The conformity effect, indicating the evolution of a galaxy is related to its surrounding neighbour galaxies as far as a few Mpc, is an interesting phenomenon in the modeling of galaxy and evolution. Here we study the conformity effect of HI galaxies in a matched galaxy sample between SDSS DR7 and ALFALFA surveys. By checking the probability difference for the detected HI galaxies as a function of distance around a normal or an HI galaxy, we find that this effect is significant out to 5 Mpc. It also shows a dependence on the stellar mass of galaxies, with the strength the strongest in the stellar mass range of 10^10~10^10.5. However, when the sample is confined to central galaxies in groups with virial radii smaller than 1 Mpc, the 1-halo conformity signal is still evident, while the 2-halo conformity signal is reduced to a very weak amplitude. Our results confirm the previous study in the optical band that the 2-halo term is possibly caused by the bias effect in the sample selection. Furthermore, we confirm the existence of the 1-halo conformity discovered in the optical and radio band in previous lectures. Our results provide another viewpoint of the conformity effect and hope to shed the light on the co-evolution of the galaxies and their neighbours in the current galaxy formation models.
We present an HI-optical catalog of ~ 30,000 galaxies based on the 100% complete Arecibo Legacy Fast Arecibo L-band Feed Array (ALFALFA) survey combined with data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Our goal is to facilitate public use of the completed ALFALFA catalog by providing carefully determined matches to SDSS counterparts, including matches for ~ 12,000 galaxies that do not have SDSS spectra. These identifications can provide a basis for further cross-matching with other surveys using SDSS photometric IDs as a reference point. We derive absolute magnitudes and stellar masses for …
We measure the r-band galaxy luminosity function (LF) across environments over the redshift range 0<$z$<0.107 using the SDSS. We divide our sample into galaxies residing in large scale voids (void galaxies) and those residing in denser regions (wall galaxies). The best fitting Schechter parameters for void galaxies are: log$Φ^*$= -3.40$\pm$0.03 log(Mpc$^{-3}$), $M^*$= -19.88$\pm$0.05, and $α$=-1.20$\pm$0.02. For wall galaxies, the best fitting parameters are: log$Φ^*$=-2.86$\pm$0.02 log(Mpc$^{-3}$), $M^*$=-20.80$\pm$0.03, and $α$=-1.16$\pm$0.01. We find a shift in the characteristic magnitude,…
We search for environmental dependence of the HI mass function in the ALFALFA 70% catalogue. The catalogue is split into quartiles of environment density based on the projected neighbour density of neighbours found in both SDSS and 2MRS volume limited reference catalogues. We find the Schechter function 'knee' mass to be dependent on environment, with the value of $\log ({M_{*}/\mathrm{M_{\odot}}})$ shifting from $9.81 \pm 0.02$ to $10.00 \pm 0.03$ between the lowest and highest density quartiles. However, this dependence was only observed when defining environment based on the SDSS reference …
The application of artificial neural networks (ANNs) for the estimation of HI gas mass fraction (\fgas) is investigated, based on a sample of 13,674 galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) with HI detections or upper limits from the Arecibo Legacy Fast Arecibo L-band Feed Array (ALFALFA). We show that, for an example set of fixed input parameters ($g-r$ colour and $i$-band surface brightness), a multidimensional quadratic model yields \fgas\ scaling relations with a smaller scatter (0.22 dex) than traditional linear fits (0.32 dex), demonstrating that non-linear methods can lead to an …
The population of Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies is crucial for understanding the extremes of galaxy formation and evolution of the universe. As LSB galaxies are mostly rich in gas (HI), the alpha.40-SDSS DR7 sample is absolutely one of the best survey combinations to select a sample of them in the local Universe. Since the sky backgrounds are systematically overestimated for galaxy images by the SDSS photometric pipeline, particularly for luminous galaxies or galaxies with extended low surface brightness outskirts, in this paper, we above all estimated the sky backgrounds of SDSS image…
Galactic conformity is the phenomenon whereby galaxy properties exhibit excess correlations across distance than that expected if these properties only depended on halo mass. We perform a comprehensive study of conformity at low redshift using a galaxy group catalogue from the SDSS DR7 spectroscopic sample. We study correlations both between central galaxies and their satellites (1-halo), and between central galaxies in separate haloes (2-halo). We use the quenched fractions and the marked correlation function (MCF), to probe for conformity in three galaxy properties, $(g-r)$ colour, specific …
