We extend the variational approach to regularity for optimal transport maps initiated by Goldman and the first author to the case of general cost functions. Our main result is an $ε$-regularity result for optimal transport maps between Hölder continuous densities slightly more quantitative than the result by De Philippis-Figalli. One of the new contributions is the use of almost-minimality: if the cost is quantitatively close to the Euclidean cost function, a minimizer for the optimal transport problem with general cost is an almost-minimizer for the one with quadratic cost. This further highlights the connection between our variational approach and De Giorgi's strategy for $ε$-regularity of minimal surfaces.
We prove the optimal regularity for some class of vector-valued variational inequalities with gradient constraints. We also give a new proof for the optimal regularity of some scalar variational inequalities with gradient constraints. In addition, we prove that some class of variational inequalities with gradient constraints are equivalent to an obstacle problem, both in the scalar and vector-valued case.
We study the regularity of minima of scalar variational integrals of $p$-growth, $1<p<\infty$, in the Heisenberg group and prove the Hölder continuity of horizontal gradient of minima.
We prove regularity properties in the vector valued case for minimizers of variational integrals of the form $$A(u) = \int_ΩA(x,u,Du) dx$$ where the integrand $A(x,u,Du)$ is not necessarily continuous respect to the variable $x,$ grows polinomially like $|ξ|^p,$ $p \geq 2.$
We present a Krylov-Safonov theory approach for the Hölder regularity of viscosity solutions to non-variational porous media type equations. We explore the peculiarity of this type of problem: either the equation falls in a uniformly elliptic regime or the eikonal mechanism takes care of the regularity. Our techniques are based on sliding paraboloids resulting in an ABP-type measure estimate. By combining such estimates, a diminishing of oscillation property is available, resulting in a regularity control in Hölder spaces.
We study the regularity of solutions to a nonlocal variational problem, which is related to the image denoising model, and we show that, in two dimensions, minimizers have the same Hölder regularity as the original image. More precisely, if the datum is (locally) $β$-Hölder continuous for some $β\in (1-s,\,1]$, where $s \in (0,1)$ is a parameter related to the nonlocal operator, we prove that the solution is also $β$-Hölder continuous.
We provide a new proof of the known partial regularity result for the optimal transportation map (Brenier map) between two sets. Contrary to the existing regularity theory for the Monge-Amp{è}re equation, which is based on the maximum principle, our approach is purely variational. By constructing a competitor on the level of the Eulerian (Benamou-Brenier) formulation, we show that locally, the velocity is close to the gradient of a harmonic function provided the transportation cost is small. We then translate back to the Lagrangian description and perform a Campanato iteration to obtain an $ε$…
We prove $C^{1,ν}$ regularity for local minimizers of the \oh{multi-phase} energy: \begin{flalign*} w \mapsto \int_Ω\snr{Dw}^{p}+a(x)\snr{Dw}^{q}+b(x)\snr{Dw}^{s} \ dx, \end{flalign*} under sharp assumptions relating the couples $(p,q)$ and $(p,s)$ to the Hölder exponents of the modulating coefficients $a(\cdot)$ and $b(\cdot)$, respectively.
This paper describes recent results obtained in collaboration with M. Huesmann and F. Otto on the regularity of optimal transport maps. The main result is a quantitative version of the well-known fact that the linearization of the Monge-Amp{è}re equation around the identity is the Poisson equation. We present two applications of this result. The first one is a variational proof of the partial regularity theorem of Figalli and Kim and the second is the rigorous validation of some predictions made by Carraciolo and al. on the structure of the optimal transport maps in matching problems.
