We have extensively studied the broadband X-ray spectra of the source ESO~141--G055 using all available \xmm{} and \nustar{} observations. We detect a prominent soft excess below 2 keV, a narrow Fe line and a Compton hump (>10 keV). The origin of the soft excess is still debated. We used two models to describe the soft excess: the blurred reflection from the ionized accretion disk and the intrinsic thermal Comptonisation model. We find that both of these models explain the soft excess equally well. We confirm that we do not detect any broad Fe line in the X-ray spectra of this source, although both the physical models prefer a maximally spinning black hole scenario (a$>$0.96). This may mean that either the broad Fe line is absent or blurred beyond detection. The Eddington rate of the source is estimated to be $λ_{Edd} \sim 0.31$. In the reflection model, the Compton hump has a contribution from both ionized and neutral reflection components. The neutral reflector which simultaneously describes the narrow Fe K$α$ and the Compton hump has a column density of $\rm N_{H} \geq 7\times 10^{24} \rm cm^{-2} $. In addition, we detect a partially covering ionized absorption with ionization parameter $\log ξ/\rm erg cm s^{-1}$ = $0.1^{+0.1}_{-0.1}$ and column density $\rm N_{H} =20.6^{+1.0}_{-1.0}\times 10^{22} \rm cm^{-2}$ with a covering factor of $0.21^{+0.01}_{-0.01}$.
We present here our results on the hour like time scale X-ray flux variations in a sample of active galactic nuclei using data from the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR). We find that in the 3-79 keV band, BL Lacs are more variable than flat spectrum radio quasars and Seyfert galaxies. Among Seyferts, Seyfert 2s are more variable than Seyfert 1s. Also, radio-loud quasars are more variable in the hard (10-79 keV) band than the soft (3-10 keV) band while, Seyfert galaxies tend to show more variations in the soft band relative to the hard band.
The NuSTAR observatory, with its high sensitivity in hard X-rays, has enabled detailed broadband modeling of the X-ray spectra of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), thereby allowing constraints to be placed on the high-energy cutoff of the X-ray coronal continuum. We investigate the spectral properties of a sample of 46 NuSTAR-observed Seyfert 1 AGN selected from the Swift/BAT 70-month hard X-ray survey. Our measurements of the high-energy cutoff of the continuum from modeling the NuSTAR X-ray spectra are used to map out the temperature - compactness ($θ-l$) plane for AGN coronae. We find that most…
We present analysis of NuSTAR X-ray observations in the 3-79 keV energy band of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4388, taken in 2013. The broadband sensitivity of NuSTAR, covering the Fe K$α$ line and Compton reflection hump, enables tight constraints to be placed on reflection features in AGN X-ray spectra, thereby providing insight into the geometry of the circumnuclear material. In this observation, we found the X-ray spectrum of NGC 4388 to be well described by a moderately absorbed power law with non-relativistic reflection. We fit the spectrum with phenomenological reflection models and a physic…
We report flux-resolved spectroscopic analysis of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) ESO 103--035 using \textit{NuSTAR} observations. Following an earlier work, we fit the spectra using a thermal Comptonization model with a relativistic reflection component to obtain estimates of the coronal temperature for two flux levels. The coronal temperature was found to increase from 24.0$^{+6.8}_{-3.4}$ to 55.3$^{+54.6}_{-7.2}$ keV (errors at 1-$σ$ confidence level) as the flux increased from $9.8$ to $11.9 \times 10^{-11}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ in the 3--78 keV band. A marginal variation in the high e…
We present the 2--78 keV spectral analysis of the deep NuSTAR and XMM-Newton observation of a nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy, ESO 116-G018, which is selected as a candidate Compton-thick (CT-) active galactic nucleus (AGN) based on a previous Chandra-Swift/BAT study. Through our analysis, the source is for the first time confirmed to be a CT-AGN at a $>$3 $σ$ confidence level, with the 'line-of-sight' column density N$_{\rm H,Z}$ = [2.46-2.76] $\times$ $10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$. The 'global average' column density of the obscuring torus is N$_{\rm H,S}$ = [0.46-0.62] $\times$ $10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$, which sug…