The neutral hydrogen~(HI) gas is an important barometer of recent star formation and metal enrichment activities in galaxies. I develop a novel statistical method for predicting the HI-to-stellar mass ratio $f_{gas}$ of galaxies from their stellar mass and optical colour, and apply it to a volume-limited galaxy sample jointly observed by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA survey. I eliminate the impact of the Malmquist bias against HI-deficient systems on the $f_{gas}$ predictor by properly accounting for the HI detection probability of each galaxy in the analysis. T…
We combine data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA Survey (ALFALFA) to study the cold atomic gas content of galaxies in groups and clusters in local universe. A careful cross-matching of galaxies in the SDSS, ALFALFA and SDSS group catalogs provides a sample of group galaxies with stellar masses $10^{8.4} M_{\odot} \le M_{*} \le 10^{10.6} M_{\odot}$ and group halo masses $10^{12.5} h^{-1} M_{\odot} \le M_h \le 10^{15.0} h^{-1} M_{\odot}$. Controlling our sample in stellar mass and redshift, we find no significant radial variation in the galaxy \hi\ gas-to…
We estimate the HI mass function (HIMF) of galaxies in groups based on thousands of ALFALFA (Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA survey) HI detections within the galaxy groups of four widely used SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey) groups catalogues. Although differences between the catalogues mean that there is no one definitive group galaxy HIMF, in general we find that the low-mass slope is flat, in agreement with studies based on small samples of individual groups, and that the 'knee' mass is slightly higher than that of the global HIMF of the full ALFALFA sample. We find that the observed fraction of AL…
We present VLA HI spectral line imaging of 5 sources discovered by ALFALFA. These targets are drawn from a larger sample of systems that were not uniquely identified with optical counterparts during ALFALFA processing, and as such have unusually high HI mass to light ratios. These candidate "Almost Dark" objects fall into 4 categories: 1) objects with nearby HI neighbors that are likely of tidal origin; 2) objects that appear to be part of a system of multiple HI sources, but which may not be tidal in origin; 3) objects isolated from nearby ALFALFA HI detections, but located near a gas-poor ea…
We re-examine the fraction of low-redshift Sloan Digital Sky Survey satellites and centrals in which star formation has been quenched, using the environment quenching efficiency formalism that separates out the dependence of stellar mass. We show that the centrals of the groups containing the satellites are responding to the environment in the same way as their satellites (at least for stellar masses above 10^10.3 Msun), and that the well-known differences between satellites and the general set of centrals arise because the latter are overwhelmingly dominated by isolated galaxies. The widespre…
Ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) are objects which have very extended morphology and faint central surface brightness. Most UDGs are discovered in galaxy clusters and groups, but also some are found in low density environments. The diffuse morphology and faint surface brightness make them difficult to distinguish from the sky background. Several previous works have suggested that at least some UDGs are consistent with exponential surface brightness profiles (Sérsic n ~ 1). The surface brightness of exponential disks is enhanced in edge-on systems, so searching for edge-on systems may be an effici…
Understanding the physical connection between cluster galaxies and massive haloes is key to mitigating systematic uncertainties in next-generation cluster cosmology. We develop a novel method to infer the level of conformity between the stellar mass of the brightest central galaxies~(BCGs) $M_*^{BCG}$ and the satellite richness $λ$, defined as their correlation coefficient $ρ_{cc}$ at fixed halo mass, using the abundance and weak lensing of SDSS clusters as functions of $M_*^{BCG}$ and $λ$. We detect a halo mass-dependent conformity as $ρ_{cc}{=}0.60{+}0.08\ln(M_h/3{\times}10^{14}M_{\odot}/h)$…
Low-surface-brightness galaxies(LSBGs) are defined as galaxies that are fainter than dark night sky and are important for studying our universe. Particularly, edge-on galaxies are useful for the study of rotational velocity and dynamical properties of galaxies. Hence here we focus on searching for edge-on LSBGs. In order to find these edge-on dim galaxies, a series of effects caused by inclination, including the surface brightness profile, internal extinction, and scale length, have been corrected. In this work, we present a catalog of 281 edge-on LSBG candidates, which are selected from the c…
We present a fully analytical halo model of colour-dependent clustering that incorporates the effects of galactic conformity in a halo occupation distribution (HOD) framework. The model, based on our previous numerical work, describes conformity through a correlation between the colour of a galaxy and the concentration of its parent halo, leading to a correlation between central and satellite galaxy colours at fixed halo mass. The strength of the correlation is set by a tunable `group quenching efficiency', and the model can separately describe group-level correlations between galaxy colour (1…
