics of the buoyant rise, but allows to study the influence of global effects such as self-consistently generated differential rotation, meridional…
We report results of the first global three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the waves excited in an accretion disc by a rotating star with a dipole magnetic field misaligned from the star's rotation axis (which is aligned with the disc axis). The main results are the following: (1) If the magnetosphere of the star corotates approximately with the inner disc, then we observe a strong one-armed bending wave (a warp). This warp corotates with the star and has a maximum amplitude between corotation radius and the radius of the vertical resonance. The disc's center of mass can deviat…
Expanding nebulae are produced by mass loss from stars, especially during late stages of evolution. Multi-dimensional simulation of these nebulae requires high resolution near the star and permits resolution that decreases with distance from the star, ideally with adaptive timesteps. We report the implementation and testing of static mesh-refinement in the radiation-magnetohydrodynamics code PION, and document its performance for 2D and 3D calculations. The bow shock produced by a hot, magnetized, slowly rotating star as it moves through the magnetized ISM is simulated in 3D, highlighting diff…
We discuss recent progress in understanding the launching of outflows/jets from the disc-magnetosphere boundary of slowly and rapidly rotating magnetized stars. In most of the discussed models the interior of the disc is assumed to have a turbulent viscosity and magnetic diffusivity (as described by two ``alpha'' parameters), whereas the coronal region outside of the disc is treated using ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). Extensive MHD simulations have established the occurrence of long-lasting outflows in both the cases of slowly and rapidly rotating stars. In the case of {\it slowly rotating…
Stars form predominantly in clusters inside dense clumps of molecular clouds that are both turbulent and magnetized. The typical size and mass of the cluster-forming clumps are $\sim 1$ pc and $\sim 10^2 - $ 10$^3$ M$_\odot$, respectively. Here, we discuss some recent progress on numerical simulations of clustered star formation in such parsec-scale dense clumps with emphasis on the role of magnetic fields. The simulations have shown that magnetic fields tend to slow down global gravitational collapse and thus star formation, especially in the presence of protostellar outflow feedback. Even a …
Magnetorotational instability (MRI) has been suggested to lead a rapid growth of the magnetic field in core collapse supernovae and produce departures from spherical syymmetry that can be important in determining the explosion mechanism. We address the problem of stability in differentially rotating magnetized proto-neutron stars at the beginning of their evolution. Criteria for MRI in proto-neutron stars are derived without simplying assumptions about a weak magnetic field and are substantially different from the standard condition. If the magnetic field is strong, MRI can occur only in the n…

Two magnetic braking models are implemented in MESA for use in the MIST stellar model grids. Stars less than about 1.3 $M_{\odot}$ are observed to spin down over time through interaction with their magnetized stellar winds (i.e., magnetic braking). This is the basis for gyrochronology, and fundamental to the evolution of lower mass stars. The detailed physics behind magnetic braking are uncertain, as are 1D stellar evolution models. Thus, we calibrate our models and compare to data from open clusters. Each braking model tested here is capable of reproducing the data, albeit with some important…
Millisecond pulsars are rather weakly-magnetized neutron stars which are thought to have been spun up by disc accretion, with magnetic linkage between the star and the disc playing a key role. Their spin history depends sensitively on details of the magnetic field structure, but idealized models from the 1980s and 1990s are still commonly used for calculating the magnetic field components. This paper is the third in a series presenting results from a step-by-step analysis which we are making of the problem, starting with very simple models and then progressively including additional features o…
Context. Mass transfer due to Roche lobe overflow leads to the formation of an accretion disk around a weakly magnetized white dwarf (WD) in cataclysmic variables. At the inner edge of the disk, the gas comes upon the surface of the WD and has to get rid of its excess kinetic energy in order to settle down on the more slowly rotating outer stellar layers. This region is known as the boundary layer (BL). Aims. In this work we investigate the vertical structure of the BL, which is still poorly understood. We shall provide details of the basic structure of the two-dimensional (2D) BL and how it d…
