Entangled photon-pairs are a critical resource in quantum communication protocols ranging from quantum key distribution to teleportation. The current workhorse technique for producing photon-pairs is via spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) in bulk nonlinear crystals. The increased prominence of quantum networks has led to growing interest in deployable high performance entangled photon-pair sources. This manuscript provides a review of the state-of-the-art for bulk-optics-based SPDC sources with continuous wave pump, and discusses some of the main considerations when building for deployment.
Entangled coherent states are shown to emerge, with high fidelity, when mixing coherent and squeezed vacuum states of light on a beam-splitter. These maximally entangled states, where photons bunch at the exit of a beamsplitter, are measured experimentally by Fock-state projections. Entanglement is examined theoretically using a Bell-type nonlocality test and compared with ideal entangled coherent states. We experimentally show nearly perfect similarity with entangled coherent states for an optimal ratio of coherent and squeezed vacuum light. In our scheme, entangled coherent states are genera…
Photonic-based qubits and integrated photonic circuits have enabled demonstrations of quantum information processing (QIP) that promises to transform the way in which we compute and communicate. To that end, sources of polarization-entangled photon pair states are an important enabling technology, especially for polarization-based protocols. However, such states are difficult to prepare in an integrated photonic circuit. Scalable semiconductor sources typically rely on nonlinear optical effects where polarization mode dispersion (PMD) degrades entanglement. Here, we directly generate polarizat…
Entangled photon pair sources based on bulk optics are approaching optimal design and implementation, with high state fidelities, spectral purities and heralding efficiencies, but generally low brightness. Integrated entanglement sources, while providing higher brightness and low-power operation, often sacrifice performance in output state quality and coupling efficiency. Here we present a polarization-entangled pair source based on a hybrid approach of waveguiding and bulk optics, addressing every metric simultaneously. We show 96% fidelity to the singlet state, 82% Hong-Ou-Mandel interferenc…
We theoretically study the transport of time-bin entangled photon pairs in a two-dimensional topological photonic system of coupled ring resonators. This system implements the integer quantum Hall model using a synthetic gauge field and exhibits topologically robust edge states. We show that the transport through edge states preserves temporal correlations of entangled photons whereas bulk transport does not preserve these correlations and can lead to significant unwanted temporal bunching or anti-bunching of photons. We study the effect of disorder on the quantum transport properties; while t…

In this paper, we analyze spontaneous parametric down conversion in a 2D slant strip type periodically poled planar waveguide and show that such a configuration has efficiencies higher than in the case of bulk crystals with the possibility of ease of collection like in channel waveguides with the additional feature of wavelength tunability. The proposed design should find applications in quantum processing using integrated quantum optics.

Presence of entangled states is explicitly shown in Topological insulator (TI) $Bi_2Te_3$. The surface and bulk state are found to have the different structures of entanglement. The surface states live as maximally entangled states in the four-dimensional subspace of total Hilbert space (spin, orbital, space). However, bulk states are entangled in the whole Hilbert space. Bulk states are found to be entangled maximally by controlled injection of electrons with momentum only along the z-direction. Scheme to detect entanglement in a 2-D model using measurement, confirming natural implementation …
We experimentally demonstrate the generation of a three-photon discrete-energy-entangled W state using multi-photon-pair generation by spontaneous four-wave mixing in an optical fiber. We show that by making use of prior information on the photon source we can verify the state produced by this source without resorting to frequency conversion.
We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally a high level of control of the four-wave mixing process in an inert gas filled inhibited-coupling guiding hollow-core photonic crystal fiber in order to generate photon pairs. The specific multiple-branch dispersion profile in such fibers allows both entangled and separable bi-photon states to be produced. By controlling the choice of gas, its pressure and the fiber length, we experimentally generate various joint spectral intensity profiles in a stimulated regime that is transferable to the spontaneous regime. The generated profiles cover both s…
In hybrid quantum systems a controllable coupling can be obtained by mediating the interactions with dynamically introduced photons. We propose a hybrid quantum architecture consisting of two nitrogen vacancy center ensembles coupled to a tunable flux qubit; that are contained on the transmission line of a multimode nonlinear superconducting coplanar waveguide resonator with an appended Josephson mixing device. We discuss using entangled propagating microwaves photons, which through our nonlinear wave-mixing procedure are made into macroscopically distinct quantum states. We use these states t…
We report on a compact, simple and robust high brightness entangled photon source at room temperature. Based on a 30 mm long periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate (PPKTP), the source produces non-collinear, type0 phase matched, degenerate photons at 810 nm with pair production rate as high 39.13 MHz per mW at room temperature. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest photon pair rate generated using bulk crystals pump with continuous-wave laser. Combined with the inherently stable polarization Sagnac interferometer, the source produces entangled state violating the Bells ineq…
Integrated entangled photon pair source is an essential resource for both fundamental investigations and practical applications of quantum information science. Currently there have been several types of entanglement, among which the transverse-mode entanglement is becoming attractive because of its unique advantages. Here, we report an on-chip transverse-mode entangled photon pair source via the spontaneous four-wave mixing processes in a multimode silicon waveguide. Transverse-mode photon pairs are verified over multiple frequency channels within a bandwidth of $\sim$2~THz, and a maximally en…
Tripartite entangled states, such as GHZ and W states, are typically generated by manipulating two pairs of polarization-entangled photons in bulk optics. Here we propose a scheme to generate W states that are entangled in the energy degree of freedom in an integrated optical circuit. Our approach employs photon pairs generated by spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) in a micro- ring resonator. We also present a feasible procedure for demonstrating the generation of such a state, and we compare polarization-entangled and energy-entangled schemes for the preparation of W states.
