Even though polar codes were adopted in the latest 5G cellular standard, they still have the fundamental problem of high decoding latency. Aiming at solving this problem, a fast simplified successive cancellation (Fast-SSC) decoder based on the new class of sequence repetition (SR) nodes has been proposed recently in \cite{sr2020} and has a lower required number of time steps than other existing Fast-SSC decoders in theory. This paper focuses on the hardware implementation of this SR node-based fast-SSC (SRFSC) decoder. The implementation results for a polar code with length 1024 and code rate 1/2 show that our implementation has a throughput of $505$ Mbps on an Altera Stratix IV FPGA, which is 17.9% higher with respect to the previous work.
This paper characterizes the latency of the simplified successive-cancellation (SSC) decoding scheme for polar codes under hardware resource constraints. In particular, when the number of processing elements $P$ that can perform SSC decoding operations in parallel is limited, as is the case in practice, the latency of SSC decoding is $O\left(N^{1-1/μ}+\frac{N}{P}\log_2\log_2\frac{N}{P}\right)$, where $N$ is the block length of the code and $μ$ is the scaling exponent of the channel. Three direct consequences of this bound are presented. First, in a fully-parallel implementation where $P=\frac{…
Constructing efficient low-rate error-correcting codes with low-complexity encoding and decoding have become increasingly important for applications involving ultra-low-power devices such as Internet-of-Things (IoT) networks. To this end, schemes based on concatenating the state-of-the-art codes at moderate rates with repetition codes have emerged as practical solutions deployed in various standards. In this paper, we propose a novel mechanism for concatenating outer polar codes with inner repetition codes which we refer to as polar coded repetition. More specifically, we propose to transmit a…
This work analyzes the latency of the simplified successive cancellation (SSC) decoding scheme for polar codes proposed by Alamdar-Yazdi and Kschischang. It is shown that, unlike conventional successive cancellation decoding, where latency is linear in the block length, the latency of SSC decoding is sublinear. More specifically, the latency of SSC decoding is $O(N^{1-1/μ})$, where $N$ is the block length and $μ$ is the scaling exponent of the channel, which captures the speed of convergence of the rate to capacity. Numerical results demonstrate the tightness of the bound and show that most of…
Concatenating the state-of-the-art codes at moderate rates with repetition codes has emerged as a practical solution deployed in various standards for ultra-low-power devices such as in Internet-of-Things (IoT) networks. In this paper, we propose a novel concatenation mechanism for such applications which need to operate at very low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. In the proposed scheme, the outer code is a hybrid polar code constructed in two stages, one with a binary kernel and another also with a binary kernel but applied over a binary extension field. The inner code is a non-binary mul…
Due to the low-latency and high-reliability requirements of 5G, low-complexity node-based successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding has received considerable attention for use in 5G communications systems. By identifying special constituent codes in the decoding tree and immediately decoding these, node-based SCL decoding provides a significant reduction in decoding latency compared to conventional SCL decoding. However, while there exists many types of nodes, the current node-based SCL decoders are limited by the lack of a more generalized node that can efficiently decode a larger number of…
Fast SC decoding overcomes the latency caused by the serial nature of the SC decoding by identifying new nodes in the upper levels of the SC decoding tree and implementing their fast parallel decoders. In this work, we first present a novel sequence repetition node corresponding to a particular class of bit sequences. Most existing special node types are special cases of the proposed sequence repetition node. Then, a fast parallel decoder is proposed for this class of node. To further speed up the decoding process of general nodes outside this class, a threshold-based hard-decision-aided schem…
This paper explores list decoding of convolutional and polar codes for short messages such as those found in the 5G physical broadcast channel. A cyclic redundancy check (CRC) is used to select a codeword from a list of likely codewords. One example in the 5G standard encodes a 32-bit message with a 24-bit CRC and a 512-bit polar code with additional bits added by repetition to achieve a very low rate of 32/864. This paper shows that optimizing the CRC length improves the $E_b/N_0$ performance of this polar code, where $E_b/N_0$ is the ratio of the energy per data bit to the noise power spectr…
We consider the usage of finite-length polar codes for the Gaussian multiple access channel (GMAC) with a finite number of users. Based on the interleave-division multipleaccess (IDMA) concept, we implement an iterative detection and decoding non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) receiver that benefits from a low complexity, while scaling (almost) linearly with the amount of active users. We further show the conceptual simplicity of the belief propagation (BP)-based decoder in a step-by-step illustration of its construction. Beyond its conceptual simplicity, this approach benefits from an impr…
