We present Atacama Large Millimeter/Sub-millimeter Array observations of the candidate jet-ISM interaction zones near the black hole X-ray binaries GRS 1758$-$258 and 1E 1740.7$-$2942. Using these data, we map the molecular line emission in the regions, detecting emission from the HCN [$J=1-0$], HCO$^+$ [$J=1-0$], SiO [$J=2-1$], CS [$J=2-1$], $^{13}$CO [$J=1-0$], C$^{18}$O [$J=1-0$], HNCO [$J=4_{0,4}-3_{0,3}$], HNCO [$J=5_{0,5}-4_{0,4}$], and CH$_3$OH [$J=2_{1,1}-1_{1,0}$] molecular transitions. Through examining the morphological, spectral, and kinematic properties of this emission, we identify molecular structures that may trace jet-driven cavities in the gas surrounding these systems. Our results from the GRS 1758$-$258 region in particular, are consistent with recent work, which postulated the presence of a jet-blown cocoon structure in deep radio continuum maps of the region. Using these newly discovered molecular structures as calorimeters, we estimate the time averaged jet power from these systems, finding $(1.1-5.7)\times10^{36}{\rm erg\,s}^{-1}$ over $0.12-0.31$ Myr for GRS 1758$-$258 and $(0.7-3.5)\times10^{37}{\rm erg\,s}^{-1}$ over $0.10-0.26$ Myr for 1E 1740.7$-$2942. Additionally, the spectral line characteristics of the detected emission place these molecular structures in the central molecular zone of our Galaxy, thereby constraining the distances to the black hole X-ray binaries to be $8.0\pm1.0$ kpc. Overall, our analysis solidifies the diagnostic capacity of molecular lines, and highlights how astro-chemistry can both identify jet-ISM interaction zones and probe jet feedback from Galactic X-ray binaries.
The family links between radio galaxies and microquasars have been strongly strengthened thanks to a new common phenomenon: the presence of extended winged features. The first detection of such structures in a Galactic microquasar, recently reported in Nature Communications (http://rdcu.be/zgX8), widens the already known analogy between both kinds of outflow sources (Martí et al. 2017). This observational result also has potential implications affecting the black hole merger scenarios that contribute to the gravitational wave background.
This paper introduces a biparametric family of Lyapunov functions for a non-linear mathematical model based on the FitzHugh-Nagumo equations able to reproduce some main features of the X-ray bursting behaviour exhibited by the microquasar GRS 1915+105. These functions are useful to investigate the properties of equilibrium points and allow us to demonstrate a theorem on the global stability. The transition between bursting and stable behaviour is also analyzed.
Using the Very Long Baseline Array, we have measured a trigonometric parallax for the micro quasar GRS 1915+105, which contains a black hole and a K-giant companion. This yields a direct distance estimate of 8.6 (+2.0,-1.6) kpc and a revised estimate for the mass of the black hole of 12.4 (+2.0,-1.8) Msun. GRS 1915+105 is at about the same distance as some HII regions and water masers associated with high-mass star formation in the Sagittarius spiral arm of the Galaxy. The absolute proper motion of GRS 1915+105 is -3.19 +/- 0.03 mas/y and -6.24 +/- 0.05 mas/y toward the east and north, respect…
Microquasars, Galactic binary systems showing extended and variable radio emission, are potential gamma-ray emitters. Indications of gamma-ray transient episodes have been reported in at least two systems, Cyg X-1 and Cyg X-3. The identification of additional gamma-ray emitting microquasars is key for a better understanding of these systems. Very-high-energy gamma-ray emission from microquasars has been predicted to happen during periods of transient outbursts potentially connected with the formation of a jet-like outflow. Contemporaneous observations using the H.E.S.S. telescope array and the…
Context. GRS 1758-258 is one of two prototypical microquasars towards the Galactic Center direction discovered almost a quarter of a century ago. The system remains poorly studied in the optical domain due to its counterpart being a very faint and absorbed target in a crowded region of the sky. Aims. Our aim is to investigate GRS 1758-258 in order to shed light on the nature of the stellar binary components. In particular, the main physical parameters of the donor star, such as the mass or the spectral type, are not yet well constrained. Methods. GRS 1758-258 has remained so far elusive to opt…
The microquasar GRS 1915+105 is known to exhibit a very variable X-ray emission on different time scales and patterns. We propose a system of two ordinary differential equations, adapted from the Hindmarsh-Rose model, with two dynamical variables x(t), y(t) and an input constant parameter J_0, to which we added a random white noise, whose solutions for the x(t) variable reproduce consistently the X-ray light curves of several variability classes as well as the development of low frequency Quasi-Periodic Oscillations (QPO). We show that changing only the value of J_0 the system moves from stabl…

Theoretical and observational work show that jets from AGN can trigger star formation. However, in the Milky Way the first -and so far- only clear case of relativistic jets inducing star formation has been found in the surroundings of the microquasar GRS 1915+105. Here we summarize the multiwavelength observations of two compact star formation IRAS sources axisymmetrically located and aligned with the position angle of the sub-arcsec relativistic jets from the stellar black hole binary GRS 1915+105 (Mirabel & Rodriguez 1994). The observations of these two star forming regions at centimeter (Ro…
We present the spectral and timing evolution of the persistent black hole X-ray binary GRS 1758-258 based on almost 12 years of observations using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer Proportional Counter Array. While the source was predominantly found in the hard state during this time, it entered the thermally dominated soft state seven times. In the soft state GRS 1758-258 shows a strong decline in flux above 3 keV rather than the pivoting flux around 10 keV more commonly shown by black hole transients. In its 3-20 keV hardness intensity diagram, GRS 1758-258 shows a hysteresis of hard and soft …