Using a sample of dwarf galaxies observed using the VIMOS IFU on the VLT, we investigate the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) as a function of star formation rate (FMR$_{\text{SFR}}$) as well as HI-gas mass (FMR$_{\text{HI}}$). We combine our IFU data with a subsample of galaxies from the ALFALFA HI survey crossmatched to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to study the FMR$_{\text{SFR}}$ and FMR$_{\text{HI}}$ across the stellar mass range 10$^{6.6}$ to 10$^{8.8}$ M$_\odot$, with metallicities as low as 12+log(O/H) = 7.67. We find the 1$σ$ mean scatter in the MZR to be 0.05 dex. The 1$σ$ mean scatter …
We use a volume-limited galaxy sample from the SDSS Data Release 7 to explore the dependence of galactic conformity on the large-scale environment, measured on $\sim$ 4 Mpc scales. We find that the star formation activity of neighbour galaxies depends more strongly on the environment than on the activity of their primary galaxies. In under-dense regions most neighbour galaxies tend to be active, while in over-dense regions neighbour galaxies are mostly passive, regardless of the activity of their primary galaxies. At a given stellar mass, passive primary galaxies reside in higher density regio…
We present the observed H$α$ flux and derived star formation rates (SFRs) for a fall sample of low$-$surface$-$brightness galaxies (LSBGs). The sample is selected from the fall sky region of the 40$\%$ ALFALFA {\ion{H}{1}} survey $-$ SDSS DR7 photometric data, and all the $Hα$ images were obtained using the 2.16 m telescope, operated by the National Astronomy Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences. A total of 111 LSBGs were observed and $Hα$ flux was measured in 92 of them. Though almost all the LSBGs in our sample are {\ion{H}{1}}$-$rich, their SFRs derived from the extinction and filter$…
Using the group crossing time $t_{\rm c}$ as an age indicator for galaxy groups, we have investigated the correlation between $t_{\rm c}$ and the group spiral fraction, as well as between $t_{\rm c}$ and the neutral hydrogen gas fraction of galaxy groups. Our galaxy group sample is selected from the SDSS DR7 catalog, and the group spiral fraction is derived from the Galaxy Zoo morphological data set. We found that the group spiral galaxy fraction is correlated with the group crossing time. We further cross matched the latest released ALFALFA 70\% HI source catalog with the SDSS group catalog a…
We present results from deep HI and optical imaging of AGC 229101, an unusual HI source detected at v$_{\rm helio}$ = 7116 km/s in the ALFALFA survey. Initially classified as a candidate "dark" source because it lacks a clear optical counterpart in SDSS or DSS2 imaging, AGC 229101 has $10^{9.31\pm0.05}$ solar masses of HI, but an HI line width of only 43$\pm$9 km/s. Low resolution WSRT imaging and higher resolution VLA B-array imaging show that the source is significantly elongated, stretching over a projected length of ~80 kpc. The HI imaging resolves the source into two parts of roughly equa…

We investigate the small-scale conformity in color between bright galaxies and their faint companions in the Virgo cluster. Cluster member galaxies are spectroscopically determined using the Extended Virgo Cluster Catalog (EVCC) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12 (SDSS DR12). We find that the luminosity-weighted mean color of faint galaxies depends on the color of adjacent bright galaxy as well as on the cluster-scale environment (gravitational potential index). From this result for the entire area of the Virgo cluster, it is not distinguishable whether the small-scale conformity…
We employ several galaxy formation models, in particular, L-GALAXIES, IllustrisTNG, and EAGLE, as well as observational samples from SDSS and DESI, to investigate galactic conformity, the observed large-scale correlation between the star-formation properties of central (primary) galaxies and those of their neighbours. To analyse the models and observations uniformly, we introduce CENSAT, a new algorithm to define whether a galaxy is a central or a satellite system based on an isolation criterion. We find that the conformity signal is present, up to at least 5 Mpc from the centres of low- and i…
Using group catalogs from the SDSS DR7, we attempt to measure galactic conformity in the local universe. We measure the quenched fraction of neighbor galaxies around isolated primary galaxies, dividing the isolated sample into star-forming and quiescent objects. We restrict our measurements to scales $>1$ Mpc to probe the correlations between the formation histories of distinct halos. Over the stellar mass range $10^{9.7} \le M_\ast/M_\odot \le 10^{10.9}$, we find minimal statistical evidence for conformity. We further compare these data to predictions of the halo age-matching model, in which …

