For every $k\geqslant 3$, we exhibit a simply connected $k$-nilpotent Lie group $N_k$ whose Dehn function behaves like $n^k$, while the Dehn function of its associated Carnot graded group $\mathsf{gr}(N_k)$ behaves like $n^{k+1}$. This property and its consequences allow us to reveal three new phenomena. First, since those groups have uniform lattices, this provides the first examples of pairs of finitely presented groups with bilipschitz asymptotic cones but with different Dehn functions. The second surprising feature of these groups is that for every even integer $k \geqslant 4$ the centralized Dehn function of $N_k$ behaves like $n^{k-1}$ and so has a different exponent than the Dehn function. This answers a question of Young. Finally, we turn our attention to sublinear bilipschitz equivalences (SBE). Introduced by Cornulier, these are maps between metric spaces inducing bi-Lipschitz homeomorphisms between their asymptotic cones. These can be seen as weakenings of quasiisometries where the additive error is replaced by a sublinearly growing function $v$. We show that a $v$-SBE between $N_k$ and $\mathsf{gr}(N_k)$ must satisfy $v(n)\succcurlyeq n^{1/(2k + 2)}$, strengthening the fact that those two groups are not quasiisometric. This is the first instance where an explicit lower bound is provided for a pair of SBE groups.
We prove super-quadratic lower bounds for the growth of the filling area function of a certain class of Carnot groups. This class contains groups for which it is known that their Dehn function grows no faster than $n^2\log n$. We therefore obtain the existence of (finitely generated) nilpotent groups whose Dehn functions do not have exactly polynomial growth and we thus answer a well-known question about the possible growth rate of Dehn functions of nilpotent groups.
A homogeneous nilpotent Lie group has a scaling automorphism determined by a grading of its Lie algebra. Many proofs of upper bounds for the Dehn function of such a group depend on being able to fill curves with discs compatible with this grading; the area of such discs changes predictably under the scaling automorphism. In this paper, we present combinatorial methods for finding such bounds. Using this method, we give new proofs of some results on Dehn functions of nilpotent groups, prove theorems on central powers and certain quotients of nilpotent groups, and construct the first example of …
Gromov proposed an averaged version of the Dehn function and claimed that in many cases it should be subasymptotic to the Dehn function. Using results on random walks in nilpotent groups, we confirm this claim for most nilpotent groups. In particular, if a nilpotent group satisfies the isoperimetric inequality $δ(l)<Cl^α$ for $α>2$ then it satisfies the averaged isoperimetric inequality $δ^{\text{avg}}(l)<C'l^{α/2}$. In the case of non-abelian free nilpotent groups, the bounds we give are asymptotically sharp.

The Dehn function measures the area of minimal discs that fill closed curves in a space; it is an important invariant in analysis, geometry, and geometric group theory. There are several equivalent ways to define the Dehn function, varying according to the type of disc used. In this paper, we introduce a new definition of the Dehn function and use it to prove several theorems. First, we generalize the quasi-isometry invariance of the Dehn function to a broad class of spaces. Second, we prove Hölder extension properties for spaces with quadratic Dehn function and their asymptotic cones. Finally…
We prove that Abels' group over an arbitrary nondiscrete locally compact field has a quadratic Dehn function. As applications, we exhibit connected Lie groups and polycyclic groups whose asymptotic cones have uncountable abelian fundamental group. We also obtain, from the case of finite characteristic, uncountably many non-quasi-isometric finitely generated solvable groups, as well as peculiar examples of fundamental groups of asymptotic cones.
The higher divergence of a metric space describes its isoperimetric behaviour at infinity. It is closely related to the higher-dimensional Dehn functions, but has more requirements to the fillings. We prove that these additional requirements do not have an essential impact for many nilpotent Lie groups. As a corollary, we obtain the higher divergence of the Heisenberg groups in all dimensions.
We demonstrate under appropriate finiteness conditions that a coarse embedding induces an inequality of homological Dehn functions. Applications of the main results include a characterization of what finitely presentable groups may admit a coarse embedding into a hyperbolic group of geometric dimension $2$, characterizations of finitely presentable subgroups of groups with quadratic Dehn function with geometric dimension $2$, and to coarse embeddings of nilpotent groups into other nilpotent groups of the same growth and into hyperbolic groups.
