Dai, Hom, Stoffregen and Truong defined a family of concordance invariants $φ_j$. The example of a knot with zero Upsilon invariant but nonzero epsilon invariant previously given by Hom also has nonzero phi invariant. We show there are infinitely many such knots that are linearly independent in the smooth concordance group. In the opposite direction, we build infinite families of linearly independent knots with zero phi invariant but nonzero Upsilon invariant. We also give a recursive formula for the phi invariant of torus knots.
Hom gives an example of a knot with vanishing Upsilon invariant but nonzero epsilon invariant. We build more such knots that are linearly independent in the smooth concordance group.
The knot concordance invariant Upsilon, recently defined by Ozsvath, Stipsicz, and Szabo, takes values in the group of piecewise linear functions on the closed interval [0,2]. This paper presents a description of one approach to defining Upsilon and of proving its basic properties related to the knot 3-genus, 4-genus, and concordance genus.
Ozsvath-Stipsicz-Szabo recently defined a one-parameter family, upsilon of K at t, of concordance invariants associated to the knot Floer complex. We compare their invariant to the {-1, 0, 1}-valued concordance invariant epsilon, which is also associated to the knot Floer complex. In particular, we give an example of a knot K with upsilon uniformly equal to zero but epsilon non-zero.
To a region $C$ of the plane satisfying a suitable convexity condition we associate a knot concordance invariant $Υ^C$. For appropriate choices of the domain this construction gives back some known knot Floer concordance invariants like Rasmussen's $h_i$ invariants, and the Ozsv\' ath-Stipsicz-Szab\' o upsilon invariant. Furthermore, to three such regions $C$, $C^+$ and $C^- $ we associate invariants $Υ_{C^\pm, C}$ generalising Kim-Livingston secondary invariant. We show how to compute these invariants for some interesting classes of knots (including alternating and torus knots), and we use th…
We compare the smooth concordance invariants Upsilon, phi and epsilon. Previous work gave examples of knots with one of the Upsilon and phi invariants zero but the epsilon invariant nonzero. We build an infinite family of linearly independent knots with both the Upsilon and phi invariants zero but the epsilon invariant nonzero.
Using the theory of involutive Heegaard Floer knot theory developed by Hendricks-Manolescu, we define two involutive analogs of the Upsilon knot concordance invariant of Ozsvath-Stipsicz-Szabo. These involutive invariants are piecewise linear functions defined on the interval [0,2]. Each is a concordance invariant and provides bounds on the three-genus of a knot.
We give a sufficient condition using the Ozsváth-Stipsicz-Szabó concordance invariant Upsilon for the monodromy of the open book decomposition of a fibered knot to be right-veering. As an application, we generalize a result of Baker on ribbon concordances between fibered knots. Following Baker, we conclude that either fibered knots $K$ in $S^{3}$ satisfying that $Υ'(t) = -g(K)$ for some $t \in [0,1)$ are unique in their smooth concordance classes or there exists a counterexample to the Slice-Ribbon Conjecture.
The knot invariant Upsilon, defined by Ozsvath, Stipsicz, and Szabo, induces a homomorphism from the smooth knot concordance group to the group of piecewise linear functions on the interval [0,2]. Here we define a set of related secondary invariants, each of which assigns to a knot a piecewise linear function on [0,2]. These secondary invariants provide bounds on the genus and concordance genus of knots. Examples of knots for which Upsilon vanishes but which are detected by these secondary invariants are presented.
We extend the construction of upsilon-type invariants to null-homologous knots in rational homology three-spheres. By considering $m$-fold cyclic branched covers with $m$ a prime power, this extension provides new knot concordance invariants $Υ_m^C (K)$ of knots in $S^3$. We give computations of these invariants for some families of alternating knots and reprove some independence results in the smooth concordance group.
We construct smooth concordance invariants of knots which take the form of piecewise linear maps from [0,1] to R, one for each n greater than or equal to 2. These invariants arise from sl(n) knot cohomology. We verify some properties which are analogous to those of the invariant Upsilon (which arises from knot Floer homology), and some which differ. We make some explicit computations and give some topological applications. Further to this, we define a concordance invariant from equivariant sl(n) knot cohomology which subsumes many known concordance invariants arising from quantum knot cohomolo…
In this paper we construct an infinite family of knots with vanishing Upsilon invariant $Υ$, although their secondary Upsilon invariants $Υ^2$ show that they are linearly independent in the smooth knot concordance group. We also prove a conjecture in a paper by Allen.
A fibered concordance of knots, introduced by Harer, is a concordance between fibered knots that is well-behaved with respect to the fibrations. We consider semi-fibered concordance of two component ordered links $L=J \sqcup K$ with $J$ fibered. These are concordances that restrict to fibered concordances on the first component. Motivated by some examples of Gompf-Scharlemann-Thompson, we further limit our attention to those links $L$ where $K$ is "close to" a fiber of $J$. Such $L$ are studied with virtual covers, where a virtual knot $\upsilon$ is associated to $L$. We show that the concorda…
We give a formula of the Upsilon invariant of any L-space cable knot $K_{p,q}$ using $p,Υ_K$ and $Υ_{T_{p,q}}$. The integral value of the Upsilon invariant gives a ${\mathbb Q}$-valued knot concordance invariant. We compute the integral values for L-space iterated cable knots.
