Let $X$ be a $\mathbb Q$-Fano variety admitting a Kähler-Einstein metric. We prove that up to a finite quasi-étale cover, $X$ splits isometrically as a product of Kähler-Einstein $\mathbb Q$-Fano varieties whose tangent sheaf is stable with respect to the anticanonical polarization. This relies among other things on a very general splitting theorem for algebraically integrable foliations. We also prove that the canonical extension of $T_X$ by $\mathscr O_X$ is semistable with respect to the anticanonical polarization.
We introduce a class of almost homogeneous varieties contained in the class of spherical varieties and containing horospherical varieties as well as complete symmetric varieties. We develop K{ä}hler geometry on these varieties, with applications to canonical metrics in mind, as a generalization of the Guillemin-Abreu-Donaldson geometry of toric varieties. Namely we associate convex functions with hermitian metrics on line bundles, and express the curvature form in terms of this function, as well as the corresponding Monge-Amp{è}re volume form and scalar curvature. We then provide an expression…
Toric hyperk{ä}hler manifolds are quaternion analog of toric varieties. Bielawski pointed out that they can be glued by cotangent bundles of toric varieties. Following his idea, viewing both toric varieties and toric hyperk{ä}her manifolds as GIT quotients, we first establish geometrical criteria for the semi-stable points. Then based on these criteria, we show that the cotangent bundles of compact toric varieties in the core of toric hyperk{ä}hler manifold are sufficient to glue the desired toric hyperk{ä}hler manifold.
We prove the existence of Kahler-Einstein metrics on Q-Gorenstein smoothable, K-polystable Q-Fano varieties, and we show how these metrics behave, in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense, under Q-Gorenstein smoothings.
Let $X$ be any $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano variety and $\mathrm{Aut}(X)_0$ be the identity component of the automorphism group of $X$. Let $\mathbb{G}$ be a connected reductive subgroup of $\mathrm{Aut}(X)_0$ that contains a maximal torus of $\mathrm{Aut}(X)_0$. We prove that $X$ admits a Kähler-Einstein metric if and only if $X$ is $\mathbb{G}$-uniformly K-stable. This proves a version of Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture for arbitrary singular Fano varieties. A key new ingredient is a valuative criterion for $\mathbb{G}$-uniform K-stability.
We prove that K-polystable degenerations of Q-Fano varieties are unique. Furthermore, we show that the moduli stack of K-stable Q-Fano varieties is separated. Together with [Jia17,BL18], the latter result yields a separated Deligne-Mumford stack parametrizing all uniformly K-stable Q-Fano varieties of fixed dimension and volume. The result also implies that the automorphism group of a K-stable Q-Fano variety is finite.
We establish an algebraic approach to prove the properness of moduli spaces of K-polystable Fano varieties and reduce the problem to a conjecture on destabilizations of K-unstable Fano varieties. Specifically, we prove that if the stability threshold of every K-unstable Fano variety is computed by a divisorial valuation, then such K-moduli spaces are proper. The argument relies on studying certain optimal destabilizing test configurations and constructing a Theta-stratification on the moduli stack of Fano varieties.
We prove the Yau-Tian-Donaldson's conjecture for any $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano variety that has a log smooth resolution of singularities such that the discrepancies of all exceptional divisors are non-positive. In other words, if such a Fano variety is K-polystable, then it admits a Kähler-Einstein metric. This extends the previous result for smooth Fano varieties to this class of singular $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano varieties, which include those admitting crepant log resolutions.
Symmetric varieties are normal equivarient open embeddings of symmetric homogeneous spaces, and they are interesting examples of spherical varieties. We prove that all smooth Fano symmetric varieties with Picard number one admit Kähler-Einstein metrics by using a combinatorial criterion for K-stability of Fano spherical varieties obtained by Delcroix. For this purpose, we present their algebraic moment polytopes and compute the barycenter of each moment polytope with respect to the Duistermaat-Heckman measure.
We prove that every birationally superrigid Fano variety whose alpha invariant is greater than (resp. no smaller than) $\frac{1}{2}$ is K-stable (resp. K-semistable). We also prove that the alpha invariant of a birationally superrigid Fano variety of dimension $n$ is at least $\frac{1}{n+1}$ (under mild assumptions) and that the moduli space (if exists) of birationally superrigid Fano varieties is separated.