We combine data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA Survey (ALFALFA) to establish an empirical model for the HI gas content within dark matter halos. A cross-match between our SDSS DR7 galaxy group sample and the ALFALFA HI sources provides a catalog of 16,520 HI-galaxy pairs within 14,270 galaxy groups (halos). Using these matched pairs, we model the HI gas mass distributions within halos using two components: 1) {\it in situ} galaxy relations that involve the HI masses, colors $({\rm g-r})$ and stellar masses 2) an {\it ex situ} dependence of the HI mass…
We test for galactic conformity at $0.2<z<1.0$ to a projected distance of 5 Mpc using spectroscopic redshifts from the PRism MUlti-object Survey (PRIMUS). Our sample consists of $\sim60,000$ galaxies in five separate fields covering a total of $\sim5.5$ square degrees, which allows us to account for cosmic variance. We identify star-forming and quiescent "isolated primary" (i.e., central) galaxies using isolation criteria and cuts in specific star formation rate. We match the redshift and stellar mass distributions of these samples, to control for correlations between quiescent fraction and re…
We present a new HI mass estimator which relates the HI-to-stellar mass ratio to four galaxy properties: stellar surface mass density, color index $u-r$, stellar mass and concentration index, with the scatter of individual galaxies around the mean HI mass modeled with a Gaussian distribution. We calibrate the estimator using the xGASS sample, including both HI detection and non-detection, and constrain the model parameters through Bayesian inferences. Tests with mock catalogs demonstrate that our estimator provides unbiased HI masses for optical samples like the SDSS, thus suitable for statist…
Recent studies suggest that the quenching properties of galaxies are correlated over several mega-parsecs. The large-scale "galactic conformity" phenomenon around central galaxies has been regarded as a potential signature of "galaxy assembly bias" or "pre-heating", both of which interpret conformity as a result of direct environmental effects acting on galaxy formation. Building on the iHOD halo quenching framework developed in Zu & Mandelbaum (2015, 2016), we discover that our fiducial halo mass quenching model, without any galaxy assembly bias, can successfully explain the overall environme…
We obtained Arecibo HI line follow-up observations of 154 of the 2600 galaxies in the Nançay Interstellar Baryons Legacy Extragalactic Survey (NIBLES) sample. These observations are on average four times more sensitive than the original observations at the Nançay Radio Telescope. The main goal of this survey is to characterize the underlying HI properties of the NIBLES galaxies which were undetected or marginally detected at Nançay. Of the Nançay non-detections, 85% were either clearly or marginally detected at Arecibo, while 89% of the Nançay marginal detections were clearly detected. Based o…
Correlations between the star formation rates (SFRs) of nearby galaxies (so-called galactic conformity) have been observed for projected separations up to 4 Mpc, an effect not predicted by current semi-analytic models. We investigate correlations between the mass accretion rates (dMvir/dt) of nearby halos as a potential physical origin for this effect. We find that pairs of host halos "know about" each others' assembly histories even when their present-day separation is greater than thirty times the virial radius of either halo. These distances are far too large for direct interaction between …

A galaxy's morphological features encode details about its gas content, star formation history, and feedback processes, which play important roles in regulating its growth and evolution. We use deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to learn a galaxy's optical morphological information in order to estimate its neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) content directly from SDSS $gri$ image cutouts. We are able to accurately predict a galaxy's logarithmic HI mass fraction, $\mathcal{M} \equiv \log(M_{\rm HI}/M_\star)$, by training a CNN on galaxies in the ALFALFA 40% sample. Using pattern recognition (PR…
The feedback from an active galactic nucleus (AGN) is frequently invoked as a mechanism through which gas can be heated or removed from a galaxy. However, gas fraction measurements in AGN hosts have yielded mixed support for this scenario. Here, we re-visit the assessment of fgas (=MHI/M*) in z<0.05 AGN hosts in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) using two complementary techniques. First, we investigate fgas for 75 AGN host galaxies in the extended GALEX Arecibo SDSS Survey (xGASS), whose atomic gas fractions are complete to a few percent. Second, we construct HI spectral stacks of 1562 AGN f…