We study the effect of satellite operations on the Upsilon invariant of Ozsvath-Stipsicz-Szabo. We obtain results concerning when a knot and its satellites are independent; for example, we show that the set $\{D_{2^i,1}\}_{i=1}^\infty$ is a basis for an infinite rank summand of the group of smooth concordance classes of topologically slice knots, for D the positive clasped untwisted Whitehead double of any knot with positive tau-invariant, e.g. the right-handed trefoil. We also prove that the image of the Mazur satellite operator on the smooth knot concordance group contains an infinite rank s…
We define a filtration of the smooth concordance group based on the genus of representative knots. We use the Heegaard Floer epsilon and Upsilon invariants to prove the quotient groups with respect to this filtration are infinitely generated. Results are applied to three infinite families of topologically slice knots.
By considering a version of Khovanov homology incorporating both the Lee and $E(-1)$ differentials, we construct a $1$-parameter family of concordance homomorphisms similar to the Upsilon invariant from knot Floer homology. This invariant gives lower bounds on the slice genus and can be used to prove that certain infinite families of pretzel knots are linearly independent in the smooth concordance group.
Upsilon is a homomorphism on the smooth concordance group of knots defined by Ozsváth, Stipsicz and Szabó. In this paper, we define a generalization of upsilon for a family of embedded graphs in rational homolog spheres. We show that our invariant will induce a homomorphism on the homology cobordism group of homology cylinders, and present some applications. To define this invariant, we use tangle Floer homology. We lift relative gradings on tangle Floer homology to absolute gradings (for certain tangles) and prove a concatenation formula for it.
Given an L-space knot we show that its Upsilon function is the Legendre transform of a counting function equivalent to the d-invariants of its large surgeries. The unknotting obstruction obtained for the Upsilon function is, in the case of L-space knots, contained in the d-invariants of large surgeries. Generalizations apply for connected sums of L-space knots, which imply that the slice obstruction provided by Upsilon on the subgroup of concordance generated by L-space knots is no finer than that provided by the d-invariants.
Two Heegaard Floer knot complexes are called stably equivalent if an acyclic complex can be added to each complex to make them filtered chain homotopy equivalent. Hom showed that if two knots are concordant, then their knot complexes are stably equivalent. Invariants of stable equivalence include the concordance invariants $τ$, $\varepsilon$, and $Υ$. Feller and Krcatovich gave a relationship between the Upsilon invariants of torus knots. We use secondary Upsilon invariants defined by Kim and Livingston to show that these relations do not extend to stable equivalence.
We provide a framework for studying the interplay between concordance and positive mutation and identify some of the basic structures relating the two. The fundamental result in understanding knot concordance is the structure theorem proved by Levine: for n>1 there is an isomorphism phi from the concordance group C_n of knotted (2n-1)-spheres in S^{2n+1} to an algebraically defined group G_{+-}; furthermore, G__{+-} is isomorphic to the infinite direct sum Z^infty direct sum Z_2^infty direct sum Z_4^infty. It was a startling consequence of the work of Casson and Gordon that in the classical ca…
In this paper, we study the behavior of $Υ_K(t)$ under the cabling operation, where $Υ_K(t)$ is the knot concordance invariant defined by Ozsváth, Stipsicz, and Szabó, associated to a knot $K\subset S^3$. The main result is an inequality relating $Υ_K(t)$ and $Υ_{K_{p,q}}(t)$, which generalizes the inequalities of Hedden and Van Cott on the Ozsváth-Szabó $τ$-invariant. As applications, we give a computation of $Υ_{(T_{2,-3})_{2,2n+1}}(t)$ for $n\geq 8$, and we also show that the set of iterated $(p,1)$-cables of $Wh^{+}(T_{2,3})$ for any $p\geq 2$ span an infinite-rank summand of topologically…
It was recently proved by several authors that ribbon concordances induce injective maps in knot Floer homology, Khovanov homology, and the Heegaard Floer homology of the branched double cover. We give a simple proof of a similar statement in a more general setting, which includes knot Floer homology, Khovanov-Rozansky homologies, and all conic strong Khovanov-Floer theories. This gives a philosophical answer to the question of which aspects of a link TQFT make it injective under ribbon concordances.
We produce infinite families of knots $\{K^i\}_{i\geq 1}$ for which the set of cables $\{K^i_{p,1}\}_{i,p\geq 1}$ is linearly independent in the knot concordance group. We arrange that these examples lie arbitrarily deep in the solvable and bipolar filtrations of the knot concordance group, denoted by $\{F_n\}$ and $\{B_n\}$ respectively. As a consequence, this result cannot be reached by any combination of algebraic concordance invariants, Casson-Gordon invariants, and Heegaard-Floer invariants such as tau, epsilon, and Upsilon. We give two applications of this result. First, for any n>=0, th…
We show that there exists a $\mathbb{Z}^\infty$-summand in the subgroup of the knot concordance group generated by knots with trivial Alexander polynomial. To this end we use the invariant Upsilon $Υ$ recently introduced by Ozsváth, Stipsicz and Szabó using knot Floer homology. We partially compute $Υ$ of $(n,1)$-cable of the Whitehead double of the trefoil knot. For this computation of $Υ$, we determine a sufficient condition for two satellite knots to have identical $Υ$ for any pattern with nonzero winding number.
By considering negative surgeries on a knot $K$ in $S^3$, we derive a lower bound to the non-orientable slice genus $γ_4(K)$ in terms of the signature $σ(K)$ and the concordance invariants $V_i(\overline{K})$, which strengthens a previous bound given by Batson, and which coincides with Ozsváth-Stipsicz-Szabó's bound in terms of their $\upsilon$ invariant for L-space knots and quasi-alternating knots. A curious feature of our bound is superadditivity, implying, for instance, that the bound on the stable non-orientable genus is sometimes better than the one on $γ_4(K)$.
