An integrated photonic platform is proposed for strong interactions between atomic beams and annealing-free high-quality-factor (Q) microresonators. We fabricated a thin-film, air-clad SiN microresonator with a loaded Q of $1.55\times10^6$ around the optical transition of $^{87}$Rb at $~780$ nm. This Q is achieved without annealing the devices at high temperatures, enabling future fully integrated platforms containing optoelectronic circuitry as well. The estimated single-photon Rabi frequency (2g) is ${2\boldsymbolπ}\times$64 MHz at a height of 100 nm above the resonator. Our simulation result indicates that miniature atomic beams with a longitudinal speed of 0.2 m/s to 30 m/s will strongly interact with our resonator, allowing for the detection of single-atom transits and the realization of scalable single-atom photonic devices. Racetrack resonators with a similar Q can be used to detect thermal atomic beams with velocities around 300 m/s.
GaAs disk resonators (typical disk size 5 \mum * 200 nm in our work) are good candidates for boosting optomechanical coupling thanks to their ability to confine both optical and mechanical energy in a sub-micron interaction volume. We present results of optomechanical characterization of GaAs disks by near-field optical coupling from a tapered silica nano-waveguide. Whispering gallery modes with optical Q factor up to a few 10^5 are observed. Critical coupling, optical resonance doublet splitting and mode identification are discussed. We eventually show an optomechanical phenomenon of optical …
We demonstrate a miniature self-injection locked DFB laser using resonant optical feedback from a high-Q crystalline whispering gallery mode resonator. The linewidth reduction factor is greater than 10,000, with resultant instantaneous linewidth less than 200 Hz. The minimal value of the Allan deviation for the laser frequency stability is 3x10^(-12) at the integration time of 20 us. The laser possesses excellent spectral purity and good long term stability.
Miniature concave hollows, made by wet etching silicon through a circular mask, can be used as mirror substrates for building optical micro-cavities on a chip. In this paper we investigate how ICP polishing improves both shape and roughness of the mirror substrates. We characterise the evolution of the surfaces during the ICP polishing using white-light optical profilometry and atomic force microscopy. A surface roughness of 1 nm is reached, which reduces to 0.5 nm after coating with a high reflectivity dielectric. With such smooth mirrors, the optical cavity finesse is now limited by the shap…
It is shown theoretically that an optical bottle resonator with a nanoscale radius variation can perform a multi-nanosecond long dispersionless delay of light in a nanometer-order bandwidth with minimal losses. Experimentally, a 3 mm long resonator with a 2.8 nm deep semi-parabolic radius variation is fabricated from a 19 micron radius silica fiber with a sub-angstrom precision. In excellent agreement with theory, the resonator exhibits the impedance-matched 2.58 ns (3 bytes) delay of 100 ps pulses with 0.44 dB/ns intrinsic loss. This is a miniature slow light delay line with the record large …
We report high efficiency, miniaturized, ultra-fast coherent beam combining with 3D printed micro-optics directly on the tip of a multicore fiber bundle. We present high quality factor optical nanoresonators operating in the mid-IR to far-IR based on phonon polaritons in van der Waals materials. The nanoresonators are disks patterned from isotopically pure hexagonal boron nitride (isotopes 10B and 11B) and α-molybdenum trioxide. We experimentally achieved quality factors of nearly 400, the highest ever observed in nano-resonators at these wavelengths. The excited modes are deeply subwavelength, and the resonators are 10 to 30 times smaller than the exciting wavelength. These results are very promising for the realization of nano-photonics devic…
Photoacoustic microscopy (PAM) is a promising imaging modality because it is able to reveal optical absorption contrast in high resolution on the order of a micrometer. It can be applied in an endoscopic approach by implementing PAM into a miniature probe, termed as photoacoustic endoscopy (PAE). Here we develop a miniature focus-adjustable PAE (FA-PAE) probe characterized by both high resolution (in micrometers) and large depth of focus (DOF) via a novel optomechanical design for focus adjustment. To realize high resolution and large DOF in a miniature probe, a 2-mm plano-convex lens is speci…
Miniature fluorescence microscopes are a standard tool in systems biology. However, widefield miniature microscopes capture only 2D information, and modifications that enable 3D capabilities increase the size and weight and have poor resolution outside a narrow depth range. Here, we achieve the 3D capability by replacing the tube lens of a conventional 2D Miniscope with an optimized multifocal phase mask at the objective's aperture stop. Placing the phase mask at the aperture stop significantly reduces the size of the device, and varying the focal lengths enables a uniform resolution across a …