We investigate the origin of the type III (up-bending) discs based on a sample of 1808 galaxies from SDSS and a sub-sample of 286 galaxies with HI data from ALFALFA. We examine how the type III fraction f3, the fraction of disc galaxies which host up-bending disc breaks, depends on other galactic properties. We confirm that f3 strongly depends on the stellar concentration of galaxies. We find that HI-rich galaxies with low spins tend to have significantly more type III disc breaks than control galaxies, which are matched in concentration and stellar mass. This trend is independent of the exist…
We analyze a sample of galaxies with stellar masses greater than $10^{10} M_{\odot}$ and with redshifts in the range $0.025<z<0.05$ for which HI mass measurements are available from the GALEX Arecibo SDSS Survey (GASS) or from the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA survey (ALFALFA). At a given value of $M_*$, our sample consists primarily of galaxies that are more HI-rich than average. We constructed a series of three control samples for comparison with these HI-rich galaxies. As expected, HI-rich galaxies differ strongly from galaxies of same stellar mass that are selected without regard to HI content.…
We present the HI-MaNGA programme of HI follow-up for the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey. MaNGA, which is part of the Fourth phase of the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys (SDSS-IV), is in the process of obtaining integral field unit (IFU) spectroscopy for a sample of ~10,000 nearby galaxies. We give an overview of the HI 21cm radio follow-up observing plans and progress and present data for the first 331 galaxies observed in the 2016 observing season at the Robert C. Bryd Green Bank Telescope (GBT). We also provide a cross match of the current MaNGA (DR15) sample w…
We measure the star formation properties of two large samples of galaxies from the SDSS in large-scale cosmic voids on time scales of 10 Myr and 100 Myr, using H$α$ emission line strengths and GALEX FUV fluxes, respectively. The first sample consists of 109,818 optically selected galaxies. We find that void galaxies in this sample have higher specific star formation rates (SSFRs; star formation rates per unit stellar mass) than similar stellar mass galaxies in denser regions. The second sample is a subset of the optically selected sample containing 8070 galaxies with reliable HI detections fro…
Compact groups have high galaxy densities and low velocity dispersions, and their group members have experienced numerous and frequent interactions during their lifetimes. They provide a unique environment to study the evolution of galaxies. We examined the galaxies types and HI contents in groups to make a study on the galaxy evolution in compact groups. We used the group crossing time as an age indicator for galaxy groups. Our sample is derived from the Hickson Compact Group catalog. We obtained group morphology data from the Hyper-Leda database and the IR classification based on Wide-Field …
We build a volume-limited sample of galaxies derived from the SDSS-DR7 to characterize several physical properties of the dark matter halos where LSB galaxies reside. Using an observational proxy for the assembly time, we found that LSB galaxies assembly half of their total halo mass later than HSB ones, reinforcing the idea of them being unevolved systems. We use 5 different methods to estimate the total halo mass, finding that the total stellar-to-halo mass ratio is up to 22% lower in LSB galaxies. Finally, in order to estimate the spin parameter, we use a bulge+disk decomposition to obtain …
We use a sample of 13,511 nearby galaxies from the ALFALFA and SDSS spectroscopic surveys to study the relation between the spatial distribution of H I 21 cm emission and star formation rate (SFR). We introduce a new non-parametric quantity $K$, measured from the curve-of-growth of the line, to describe the shape of the integrated H I profile. The value of $K$ increases from double-horned to single-peaked profiles, depending on projection effects and the spatial and velocity distribution of the gas. Using carefully chosen samples to control for the competing factors that influence the integrat…
We select a volume-limited sample of galaxies derived from the SDSS-DR7 to study the environment of low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies at different scales, as well as several physical properties of the dark matter haloes where the LSB galaxies of the sample are embedded. To characterize the environment we make use of a number of publicly available value-added galaxy catalogues. We find a slight preference for LSB galaxies to be found in filaments instead of clusters, with their mean distance to the nearest filament typically larger than for high surface brightness (HSB) galaxies. The fracti…
We investigate the spatial extent and structure of the Pegasus dwarf irregular galaxy using deep, wide-field, multicolour CCD photometry from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and new deep HI observations. We study an area of ~0.6 square degrees centred on the Pegasus dwarf that was imaged by SDSS. Using effective filtering in colour-magnitude space we reduce the contamination by foreground Galactic field stars and increase significantly the contrast in the outer regions of the Pegasus dwarf. Our extended surface photometry, reaches down to a surface brightness magnitude mu_r~32 mag/sq.arcse…