Addressing a question of Gromov, we give a rate in Pansu's theorem about the convergence in Gromov-Hausdorff metric of a finitely generated nilpotent group equipped with a left-invariant word metric scaled by a factor 1/n towards its asymptotic cone. We show that due to the possible presence of abnormal geodesics in the asymptotic cone, this rate cannot be better than n^{1/2} for general non-abelian nilpotent groups. As a corollary we also get an error term of the form vol(B(n))=cn^d + O(n^{d-2/(3r)}) for the volume of Cayley balls of a nilpotent group with nilpotency class r. We also state a …
We solve Dehn's isomorphism problem for virtually torsion-free relatively hyperbolic groups with nilpotent parabolic subgroups. We do so by reducing the isomorphism problem to three algorithmic problems in the parabolic subgroups, namely the isomorphism problem, separation of torsion (in their outer automorphism groups) by congruences, and the mixed Whitehead problem, an automorphism group orbit problem. The first step of the reduction is to compute canonical JSJ decompositions. Dehn fillings and the given solutions of the algorithmic problems in the parabolic groups are then used to decide if…
Viewing Dehn's algorithm as a rewriting system, we generalise to allow an alphabet containing letters which do not necessarily represent group elements. This extends the class of groups for which the algorithm solves the word problem to include nilpotent groups, many relatively hyperbolic groups including geometrically finite groups and fundamental groups of certain geometrically decomposable manifolds. The class has several nice closure properties. We also show that if a group has an infinite subgroup and one of exponential growth, and they commute, then it does not admit such an algorithm. W…
We bound the higher-order Dehn functions and other filling invariants of certain Carnot groups using approximation techniques. These groups include the higher-dimensional Heisenberg groups, jet groups, and central products of two-step nilpotent groups. Some consequences of this work are a construction of groups with arbitrarily large nilpotency class that have euclidean n-dimensional filling volume functions, and a proof of part of a conjecture of Gromov on the higher-order filling functions of the higher-dimensional Heisenberg groups.
We prove that any proper, geodesic metric space whose Dehn function grows asymptotically like the Euclidean one has asymptotic cones which are non-positively curved in the sense of Alexandrov, thus are ${\rm CAT}(0)$. This is new already in the setting of Riemannian manifolds and establishes in particular the borderline case of a result about the sharp isoperimetric constant which implies Gromov hyperbolicity. Our result moreover provides a large scale analog of a recent result of Lytchak and the author which characterizes proper ${\rm CAT}(0)$ in terms of the growth of the Dehn function at al…
We give a semi-direct product decomposition of the point stabilisers for the enhanced and exotic nilpotent cones. In particular, we arrive at formulas for the number of points in each orbit over a finite field. This is in accordance with a recent conjecture of Achar and Henderson.
We show that the tangent cone at the identity is not a complete quasiconformal invariant for sub-Riemannian nilpotent groups. Namely, we show that there exists a nilpotent Lie group equipped with left invariant sub-Riemannian metric that is not locally quasiconformally equivalent to its tangent cone at the identity. In particular, such spaces are not locally bi-Lipschitz homeomorphic. The result is based on the study of Carnot groups that are rigid in the sense that their only quasiconformal maps are the translations and the dilations.
In this paper the authors introduce an analog of the nilpotent cone, ${\mathcal N}$, for a classical Lie superalgebra, ${\mathfrak g}$, that generalizes the definition for the nilpotent cone for semisimple Lie algebras. For a classical simple Lie superalgebra, ${\mathfrak g}={\mathfrak g}_{\bar{0}}\oplus {\mathfrak g}_{\bar{1}}$ with $\text{Lie }G_{\bar{0}}={\mathfrak g}_{\bar{0}}$, it is shown that there are finitely many $G_{\bar{0}}$-orbits on ${\mathcal N}$. Later the authors prove that the Duflo-Serganova commuting variety, ${\mathcal X}$, is contained in ${\mathcal N}$ for any classical …
We study the speed of convergence to the asymptotic cone for Cayley graphs of nilpotent groups. Burago showed that $\{(\mathbb{Z}^d, \frac{1}{n} ρ,id)\}_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ converges to $(\mathbb{R}^d,d_{\infty},id)$ and its speed is $O(\frac{1}{n})$ in the sense of Gromov-Hausdorff distance. Later Breuillard and Le Donne gave estimates for non-abelian cases, and constructed an example whose speed of convergence is slower than $O(\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}})$. For $2$-step nilpotent groups, we show that if the Mal'cev completion is non-singular, then the speed of convergence is $O(\frac{1}{n})$ for any c…
A combing is a set of normal forms for a finitely generated group. This article investigates the language-theoretic and geometric properties of combings for nilpotent and polycyclic groups. It is shown that a finitely generated class 2 nilpotent group with cyclic commutator subgroup is real-time combable, as are also all 2 or 3-generated class 2 nilpotent groups, and groups in certain families of nilpotent groups, e.g. the finitely generated Heisenberg groups, groups of unipotent matrices over the integers and the free class 2 nilpotent groups. Further it is shown that any polycyclic-by-finite…
We define algebraic group analogues of the Slodowy transversal slices to adjoint orbits in a complex semisimple Lie algebra g. The new slices are transversal to the conjugacy classes in an algebraic group G with Lie algebra g. These slices are associated to (the conjugacy classes of) elements s of the Weyl group W of g. For such slices we prove an analogue of the Kostant cross-section theorem for the action of a unipotent group.
