Recent and upcoming experimental data as well as the possibility of rich phenomenology have spiked interest in studying the quantum effects in cosmology at low (inflation-era) energy scales. One of the approaches to find covariant quantum corrections is the DeWitt-Vilkovisky's (DV) covariant effective action formalism that is gauge invariant and background field invariant. We use the DeWitt-Vilkovisky method to study formal and cosmological aspects of quantum fields in curved spacetime, and take initial steps towards studying quantum gravitational corrections in cosmological setting. The thesis comprises of mainly two parts. We first study the formal aspects of rank-2 antisymmetric tensor field which appear in the low energy limit of superstring models and are thus relevant in the early universe, in particular the quantization and quantum equivalence properties, for the case with and without spontaneous Lorentz violation. The effective action is generalized for gauge theories whose gauge parameters possess additional symmetries. When used in the case of spontaneously Lorentz violating antisymmetric tensor field model, it is found that classical equivalence with a vector theory breaks down at one-loop level due to the presence of Lorentz violating terms. The final chapter of this thesis is devoted to taking first steps towards exploring applications of DV method in early universe cosmology. We calculate perturbatively the covariant one-loop quantum gravitational effective action for a scalar field model inspired by the recently proposed nonminimal natural inflation model. The effective potential is evaluated taking into account the finite corrections, and an order-of-magnitude estimate of the one-loop corrections reveals that gravitational and non-gravitational corrections have same or comparable magnitudes.
We investigate the correspondence between generally covariant higher derivative scalar-tensor theory and spatially covariant gravity theory. The building blocks are the scalar field and spacetime curvature tensor together with their generally covariant derivatives for the former, and the spatially covariant geometric quantities together with their spatially covariant derivatives for the later. In the case of a single scalar degree of freedom, they are transformed to each other by gauge fixing and recovering procedures, of which we give the explicit expressions. We make a systematic classificat…
We extend previous work on conformally covariant differential operators to consider the case of second order operators acting on symmetric traceless tensor fields. The corresponding flat space Green function is explicitly constructed and shown to be in accord with the requirements of conformal invariance.
We study the particle content of higher derivative theories of gravity built with contractions of the Riemann tensor and its covariant derivatives. In the absence of the latter, there is a family of theories exhibiting an Einsteinian spectrum known as generalized quasi-topological gravities. In turn, we present a no-go result for the construction of Einsteinian gravities involving covariant derivatives of the Riemann tensor. We find evidences suggesting that (truncated series) finite order Lagrangians with covariant derivatives of the Riemann tensor generically present ghosts in their spectrum…
We investigate the ghostfree scalar-tensor theory with a timelike scalar field, with derivatives of the scalar field up to the third order and with the Riemann tensor up to the quadratic order. We build two types of linear spaces. One is the set of linearly independent generally covariant scalar-tensor monomials, the other is the set of linearly independent spatially covariant gravity monomials. We argue that these two types of linear space are isomorphic to each other in the sense of gauge fixing/recovering procedures. We then identify the subspaces in the spatially covariant gravity, which a…
General classical theories of material fields in an arbitrary Riemann-Cartan space are considered. For these theories, with the help of equations of balance, new non-trivially generalized, manifestly generally covariant expressions for canonical energy-momentum and spin tensors are constructed in the cases when a Lagrangian contains (a) an arbitrary set of tensorial material fields and their covariant derivatives up to the second order, as well as (b) the curvature tensor and (c) the torsion tensor with its covariant derivatives up to the second order. A non-trivial manifestly generally covari…
We study the covariant entropy bound in the context of gravitational collapse. First, we discuss critically the heuristic arguments advanced by Bousso. Then we solve the problem through an exact model: a Tolman-Bondi dust shell collapsing into a Schwarzschild black hole. After the collapse, a new black hole with a larger mass is formed. The horizon, $L$, of the old black hole then terminates at the singularity. We show that the entropy crossing $L$ does not exceed a quarter of the area of the old horizon. Therefore, the covariant entropy bound is satisfied in this process.