We present measurements of the coronae of two AGN from hard X-ray observations made with NuSTAR: ESO 103-035, a moderately to highly obscured source with significant reflection; and IGR 2124.7+5058, a radio-loud source with a very hard spectrum. Using an exponentially cut-off powerlaw model for the coronal emission spectrum gives a high-energy cut-off of $100_{-30}^{+90}$ keV for ESO 103-035 and $80_{-9}^{+11}$ keV for IGR 2124.7+5058, within the typical range for AGN. Fitting with physical Comptonisation models shows that these correspond to a temperature of $22_{-6}^{+19}$ and $20_{-2}^{+3}$…
We present a spectral analysis of the NuSTAR and XMM-Newton observations of the Seyfert 1h galaxy/ULIRG IRAS 05189-2524 taken in 2013. We find evidence for relativistic disk reflection in the broadband X-ray spectrum: a highly asymmetric broad Fe K$α$ emission line extending down to 3 keV and a Compton scattering component above 10 keV. Physical modeling with a self-consistent disk reflection model suggests the accretion disk is viewed at an intermediate angle with a super-solar iron abundance, and a mild constraint can be put on the high-energy cutoff of the power-law continuum. We test the d…
We present NuSTAR observations of the bright Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 2110 obtained in 2012, when the source was at the highest flux level ever observed, and in 2013, when the source was at a more typical flux level. We include archival observations from other X-ray satellites, namely XMM-Newton, Suzaku, BeppoSAX, Chandra and Swift. Simultaneous NuSTAR and Swift broad band spectra (in the 3-80 keV range) indicate a cutoff energy $E_{\rm c}>210$ keV, with no detectable contribution from Compton reflection. NGC 2110 is one of the very few sources where no evidence for distant Compton thick scatterin…
We present a detailed spectral study of the narrow-line Seyfert~1 galaxy, Markarian~335, using eight epoch observations made between 2013 and 2020 with the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array. The source was variable during this period both in spectral flux and flow geometry. We estimated the height of the Compton cloud from the model fitted parameters for the whole observation period. This allowed us to investigate the underlying physical processes that drive the variability in X-rays. Our model fitted mass varies in a narrow range, between $(2.44\pm0.45-3.04\pm0.56)\times10^{7}M_\odot$, ho…
We report on the NuSTAR observations of two bright Seyfert 1 galaxies, namely MCG +8-11-11 (100 ks) and NGC 6814 (150 ks). The main goal of these observations was to investigate the Comptonization mechanisms acting in the innermost regions of AGN which are believed to be responsible for the UV/X-ray emission. The spectroscopic analysis of the NuSTAR spectra of these two sources revealed that although they had different properties overall (black hole masses, luminosity and Eddington ratios) they had very similar coronal properties. Both presented a power law spectrum with a high-energy cutoff a…
We present measurement of the cut-off energy, a proxy for the temperature of the corona in the nuclear continuum of the Seyfert 1 galaxy 3C 120 using $\sim$120 ks of observation from ${\it NuSTAR}$. The quality broad band spectrum from 3$-$79 keV has enabled us to measure the Compton reflection component (R) and to constrain the temperature of the coronal plasma. Fitting one of the advanced Comptonization models, ${\it compPS}$ to the observed broad band spectrum we derived the kinetic temperature of the electrons in the corona to be $kT_e = 25 \pm 2$ keV with Compton ${\it y}$ parameter of $y…
The primary X-ray emission from AGN, described by a power law, irradiates the accretion disc producing reflection features in the spectrum. The reflection features arising from the inner regions of the disc can be significantly modified by the relativistic effects near the black hole. We investigate the relationship between the relativistic reflection fraction $R_f$, defined as the ratio of the coronal intensity that illuminates the accretion disc to the coronal intensity observed directly, and the hard X-ray photon index $Γ$ of a NuSTAR sample of Seyfert 1 galaxies. The X-ray spectra are mode…
We present the spectral analysis with the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) of four isolated galaxies with active galactic nuclei selected from 2MIG catalogue: NGC 5347, ESO 438-009, MCG-02-09-040, and IGR J11366-6002. We also used the Swift/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) data up to $\sim$ 150 keV for MCG 02-09-040, ESO 438-009, and IGR J11366-6002 as well as the Swift/XRT data in 0.3--10 keV energy band for NGC 5347, ESO 438-009, and IGR J11366-6002. All the sources appear to have the reflected spectrum component with different reflection fractions in addition to the primary power-l…