The notion of Berman-Gibbs stability was originally introduced by Robert Berman for $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano varieties $X$. We show that the pair $(X, -K_X)$ is K-stable (resp. K-semistable) provided that $X$ is Berman-Gibbs stable (resp. semistable).
We survey recent results on the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics on certain smoothable Fano varieties, focusing on the importance of such metrics in the construction of compact algebraic moduli spaces of K-polystable Fano varieties. Moreover, we give some applications and we discuss some natural problems which deserve future investigations.
We prove that K-polystable log Fano pairs have reductive automorphism groups. In fact, we deduce this statement by establishing more general results concerning the S-completeness and $Θ$-reductivity of the moduli of K-semistable log Fano pairs. Assuming the conjecture that K-semistability is an open condition, we prove that the Artin stack parametrizing K-semistable Fano varieties admits a separated good moduli space.
The notion of asymptotically log Fano varieties was given by Cheltsov and Rubinstein. We show that, if an asymptotically log Fano variety $(X, D)$ satisfies that $D$ is irreducible and $-K_X-D$ is big, then $X$ does not admit Kähler-Einstein edge metrics with angle $2πβ$ along $D$ for any sufficiently small positive rational number $β$. This gives an affirmative answer to a conjecture of Cheltsov and Rubinstein.
We apply a recent theorem of Li and the first author to give some criteria for the K-stability of Fano varieties in terms of anticanonical Q-divisors. First, we propose a condition in terms of certain anticanonical Q-divisors of given Fano variety, which we conjecture to be equivalent to the K-stability. We prove that it is at least sufficient condition and also relate to the Berman-Gibbs stability. We also give another algebraic proof of the K-stability of Fano varieties which satisfy Tian's alpha invariants condition.
We show that $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano varieties of fixed dimension with anti-canonical degrees and alpha-invariants bounded from below form a bounded family. As a corollary, K-semistable $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano varieties of fixed dimension with anti-canonical degrees bounded from below form a bounded family.
The interpretation, due to T. Mabuchi, of the classical Futaki invariant of Fano toric manifolds is extended to the case of the Generalized Futaki invariant, introduced by W. Ding and G. Tian, of almost Fano toric varieties. As an application it is shown that the real part of the Generalized Futaki invariant is positive for all degenerations of the Fano manifold V_{38}, obtained by intersection of the Veronese embedding of ${\bf P}^3\times{\bf P}^2 \subset {\bf P}^{11}$ with codimension-two hyperplanes.
We relate the global log canonical threshold of a variety with torus action to the global log canonical threshold of its quotient. We apply this to certain Fano varieties and use Tian's criterion to prove the existence of Kahler-Einstein metrics on them. In particular, we obtain simple examples of Fano threefolds being Kahler-Einstein but admitting deformations without Kahler-Einstein metric.
It is known that the automorphism group of a K-polystable Fano manifold is reductive. Codogni and Dervan construct a canonical filtration of the section ring, called Loewy filtration, and conjecture that the Loewy filtration destabilizes any Fano variety with non-reductive automorphism group. In this note, we give a counterexample to their conjecture.
We develop a general approach to prove K-stability of Fano varieties. The new theory is used to (a) prove the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics on all smooth Fano hypersurfaces of Fano index two, (b) to compute the stability thresholds for hypersurfaces at generalized Eckardt points and for cubic surfaces at all points, and (c) to provide a new algebraic proof of Tian's criterion for K-stability, amongst other applications.
We study a wide class of affine varieties, which we call affine Fano varieties. By analogy with birationally super-rigid Fano varieties, we define super-rigidity for affine Fano varieties, and provide many examples and non-examples of super-rigid affine Fano varieties.
Motivated by the study of Fano type varieties we define a new class of log pairs that we call asymptotically log Fano varieties and strongly asymptotically log Fano varieties. We study their properties in dimension two under an additional assumption of log smoothness, and give a complete classification of two dimensional strongly asymptotically log smooth log Fano varieties. Based on this classification we formulate an asymptotic logarithmic version of Calabi's conjecture for del Pezzo surfaces for the existence of Kähler--Einstein edge metrics in this regime. We make some initial progress tow…
We prove a more general and precise version of the Noether-Fano inequalities for birational maps between Mori fiber spaces. This is applied to give descriptions of global canonical thresholds on Fano varieties of Picard number one.
