In this paper, we present a new class of conservative semi-Lagrangian schemes for kinetic equations. They are based on the conservative reconstruction technique introduced in [S. Y. Cho, et al., Conservative semi-Lagrangian schemes for kinetic equations Part I: Reconstruction, 2020]. The methods are high order accurate both in space and time. Because of the semi-Lagrangian nature, the time step is not restricted by a CFL-type condition. Applications are presented to rigid body rotation, Vlasov Poisson system and the BGK model of rarefied gas dynamics. In the first two cases operator splitting is adopted, to obtain high order accuracy in time, and a conservative reconstruction that preserves the maximum and minimum of the function is used. For initially positive solutions, in particular, this guarantees exact preservation of the L1-norm. Conservative schemes for the BGK model are constructed by coupling the conservative reconstruction with a conservative treatment of the collision term. High order in time is obtained by either Runge-Kutta or BDF time discretization of the equation along characteristics. Because of L-stability and exact conservation, the resulting scheme for the BGK model is asymptotic preserving for the underlying fluid dynamic limit. Several test cases in one and two space dimensions confirm the accuracy and robustness of the methods, and the AP property of the schemes when applied to the BGK model.
In this paper, we propose and analyse a reconstruction technique which enables one to design high-order conservative semi-Lagrangian schemes for kinetic equations. The proposed reconstruction can be obtained by taking the sliding average of a given polynomial reconstruction of the numerical solution. A compact representation of the high order conservative reconstruction in one and two space dimension is provided, and its mathematical properties are analyzed. To demonstrate the performance of proposed technique, we consider implicit semi-Lagrangian schemes for kinetic-like equations such as the…
In this work, we propose a class of high order semi-Lagrangian scheme for a general consistent BGK model for inert gas mixtures. The proposed scheme not only fulfills indifferentiability principle, but also asymptotic preserving property, which allows us to capture the behaviors of hydrodynamic limit models. We consider two hydrodynamic closure which can be derived from the BGK model at leading order: classical Euler equations for number densities, global velocity and temperature, and a multi-velocities and temperatures Euler system. Numerical simulations are performed to demonstrate indiffere…
Most numerical schemes proposed for solving BGK models for rarefied gas dynamics are based on the discrete velocity approximation. Since such approach uses fixed velocity grids, one must secure a sufficiently large domain with fine velocity grids to resolve the structure of distribution functions. When one treats high Mach number problems, the computational cost becomes prohibitively expensive. In this paper, we propose a velocity adaptation technique in the semi-Lagrangian framework for BGK model. The velocity grid will be set locally in time and space, according to mean velocity and temperat…

In this paper, we propose a novel conservative formulation for solving kinetic equations via neural networks. More precisely, we formulate the learning problem as a constrained optimization problem with constraints that represent the physical conservation laws. The constraints are relaxed toward the residual loss function by the Lagrangian duality. By imposing physical conservation properties of the solution as constraints of the learning problem, we demonstrate far more accurate approximations of the solutions in terms of errors and the conservation laws, for the kinetic Fokker-Planck equatio…
The purpose of this work is simulation of magnetised plasmas in the ITER project framework. In this context, kinetic Vlasov-Poisson like models are used to simulate core turbulence in the tokamak in a toroidal geometry. This leads to heavy simulations because a 6D dimensional problem has to be solved, even if reduced to a 5D in so called gyrokinetic models. Accurate schemes, parallel algorithms need to be designed to bear these simulations. This paper describes the numerical studies to improve robustness of the conservative PSM scheme in the context of its development in the GYSELA code. In th…
This article is devoted to the construction of a new class of semi-Lagrangian (SL) schemes with implicit-explicit (IMEX) Runge-Kutta (RK) time stepping for PDEs involving multiple space-time scales. The semi-Lagrangian (SL) approach fully couples the space and time discretization, thus making the use of RK strategies particularly difficult to be combined with. First, a simple scalar advection-diffusion equation is considered as a prototype PDE for the development of a high order formulation of the semi-Lagrangian IMEX algorithms. The advection part of the PDE is discretized explicitly at the a…
We propose an Eulerian-Lagrangian (EL) Runge-Kutta (RK) discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for wave equations. The method is designed based on the ELDG method for transport problems [J. Comput. Phy. 446: 110632, 2021.], which tracks solution along approximations to characteristics in the DG framework, allowing extra large time stepping sizes with stability. The wave equation can be written as a first order hyperbolic system. Considering each characteristic family, a straightforward application of ELDG will be to transform to the characteristic variables, evolve them on associated characteristi…

We present fourth-order conservative non-splitting semi-Lagrangian (SL) Hermite essentially non-oscillatory (HWENO) schemes for linear transport equations with applications for nonlinear problems including the Vlasov-Poisson system, the guiding center Vlasov model, and the incompressible Euler equations in the vorticity-stream function formulation. The proposed SL HWENO schemes combine a weak formulation of the characteristic Galerkin method with two newly constructed HWENO reconstruction methods. Fourth-order accuracy is accomplished in both space and time under a non-splitting setting. Mass …