Modern interfacial science is increasingly multi-disciplinary. Unique insight into interfacial interactions requires new multimodal techniques for interrogating surfaces with simultaneous complementary physical and chemical measurements. We describe here the design and testing of a microscope that incorporates a miniature Surface Forces Apparatus (μSFA) in sphere vs. flat mode for force-distance measurements, while simultaneously acquiring Raman spectra of the confined zone. The microscope uses a simple optical setup that isolates independent optical paths for (i) the illumination and imaging …
We propose a protection scheme of a superconducting microwave resonator to realize a hybrid quantum system, where cold neutral atoms are coupled with a single microwave photon through magnetic dipole interaction at an interface inductor. The evanescent field atom trap such as a waveguide/nanofiber atom trap, brings both surface-scattered photons and absorption-induced broadband blackbody radiation which result in quasiparticles and a low quality factor at the resonator. A proposed multiband protection layer consists of pairs of two dielectric layers and a thin nanogrid conductive dielectric la…
Gallium Arsenide and related compound semiconductors lie at the heart of optoelectronics and integrated laser technologies. Shaped at the micro and nano-scale, they allow strong interaction with quantum dots and quantum wells, and promise to result in stunning devices. However gallium arsenide optical structures presently exhibit lower performances than their silicon-based counterparts, notably in nanophotonics where the surface plays a chief role. Here we report on advanced surface control of miniature gallium arsenide optical resonators, using two distinct techniques that produce permanent r…
Fluorescence imaging is indispensable to biology and neuroscience. The need for large-scale imaging in freely behaving animals has further driven the development in miniaturized microscopes (miniscopes). However, conventional microscopes / miniscopes are inherently constrained by their limited space-bandwidth-product, shallow depth-of-field, and the inability to resolve 3D distributed emitters. Here, we present a Computational Miniature Mesoscope (CM$^2$) that overcomes these bottlenecks and enables single-shot 3D imaging across an 8 $\times$ 7-mm$^2$ field-of-view and 2.5-mm depth-of-field, a…
A photonic force microscope comprises of an optically trapped micro-probe and a position detection system to track the motion of the probe. Signal collection for motion detection is often carried out using the backscattered light off the probe - however, this mode has problems of low S/N due to the small back-scattering cross-sections of the micro-probes typically used. The position sensors often used in these cases are quadrant photodetectors. To ensure maximum sensitivity of such detectors, it would help if the detector size matched with the detection beam radius after the condenser lens (wh…
Vibrating nano- and micromechanical resonators have been the subject of research aiming at ultrasensitive mass sensors for mass spectrometry, chemical analysis and biomedical diagnosis. Unfortunately, their merits diminish dramatically in liquids due to dissipative mechanisms like viscosity and acoustic losses. A push towards faster and lighter miniaturized nanodevices would enable improved performances, provided dissipation was controlled and novel techniques were available to efficiently drive and read-out their minute displacement. Here we report on a nano-optomechanical approach to this pr…
Optical metasurfaces are two-dimensional arrays of nano-scatterers that modify optical wavefronts at subwavelength spatial resolution. The terahertz (THz) spectral domain offers a myriad of applications spanning chemical spectroscopy, medicine, security and imaging[1]. It has also recently become a playground for fundamental studies of light-matter interactions [2-6]. THz science and technology could benefit from optomechanical approaches, which harness the interaction of light with miniature mechanical resonators [7,8]. So far, optomechanics has mostly focused on the optical and microwave domains, leading to new types of quantum experiments [9-11] and to the development of optical-microwave converters [12-14]. Cavity optomechanical systems can be used for sensitive detection of mechanical motion and to control mechanical resonators, down to the quantum level. The strength with which optical and mechanical degrees of freedom interact is defined by the photon-phonon coupling rate $g_0$, which is especially large in nanoscale systems. Here, we demonstrate an optomechanical system based on a sliced photonic crystal nanobeam, that combines subwavelength optical confinement with a low-mass mechanical mode. Analyzing the transduction of motion and effects of radiation pressure we find a coupling rate $g_0$…