We show how a recent result of Hrushovsky implies that if an asymptotic cone of a finitely generated group is locally compact, then the group is virtually nilpotent.
We introduce cone bilipschitz equivalences between metric spaces. These are maps, more general than quasi-isometries, that induce a bilipschitz homeomorphism between asymptotic cones. Non-trivial examples appear in the context of Lie groups, and we thus prove that the study of asymptotic cones of connected Lie groups can be reduced to that of solvable Lie groups of a special form. We also focus on asymptotic cones of nilpotent groups.
We give a new obstruction to translation-like actions on nilpotent groups. Suppose we are given two finitely generated torsion free nilpotent groups with the same degree of polynomial growth, but non-isomorphic Carnot completions (asymptotic cones). We show that there exists no injective Lipschitz function from one group to the other. It follows that neither group can act translation-like on the other.
Using methods from nonstandard analysis, we will discuss which metric spaces can be realized as asymptotic cones. Applying the results we will find in the context of groups, we will prove that a group with "a few" separable asymptotic cones is virtually nilpotent, and we will classify the real trees appearing as asymptotic cones of (not necessarily hyperbolic) groups.
We prove that the subgroup zeta function and the normal zeta function of a finitely generated virtually nilpotent group are finite sums of Euler products of cone integrals over $\mathbb{Q}$ and we deduce from this that they have rational abscissa of convergence and some meromorphic continuation. We also define Mal'cev completions of a finitely generated virtually nilpotent group and we prove that the subgroup growth and the normal subgroup growth of the latter are invariants of its $\mathbb{Q}$-Mal'cev completion.
We prove an analog for integrable measurable cocycles of Pansu's differentiation theorem for Lipschitz maps between Carnot-Carathéodory spaces. This yields an alternative, ergodic theoretic proof of Pansu's quasi-isometric rigidity theorem for nilpotent groups, answers a question of Tim Austin regarding integrable measure equivalence between nilpotent groups, and gives an independent proof and strengthening of Austin's result that integrable measure equivalent nilpotent groups have bi-Lipschitz asymptotic cones. Our main tools are a nilpotent-valued cocycle ergodic theorem and a Poincaré recur…
Let Gamma be a finitely generated nilpotent group. We consider three closely related problems: (i) the asymptotic cone for an equivariant ergodic family of inner metrics on Gamma, generalizing Pansu's theorem; (ii) the limit shapes for First Passage Percolation for general (not necessarily independent) ergodic processes on edges of a Cayley graph of Gamma; (iii) a sub-additive ergodic theorem over a general ergodic Gamma-action. The limiting objects are given in terms of a Carnot-Caratheodory metric on the graded nilpotent group associated to the Mal'cev completion of Gamma.
We extend Leth's notion of subsets of the integers satisfying the Standard interval measure (SIM) property to the class of virtually nilpotent groups and name the corresponding property the Standard ball measure (SBM) property. In order to do this, we define a natural measure on closed balls in asymptotic cones associated to such groups and show that this measure satisfies the Lebesgue density theorem. We then prove analogs of various properties known to hold for SIM sets in this broader context, occasionally assuming extra properties of the group, such as the small spheres property and the sm…
We prove that if a quasi-isometry of warped cones is induced by a map between the base spaces of the cones, the actions must be conjugate by this map. The converse is false in general, conjugacy of actions is not sufficient for quasi-isometry of the respective warped cones. For a general quasi-isometry of warped cones, using the asymptotically faithful covering constructed in a previous work with Jianchao Wu, we deduce that the two groups are quasi-isometric after taking Cartesian products with suitable powers of the integers. Secondly, we characterise geometric properties of a group (coarse e…
Filling functions are asymptotic invariants of finitely presentable groups; the seminal work on the subject is by M.Gromov. They record features of combinatorial homotopy discs (van Kampen diagrams) filling loops in Cayley 2-complexes. Examples are the Dehn (or isoperimetric) function, the filling length function and the intrinsic diameter (or isodiametric) function. We discuss filling functions from geometric, combinatorial and computational points of view, we survey their interrelationships, and we sketch their roles in the studies of nilpotent groups, hyperbolic groups and asymptotic cones.…