We prove the optimal $W^{2,\infty}$ regularity for variational problems with convex gradient constraints. We do not assume any regularity of the constraints; so the constraints can be nonsmooth, and they need not be strictly convex. When the domain is smooth enough, we show that the optimal regularity holds up to the boundary. In this process, we also characterize the set of singular points of the viscosity solutions to some Hamilton-Jacobi equations. Furthermore, we obtain an explicit formula for the second derivative of these viscosity solutions; and we show that the second derivatives satis…
We study boundary regularity of maps from two-dimensional domains into manifolds which are critical with respect to a generic conformally invariant variational functional and which, at the boundary, enter perpendicularly into a support manifold. For example, harmonic maps, or $H$-surfaces, with a partially free boundary condition. In the interior it is known, by the celebrated work of Riviere, that these maps satisfy a system with an antisymmetric potential, from which one can derive regularity of the solution. We show that these maps satisfy along the boundary a system with a nonlocal antisym…
In this paper we prove the Lipschitz regularity for local minimizers of convex variational integrals of the form \[ \mathfrak{F}( v, Ω)= \int_Ω \! F(x, Dv(x)) \, dx, \] where, for ${n > 2}$ and $N\ge 1$, $Ω$ is a bounded open set in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $u \in W^{1,1}(Ω, \mathbb{R}^N)$ and the energy density $F:Ω\times \mathbb{R}^{N \times n}\to \mathbb{R}$ satisfies the so called variable growth conditions. The main novelty of the paper is that we assume an almost critical regularity in the Orlicz Sobolev setting for the energy density as a function of the $x$ variable.
We prove global Lipschitz regularity for a wide class of convex variational integrals among all functions in $W^{1,1}$ with prescribed (sufficiently regular) boundary values, which are not assumed to satisfy any geometrical constraint (as for example bounded slope condition). Furthermore, we do not assume any restrictive assumption on the geometry of the domain and the result is valid for all sufficiently smooth domains. The result is achieved with a suitable approximation of the functional together with a new construction of appropriate barrier functions.
We consider critical points $u:Ω\to N$ of the bi-energy \[ \int_Ω|Δu|^2\,d x, \] where $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^m$ is a bounded smooth domain of dimension $m\ge 5$ and $N\subset\mathbb{R}^L$ a compact submanifold without boundary. More precisely, we consider variationally biharmonic maps $u\in W^{2,2}(Ω,N)$, which are defined as critical points of the bi-energy that satisfy a certain stationarity condition up to the boundary. For weakly convergent sequences of variationally biharmonic maps, we demonstrate that the only obstruction that can prevent the strong compactness up to the boundary is the pr…
We derive a boundary monotonicity formula for a class of biharmonic maps with Dirichlet boundary conditions. A monotonicity formula is crucial in the theory of partial regularity in super-critical dimensions. As a consequence of such a boundary monotonicity formula, one is able to show partial regularity for variationally biharmonic maps and full boundary regularity for minimizing biharmonic maps.
We formulate the half-wave maps problem with target $S^2$ and prove global regularity in sufficiently high spatial dimensions for a class of small critical data in Besov spaces.
We prove full boundary regularity for minimizing biharmonic maps with smooth Dirichlet boundary conditions. Our result, similarly as in the case of harmonic maps, is based on the nonexistence of nonconstant boundary tangent maps. With the help of recently derivated boundary monotonicity formula for minimizing biharmonic maps by Altuntas we prove compactness at the boundary following Scheven's interior argument. Then we combine those results with the conditional partial boundary regularity result for stationary biharmonic maps by Gong--Lamm--Wang.
Variational inequalities with thin obstacles and Signorini-type boundary conditions are classical problems in the calculus of variations, arising in numerous applications. In the linear case many refined results are known, while in the nonlinear setting our understanding is still at a preliminary stage. In this paper we prove $C^1$ regularity for the solutions to a general class of quasi-linear variational inequalities with thin obstacles and $C^{1, α}$ regularity for variational inequalities under Signorini-type conditions on the boundary of a domain.
In this paper, we consider weak solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equation to a variational energy functional modeling the geometrically nonlinear Cosserat micropolar elasticity of continua in dimension three, which is a system coupling between the Poisson equation and the equation of $p$-harmonic maps ($2\le p\le 3$). We show that if a weak solutions is stationary, then its singular set is discrete for $2<p<3$ and has zero $1$-dimensional Hausdorff measure for $p=2$. If, in addition, it is a stable-stationary weak solution, then it is regular everywhere when $p\in [2, \frac{32}{15}]$.