Unimodular gravity (UG) is an interesting theory that may explain why the cosmological constant is extremely small, in contrast to general relativity (GR). The theory has only the transverse diffeomorphism invariance and this causes lots of debate as to the equivalence of UG to GR in the covariant quantization. We study the covariant BRST quantization of UG by gauge fixing only the transverse diffeomorphism and show that the remaining physical degrees of freedom are two, the same number as GR. This is achieved by using antisymmetric tensor ghost fields which automatically satisfy the transvers…
We formulate Lorentz-covariant classical perturbation theory to deal with relativistic bremsstrahlung under gravitational scattering. Our approach is a version of the fast motion approximation scheme, the main novelty being the use of the momentum space representation. Using it we calculate in a closed form the spectrum of scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational radiation. Our results for the total emitted energy agree with those by Thorne and Kovacs. We also explain why the method of equivalent gravitons fails to produce the correct result for the spectral-angular distribution of emitted ra…
An action principle of singular hypersurfaces in general relativity and scalar-tensor type theories of gravity in the Einstein frame is presented without assuming any symmetry. The action principle is manifestly doubly covariant in the sense that coordinate systems on and off a hypersurface are disentangled and can be independently specified. It is shown that, including variation of the metric, the position of the hypersurface and matter fields, the variational principle gives the correct set of equations of motion: the Einstein equation off the hypersurface, Israel's junction condition in a d…
Within the general framework of spatially covariant theories of gravity, we study the conditions for having only the two tensorial degrees of freedom. Generally, there are three degrees of freedom propagating in the theory, of which two are tensorial and one is of the scalar type. Through a detailed Hamiltonian analysis, we find two necessary and sufficient conditions to evade the scalar type degree of freedom. The first condition implies that the lapse-extrinsic curvature sector must be degenerate. The second condition ensures that the dimension of the phase space at each spacetime point is e…
We present the covariant gravitational equations to describe a four-dimensional brane world in the case with the Gauss-Bonnet term in a bulk spacetime, assuming that gravity is confined on the $Z_2$ symmetric brane. It contains some components of five-dimensional Weyl curvature ($E_{μν}$) which describes all effects from the bulk spacetime just as in the case of the Randall-Sundrum second model. Applying this formalism to cosmology, we derive the generalized Friedmann equation and calculate the Weyl curvature term, which is directly obtained from a black hole solution.
We develop the calculation of the divergent part of one-loop covariant effective action for scalar fields minimally and non-minimally coupled to gravity using the generalized Schwinger-DeWitt technique. We derive the field-space metric using Vilkovisky's prescription and obtain new terms in the one-loop corrections which are absent in past literature with trivial choices of field-space metric. We further calculate the covariant versions of past results, obtained using the standard approach, by applying Barvinsky and Vilkovisky's extension to the ordinary Schwinger-DeWitt approach. For complete…
We discuss the dynamics of extended test bodies for a large class of scalar-tensor theories of gravitation. A covariant multipolar Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon type of approach is used to derive the equations of motion in a systematic way for both Jordan and Einstein formulations of these theories. The results obtained provide the framework to experimentally test scalar-tensor theories by means of extended test bodies.
Covariant quantization of rank-2 antisymmetric fields is non-trivial due to additional symmetries of the gauge parameters. We present an intuitive way to deal with this additional symmetry of gauge parameters in terms of geometrical understanding of field space. We generalize the DeWitt-Vilkovisky covariant effective action formalism for quantization of such theories. As an application, we quantize a massive rank-2 antisymmetric field using the covariant effective action approach and reproduce previously obtained results.