We discuss the results on the hot corona parameters of Active Galactic Nuclei that have been recently measured with NuSTAR. The values taken from the literature of a sample of nineteen bright Seyfert galaxies are analysed. Aims. The aim of this work is to look for correlations between coronal parameters, such as the photon index and cutoff energy (when a phenomenological model is adopted) or the optical depth and temperature (when a Comptonization model is used), with other parameters of the systems like the black hole mass or the Eddington ratio. We analysed the coronal parameters of the nine…
The observed nuclear X-ray emission in the radio-quiet category of active galactic nuclei (AGN) is believed to be from a compact region, the corona situated in the vicinity of the central supermassive black holes (SMBH). The shape of the X-ray continuum, among other factors, depends on the temperature of the corona ($\rm{kT_{e}}$). The launch of the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) has led to the determination of the high energy cut-off ($\rm{E_{cut}}$; and thereby $\rm{kT_{e}}$) in many AGN. In a handful of sources, multiple observations with NuSTAR have also revealed changes in…
We present a detailed spectral analysis of the joint XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations of the active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the Seyfert 1.5 Galaxy ESO 362-G18. The broadband ($0.3\mbox{--}79$ keV) spectrum shows the presence of a power-law continuum with a soft excess below $2$ keV, iron K$α$ emission ($\sim 6.4$ keV), and a Compton hump (peaking at $\sim 20$ keV). We find that the soft excess can be modeled by two different possible scenarios: a warm ($kT_\mathrm{e}\sim0.2$ keV) and optically thick ($τ\sim34$) Comptonizing corona; or with relativistically-blurred reflection off a high-dens…
The primary X-ray emission in active galactic nuclei (AGN) originates in a compact region called the corona located very close to the super-massive black hole and the accretion disk. The knowledge of the cut-off energy ($E_{cut}$) of the primary X-ray continuum in an AGN is very important as it carries information on the physical characteristics of the hot X-ray emitting corona. We present here the results of our investigation on the spectral properties of a sample of 10 nearby AGN (0.005 $<$ $z$ $<$ 0.037) observed with the {\it Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR)} . From fitting o…
The reprocessed X-ray emission from Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is an important diagnostic tool to study the dynamics and geometry of the matter surrounding the supermassive black holes (SMBHs). We present a broadband (optical-UV to hard X-ray) spectral study of the bare Seyfert 1 galaxy, ESO~511--G030, using multi-epoch Suzaku and XMM-Newton data from 2012 and 2007 respectively. The broadband spectra of ESO~511--G030 exhibit a UV bump, a prominent soft-excess below 2 keV, a relatively broad ($σ=0.08 - 0.14$ keV) Fe emission line at 6.4 keV and a weak Compton hump at E > 10 keV. The soft X-ra…
We review the Seyfert 1.5 Galaxy ESO 362-G18 for exploring the origin of the soft X-ray excess. The Warm Corona and Relativistic Reflection models are two main scenarios to interpret the soft X-ray excess in AGNs at present. We use the simultaneous X-ray observation data of XMM-Newton and NuSTAR on Sep. 24th, 2016 to perform spectral analysis in two steps. First, we analyze the time-average spectra by using Warm Corona and Relativistic Reflection models. Moreover, we also explore the Hybrid model, Double Reflection model and Double Warm Corona model. We find that both of Warm Corona and Relati…
One of the open problems for AGN is the nature of the primary X-ray emission: it is likely due to Comptonization of soft UV photons, but the optical depth and temperature of the emitting corona were largely unknown before the launch of the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR). It is the first focusing hard X-ray telescope on orbit, 100 times more sensitive in the 10-79 keV band compared to previous observatories, enabling the study of AGN at high energies with high precision. We present and discuss the results on the hot corona parameters of Active Galactic Nuclei that have been rece…
We discuss the broadband X-ray spectrum of GRS 1734-292 obtained from non-simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations, performed in 2009 and 2014, respectively. GRS1734-292 is a Seyfert 1 galaxy, located near the Galactic plane at $z=0.0214$. The NuSTAR spectrum ($3-80$ keV) is dominated by a primary power-law continuum with $Γ=1.65 \pm 0.05$ and a high-energy cutoff $E_c=53^{+11}_{-8}$ keV, one of the lowest measured by NuSTAR in a Seyfert galaxy. Comptonization models show a temperature of the coronal plasma of $kT_e=11.9^{+1.2}_{-0.9}$ keV and an optical depth, assuming a slab geometry,…