We introduce a new effective stability named "divisorial stability" for Fano manifolds which is weaker than K-stability and is stronger than slope stability along divisors. We show that we can test divisorial stability via the volume function. As a corollary, we prove that the first coordinate of the barycenter of the Okounkov body of the anticanonical divisor is not bigger than one for any Kähler-Einstein Fano manifold. In particular, for toric Fano manifolds, the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics is equivalent to divisorial semistability. Moreover, we find many non-Kähler-Einstein Fano ma…
We prove a criterion for K-stability of a $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano spherical variety with respect to equivariant special test configurations, in terms of its moment polytope and some combinatorial data associated to the open orbit. Combined with the equivariant version of the Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture for Fano manifolds proved by Datar and Székelyhidi, it yields a criterion for the existence of a Kähler-Einstein metric on a spherical Fano manifold. The results hold also for modified K-stability and existence of Kähler-Ricci solitons.
We prove the following result: if a $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano variety is uniformly K-stable, then it admits a Kähler-Einstein metric. We achieve this by modifying Berman-Boucksom-Jonsson's strategy with appropriate perturbative arguments and non-Archimedean estimates. The idea of using the perturbation is motivated by our previous paper.
We show that uniform K-stability is a Zariski open condition in Q-Gorenstein families of Q-Fano varieties. To prove this result, we consider the behavior of the stability threshold in families. The stability threshold (also known as the delta-invariant) is a recently introduced invariant that is known to detect the K-semistability and uniform K-stability of a Q-Fano variety. We show that the stability threshold is lower semicontinuous in families and provide an interpretation of the invariant in terms of the K-stability of log pairs.
We show that the anti-canonical volume of an $n$-dimensional Kähler-Einstein $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano variety is bounded from above by certain invariants of the local singularities, namely $\mathrm{lct}^n\cdot\mathrm{mult}$ for ideals and the normalized volume function for real valuations. This refines a recent result by Fujita. As an application, we get sharp volume upper bounds for Kähler-Einstein Fano varieties with quotient singularities. Based on very recent results by Li and the author, we show that a Fano manifold is K-semistable if and only if a de Fernex-Ein-Mustaţă type inequality holds on …
Varieties of Fano type are very well behaved with respect to MMP, and they are known to be rationally connected. We study the relation between classes of rationally connected varieties and varieties of Fano type. We give examples of rationally connected varieties of dimension $\geqslant 3$ which are not birationally equivalent to Fano type varieties, thereby answering the question of Cascini and Gongyo.
We give a purely algebro-geometric proof that if the alpha-invariant of a Q-Fano variety X is greater than dim X/(dim X+1), then (X,O(-K_X)) is K-stable. The key of our proof is a relation among the Seshadri constants, the alpha-invariant and K-stability. It also gives applications concerning the automorphism group.
The Chow-Mumford (CM) line bundle is a functorial line bundle on the base of any family of klt Fano varieties. It is conjectured that it yields a polarization on the moduli space of K-poly-stable klt Fano varieties. Proving ampleness of the CM line bundle boils down to showing semi-positivity/positivity statements about the CM-line bundle for families with K-semi-stable/K-polystable fibers. We prove the necessary semi-positivity statements in the K-semi-stable situation, and the necessary positivity statements in the uniform K-stable situation, including in both cases variants assuming K-stabi…
In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the orbit space of the closure of the subscheme parametrizing smooth Fano Kähler-Einstein manifolds inside an appropriate Hilbert scheme. In particular, we prove that being K-semistable is a Zariski open condition and establish the uniqueness for the Gromov-Hausdorff limit for a punctured flat family of Fano Kähler-Einstein manifolds. Based on these, we construct a proper scheme parameterizing the S-equivalent classes of $\QQ$-Gorenstein smoothable, K-semistable Fano varieties, and verify various necessary properties to guarantee that it is a good …
We give sufficient conditions for the semisimplicity of quantum cohomology of Fano varieties of Picard rank 1. We apply these techniques to prove new semisimplicity results for some Fano varieties of Picard rank 1 and large index. We also give examples of Fano varieties having a non semisimple small quantum cohomology but a semisimple big quantum cohomology.
