The results of studies of melting and crystallization processes in Bi-Ge layered film system are presented. These systems were prepared by subsequent condensation of components in vacuum. It has been shown that the melting temperature in system under study decreases with the decrease of Bi film thickness. The differential technique used for melting temperature registration enables us to measure the value of eutectic temperature $T_ε$ = 542 K in the system. The values of supercooling upon crystallization ($ΔT$ = 93 K) and wetting angle ($θ= 68^\circ$) have been determined for Bi islands on amorphous Ge substrate.
We present a simple unifying model for crystallization and melting temperatures by showing that homogeneous nucleation and phase transformations driven by thickening of pre-existing surface layers are limiting conditions of the more general heterogeneous nucleation case. Furthermore, to a first approximation all these processes can be described by an extended classical nucleation theory. The model can also be applied to phase transition temperatures in confined volumes, provided reliable values for the interfacial tensions within the systems are determinable. The expected melting and crystalli…

Metals in amorphous state are promising for the use as structural materials due to their superior properties related to the absence of grain boundaries and dislocations.Obtaining the amorphous state requires quenching with a high cooling rate.In conventional technologies, this is the reason for a considerable size limitation hindering application of amorphous alloys.Additive manufacturing (AM) is free of the size limitation. The so-called bulk metallic glass (BMG) alloys have extremely low critical cooling rates and can be used in AM. Recent studies on AM from Zr-based BMGs by selective laser me…
We carry out molecular dynamics (MD) and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations to characterize nucleation in liquid clusters of 600 Lennard-Jones particles over a broad range of temperatures. We use the formalism of mean first-passage times to determine the rate and find that Classical Nucleation Theory (CNT) predicts the rate quite well, even when employing simple modelling of crystallite shape, chemical potential, surface tension and particle attachment rate, down to the temperature where the droplet loses metastability and crystallization proceeds through growth-limited nucleation in an unequilibrat…
Molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe$_2$) has attracted considerable interest for nanoelectronic, optoelectronic, spintronic, and valleytronic applications because of its modest band gap, high field-effect mobility, large spin-orbit-coupling splitting, and tunable 1T'/2H phases. However, synthesizing large-area, high-quality MoTe$_2$ remains challenging. The complicated design of gas-phase reactant transport and reaction for chemical vapor deposition or tellurization is nontrivial because of the weak bonding energy between Mo and Te. Here, we report a new method for depositing MoTe$_2$ that entails us…
We report observation of crystallization of the glass-forming binary Lennard-Jones liquid first used by Wahnström [G. Wahnström, Phys. Rev. A 44, 3752 (1991)]. Molecular dynamics simulations of the metastable liquid on a timescale of microseconds were performed. The liquid crystallized spontaneously. The crystal structure was identified as MgZn_2. Formation of transient crystallites is observed in the liquid. The crystallization is investigate at different temperatures and compositions. At high temperature the rate of crystallite formation is the limiting factor, while at low temperature the l…
We report an in-situ microbeam grazing incidence X-ray scattering study of 2,7-dioctyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (C$_8$-BTBT) organic semiconductor thin film deposition by hollow pen writing. Multiple transient phases are observed during the crystallization for substrate temperatures up to $\approx$93$^\circ$C. The layered smectic liquid-crystalline phase of C$_8$-BTBT initially forms and preceedes inter-layer ordering, followed by a transient crystalline phase for temperature $>$60$^\circ$C, and ultimately the stable phase. Based on these results, we demonstrate a method to produc…
A few experiments have already detected the presence of icosahedral superclusters in undercooled liquids, confirming a possible homogeneous nucleation of such entities as suggested by Franck. These superclusters survive in melts above the crystal melting temperature Tm because all their surface atoms have the same fusion heat as their core atoms and are melted by homogeneous nucleation of liquid in their core, depending on overheating time and temperature. In complete contrast to current ideas, a long time is necessary to melt them and to attain the thermodynamic equilibrium above Tm. They act…