A necessary condition for a generally covariant scalar-tensor theory to be ghostfree is that it contains no extra degrees of freedom in the unitary gauge, in which the Lagrangian corresponds to the spatially covariant gravity. Comparing with analysing the scalar-tensor theory directly, it is simpler to map the spatially covariant gravity to the generally covariant scalar-tensor theory using the gauge recovering procedures. In order to ensure the resulting scalar-tensor theory to be ghostfree absolutely, i.e., no matter if the unitary gauge is accessible, a further covariant degeneracy/constrai…
The invariant projections of the energy-momentum tensors of Lagrangian densities for tensor fields over differentiable manifolds with contravariant and covariant affine connections and metrics [$(\bar{L}_n,g)$-spaces] are found by the use of an non-null (non-isotropic) contravariant vector field and its corresponding projective metrics. The notions of rest mass density, momentum density, energy current density and stress tensor are introduced as generalizations of these notions from the relativistic continuum media mechanics. The energy-momentum tensors are represented by means of the introduc…
After recapitulating the covariant formalism of equilibrium statistical mechanics in special relativity and extending it to the case of a non-vanishing spin tensor, we show that the relativistic stress-energy tensor at thermodynamical equilibrium can be obtained from a functional derivative of the partition function with respect to the inverse temperature four-vector β. For usual thermodynamical equilibrium, the stress-energy tensor turns out to be the derivative of the relativistic thermodynamic potential current with respect to the four-vector β, i.e. T^{μν} = - \partial Φ^μ/\partial β_ν. Th…
The scalar-tensor theories have become popular recently in particular in connection with attempts to explain present accelerated expansion of the universe, but they have been considered as a natural extension of general relativity long time ago. The Horndeski scalar-tensor theory involving four invariantly defined Lagrangians is a natural choice since it implies field equations involving at most second derivatives. Following the formalisms of defining covariant global quantities and conservation laws for perturbations of spacetimes in standard general relativity we extend these methods to the …
The basic characteristics of the covariant chiral current $<J_μ>$ and the covariant chiral energy-momentum tensor $<T_{μν}>$ are obtained from a chiral effective action. These results are used to justify the covariant boundary condition used in recent approaches \cite{Isowilczek,Isoumtwilczek,shailesh,shailesh2,Banerjee} of computing the Hawking flux from chiral gauge and gravitational anomalies. We also discuss a connection of our results with the conventional calculation of nonchiral currents and stress tensors in different (Unruh, Hartle-Hawking and Boulware) states.
To understand the coupling behavior of the spinor with spacetime, the explicit form of the energy-momentum tensor of the spinor in curved spacetime is important. This problem seems to be overlooked for a long time. In this paper we derive the explicit form of energy momentum tensors and display some equivalent but simple forms of the covariant derivatives for both the Weyl spinor and the Dirac bispinor in curved spacetime.

We calculate the covariant one-loop quantum gravitational effective action for a scalar field model inspired by the recently proposed nonminimal natural inflation model. Our calculation is perturbative, in the sense that the effective action is evaluated in orders of background field, around a Minkowski background. The effective potential has been evaluated taking into account the finite corrections. An order-of-magnitude estimate of the one-loop corrections reveals that gravitational and non-gravitational corrections have same or comparable magnitudes.
We present an explicit averaging formula in lowest order. Besides an arbitrary smearing function it contains two integrals of this function. This is necessary in order to achieve covariance. There is no need to solve any equations. In three dimensions the same averaging formula yields a covariant averaging of the Einstein tensor and thus of the field equations. We also present a simple extension to static perturbations in four dimensions. Various further extensions of the formalism appear possible.