We propose and design a high-brightness, ultra-compact electrically pumped GaSb-based laser source of entangled photons generated by mode-matched intracavity parametric down-conversion of lasing modes. To describe the nonlinear mixing in highly dispersive and dissipative waveguides, we develop a nonperturbative quantum theory of parametric down-conversion of waveguide modes which takes into account the effects of modal dispersion, group and phase mismatch, propagation, dissipation, and coupling to noisy reservoirs. We extend our theory to the regime of quantized pump fields with a new approach…
We show that the light generated via spontaneous four-wave mixing or parametric down conversion in multiple, coupled, lossy cavities is a multimode squeezed thermal state. Requiring this state to be the solution of the Lindblad master equation results in a set of coupled first-order differential equations for the time-dependent squeezing parameters and thermal photon numbers of the state. The benefit of this semi-analytic approach is that the number of coupled equations scales linearly with the number of modes but is independent of the number of photons generated. With this analytic form of th…
We demonstrate an unseeded, multimode four-wave mixing process in hot $^{85}$Rb vapor, using two pump beams of the same frequency that cross at a small angle. This results in the simultaneous fulfillment of multiple phase-matching conditions that reinforce one another to produce four intensity-stabilized bright output modes at two different frequencies. Each generated photon is directly correlated to exactly two others, resulting in the preferred four-mode output, in contrast to other multimode four-wave mixing experiments. This provides significant insight into the optimal configuration of th…
We show how to implement quantum transport, generate entangled state and achieve spatial entanglement distribution via topological Thouless pumping in one-dimensional disordered lattices. We introduce the on-site disorders to suppress the high-order resonant tunneling (which cause wavepacket dispersion) and realize dispersionless Thouless pumping. The interplay between the on-site disorders and the band topology enables robust unidirectional transport. We also demonstrate how to prepare spatially entangled two-particle NOON state via Hong-Ou-Mandel interference assisted by the Thouless pumping…
We report a wavelength division multiplexed time-bin entangled photon pair source in telecom wavelength using a 10 μm radius Si ring resonator. This compact resonator has two add ports and two drop ports. By pumping one add port by a continuous laser, we demonstrate an efficient generation of two-wavelength division multiplexed time-bin entangled photon pairs in the telecom C-band, which come out of one drop port, and are then split into the signal and idler photons via a wavelength filter. The resonator structure enhances four wave mixing for pair generation. Moreover, we demonstrate the doub…
Quantum states of light with multiple spatial modes are fundamental for quantum imaging and parallel quantum information processing. Thus, their characterization, which can be achieved through measurements of the coherence area, is an important area of research. We present a comparative study between two different measurement techniques for the coherence area of bright entangled twin beams of light generated with a four-wave mixing process in a hot rubidium vapor cell. The first one provides a direct characterization of the size of the coherence area and is based on correlation measurements be…
A silicon quantum photonic circuit was proposed and demonstrated as an integrated quantum light source for telecom band polarization entangled Bell state generation and dynamical manipulation. Biphoton states were firstly generated in four silicon waveguides by spontaneous four wave mixing. They were transformed to polarization entangled Bell states through on-chip quantum interference and quantum superposition, and then coupled to optical fibers. The property of polarization entanglement in generated photon pairs was demonstrated by two-photon interferences under two non-orthogonal polarizati…
Efficient heralded generation of entanglement together with its manipulation is of great importance for quantum communications. In addition, states generated with bandwidths naturally compatible with atomic transitions allow a more efficient mapping of light into matter which is an essential requirement for long distance quantum communications. Here we propose a scheme where the indistinguishability between two spontaneous four-wave mixing processes is engineered to herald generation of single-photon frequency-bin entangled states, i.e., single-photons shared by two distinct frequency modes. W…
Using the quantum teleportation in continuous variables as a test scheme, we compare two entangled transformations - mixing of signals on a beamsplitter and by the CZ operation. We evaluate these transformations in terms of the errors added to teleported oscillators. We have shown that the CZ operation leads to the lower error of teleportation. This error can be further reduced by choosing appropriate weight coefficients for the CZ transforms. We have compared the errors of the theoretical CZ scheme and its practical implementation in the optical design. Although the CZ optical scheme adds int…
We study the effects of time ordering in photon generation processes such as spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) and four wave mixing (SFWM). The results presented here are used to construct an intuitive picture that allows us to predict when time ordering effects significantly modify the joint spectral amplitude (JSA) of the photons generated in SPDC and SFWM. These effects become important only when the photons being generated lie with the pump beam that travels through the non-linear material for a significant amount of time. Thus sources of spectrally separable photons are ideal …