We establish local higher integrability and differentiability results for minimizers of variational integrals $$ \mathfrak{F}(v,Ω) = \int_Ω /! F(Dv(x)) \, dx $$ over $W^{1,p}$--Sobolev mappings $u \colon Ω\subset {\mathbb R}^n \to {\mathbb R}^N$ satisfying a Dirichlet boundary condition. The integrands $F$ are assumed to be autonomous, convex and of $(p,q)$ growth, but are otherwise not subjected to any further structure conditions, and we consider exponents in the range $1<p \leq q < p^{\ast}$, where $p^{\ast}$ denotes the Sobolev conjugate exponent of $p$.
The aim of this short note is to extend the recent variational proof of partial regularity for optimal transport maps to the case of continuous densities.
Motivated by Ball and Majumdar's modification of Landau-de Gennes model for nematic liquid crystals, we study energy-minimizer $Q$ of a tensor-valued variational obstacle problem in a bounded 3-D domain with prescribed boundary data. The energy functional is designed to blow up as $Q$ approaches the obstacle. Under certain assumptions, especially on blow-up profile of the singular bulk potential, we prove higher interior regularity of $Q$, and show that the contact set of $Q$ is either empty, or small with characterization of its Hausdorff dimension. We also prove boundary partial regularity o…
We prove that, for general cost functions on $\mathbb{R}^n$, or for the cost $d^2/2$ on a Riemannian manifold, optimal transport maps between smooth densities are always smooth outside a closed singular set of measure zero.
We prove a quantification result for harmonic maps with free boundary from arbitrary Riemannian surfaces into the unit ball of ${\mathbb R}^{n+1}$ with bounded energy. This generalizes results obtained by Da Lio on the disc.
This article addresses the regularity issue for stationary or minimizing fractional harmonic maps into spheres of order $s\in(0,1)$ in arbitrary dimensions. It is shown that such fractional harmonic maps are $C^\infty$ away from a small closed singular set. The Hausdorff dimension of the singular set is also estimated in terms of $s\in(0,1)$ and the stationarity/minimality assumption.
We prove the uniqueness of solutions to Dirichlet problem for p-harmonic maps with images in a small geodesic ball of the target manifold. As a consequence, we show that such maps have Hoelder continuous derivatives. This gives an extension of a result by S. Hildebrandt et al concerning harmonic maps.
We mainly discuss superquadratic minimization problems for splitting-type variational integrals on a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^2$ and prove higher integrability of the gradient up to the boundary by incorporating an appropriate weight-function measuring the distance of the solution to the boundary data. As a corollary, the local Hölder coefficient with respect to some improved Hölder continuity is quantified in terms of the function ${\rm dist}(\cdot,\partial Ω)$. The results are extended to anisotropic problems without splitting structure under natural growth and elliptici…
In this paper we develop a boundary $\varepsilon$-regularity theory for optimal transport maps between bounded open sets with $C^{1,α}$-boundary. Our main result asserts sharp $C^{1,α}$-regularity of transport maps at the boundary in form of a linear estimate under certain assumptions: The main quantitative assumptions are that the local nondimensionalized transport cost is small and that the boundaries are locally almost flat in $C^{1,α}$. Our method is completely variational and builds on the recently developed interior regularity theory.
We prove that the half-wave maps problem on $\mathbb{R}^{4+1}$ with target $S^2$ is globally well-posed for smooth initial data which are small in the critical $l^1$ based Besov space. This is a formal analogue of the result for wave maps by Tataru.
We prove that manifold constrained $p(x)$-harmonic maps are $C^{1,β}$-regular outside a set of zero $n$-dimensional Lebesgue's measure, for some $β\in (0,1)$. We also provide an estimate from above of the Hausdorff dimension of the singular set.
For minimizers in a geometrically nonlinear Cosserat model for micropolar elasticity of continua, we prove interior Hölder regularity, up to isolated singular points that may be possible if the exponent $p$ from the model is $2$ or in $(\frac{32}{15},3)$. The obstacle to full continuity turns out to be the existence of certain minimizing homogeneous $p$-harmonic maps to $S^3$. For those, we slightly improve existing regularity theorems in order to achieve our result on the Cosserat model.
In dimensions greater than or equal to 3, we prove that the Schroedinger map initial-value problem is globally well-posed for small data in the critical Besov space.