We prove a conjecture of L.Bonavero, C. Casagrande, O. Debarre and S. Druel, on the pseudo-index of smooth Fano varieties, in the special case of horospherical varieties.
The symmetric projective varieties of rank one are all smooth and Fano by a classic result of Akhiezer. We classify the locally factorial (respectively smooth) projective symmetric $G$-varieties of rank 2 which are Fano. When $G$ is semisimple we classify also the locally factorial (respectively smooth) projective symmetric $G$-varieties of rank 2 which are only quasi-Fano. Moreover, we classify the Fano symmetric $G$-varieties of rank 3 obtainable from a wonderful variety by a sequence of blow-ups along $G$-stable varieties. Finally, we classify the Fano symmetric varieties of arbitrary rank …
Let $G$ be a connected, complex reductive Lie group and $X$ a $\mathbb Q$-Fano $G$-spherical variety. In this paper we compute the weighed non-Archimedean functionals of a $G$-equivariant normal test configurations of $X$ via combinatory data. Also we define a modified Futaki invariant with respect to the weight $g$, and give an expression in terms of intersection numbers. Finally we show the equivalence of different notations of stability and gives a stability criterion on $\mathbb Q$-Fano spherical varieties, which is also a criterion of existence of Kähler-Ricci $g$-solitons.
In this paper, we obtain a complete classification of smooth toric Fano varieties equipped with extremal contractions which contract divisors to curves for any dimension. As an application, we obtain a complete classification of smooth projective toric varieties which can be equivariantly blown-up to Fano along curves.
In this article we give the definitions of log Fano varieties and log Calabi-Yau varieties in the framework of theory of log schemes of Fontain-Illusie-Kato and give congruences of the cardinalities of rational points of them over the log points of finite fields.
We classify the polarized symplectic automorphisms of Fano varieties of smooth cubic fourfolds (equipped with the Plücker polarization) and study the fixed loci.
Generalizing the notions of reflexive polytopes and nef-partitions of Batyrev and Borisov, we propose a mirror symmetry construction for Calabi-Yau complete intersections in Fano toric varieties.
Fano varieties are 'atomic pieces' of algebraic varieties, the shapes that can be defined by polynomial equations. We describe the role of computation and database methods in the construction and classification of Fano varieties, with an emphasis on three-dimensional Fano varieties with mild singularities called Q-Fano threefolds. The classification of Q-Fano threefolds has been open for several decades, but there has been significant recent progress. These advances combine computational algebraic geometry and large-scale data analysis with new ideas that originated in theoretical physics.
We characterize building sets whose associated nonsingular projective toric varieties are Fano. Furthermore, we show that all such toric Fano varieties are obtained from smooth Fano polytopes associated to finite directed graphs.
Given a natural number $l$ and a weak Fano $n$-fold $X$ with $\operatorname{dim}\overline{φ_{-lK_X}(X)}\geq n-1$, we study the lower bound of the anti-canonical volume and the upper bound of the anti-canonical stability index. The method can also be used to give similar bounds for polarised Calabi-Yau varieties.
This is a survey paper about a selection of recent results on the geometry of a special class of Fano varieties, which are called of K3 type. The focus is mostly Hodge-theoretical, with an eye towards the multiple connections between Fano varieties of K3 type and hyperkähler geometry.
We show that the Picard rank is constant in families of Fano varieties (in arbitrary characteristic) and we moreover investigate the constancy of the index.
We prove results about 1-cycles on certain Fano varieties using techniques that rely on rational curves. Firstly, we show that Fano weighted complete intersections with index bigger than half their dimension have trivial first Griffiths group. Secondly, we prove that the first Chow group of most $2$-Fano weighted complete intersections, and of $2$-Fano conic-connected varieties in $\mathbb{P}^n$ of high enough index (with $3$ obvious exceptions), are generated by lines. Furthermore, if the Fano variety of lines is irreducible, the first Chow group is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}$.