The dynamic properties of liquid phase-change materials (PCMs), such as viscosity $η$ and atomic self-diffusion coefficients D, play an essential role in ultrafast phase switching behavior of novel non-volatile phase-change memory applications, as they are intimately related to crystallization kinetics and phase stabilities. To connect $η$ to D, the Stokes-Einstein relation (SER) is commonly assumed to be valid at high temperatures near or above the melting temperature $T_{m}$ and is frequently employed for assessing liquid fragility (or crystal growth velocity) of technologically important PC…
Quasi-two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides are a key platform for exploring emergent nanoscale phenomena arising from complex interactions. Access to the underlying degrees-of-freedom on their natural time scales motivates the use of advanced ultrafast probes sensitive to self-organised atomic-scale patterns. Here, we report the first ultrafast investigation of TaTe2, which exhibits unique charge and lattice trimer order characterised by a transition upon cooling from stripe-like chains into a $(3 \times 3)$ superstructure of trimer clusters. Utilising MeV-scale ultrafast electron …
Hybrid glasses connect emerging fields of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with the glass-formation, amorphization, and melting processes of these structurally diverse and chemically versatile systems. Most zeolites, including MOFs, amorphize around the glass transition, devitrifying and then melting at much higher temperatures. The relationship between the two processes has so far not been investigated. Herein we show how heating first results in a low density perfect glass, following an order-order transition, leading to a super-strong liquid of low fragility that dynamically controls MOF col…
X-ray measurements reveal a crystalline monolayer at the surface of the eutectic liquid Au_{82}Si_{18}, at temperatures above the alloy's melting point. Surface-induced atomic layering, the hallmark of liquid metals, is also found below the crystalline monolayer. The layering depth, however, is threefold greater than that of all liquid metals studied to date. The crystallinity of the surface monolayer is notable, considering that AuSi does not form stable bulk crystalline phases at any concentration and temperature and that no crystalline surface phase has been detected thus far in any pure li…
The melting and crystallization of Al50Ni50} are studied by means of molecular dynamics computer simulations, using a potential of the embedded atom type to model the interactions between the particles. Systems in a slab geometry are simulated where the B2 phase of AlNi in the middle of an elongated simulation box is separated by two planar interfaces from the liquid phase, thereby considering the (100) crystal orientation. By determining the temperature dependence of the interface velocity, an accurate estimate of the melting temperature is provided. The value k=0.0025 m/s/K for the kinetic g…
Sb-doped Bi2Te3 is known since the 1950s as the best thermoelectric material for near-room temperature operation. Improvements in material performance are expected from nanostructuring procedures. We present a straightforward and fast method to synthesize already nanostructured pellets that show an enhanced ZT due to a remarkably low thermal conductivity and unusually high Seebeck coefficient for a nominal composition optimized for arc-melting: Bi0.35Sb1.65Te3. We provide a detailed structural analysis of the Bi2-xSbxTe3 series based on neutron powder diffraction as a function of composition a…
Spontaneous C4-symmetry breaking phases are ubiquitous in layered quantum materials, and often compete with other phases such as superconductivity. Preferential suppression of the symmetry broken phases by light has been used to explain non-equilibrium light induced superconductivity, metallicity, and the creation of metastable states. Key to understanding how these phases emerge is understanding how C4 symmetry is restored. A leading approach is based on time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory, which explains the coherence response seen in many systems. However, we show that, for the case of th…
Below the melting temperature $T_m$ crystals are the stable phase of typical elemental or molecular systems. However, cooling down a liquid below $T_m$, crystallization is anything but inevitable. The liquid can be supercooled, eventually forming a glass below the glass transition temperature $T_g$. Despite their long lifetimes and the presence of strong barriers that produces an apparent stability, supercooled liquids and glasses remain intrinsically metastable state and thermodynamically unstable towards the crystal. Here we investigated the isothermal crystallization kinetics of the prototy…
The use of laser with a Gaussian-beam profile is frequently adopted in attempts of crystallizing non-single-crystal thin films; however, it merely results in the formation of poly-crystal thin films. In this paper, selective area crystallization of non-single-crystal copper(II) oxide (CuO) is described. The crystallization is induced by laser, laser-induced crystallization, with a beam profile in the shape of chevron. The crystallization is verified by the exhibition of a transition from a non-single-crystal phase consisting of small 100 nm x 100 nm grains of CuO to a single-crystal phase of c…

Segregation at surfaces of metal-covalent binary liquids is often non-classical and in extreme cases such as AuSi, the surface crystallizes above the melting point. In this study, we employ atomic-scale computational frameworks to study the surface crystallization of AuSi films and droplets as a function of composition, temperature and size. For temperatures in the range $T_s^\ast=765-780$K above the melting point $(T_s^\ast\approx1.3\,T_m)$, both thin film and droplet surfaces undergo a first order transition, from a 2D Au$_2$Si crystalline phase to a laterally disordered yet stratified layer…