The X-ray emission from the microquasar GRS 1515+105 shows, together with a very complex variability on different time scales, the presence of low-frequency quasi periodic oscillations (LFQPO) at frequencies lower than 30 Hz. In this paper, we demonstrate that these oscillations can be consistently and naturally obtained as solutions of a system of two ordinary differential equations that is able to reproduce almost all variability classes of GRS 1515+105. We modified the Hindmarsh-Rose model and obtained a system with two dynamical variables x(t), y(t), where the first one represents the X-ra…
We present a temporal analysis of a BeppoSAX observation of GRS 1915+105 performed on April 13, 1999 when the source was in the rho class, which is characterised by quasi-regular bursting activity. The aim of the present work is to confirm and extend the validity of the results obtained with a BeppoSAX observation performed on October 2000 on the recurrence time of the burst and on the hard X-ray delay. We divided the entire data set into several series, each corresponding to a satellite orbit, and performed the Fourier and wavelet analysis and the limit cycle mapping technique using the count…
The complex time evolution in the X-ray light curves of the peculiar black hole binary GRS 1915+105 can be obtained as solutions of a non-linear system of ordinary differential equations derived form the Hindmarsch-Rose model and modified introducing an input function depending on time. In the first paper, assuming a constant input with a superposed white noise, we reproduced light curves of the classes rho, chi, and delta. We use this mathematical model to reproduce light curves, including some interesting details, of other eight GRS 1915+105 variability classes either considering a variable i…
We present Atacama Large Millimetre/Sub-Millimetre Array (ALMA) observations of IRAS 19132+1035, a candidate jet-ISM interaction zone near the black hole X-ray binary (BHXB) GRS 1915+105. With these ALMA observations (combining data from the 12 m array and the Atacama Compact Array), we map the molecular line emission across the IRAS 19132+1035 region. We detect emission from the $^{12}$CO [$J=2-1$], $^{13}$CO [$ν=0$, $J=2-1$], C$^{18}$O [$J=2-1$], ${\rm H}_{2}{\rm CO}$ [$J=3_{0,3}-2_{0,2}$], ${\rm H}_{2}{\rm CO}$ [$J=3_{2,2}-2_{2,1}$], ${\rm H}_{2}{\rm CO}$ [$J=3_{2,1}-2_{2,0}$], SiO [$ν=0$, …
Microquasars are potential $γ$-ray emitters. Indications of transient episodes of $γ$-ray emission were recently reported in at least two systems: Cyg X-1 and Cyg X-3. The identification of additional $γ$-ray-emitting microquasars is required to better understand how $γ$-ray emission can be produced in these systems. Theoretical models have predicted very high-energy (VHE) $γ$-ray emission from microquasars during periods of transient outburst. Observations reported herein were undertaken with the objective of observing a broadband flaring event in the $γ$-ray and X-ray bands. Contemporaneous …
The temporal behaviour of X-rays from some AGN and microquasars is thought to arise from the rapid collapse of the hot, inner parts of their accretion discs. The collapse can occur over the radial infall timescale of the inner accretion disc. However, estimates of this timescale are hindered by a lack of knowledge of the operative viscosity in the collisionless plasma comprising the inner disc. We use published simulation results for cosmic ray diffusion through turbulent magnetic fields to arrive at a viscosity prescription appropriate to hot accretion discs. We construct simplified disc mode…

Context. Astrophysical jets are ubiquitous in the Universe on all scales, but their large-scale dynamics and evolution in time are hard to observe since they usually develop at a very slow pace. Aims. We aim to obtain the first observational proof of the expected large-scale evolution and interaction with the environment in an astrophysical jet. Only jets from microquasars offer a chance to witness the real-time, full-jet evolution within a human lifetime, since they combine a 'short', few parsec length with relativistic velocities. Methods. The methodology of this work is based on a systemati…
Nonlinear time series analysis has been widely used to search for signatures of low-dimensional chaos in light curves emanating from astrophysical bodies. A particularly popular example is the microquasar GRS 1915+105, whose irregular but systematic X-ray variability has been well studied using data acquired by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. With a view to building simpler models of X-ray variability, attempts have been made to classify the light curves of GRS 1915+105 as chaotic or stochastic. Contrary to some of the earlier suggestions, after careful analysis, we find no evidence for chaos…
Aims. The prototypical microquasar GRS 1758-258 exhibits large-scale morphological changes in radio maps over time which have been attributed to the rise of instabilities. Here, we investigate whether these effects could be attributed to jet precession instead. Methods. We used new and archival radio maps to fit a kinematic jet precession model. The value of the parameters thus obtained were analysed in order to get constraints on the physical properties of the GRS 1758-258 system. Their consistency with different theories of the origins for the jet precession, such as Lense-Thirring effect and…
The microquasar GRS~1915+105 is known for its spectacular discrete ejections. They occur unexpectedly, thus their inception escapes direct observation. It has been shown that the X-ray flux increases in the hours leading up to a major ejection. In this article, we consider the serendipitous interferometric monitoring of a modest version of a discrete ejection described in Reid et al. (2014) that would have otherwise escaped detection in daily radio light curves. The observation begins $\sim 1$ hour after the onset of the ejection, providing unprecedented accuracy on the estimate of the ejectio…