In this article we study functionals of the type considered in \cite{HS21}, i.e. $$ J(v):=\int_{B_1} A(x,u)|\nabla u|^2 +f(x,u)u+ Q(x)λ(u)\,dx $$ here $A(x,u)= A_+(x)χ_{\{u>0\}}+A_-(x) χ_{\{u<0\}}$, $f(x,u)= f_+(x)χ_{\{u>0\}}+f_-(x) χ_{\{u<0\}}$ and $λ(x,u) = λ_+(x) χ_{\{u>0\}} + λ_-(x) χ_{\{u\le 0\}}$. We prove the optimal $C^{0,1^-}$ regularity of minimizers of the functional indicated above (with precise Hölder estimates) when the coefficients $A_{\pm}$ are continuous functions and $μ\le A_{\pm}\le \frac{1}μ$ for some $0<μ<1$, with $f \in L^N(B_1)$ and $Q$ bounded. We do this by presenting …
We introduce n/p-harmonic maps as critical points of E(v) the Lp-Norm of the alpha-laplacian of v, where pointwise v maps Rn into a sphere, and alpha = n/p. This energy combines the non-local behaviour of the fractional harmonic maps introduced by Riviere and the first author with the degenerate arguments of the n-laplacian. In this setting, we will prove Holder continuity.
We prove the regularity of weak 1/2-harmonic maps from the real line into a sphere. The key point in our result is first a formulation of the 1/2-harmonic map equation in the form of a non-local linear Schrödinger type equation with a 3-terms commutators in the right-hand-side . We then establish a sharp estimate for these 3-commutators.
Using the harmonic map heat flow and the function spaces of Tataru and the author, we establish a large data local well-posedness result in the energy class for wave maps from two-dimensional Minkowski space $\R^{1+2}$ to hyperbolic spaces $\H^m$. This is one of the five claims required in an earlier paper in this series to prove global regularity for such wave maps.
We prove that the solutions to the initial-value problem for 2-dimensional Schrödinger maps are unique in $C_tL_x^{\infty} \cap L_t^{\infty} (\dot{H}^1_x\cap \dot{H}^2_x)$. For the proof, we follow McGahagan's argument with improving its technical part, combining Yudovich's argument.
Existence and regularity of minimizers for a geometric variational problem is shown. The variational integral models an energy contribution of the interface between two immiscible fluids in the presence of surfactants and includes a Helfrich type contribution, a Frank type contribution and a coupling term between the orientation of the surfactants and the curvature of the interface. Analytical results are proven in a one--dimensional situation for curves.
We consider the polar factorization of vector valued mappings introduced by Y. Brenier. In the case of a family of mappings depending on a parameter. We investigate the regularity with respect to this parameter of the terms of the polar factorization by constructing some a priori bounds. To do so, we consider the linearization of the associated Monge-Ampere equation which we view as a conservation law.
We prove continuity on domains up to the boundary for n/2-polyharmonic maps into manifolds. Technically, we show how to adapt Helein's direct approach to the fractional setting. This extends a remark by the author that this is possible in the setting of Riviere's famous regularity result for critical points of conformally invariant variational functionals. Moreover, pointwise behavior for the involved three-commutators is established. Continuity up to the boundary is then obtained via an adaption of Hildebrandt and Kaul's technique to the non-local setting.
Using the harmonic map heat flow, we construct an energy class for wave maps $ϕ$ from two-dimensional Minkowski space $\R^{1+2}$ to hyperbolic spaces $\H^m$, and then show (conditionally on a large data well-posedness claim for such wave maps) that no stationary, travelling, self-similar, or degenerate wave maps exist in this energy class. These results form three of the five claims required in our earlier paper (arXiv:0805.4666) to prove global regularity for such wave maps. (The conditional claim of large data well-posedness is one of the remaining claims required in that paper.)
We continue the analysis of some modifications of the total variation image inpainting method formulated on the space $BV(Ω)^M$ in the sense that we generalize the main results of [32] to the case that a more general data fitting term is involved. As in [32] we deal with vector-valued images, we do not impose any structure condition on our density $F$ and the dimension of the domain $Ω$ is arbitrary. Precisely we discuss existence of generalized solutions of the corresponding variational problem and we will also pass to the associated dual variational problem for which we show unique solvabili…