Dynamic light scattering techniques are routinely used for numerous industrial and research applications, because they can give access to the motion spectrum of micro- and nano-objects, and therefore to particle sizes or visco-elastic properties. However, measurements are impossible when samples do not scatterer light enough, i.e. when there are too few scattering events due to excessively small scattering cross-sections and/or low concentrations of scatterers. Here, we propose to amplify light scattering efficiency by placing weakly scattering samples inside a Lambertian cavity with high refl…
Microring resonators are critical photonic components used in filtering, sensing and nonlinear applications. To date, the development of high performance microring resonators in LNOI has been limited by the sidewall angle, roughness and etch depth of fabricated rib waveguides. We present large free spectral range microring resonators patterned via electron beam lithography in high-index contrast $Z$-cut LNOI. Our microring resonators achieve an FSR greater than 5 nm for ring radius of 30 $μ$m and a large 3 dB resonance bandwidth. We demonstrate 3 pm/V electro-optic tuning of a 70 $μ$m-radius r…
Biological lasers have attracted vast attention because of their potential medical application prospects, especially the low threshold biological laser, which can be used for ultrasensitive biological detection while ensuring that its luminous gain medium is not damaged by the high-energy pump light. By coupling the low concentration green fluorescent protein (GFP) solution with a high Q whispering gallery mode microbubble resonator, we managed to fabricate a miniature GFP laser with ultralow lasing threshold of 500 nJ/mm^2. Tapered silica fibers are often used to rapidly probe the optical properties of micro-resonators. However, their low refractive index precludes phase-matching when coupling to high-index micro-resonators, reducing efficiency. Here we demonstrate efficient optical coupling from tapered fibers to high-index micro-resonators by loading the fibers with an ancillary adiabatic waveguide-coupler fabricated via angled-etching. We demonstrate greatly enhanced coupling to a silicon multimode micro-resonator when compared to coupling via the bare fiber only. Signatures of resonator optical bistability ar…
Microdisks and microstadium resonators were fabricated on erbium doped amorphous hydrogenated silicon (a-Si:H<Er>) layers sandwiched in air and native SiO2 on Si substrates. Annealing condition is optimized to allow large emission at 1550 nm for samples with erbium concentrations as high as 1.02x10^20 atoms/cm3. Near field scanning optical microscopy shows evidences of the simultaneous presence of bow-tie and diamond scars. These modes indicate the high quality of the resonators and the potentiality for achieving amorphous silicon microcavity lasers.
We propose and demonstrate a dispersion control technique by combination of different waveguide cross sections in an aluminum nitride micro-ring resonator. Narrow and wide waveguides with normal and anomalous dispersion, respectively, are linked with tapering waveguides and enclosed in a ring resonator to produce a total dispersion near zero. The mode-coupling in multimoded waveguides is also effectively suppressed. This technique provides new degrees of freedom and enhanced flexibility in engineering the dispersion of microcomb resonators.
The wavelength selective linear absorption in communication C-band is investigated in CMOS-processed PECVD silicon nitride rings. In the overcoupled region, the linear absorption loss lowers the on-resonance transmission of a ring resonator and increases its overall quality factor. Both the linear absorption and ring quality factor are maximized near 1520 nm. The direct heating by phonon absorption leads to thermal optical bistable switching in PECVD silicon nitride based microring resonators. We calibrate the linear absorption rate in the microring resonator by measuring its transmission line…

A general model is presented for coupling of high-$Q$ whispering-gallery modes in optical microsphere resonators with coupler devices possessing discrete and continuous spectrum of propagating modes. By contrast to conventional high-Q optical cavities, in microspheres independence of high intrinsic quality-factor and controllable parameters of coupling via evanescent field offer variety of regimes earlier available in RF devices. The theory is applied to the earlier-reported data on different types of couplers to microsphere resonators and complemented by experimental demonstration of enhanced…
Lithium Niobate (LN) is an important nonlinear optical material. Here we demonstrate LN microdisk resonators that feature optical quality factor ~ 100,000, realized using robust and scalable fabrication techniques, that operate over a wide wavelength range spanning visible and near infrared. Using our resonators, and leveraging LN's large second order optical nonlinearity, we demonstrate on-chip second harmonic generation with a conversion efficiency of 0.109 W-1.