We present results on a systematic study of flux variability on hourly time-scales in a large sample of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the 3-79 keV band using data from Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array. Our sample consists of 4 BL Lac objects (BL Lacs), 3 flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) 24 Seyfert 1, 42 Seyfert 2 and 8 narrow line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxies. We find that in the 3-79 keV band, about 65% of the sources in our sample show significant variations on hourly time scales. Using Mann-Whitney U-test and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, we find no difference in the variability behaviou…
We present the joint Chandra, XMM-Newton and NuSTAR analysis of two nearby Seyfert galaxies, NGC 3081 and ESO 565-G019. These are the only two having Chandra data in a larger sample of ten low redshift ($z \le 0.05$), candidates Compton-thick Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) selected in the 15-150 keV band with Swift-BAT that were still lacking NuSTAR data. Our spectral analysis, performed using physically-motivated models, provides an estimate of both the line-of-sight (l.o.s.) and average (N$_{H,S}$) column densities of the two torii. NGC 3081 has a Compton-thin l.o.s. column density N$_{H,z}$=[…
We present the timing and spectral analysis of the Compton Thick Seyfert 2 active galactic nuclei NGC 1068 observed using {\it NuSTAR} and {\it XMM-Newton}. In this work for the first time we calculated the coronal temperature ($\rm{kT_{e}}$) of the source and checked for its variation between the epochs if any. The data analysed in this work comprised of (a) eight epochs of observations with {\it NuSTAR} carried out during the period December 2012 to November 2017, and, (b) six epochs of observations with {\it XMM-Newton} carried out during July 2000 to February 2015. From timing analysis of …
We present the first NuSTAR observation of a 'true' Type 2 Seyfert galaxy. The 3-40 keV X-ray spectrum of NGC3147 is characterised by a simple power-law, with a standard Γ~1.7 and an iron emission line, with no need for any further component up to ~40 keV. These spectral properties, together with significant variability on time-scales as short as weeks (as shown in a 2014 Swift monitoring campaign), strongly support an unobscured line-of-sight for this source. An alternative scenario in terms of a Compton-thick source is strongly disfavoured, requiring an exceptional geometrical configuration,…
We present a broad band spectral analysis of the joint XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observational campaign of the Narrow Line Seyfert 1 SWIFT J2127.4+5654, consisting of 300 ks performed during three XMM-Newton orbits. We detect a relativistic broadened iron K$α$ line originating from the innermost regions of the accretion disc surrounding the central black hole, from which we infer an intermediate spin of $a$=$0.58^{+0.11}_{-0.17}$. The intrinsic spectrum is steep ($Γ=2.08\pm0.01$) as commonly found in Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies, while the cutoff energy (E$_{\rm c}=108^{+11}_{-10}$ keV) falls wi…
Broadband X-ray spectroscopy of the X-ray emission produced in the coronae of active galactic nuclei (AGN) can provide important insights into the physical conditions very close to their central supermassive black holes. The temperature of the Comptonizing plasma that forms the corona is manifested through a high-energy cutoff that has been difficult to directly constrain even in the brightest AGN because it requires high-quality data at energies above 10 keV. In this paper we present a large collection of coronal cutoff constraints for obscured AGN based on a sample of 130 AGN selected in the…
We present results from a joint Xmm-Newton/NuSTAR monitoring of the Seyfert 1 NGC 4593, consisting of 5x20 ks simultaneous observations spaced by two days, performed in January 2015. The source is variable, both in flux and spectral shape, on time-scales down to a few ks and with a clear softer-when-brighter behaviour. In agreement with past observations, we find the presence of a warm absorber well described by a two-phase ionized outflow. The source exhibits a cold, narrow and constant Fe K alpha line at 6.4 keV, and a broad component is also detected. The broad-band (0.3-79 keV) spectrum is…