We introduce a covariant non-commutative deformation of 3+1-dimensional conformal field theory. The deformation depends on a short-distance scale \ell_p, and thus breaks scale invariance, but preserves all space-time isometries. The non-commutative algebra is defined on space-times with non-zero constant curvature, i.e. dS_4 or AdS_4. The construction makes essential use of the representation of CFT tensor operators as polynomials in an auxiliary polarization tensor. The polarization tensor takes active part in the non-commutative algebra, which for dS_4 takes the form of so(5,1), while for Ad…
A new approach to expanding the "Stückelbergized" fiducial metric in a covariant manner is developed. The idea is to consider the curved 4-dimensional space as a codimension-one hypersurface embedded in a 5-dimensional Minkowski bulk, in which the 5-dimensional Goldstone modes can be defined as usual. After solving one constraint among the five 5-dimensional Goldstone modes and projecting onto the 4-dimensional hypersurface, we are able to express the "Stückelbergized" fiducial metric in terms of the 4-dimensional Goldstone modes as well as 4-dimensional curvature quantities. We also compared …

We generalize and simplify an earlier approach. In three dimensions we present the most general averaging formula in lowest order which respects the requirements of covariance. It involves a bitensor, made up of a basis of six tensors, and contains three arbitrary functions, which are only restricted by their behavior near the origin. The averaging formula can also be applied to the Einstein tensor. If one of the functions is put equal to zero one has the pleasant property that the Einstein tensor of the averaged metric is identical to the averaged Einstein tensor. We also present a simple cov…
We derive the Noether identities and the conservation laws for general gravitational models with arbitrarily interacting matter and gravitational fields. These conservation laws are used for the construction of the covariant equations of motion for test bodies with minimal and nonminimal coupling.
We investigate invariant canonical transformations of a spatially covariant scalar-tensor theory of gravity, called the XG theory, by which the action or the Hamiltonian and the primary constraints keep their forms invariant. We derive the Hamiltonian in a non perturbative manner and complete the Hamiltonian analysis for all regions of the theory. We confirm that the theory has at most 3 degrees of freedom in all regions of the theory as long as the theory has the symmetry under the spatial diffeormorphism. Then, we derive the invariant canonical transformation by using the infinitesimal trans…
We give a fully covariant energy momentum stress tensor for the gravitational field which is easily physically motivated, and which leads to a very general derivation of the Einstein equation for gravity. We do not need to assume any property of the surce matter fields' energy momentum stress tensor other than symmetry. We give a physical motivation for this choice using laser light pressure. As a consequence of our derivation, the energy momentum stress tensor for the total source matter and fields must be divergence free, when spacetime is 4 dimensional. Moreoverr, if the total source matter…
We present a covariant derivation of the equations of motion for test bodies for a wide class of gravitational theories with nonminimal coupling, encompassing a general interaction via the complete set of 9 parity-even curvature invariants. The equations of motion for spinning test bodies in such theories are explicitly derived by means of Synge's expansion technique. Our findings generalize previous results in the literature and allow for a direct comparison to the general relativistic equations of motion of pole-dipole test bodies.
1+3 covariant approach to cosmological perturbation theory often employs the electric part ($E_{ab}$), the magnetic part ($H_{ab}$) of the Weyl tensor or the shear tensor ($σ_{ab}$) in a phenomenological description of gravitational waves. The Cotton-York tensor is rarely mentioned in connection with gravitational waves in this approach. This tensor acts as a source for the magnetic part of the Weyl tensor which should not be neglected in studies of gravitational waves in the 1+3 formalism. The tensor is only mentioned in connection with studies of 'silent model' but even there the connection …
It is known that the covariant graviton two-point function in de Sitter spacetime is infrared divergent for some choices of gauge parameters. On the other hand it is also known that there are no infrared divergences requiring an infrared cutoff for the physical graviton two-point function for this spacetime in the transverse-traceless-synchronous gauge in the global coordinate system. We show in this paper that the covariant graviton Wightman two-point function with two gauge parameters is equivalent to the physical one in the global coordinate system in the sense that they produce the same tw…
We analytically derive the covariant form of the Riemann (curvature) tensor for homogeneous Metric-Affine Cosmologies. That is, we present, in a Cosmological setting, the most general covariant form of the full Riemann tensor including also its non-Riemannian pieces which are associated to spacetime torsion and non-metricity. Having done so we also compute a list of the curvature tensor by-products such as Ricci tensor, homothetic curvature, Ricci scalar, Einstein tensor etc. Finally we derive the generalized Metric-Affine version of the usual Gauss-Bonnet density in this background and demons…