Owing to their ability to confine electromagnetic energy in ultrasmall dielectric volumes, micro-disk, ring and toroid resonators hold interest for both specific applications and fundamental investigations. Generally, contributions from various loss channels within these devices lead to limited spectral windows (Q-bands) where highest mode Q-factors manifest. Here we describe a strategy for tuning Q-bands using a new class of micro-resonators, named micro-kylix resonators, in which engineered stress within an initially flat disk results in either concave or convex devices. To shift the Q-band …

We exploit recently developed topology-optimization techniques to design complex, wavelength-scale resonators for enhancing various nonlinear $χ^{(2)}$ and $χ^{(3)}$ frequency conversion processes. In particular, we demonstrate aperiodic, multi-track ring resonators and 2D slab microcavities exhibiting long lifetimes $Q \gtrsim 10^4$, small modal volumes $V \gtrsim (λ/2n)^3$, and among the largest nonlinear overlaps (a generalization of phase matching in large-etalon waveguides) possible, paving the way for efficient, compact, and wide-bandwdith integrated nonlinear devices.
We designed an on-chip transformative optic system of a metalens-photonic crystal resonator metasystem on a foundry compatible silicon photonic platform. By adjusting the on-chip metalens' focusing length and mode dimension, the insertion loss between the metalens and the photonic crystal resonator and waveguide structures are minimized through mode-matching. The micro-system does not involve any single mode silicon nanowire waveguide, and thus mechanically robust without any oxide claddings. The proposed microsystem is ideal for miniaturized chemical and biosensors operating in air or solutio…

We present the first observation of optomechanical coupling in ultra-high Q crystalline whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) resonators. The high purity of the crystalline material enables optical quality factors in excess of 10^{10} and finesse exceeding 10^{6}. Simultaneously, mechanical quality factors greater than 10^{5} are obtained, still limited by clamping losses. Compared to previously demonstrated cylindrical resonators, the effective mass of the mechanical modes can be dramatically reduced by the fabrication of CaF2 microdisc resonators. Optical displacement monitoring at the 10^{-18} m/sq…
A $Q$-enhancement strategy for racetrack microresonators is put forward. The design is based on the modification of the resonator geometry in order to mitigate the two main sources of radiation loss in the presence of curved waveguides: the discontinuities at the junctions between straight waveguides and the bent sections, and the continuous loss at the curved waveguide sectors. At the same time, the modifications of the geometry do not affect the versatility of coupling of racetrack resonators in integrated optical circuits, which is their main advantage over ring microresonators. The proposa…
We report on the efficient design and fabrication of polymeric microracetrack optical resonators for label-free biosensing purposes. Vertically-coupled microresonators immersed in deionised water display high Q-factors (>35000) and finesses up to 25. A surface sensing experiment performed with these microresonators using 5-TAMRA cadaverine as a test molecule demonstrated both the high sensitivity and low detection limit of our device.