We present a spectral and imaging analysis of the XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy ESO138-G001, with the aim of characterizing the circumnuclear material responsible for the soft (0.3-2.0 keV) and hard (5-10 keV) X-ray emission. We confirm that the source is absorbed by Compton-thick gas. However, if a self-consistent model of reprocessing from cold toroidal material is used (MYTorus), a possible scenario requires the absorber to be inhomogenous, its column density along the line of sight being larger than the average column density integrated over all lines- of-sigh…
We present the first detailed X-ray analysis of three AGN, the Seyfert 1 galaxies UGC 3142 and ESO 140-43, and the Seyfert 2 galaxy ESO 383-18, in order to study the geometry and the physical characteristics of their absorbers. High quality XMM-Newton EPIC and RGS data were analysed, as well as Swift/XRT and BAT and INTEGRAL IBIS/ISGRI data, in order to cover the 0.3--110 keV energy range. For ESO 140-43 also XMM-Newton/OM and Swift/UVOT data were used. We studied the variability of the three AGN on a time-scale of seconds using the EPIC/PN light curves, and the long-term time-scale variabilit…
We report results from multi-epoch X-ray observations of the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy ESO 362-G18 performed between November 2005 and June 2010. ESO 362-G18 generally exhibits the typical X-ray spectrum of type 1 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). A disc-reflection component accounts for broad residuals in the iron K band and above 10~keV, as well as for a significant soft excess. From our best-fitting reflection model, we measure a black hole spin greater or equal to 0.92 at the 99.99 per cent confidence level. ESO 362-G18 is also (typically) mildly absorbed by a column of neutral gas. The absorber is v…
The presence of an obscuring torus at pc-scale distances from the central black hole is the main ingredient for the Unified Model of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), as obscured sources are thought to be seen through this structure. However, the Unified Model fails to describe a class of sources that undergo dramatic spectral changes, transitioning from obscured to unobscured and vice-versa through time. The variability in such sources, so-called Changing Look AGN (CLAGN), is thought to be produced by a clumpy medium at much smaller distances than the conventional obscuring torus. ESO 323-G77 is …
We present $NuSTAR$ observations of four active galactic nuclei (AGN) located within 15 Mpc. These AGN, namely ESO 121-G6, NGC 660, NGC 3486 and NGC 5195, have observed X-ray luminosities of $L_{\rm 2-10\ keV, obs} \lesssim$ 10$^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$, classifying them as low luminosity AGN (LLAGN). We perform broadband X-ray spectral analysis for the AGN by combining our $NuSTAR$ data with $Chandra$ or $XMM-Newton$ observations to directly measure their column densities ($N_{\rm H}$) and infer their intrinsic power. We complement our X-ray data with archival and new high angular resolution mid-in…
NuSTAR observed the bright Compton-thin, narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy, NGC 5506, for about 56 ks. In agreement with past observations, the spectrum is well fit by a power law with Gamma~1.9, a distant reflection component and narrow ionized iron lines. A relativistically blurred reflection component is not required by the data. When an exponential high energy cutoff is added to the power law, a value of 720(+130,-190) keV (90% confidence level) is found. Even allowing for systematic uncertainties, we find a 3 sigma lower limit to the high-energy cutoff of 350 keV, the highest lower limit to th…
A fraction of active galactic nuclei (AGN) exhibit dramatic variability, which is observed on timescales down to minutes in the X-ray band. We introduce the case study of 1H 1934-063 (z = 0.0102), a Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) among the brightest and most variable AGN ever observed with XMM-Newton. This work includes spectral and temporal analyses of a concurrent XMM-Newton and NuSTAR 2015 observation lasting 130 kiloseconds, during which the X-ray source exhibited a steep (factor of 6) plummet and subsequent full recovery of flux level, accompanied by deviation from a single log-normal flux …
We discuss preliminary results from a joint XMM-Newton and NuSTAR monitoring program on the active galactic nucleus NGC 4593, consisting of 5x20 ks observations, spaced by two days, performed in January 2015. The source is found to be variable, both in flux and spectral shape, on time scales as short as a few ks. The spectrum clearly softens when the source brightens. A simple timing analysis suggests the presence of a variable soft excess that correlates with the primary continuum.
