In this paper we prove an inverse function theorem in derived differential geometry. More concretely, we show that a morphism of curved $L_\infty$ spaces which is a quasi-isomorphism at a point has a local homotopy inverse. This theorem simultaneously generalizes the inverse function theorem for smooth manifolds and the Whitehead theorem for $L_\infty$ algebras. The main ingredients are the obstruction theory for $L_\infty$ homomorphisms (in the curved setting) and the homotopy transfer theorem for curved $L_\infty$ algebras. Both techniques work in the $A_\infty$ case as well.
In this paper, we construct a complete n-dim Riemannian manifold with positive Ricci curvature, quadratically nonnegatively curved infinity and infinite topological type. This gives a negative answer to a conjecture by Jiping Sha and Zhongmin Shen in the case of n greater than or equal to 6.
The paper sketches a recent progress and formulates several open problems in studying equivariant quasiconformal and quasisymmetric homeomorphisms in negatively curved spaces as well as geometry and topology of noncompact geometrically finite negatively curved manifolds and their boundaries at infinity having Carnot--Carathéodory structures. Especially, the most interesting are complex hyperbolic manifolds with Cauchy--Riemannian structure at infinity, which occupy a distinguished niche and whose properties make them surprisingly different from real hyperbolic ones.
In the spirit of Otal and Croke, we prove that a negatively-curved asymptotically hyperbolic surface is boundary distance rigid, where the distance between two points on the boundary at infinity is defined by a renormalized quantity.
We prove that the space of complete, finite volume, pinched negatively curved Riemannian metrics on a smooth high-dimensional manifold is either empty or it is highly non-connected, provided their behavior at infinity is similar.
In this paper we show that for a Berger metric $\hat{g}$ on $S^3$, the non-positively curved conformally compact Einstein metric on the $4$-ball $B_1(0)$ with $(S^3, [\hat{g}])$ as its conformal infinity is unique up to isometries and it is the metric constructed by Pedersen \cite{Pedersen}. In particular, since in \cite{LiQingShi}, we proved that if the Yamabe constant of the conformal infinity $Y(S^3, [\hat{g}])$ is close to that of the round sphere then any conformally compact Einstein manifold filled in must be negatively curved and simply connected, therefore if $\hat{g}$ is a Berger metr…
We study the inverse resonance problem for conformally compact manifolds which are hyperbolic outside a compact set. Our results include compactness of isoresonant metrics in dimension two and of isophasal negatively curved metrics in dimension three. In dimensions four or higher we prove topological finiteness theorems under the negative curvature assumption.
We construct radial fundamental solutions for the differential form Laplacian on negatively curved symmetric spaces. At least one of these Green's functions also yields a Biot-Savart Opearator, i.e. a right inverse of the exterior differential on closed forms with image in the kernel of the codifferential. Any Biot-Savart operator gives rise to a Gauss linking integral.
Let $X, Y$ be complete, simply connected Riemannian surfaces with pinched negative curvature $-b^2 \leq K \leq -1$. We show that if $f : \partial X \to \partial Y$ is a Moebius homeomorphism between the boundaries at infinity of $X, Y$, then $f$ extends to an isometry $F : X \to Y$. This can be viewed as a generalization of Otal's marked length spectrum rigidity theorem for closed, negatively curved surfaces, in the sense that Otal's theorem asserts that if $X, Y$ admit properly discontinuous, cocompact, free actions by groups of isometries and the boundary map $f$ is Moebius and equivariant w…
In this paper we study the evolution of almost non-negatively curved (possibly singular) three dimensional metric spaces by Ricci flow. The non-negatively curved metric spaces which we consider arise as limits of smooth Riemannian manifolds (M_i,g_i), i \in N, whose Ricci curvature is not less than -c^2(i), where c^2(i) goes to zero as i goes to infinity, and whose diameter is bounded by a constant independent of i, and whose volume is bounded from below by a positive constant independent of i. We show for such spaces, that a solution to Ricci flow exists for a short time, and that the solutio…
We study the evolution of strictly mean-convex entire graphs over $R^n$ by Inverse Mean Curvature flow. First we establish the global existence of starshaped entire graphs with superlinear growth at infinity. The main result in this work concerns the critical case of asymptotically conical entire convex graphs. In this case we show that there exists a time $ T < +\infty$, which depends on the growth at infinity of the initial data, such that the unique solution of the flow exists for all $t < T$. Moreover, as $t \to T$ the solution converges to a flat plane. Our techniques exploit the ultra-fa…