Optical microcavities trap light in compact volumes by the mechanisms of almost total internal reflection or distributed Bragg reflection, enable light amplification, and select out specific (resonant) frequencies of light that can be emitted or coupled into optical guides, and lower the thresholds of lasing. Such resonators have radii from 1 to 100 mkm and can be fabricated in a wide range of materials. Devices based on optical resonators are essential for cavity quantum-electro-dynamic experiments, frequency stabilization, optical filtering and switching, light generation, biosensing, and no…

Nonlinear Kerr micro-resonators have enabled fundamental breakthroughs in the understanding of dissipative solitons, as well as in their application to optical frequency comb generation. However, the conversion efficiency of the pump power into a soliton frequency comb typically remains below a few percent. We introduce a hybrid Mach-Zehnder ring resonator geometry, consisting of a micro-ring resonator embedded in an additional cavity with twice the optical path length of the ring. The resulting interferometric back coupling enables to achieve an unprecedented control of the pump depletion: pu…
The intensity buildup of light inside a lossy microring resonator can be used to enhance the generation of squeezed states via spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC). In this work, we model the generation of squeezed light in a microring resonator that is pumped with a Gaussian pulse via a side-coupled channel waveguide. We theoretically determine the optimum pump pulse duration and ring-to-channel coupling constant to minimize the quadrature noise (maximize the squeezing) in the ring for a fixed input pump energy. We derive approximate analytic expressions for the optimal coupling and p…
A liquid filled, low refractive index material inner-coated silica micro-tube has been proposed and studied as a coupled micro-resonator sensor to greatly enhance biochemical sensor sensitivity. Its unique coupling phenomenon has been analyzed and utilized to boost the refractive index sensitivity of the device to 967nm/RIU. Through optimization of the coupling strength between the two microresonators, further improvement in refractive index sensitivity up to 1100nm/RIU has been achieved. This mode coupling strategy allows us to design robust, thick-walled micro-tube sensors with ultra-high se…
We demonstrate experimentally that stable single longitudinal mode operation can be readily achieved in PT-symmetric arrangements of coupled microring resonators. Whereas any active resonator is in principle capable of displaying single-wavelength operation, selective breaking of PT-symmetry can be utilized to systematically enhance the maximum achievable gain of this mode, even if a large number of competing longitudinal or transverse resonator modes fall within the amplification bandwidth of the inhomogeneously broadened active medium. This concept is robust with respect to fabrication toler…
We encapsulated a high-quality (Q) factor optical whispering gallery mode (WGM) microtoroid resonator together with its side coupled fiber taper inside a low refractive index polymer, achieving a final Q higher than 10^7. Packaging provides stable resonator-fiber taper coupling, long-term maintenance of high-Q, a protective layer against contaminants, and portability to microtoroid resonator based devices. We tested the robustness of the packaged device under various conditions and demonstrated its capability for thermal sensing.
We report a novel geometry for OPOs based on nonlinear microcavity resonators. This approach relies on a self-locked scheme that enables OPO emission without the need for thermal locking of the pump laser to the microcavity resonance. By exploiting a CMOS-compatible microring resonator, we achieve oscillation with a complete absence of shutting down, or self-terminating behavior, a very common occurrence in externally pumped OPOs. Further, this scheme consistently produces very wide bandwidth (>300nm, limited by our experimental set-up) combs that oscillate at a spacing of the FSR of the micro…
In the context of quantum integrated photonics, this work investigates the quantum properties of light generated by silicon and silicon nitride micro-resonators pumped in pulsed regime. The developed theoretical model, performed in terms of the morphing supermodes, provides a comprehensive description of the generated quantum states. Remarkably, it shows that a full measurement of states carrying optimal squeezing levels is not accessible to standard homodyne detection, thus leaving hidden part of generated quantum features. By presenting and discussing this behaviour, as well as possible stra…

We report on fabrication of on-chip calcium fluoride (CaF2) microdisk resonators using water-assisted femtosecond laser micromachining. Focused ion beam (FIB) milling is used to create ultra-smooth sidewalls. The quality (Q)-factors of the fabricated microresonators are measured to be 4.2x10^4 at wavelengths near 1550 nm. The Q factor is mainly limited by the scattering from the bottom surface of the disk whose roughness remains high due to the femtosecond laser micromachining process. This technique facilitates formation of on-chip microresonators on various kinds of bulk crystalline material…
Electromagnetic scattering bounds on subwavelength structures play an important role in estimating performances of antennas, RFID tags, and other wireless communication devices. An appealing approach to increase a scattering cross-section is accommodating several spectrally overlapping resonances within a structure. However, numerous fundamental and practical restrictions have been found and led to the formulation of Chu-Harrington, Geyi, and other limits, which provide an upper bound to scattering efficiencies. Here we introduce a 2D array of near-field coupled split-ring resonators and optim…
We report a circuit cavity optomechanical system in which a nanomechanical resonator is adiabatically embedded inside an optical ring resonator with ultralow transition loss. The nanomechanical device forms part of the top layer of a horizontal silicon slot ring resonator, which enables dispersive coupling to the dielectric substrate via a tapered nanogap. Our measurements show nearly uncompromised optical quality factors (Q) after the release of the mechanical beam.