We analyse the properties of the X-ray emission from Seyfert 2 NGC 7172 which are based on the 32 ks observational data from NuSTAR in 2014. This source showed a constant Compton-thin obscuration $N_{H}\approx 8\cdot 10^{22} cm^{-2}$, which is similar to that observed by XMM-Newton, Suzaku, ASCA and BeppoSAX over past 30 years. We revealed the presence of a moderate reflection component with <R>~0.44 and a narrow FeKα line with $67^{+13}_{-14}$ eV. The applied numerical models of torus confirmed the Compton-thin type of the Seyfert nucleus and allowed us to obtain an estimate of the torus open…
We report the discovery of kpc-scale diffuse emission in both the hard continuum (3-6 keV) and in the Fe K alpha line in the Compton Thick (CT) Seyfert galaxy ESO428-G014. This extended hard component contains at least ~24% of the observed 3-8 keV emission, and follows the direction of the extended optical line emission (ionization cone) and radio jet. The extended hard component has ~0.5% of the intrinsic 2-10 keV luminosity within the bi-cones. A uniform scattering medium of density 1 cm-3 would produce this luminosity in a 1kpc path length in the bi-cones. Alternatively, higher column densi…

Measurements of the high-energy cut-off in the coronal continuum of active galactic nuclei have long been elusive for all but a small number of the brightest examples. We present a direct measurement of the cut-off energy in the nuclear continuum of the nearby Seyfert 1.9 galaxy MCG -05-23-016 with unprecedented precision. The high sensitivity of NuSTAR up to 79 keV allows us to clearly disentangle the spectral curvature of the primary continuum from that of its reflection component. Using a simple phenomenological model for the hard X-ray spectrum, we constrain the cut-off energy to $116_{-5}…
We present a detailed analysis of the spectral properties of the Seyfert 1 galaxy 1H0419-577, based on the archival XMM-Newton, NuSTAR and simultaneous Swift observations taken between 2002-2015. All the observations show a broad emission line feature at the iron band. We demonstrate that the broad band spectral variability at different levels can be explained by the combination of light-bending effects in the vicinity of the central black hole plus a thin warm absorber. We obtain a black hole spin of a > 0.98 by fitting the multi-epoch spectra with the relativistic disc reflection model. 1H04…
We analyze the broad-band X-ray spectrum (0.3-50 keV) of the luminous Seyfert 1 / quasar PG 1211+143 - the archetypal source for high-velocity X-ray outflows - using near-simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations. We compare pure relativistic reflection models with a model including the strong imprint of photoionized emission and absorption from a high-velocity wind (Pounds16a,16b), finding a spectral fit that extrapolates well over the higher photon energies covered by NuSTAR. Inclusion of the high S/N XMM-Newton spectrum provides much tighter constraints on the model parameters, with a…
We present medium and high resolution X-ray spectral study of a Seyfert 1 galaxy ESO~198--G24 using a long (122 ks) XMM-Newton observation performed in February 2006. The source has a prominent featureless soft X-ray excess below $2\kev$. This makes the source well suited to investigate the origin of the soft excess. Two physical models -- blurred reflection, and optically thick thermal Comptonization in a warm plasma, describe the soft-excess equally well resulting in similar fits in the $0.3-10\kev$ band. These models also yield similar fits to the broad-band UV (Optical Monitor) and X-ray d…
We present simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations of the `bare' Seyfert 1 galaxy, Ark 120, a system in which ionized absorption is absent. The NuSTAR hard X-ray spectral coverage allows us to constrain different models for the excess soft X-ray emission. Among phenomenological models, a cutoff power law best explains the soft X-ray emission. This model likely corresponds to Comptonization of the accretion disk seed UV photons by a population of warm electrons: using Comptonization models, a temperature of ~0.3 keV and an optical depth of ~13 are found. If the UV-to-X-ray optxagnf mode…
We present a NuSTAR and XMM-Newton monitoring campaign in 2014/2015 of the Compton-thick Seyfert 2 galaxy, NGC 1068. During the August 2014 observation, we detect with NuSTAR a flux excess above 20 keV ($32\pm6 \%$) with respect to the December 2012 observation and to a later observation performed in February 2015. We do not detect any spectral variation below 10 keV in the XMM-Newton data. The transient excess can be explained by a temporary decrease of the column density of the obscuring material along the line of sight (from N$_{\rm H}\simeq10^{25}$ cm$^{-2}$ to N$_{\rm H}=6.7\pm1.0\times10…