The Lagrangian formalism for tensor fields over differentiable manifolds with contravariant and covariant affine connections (whose components differ not only by sign) and metrics [$(\bar{L}_n,g)$-spaces] is considered. The functional variation and the Lie variation of a Lagrangian density, depending on components of tensor fields (with finite rank) and their first and second covariant derivatives are established. A variation operator is determined and the corollaries of its commutation relations with the covariant and the Lie differential operators are found. The canonical (common) method of …
The theory of spaces with different (not only by sign) contravariant and covariant affine connections and metrics [}$(\bar{L}_n,g)$\QTR{it}{-spaces] is worked out within the framework of the tensor analysis over differentiable manifolds and in a volume necessary for the further considerations of the kinematics of vector fields and the Lagrangian theory of tensor fields over}$(\bar{L}_n,g)$\QTR{it}{-spaces. The possibility of introducing affine connections (whose components differ not only by sign) for contravariant and covariant tensor fields over differentiable manifolds with finite dimension…
We determine the retarded and advanced Green's functions and Hadamard parametrices in curved spacetimes for linearized massive and massless gauge bosons and linearized Einstein gravity with a cosmological constant in general linear covariant gauges. These vector and tensor parametrices contain additional singular terms compared with their Feynman/de Donder-gauge counterpart. We also give explicit recursion relations for the Hadamard coefficients, and indicate their generalization to $n$ dimensions. Furthermore, we express the divergence and trace of the vector and tensor Green's functions in t…
The present paper continues the work of the authors [arXiv:1306.6887 [gr-qc]]. Here, we study generally covariant metric-torsion theories of gravity presented more concretely, setting that their Lagrangians are \emph{manifestly} generally covariant scalars. It is assumed that Lagrangians depend on metric tensor, curvature tensor, torsion tensor and its first and second covariant derivatives, besides, on an arbitrary set of other tensor (matter) fields and their first and second covariant derivatives. Thus, both the standard minimal coupling with the Riemann-Cartan geometry and non-minimal coup…
The Covariant Canonical Gauge theory of Gravity is generalized by including at the Lagrangian level all possible quadratic curvature invariants. In this approach, the covariant Hamiltonian principle and the canonical transformation framework are applied to derive a Palatini type gauge theory of gravity. The metric $g_{μν}$, the affine connection $γ\indices{^λ_{μν}}$ and their respective conjugate momenta, $k^{μνσ}$ and $q\indices{_η^{αξβ}}$ tensors, are the independent field components describing the gravity. The metric is the basic dynamical field, and the connection is the gauge field. The t…
We find a covariant completion of the flat-space multi-galileon theory, preserving second-order field equations. We then generalise this to arrive at an enlarged class of second order theories describing multiple scalars and a single tensor, and conjecture that these are a multi-scalar version of Horndeski's most general scalar-tensor theory.
We develop and apply a fully covariant 1+3 electromagnetic analogy for gravity. The free gravitational field is covariantly characterized by the Weyl gravito-electric and gravito-magnetic spatial tensor fields, whose dynamical equations are the Bianchi identities. Using a covariant generalization of spatial vector algebra and calculus to spatial tensor fields, we exhibit the covariant analogy between the tensor Bianchi equations and the vector Maxwell equations. We identify gravitational source terms, couplings and potentials with and without electromagnetic analogues. The nonlinear vacuum Bia…
In this paper we develop a formalism to describe a superfluid in a gravitational background. This formalism is based on a covariant generalization of the field description for a superconductor in terms of a U(1) spontaneous symmetry breaking. We study the stability of the solutions for a vortexless fluid and the force acting on vortices in the fluid, which is a generalization of the well-known flat space-time Magnus force. To clarify the development we include the explicit discussion of two particular cases, one of them of astrophysical interest.
After a short critique of the Minkowski formulae for the electromagnetic constitutive laws in moving media, we argue that in actual fact the problem of Lorentz-covariant electromagnetic response theory is automatically solved within the framework of modern microscopic electrodynamics of materials. As an illustration, we first rederive the well-known relativistic transformation behavior of the microscopic conductivity tensor. Thereafter, we deduce from first principles the transformation law of the wavevector- and frequency-dependent dielectric tensor under Lorentz boost transformations.