Multisymplectic geometry admits an operation that has no counterpart in symplectic geometry, namely, taking the product of two multisymplectic manifolds endowed with the wedge product of the multisymplectic forms. We show that there is an L-infinity-embedding of the L-infinity-algebra of observables of the individual factors into the observables of the product, and that homotopy moment maps for the individual factors induce a homotopy moment map for the product. As a by-product, we associate to every multisymplectic form a curved L-infinity-algebra, whose curvature is the multisymplectic form …
We prove spectral, stochastic and mean curvature estimates for complete $m$-submanifolds $φ\colon M \to N$ of $n$-manifolds with a pole $N$ in terms of the comparison isoperimetric ratio $I_{m}$ and the extrinsic radius $r_φ\leq \infty$. Our proof holds for the bounded case $r_φ< \infty$, recovering the known results, as well as for the unbounded case $r_φ=\infty$. In both cases, the fundamental ingredient in these estimates is the integrability over $(0, r_φ)$ of the inverse $I_{m}^{-1}$ of the comparison isoperimetric radius. When $r_φ=\infty$, this condition is guaranteed if $N$ is highly n…
We show that canonical Carnot-Caratheodory spherical and horospherical metrics, which are defined on the boundary at infinity of every rank one symmetric space of non-compact type, are visual, i.e., they are bilipschitz equivalent with universal bilipschitz constants to the inverse exponent of Gromov products based in the space and on the boundary at infinity respectively.
In this work we extend the ODE Maximum principle of Hamilton to non-compact hypersurfaces using the Omari-Yau maximum principle at infinity. As an application of this result, we investigate Inverse Mean Curvature Flow (IMCF) of non-compact hypersurfaces in hyperbolic space. Specifically, we look at bounded graphs over horospheres in $\mathbb{H}^{n+1}$ and show long time existence of the flow as well as asymptotic convergence to horospheres.
Let $X$ be a complete, simply connected harmonic manifold with sectional curvatures $K$ satisfying $K \leq -1$, and let $\partial X$ denote the boundary at infinity of $X$. Let $h > 0$ denote the mean curvature of horospheres in $X$, and let $ρ= h/2$. Fixing a basepoint $o \in X$, for $ξ\in \partial X$, let $B_ξ$ denote the Busemann function at $ξ$ such that $B_ξ(o) = 0$, then for $λ\in \mathbb{C}$ the function $e^{(iλ- ρ)B_ξ}$ is an eigenfunction of the Laplace-Beltrami operator with eigenvalue $-(λ^2 + ρ^2)$. For a function $f$ on $X$, we define the Fourier transform of $f$ by $$\tilde{f}(λ,…
Let $σ$ be an involution of a real semi-simple Lie group $U$, $U_0$ the subgroup fixed by $σ$, and $U/U_0$ the corresponding symmetric space. Ferus and Pedit called a submanifold $M$ of a rank $r$ symmetric space $U/U_0$ a {\it curved flat} if $T_pM$ is tangent to an $r$-dimensional flat of $U/U_0$ at $p$ for each $p\in M$. They noted that the equation for curved flats is an integrable system. Bryant used the involution $σ$ to construct an involutive exterior differential system $\ci_σ$ such that integral submanifolds of $\ci_σ$ are curved flats. Terng used $r$ first flows in the $U/U_0$-hiera…
We consider inverse curvature flows in $\Hh$ with star-shaped initial hypersurfaces and prove that the flows exist for all time, and that the leaves converge to infinity, become strongly convex exponentially fast and also more and more totally umbilic. After an appropriate rescaling the leaves converge in $C^\infty$ to a sphere.
We consider the inverse curvature flows $\dot x=F^{-p}ν$ of closed star-shaped hypersurfaces in Euclidean space in case $0<p\not=1$ and prove that the flow exists for all time and converges to infinity, if $0<p<1$, while in case $p>1$, the flow blows up in finite time, and where we assume the initial hypersurface to be strictly convex. In both cases the properly rescaled flows converge to the unit sphere.
Non-positively curved spaces admitting a cocompact isometric action of an amenable group are investigated. A classification is established under the assumption that there is no global fixed point at infinity under the full isometry group. The visual boundary is then a spherical building. When the ambient space is geodesically complete, it must be a product of flats, symmetric spaces, biregular trees and Bruhat--Tits buildings. We provide moreover a sufficient condition for a spherical building arising as the visual boundary of a proper CAT(0) space to be Moufang, and deduce that an irreducible…