We investigate the global neutral hydrogen (HI) content of isolated galaxies selected from the SDSS spectroscopic survey with optical evidence of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). Our sample includes galaxies with unresolved HI observations from the ALFALFA 70% data release combined with deeper HI observations of low-mass galaxies with 7.0 < log(M*) < 9.5. We examine the HI masses of this sample using the distance from the star-forming sequence on the OIII\Hb and NII\Ha Baldwin Phillips Terlevich (BPT) diagram as a measurement of AGN activity. In agreement with previous studies, we find that, for …
We present a new suite of mock galaxy catalogs mimicking the low-redshift Universe, based on an updated halo occupation distribution (HOD) model and a scaling relation between optical properties and the neutral hydrogen (HI) content of galaxies. Our algorithm is constrained by observations of the luminosity function and luminosity- and colour-dependent clustering of SDSS galaxies, as well as the HI mass function and HI-dependent clustering of massive HI-selected galaxies in the ALFALFA survey. Mock central and satellite galaxies with realistic values of $r$-band luminosity, $g-r$ and $u-r$ col…
We present 21 cm observations of a 10 $\times$ 2 degree region in the Virgo cluster, obtained as part of the Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey. 289 sources are detected over the full redshift range (-2,000 $<$ $v$$_{hel}$ $<$ + 20,000 km/s) with 95 belonging to the cluster ($v$$_{hel}$ $<$ 3,000 km/s). We combine our observations with data from the optically selected Virgo Cluster Catalogue (VCC) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Most of our detections can be clearly associated with a unique optical counterpart, and 30% of the cluster detections are new objects fainter than the VCC opti…
We study the interplay between several properties determined from Optical and a combination of Optical/Radio measurements, such as the effective Oxygen yield (y_eff), the star formation efficiency, gas metallicity, depletion time, gas fraction, and baryonic mass(M_bar), among others. We use spectroscopic data from the SDSS survey, and HI information from the ALFALFA survey to build a statistically significant sample of more than 5,000 galaxies. Furthermore, we complement our analysis with data from the GASS and COLD GASS surveys, and with a sample of star-forming galaxies from the Virgo cluste…
Modelling the distribution of neutral hydrogen (HI) in dark matter halos is important for studying galaxy evolution in the cosmological context. We use a novel approach to infer the HI-dark matter connection at the massive end ($m_{\rm HI} > 10^{9.8} M_{\odot}$) from radio HI emission surveys, using optical properties of low-redshift galaxies as an intermediary. In particular, we use a previously calibrated optical HOD describing the luminosity- and colour-dependent clustering of SDSS galaxies and describe the HI content using a statistical scaling relation between the optical properties and H…
Galactic bars can affect the evolution of galaxies by redistributing gas in galaxies, possibly contributing to the cessation of star formation. Recent works point to 'bar quenching' playing an important role in massive disk galaxies like the Milky Way. We construct the largest ever sample of gas rich and strongly barred disc galaxies with resolved HI observations making use of both the Giant Meter Radio Telescope (GMRT) and the Karl Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) to collect data. This sample, called HIRB (HI Rich Barred) galaxies, were identified with Galaxy Zoo - to find galaxies hosting a str…

The stellar and neutral hydrogen (HI) mass functions at z~0 are fundamental benchmarks for current models of galaxy evolution. A natural extension of these benchmarks is the two-dimensional distribution of galaxies in the plane spanned by stellar and HI mass, which provides a more stringent test of simulations, as it requires the HI to be located in galaxies of the correct stellar mass. Combining HI data from the ALFALFA survey, with optical data from SDSS, we find a distinct envelope in the HI-to-stellar mass distribution, corresponding to an upper limit in the HI fraction that varies monoton…
Subhalo abundance matching (SHAM) is a popular technique for assigning galaxy mass or luminosity to haloes produced in N-body simulations. The method works by matching the cumulative number functions of the galaxy and halo properties, and is therefore sensitive both to the precise definitions of those properties and to the selection criteria used to define the samples. Further dependence follows when SHAM parameters are calibrated with galaxy clustering, which is known to depend strongly on the manner in which galaxies are selected. In this paper we introduce a new parametrisation for SHAM and…