The paper considers one-dimensional flows of a polytropic gas in the Lagrangian coordinates in three cases: plain one-dimensional flows, radially symmetric flows and spherically symmetric flows. The one-dimensional flow of a polytropic gas is described by one second-order partial differential equation in the Lagrangian variables. Lie group classification of this PDE is performed. Its variational structure allows to construct conservation laws with the help of Noether's theorem. These conservation laws are also recalculated for the gas dynamics variables in the Lagrangian and Eulerian coordinat…
In this paper, we develop a family of third order asymptotic-preserving (AP) and asymptotically accurate (AA) diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta (DIRK) time discretization methods for the stiff hyperbolic relaxation systems and kinetic Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) model in the semi-Lagrangian (SL) setting. The methods are constructed based on an accuracy analysis of the SL scheme for stiff hyperbolic relaxation systems and kinetic BGK model in the limiting fluid regime when the Knudsen number approaches $0$. An extra order condition for the asymptotic third order accuracy in the limiting regime is…
A high-order quasi-conservative discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is proposed for the numerical simulation of compressible multi-component flows. A distinct feature of the method is a predictor-corrector strategy to define the grid velocity. A Lagrangian mesh is first computed based on the flow velocity and then used as an initial mesh in a moving mesh method (the moving mesh partial differential equation or MMPDE method ) to improve its quality. The fluid dynamic equations are discretized in the direct arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian framework using DG elements and the non-oscillatory kinetic …
In this paper, the discrete unified gas kinetic scheme (DUGKS) with an improved microflux across the cell interface for the conservative Allen-Cahn equation (CACE) is proposed. In the context of DUGKS, the recovered kinetic equation from the flux evaluation with linear reconstruction in the previous DUGKS is analyzed. It is found that the calculated microflux across the cell interface is only the solution to the target kinetic equation with first order accuracy, which can result in an inaccurate CACE since the force term is involved or the first moment of the collision model has no conservatio…
We develop error estimates for the semi-discrete conservative spectral method for the approximation of the elastic and inelastic space homogeneous Boltzmann equation introduced by the authors in \cite{GT09}. In addition we study the long time convergence of such semi-discrete solution to equilibrium Maxwellian distribution that conserves the mass, momentum and energy associated to the initial data. The numerical method is based on the Fourier transform of the collisional operator and a Lagrangian optimization correction that enforces the collision invariants, namely conservation of mass, momen…
A semi-Lagrangian method for parabolic problems is proposed, that extends previous work by the authors to achieve a fully conservative, flux-form discretization of linear and nonlinear diffusion equations. A basic consistency and convergence analysis are proposed. Numerical examples validate the proposed method and display its potential for consistent semi-Lagrangian discretization of advection--diffusion and nonlinear parabolic problems.
The primary challenge in solving kinetic equations, such as the Vlasov equation, is the high-dimensional phase space. In this context, dynamical low-rank approximations have emerged as a promising way to reduce the high computational cost imposed by such problems. However, a major disadvantage of this approach is that the physical structure of the underlying problem is not preserved. In this paper, we propose a dynamical low-rank algorithm that conserves mass, momentum, and energy as well as the corresponding continuity equations. We also show how this approach can be combined with a conservat…
We are interested in the numerical approximation of discontinuous solutions in non conservative hyperbolic systems. An extension to second-order of a new strategy based on in-cell discontinuous reconstructions to deal with this challenging topic is presented. This extension is based on the combination of the first-order in-cell reconstruction and the MUSCL-Hancock reconstruction. The first-order strategy allowed in particular to capture exactly the isolated shocks and this new second-order extension keep this property. We also set the basis of an extension to high-order methods following this …
The semi-Lagrangian discontinuous Galerkin method, coupled with a splitting approach in time, has recently been introduced for the Vlasov--Poisson equation. Since these methods are conservative, local in space, and able to limit numerical diffusion, they are considered a promising alternative to more traditional semi-Lagrangian schemes. In this paper we study the conservation of important physical invariants and the long time behavior of the semi-Lagrangian discontinuous Galerkin method. To that end we conduct a theoretical analysis and perform a number of numerical simulations. In particular,…
In this paper, we develop a natural operator-splitting variational scheme for a general class of non-local, degenerate conservative-dissipative evolutionary equations. The splitting-scheme consists of two phases: a conservative (transport) phase and a dissipative (diffusion) phase. The first phase is solved exactly using the method of characteristic and DiPerna-Lions theory while the second phase is solved approximately using a JKO-type variational scheme that minimizes an energy functional with respect to a certain Kantorovich optimal transport cost functional. In addition, we also introduce …