We present a study of the so called relaxed field equations of general relativity in terms of a decomposition of the metric; which is designed to deal with the notion of particles. Several known results are generalized to a coordinate free covariant discussion. We apply our techniques to the study of a particle up to second order.
A covariant Poisson bracket and an associated covariant star product in the sense of deformation quantization are defined on the algebra of tensor-valued differential forms on a symplectic manifold, as a generalization of similar structures that were recently defined on the algebra of (scalar-valued) differential forms. A covariant star product of arbitrary smooth tensor fields is obtained as a special case. Finally, we study covariant star products on a more general Poisson manifold with a linear connection, first for smooth functions and then for smooth tensor fields of any type. Some observ…
We present a new covariant and gauge-invariant perturbation formalism for dealing with spacetimes having spherical symmetry (or some preferred spatial direction) in the background, and apply it to the case of gravitational wave propagation in a Schwarzschild black hole spacetime. The 1+3 covariant approach is extended to a `1+1+2 covariant sheet' formalism by introducing a radial unit vector in addition to the timelike congruence, and decomposing all covariant quantities with respect to this. The background Schwarzschild solution is discussed and a covariant characterisation is given. We give …
Thermodynamics plays an important role in gravitational theories. It is a principle independent of the gravitational dynamics, and there is still no rigorous proof to show that it is consistent with the dynamical principle. We consider a self-gravitating perfect fluid system in a general diffeomorphism-covariant purely gravitational theory. Based on the Noether charge method proposed by Iyer and Wald, considering static off/on-shell variational configurations which satisfy the gravitational constraint equation, we rigorously prove that the extrema of the total entropy of perfect fluid inside a…
From a previous paper where we proposed a description of general relativity within the gravito-electromagnetic limit, we propose an alternative modified gravitational theory. As in the former version, we analyze the vector and tensor equations of motion, the gravitational continuity equation, the conservation of the energy, the energy-momentum tensor, the field tensor, and the constraints concerning these fields. The Lagrangian formulation is also exhibited as an unified and simple formulation that will be useful for future investigation.
We develop a 3+1+1 covariant formalism with cosmological and astrophysical applications. First we give the evolution and constraint equations both on the brane and off-brane in terms of 3-space covariant kinematical, gravito-electro-magnetic (Weyl) and matter variables. We discuss the junction conditions across the brane in terms of the new variables. Then we establish a closure condition for the equations on the brane. We also establish the connection of this formalism with isotropic and anisotropic cosmological brane-worlds. Finally we derive a new brane solution in the framework of our form…
Second-order tensor modes induced by nonlinear gravity are a key component of the cosmological background of gravitational waves. A detection of this background would allow us to probe the primordial power spectrum at otherwise inaccessible scales. Usually, the energy density of these gravitational waves is studied within perturbation theory in a particular gauge -- a connection between our physical spacetime and a fictitious background. It is a widely recognized issue that the second-order, scalar-induced gravitational waves are gauge dependent. This issue arises because they are not well-def…
The direct discovery of gravitational waves (GWs) from the coalescence of compact binary components by the LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA Collaboration provides an unprecedented opportunity for exploring the underlying theory of gravity that drives the coalescence process in the strong and highly dynamical field regime of gravity. In this paper, we consider the observational effects of spatial covariant gravities on the propagation of GWs in the cosmological background and obtain the observational constraints on coupling coefficients in the action of spatial covariant gravities from GW observations. We firs…
We present a covariant formulation for constructing general quadratic actions for cosmological perturbations, invariant under a given set of gauge symmetries for a given field content. This approach allows us to analyse scalar, vector and tensor perturbations at the same time in a straightforward manner. We apply the procedure to diffeomorphism invariant single-tensor, scalar-tensor and vector-tensor theories and show explicitly the full covariant form of the quadratic actions in such cases, in addition to the actions determining the evolution of vector and tensor perturbations. We also discus…