Broad-line radio galaxies (BLRGs) are active galactic nuclei that produce powerful, large-scale radio jets, but appear as Seyfert 1 galaxies in their optical spectra. In the X-ray band, BLRGs also appear like Seyfert galaxies, but with flatter spectra and weaker reflection features. One explanation for these properties is that the X-ray continuum is diluted by emission from the jet. Here, we present two NuSTAR observations of the BLRG 3C 382 that show clear evidence that the continuum of this source is dominated by thermal Comptonization, as in Seyfert 1 galaxies. The two observations were sep…
We present the first analysis of the X-ray warm absorber and nuclear obscuration in the Seyfert 1.8 galaxy ESO 113-G010. We used archival data from a 100 ks XMM-Newton observation made in 2005. From high resolution spectroscopy analysis of the RGS data, we detect absorption lines originating from a warm absorber consisting of two distinct phases of ionisation, with log xi ~ 3.2 and 2.3 respectively. The higher-ionised component has a larger column density and outflow velocity (N_H ~ 1.6 x 10^22 cm^-2, v ~ -1100 km/s) than the lower-ionised component (N_H ~ 0.5 x 10^22 cm^-2, v ~ -700 km/s). Th…
We study X-ray spectra of four Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s), Mrk 110, SWIFT J2127.4+5654, IGR J16185-5928, and WKK 4438, using Suzaku and NuSTAR data. The spectra of the four sources are reproduced with a model consisting of a cutoff power law component, a reflection component, and a soft excess component. The photon indices of all the sources are found to be ~ 2. The cutoff energies are constrained to be ~ 40 keV for Mrk 110, SWIFT J2127.4+5654, and WKK 4438, whereas a lower limit of 155 keV is obtained for IGR J16185-5928. We find that the NLS1s in our sample have systematically so…
The Narrow-line Seyfert I galaxy, 1H0707-495, has been well observed in the 0.3-10 keV band, revealing a dramatic drop in flux in the iron K alpha band, a strong soft excess, and short timescale reverberation lags associated with these spectral features. In this paper, we present the first results of a deep 250 ks NuSTAR observation of 1H0707-495, which includes the first sensitive observations above 10 keV. Even though the NuSTAR observations caught the source in an extreme low-flux state, the Compton hump is still significantly detected. NuSTAR, with its high effective area above 7 keV, clea…
While the temperature of the X-ray corona ($\rm{kT_e}$) in active galactic nuclei (AGN) are known for many sources, its variation, if any, is limited to a handful of objects. This is in part due to the requirement of good signal-to-noise X-ray spectra covering a wide range of energies. We present here results on the X-ray spectral analysis of 18 Seyferts, having more than one epoch of observations to look for variation in $\rm{kT_e}$. The data for a total of 52 epochs on these 18 AGN were taken from observations carried out by NuSTAR in the 3$-$79 keV energy band. From phenomenological and phy…
We present results from a deep, coordinated $XMM$-$Newton$+$NuSTAR$ observation of the Seyfert 2 galaxy IRAS 00521-7054. The $NuSTAR$ data provide the first detection of this source in high-energy X-rays ($E > 10$ keV), and the broadband data show this to be a highly complex source which exhibits relativistic reflection from the inner accretion disc, further reprocessing by more distant material, neutral absorption, and evidence for ionised absorption in an extreme, ultrafast outflow ($v_{\rm{out}} \sim 0.4c$). Based on lamppost disc reflection models, we find evidence that the central superma…
We report on four epochs of observations of the quasar PG 1211+143 using NuSTAR. The net exposure time is 300 ks. Prior work on this source found suggestive evidence of an 'ultra-fast outflow' (or, UFO) in the Fe K band, with a velocity of approximately 0.1c. The putative flow would carry away a high mass flux and kinetic power, with broad implications for feedback and black hole-galaxy co-evolution. NuSTAR detects PG 1211+143 out to 30 keV, meaning that the continuum is well-defined both through and above the Fe K band. A characteristic relativistic disk reflection spectrum is clearly reveale…
We test the two-corona accretion scenario for active galactic nuclei in the case of the `bare' Seyfert 1 galaxy HE 1143-1810. We perform a detailed study of the broad-band UV--X-ray spectral properties and of the short-term variability. We present results of a joint XMM-Newton and NuSTAR monitoring of the source, consisting of 5x20 ks observations, each separated by 2 days, performed in December 2017. The source is variable in flux among the different observations, and a correlation is observed between the UV and X-ray emission. Moderate spectral variability is observed in the soft band. The t…
Investigating how the cutoff energy $E_{\rm cut}$ varies with X-ray flux and photon index $Γ$ in individual AGNs opens a new window to probe the yet unclear coronal physics. So far $E_{\rm cut}$ variations have only been detected in several AGNs but different patterns have been reported. Here we report new detections of $E_{\rm cut}$ variations in two Seyfert galaxies with multiple NuSTAR exposures. While in NGC 3227 $E_{\rm cut}$ monotonically increases with $Γ$, the $E_{\rm cut}$-$Γ$ relation exhibits a $Λ$ shape in SWIFT J2127.4+5654 ($E_{\rm cut}$ increasing with $Γ$ at $Γ$ $\lesssim$ 2.05…
