We investigate the temperature ($T$)-evolution of orbital anisotropy and its effect on spectral function and optical conductivity in Ce$_{2}$IrIn$_{8}$, using a first principles dynamical mean field theory combined with density functional theory. The orbital anisotropy develops by lowering $T$ and it is intensified below a temperature corresponding to the crystalline-electric field (CEF) splitting size. Interestingly, the depopulation of CEF excited states leaves a spectroscopic signature, "shoulder", in the $T$-dependent spectral function at the Fermi level. From the two-orbital Anderson impurity model, we demonstrate that CEF splitting size is the key ingredient influencing the emergence and the position of the "shoulder". Besides the two conventional temperature scales $T_{K}$ and $T^{*}$, we introduce an additional temperature scale to deal with the orbital anisotropy in heavy fermion systems.
We have grown the single crystals of LaAu$_{2}$In$_{4}$ and CeAu$_{2}$In$_{4}$ by high temperature solution method and report on the anisotropic magnetic behavior of CeAu$_{2}$In$_{4}$ . The compounds crystallize in an orthorhombic structure with space group \textit {Pnma}. LaAu$_{2}$In$_{4}$ shows a Pauli-paramagnetic behavior. CeAu$_{2}$In$_{4}$ do not order down to 1.8 K. The easy axis of magnetization for CeAu$_{2}$In$_{4}$ is along [010] direction. The magnetization data is analyzed on the basis of crystalline electric field (CEF) model.
We report temperature dependent magnetization and neutron diffraction measurements on the corundum related magnetoelectric antiferromagnet Mn$_{4}$Ta$_{2}$O$_{9}$. Measurements performed on a single crystalline specimen reveal that the magnetization is anisotropic, and a weak ferromagnetic component emerges well within the antiferromagnetically ordered state. Powder neutron diffraction measurements indicate that the magnetic structure comprises of antiferromagnetically coupled ferromagnetic chains of Mn$^{2+}$ spins aligned along the trigonal $c$ axis, in contrast to that reported in other iso…
By many-body quantum-chemical calculations, we investigate the role of two structural effects - local ligand distortions and the anisotropic Cd-ion coordination - on the magnetic state of Cd2Os2O7, a spin S=3/2 pyrochlore. We find that these effects strongly compete, rendering the magnetic interactions and ordering crucially depend on these geometrical features. Without trigonal distortions a large easy-plane magnetic anisotropy develops. Their presence, however, reverses the sign of the zero-field splitting and causes a large easy-axis anisotropy (D = -6.8 meV), which in conjunction with the …
Neutron scattering experiments have been performed to elucidate magnetic properties of the quasicrystal approximant Au$_{70}$Si$_{17}$Tb$_{13}$, consisting of icosahedral spin clusters in a body-centered-cubic lattice. Bulk magnetic measurements performed on the single crystalline sample unambiguously confirm long-range ordering at $T_{\rm C} = 11.6 \pm 1$ K. In contrast to the simple ferromagnetic response in the bulk measurements, single crystal neutron diffraction confirms a formation of intriguing non-collinear and non-coplanar magnetic order. The magnetic moment direction was found to be …
Angular magnetotransport measurements have been performed to tackle the origin of the magnetoresistance in the quasi-1D Hollandite Ba1.2Rh8O16. Three samples of different impurities amount were measured. We observe that the low temperature resistivity upturn is not due to a charge density wave transition, and a dominant role of impurities scattering for low temperature transport properties is instead demonstrated. The components of magnetoresistance were separated by using the Kohler plot and the angular dependency of the resistance under magnetic field. It shows the major contribution of an i…
Electronic and magnetic properties of the heavily H-doped LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$H$_x$ $(x\sim0.5 )$ were studied in the framework of the density functional theory combined with the dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT). We found a stripe-like-ordered structure of hydrogen and oxygen atoms, as a ground state, with the same configuration as the antiferromagnetic (AF) order. The new configuration could explain the existing experimental results related to the heavily H-doped LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$H$_x$, such as an in-plane electronic anisotropy and a non-uniform magnetic behavior. A significant anisotropy was …
We have performed X-ray powder diffraction, magnetization, electrical resistivity, heat capacity and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to investigate the physical properties of the intermetallic series of compounds CeCuBi$_{2-x}$Sb$_{x}$. These compounds crystallize in a tetragonal structure with space group $P4/nmm$ and present antiferromagnetic transition temperatures ranging from 3.6 K to 16 K. Remarkably, the magnetization easy axis changes along the series, which is closely related to the variations of the tetragonal crystalline electric field (CEF) parameters. This evolution was analyze…
The anisotropy in electrical transport and thermal behavior of single crystalline R$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ series of compounds is presented. These compounds crystallize in a tetragonal structure with space gropup P4/mmm. The nonmagnetic counterparts of the series namely Y$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ and Lu$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$show a behavior consistent with the low density of states at the fermi level. In Y$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$, a possibility of charge density wave transition is observed at $\approx$ 30 K. Gd$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ and Er$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ show a presence of short range correlation above the magnetic ordering temp…
I present a study of the influence of disorder in thin magnetic films on the switching behavior of small magnetic cells of well defined shape and size. The disorder considered arises from randomly oriented crystalline grains of different shape, size, and crystalline orientation which gives rise to locally fluctuating intrinsic anisotropy directions and strengths. The study comprises a theoretical investigation of a disordered Stoner Wohlfarth model, as well as micromagnetic simulations. I show that the fluctuations in the total anisotropy and therefore in the switching fields are controlled by…
CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$ is an unusual example of a stoichiometric heavy fermion ferromagnet, which can be cleanly tuned by hydrostatic pressure to a quantum critical point. In order to understand the origin of this anomalous behavior, we have characterized the magnetic ordering and crystalline electric field (CEF) scheme of this system. While magnetic Bragg peaks are not resolved in neutron powder diffraction, coherent oscillations are observed in zero-field $μ$SR below $T_{\rm C}$, which are consistent with in-plane ferromagnetic ordering consisting of reduced Ce moments. From analyzing the magnetic s…
We have successfully grown high quality single crystals of SrFe$_2$As$_2$ and A$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$(A=Sr, Ba) using flux method. The resistivity, specific heat and Hall coefficient have been measured. For parent compound SrFe$_2$As$_2$, an anisotropic resistivity with $ρ_c$ / $ρ_{ab}$ as large as 130 is obtained at low temperatures. A sharp drop in both in-plane and out-plane resistivity due to the SDW instability is observed below 200 K. The angular dependence of in-plane magnetoresistance shows 2-fold symmetry with field rotating within ab plane below SDW transition temperature. Thi…
The magnetic behavior of single-crystal Ho$_2$PdSi$_3$, crystallizing in an AlB$_2$-derived hexagonal structure, is investigated by magnetic susceptibility ($χ$) and electrical resistivity ($ρ$) measurements along two directions. There is no dramatic anisotropy in the high temperature Curie-Weiss parameter or in the $ρ$ and isothermal magnetization data, though there is a noticeable anisotropy in the magnitude of $ρ$ between two perpendicular orientations. The degree of anisotropy is overall less prominent than in the Gd (which is an S-state ion!) and Tb analogues. A point of emphasis is that …
We investigate the effects of an applied magnetic field on the magnetic properties of the antiferromagnet GdCoIn$_5$. The prominent anisotropy observed in the susceptibility below $T_N$ is rapidly suppressed by a field of just a few Tesla. Further evidence of this low energy-scale is obtained from magnetoresistance and magnetostriction experiments. The lattice lenght, particulary, shows a sudden change below 2 Tesla when the magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the crystallographic $\hat{c}$-axis. The experimental results as a whole can be attributed to a small but non negligible higher-…
The crystalline electric field (CEF) of Ce3+ in trigonal symmetry has recently become of some relevance, for instance, in the search of frustrated magnetic systems. Fortunately, it is one of the CEF case in which a manageable analytic solution can be obtained. Here, we present this solution for the general case, and use this result to determine the CEF scheme of the new compound CeIr3Ge7 with the help of T-dependent susceptibility and isothermal magnetization measurements. The resulting CEF parameters B20 = 34.4 K, B40 = 0.82 K and B43 = 67.3 K correspond to an exceptional large CEF splittings…
We propose an experimental method to examine the in-plane anisotropy of electronic structure in layered conductors. In the method, we measure the interlayer magnetoresistance as a function of in-plane magnetic field orientation. We applied it to an organic Dirac fermion system a-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 to experimentally determine the orientation of the anisotropic Dirac cones. It is concluded that the long axis of the elliptic constant-energy contours of the Dirac cone is tilted by approximately -30 deg from the crystalline a-axis to b-axis under hydrostatic pressures. Additionally, we observed a signat…
CeCd$_3$P$_3$ and CeCd$_3$As$_3$ compounds adopt the hexagonal ScAl$_3$C$_3$-type structure, where magnetic Ce ions on a triangular lattice order antiferromagnetically below $T_\text{N} \sim$0.42~K. Their crystalline electric field (CEF) level scheme has been determined by fitting magnetic susceptibility curves, magnetization isotherms, and Schottky anomalies in specific heat. The calculated results, incorporating the CEF excitation, Zeeman splitting, and molecular field, are in good agreement with the experimental data. The CEF model, with Ce$^{3+}$ ions in a trigonal symmetry, explains the s…
We investigate the magnetic field dependence of the physical properties of f^2-configuration systems with a crystalline-electric field (CEF) singlet ground state, which gives rise to a non- Fermi liquid (NFL) fixed point due to the competition between the Kondo-Yosida singlet and CEF singlet states. On the basis of the numerical renormalization group method, we find that the magnetic field breaks this NFL fixed point via two mechanisms: one causing the polarization of f-electrons and the other giving the "channel" anisotropy. These two mechanisms induce a difference in the magnetic field depen…
The transferred hyperfine interaction between nuclear and electron spins in an heavy fermion material depends on the hybridization between the $f$-electron orbitals and those surrounding a distant nucleus. In CeMIn$_5$ (M=Rh, Ir, Co), both the hyperfine coupling to the two indium sites as well as the crystalline electric field at the Ce are strongly dependent on the transition metal. We measure a series of CeRh$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$In$_5$ crystals and find that the hyperfine coupling reflects the orbital anisotropy of the ground state Ce 4$f$ wavefunction. These findings provide direct proof that the …
We present results of the magneto-crystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) calculations for chemically ordered $L1_0$ CoPt and FePt alloys taking into account the effects of strong electronic correlations and spin-orbit coupling. The local spin density + Hubbard U approximation (LSDA+U) is shown to provide a consistent picture of the magnetic ground state properties when intra-atomic Coulomb correlations are included for both 3$d$ and 5$d$ elements. Our results demonstrate significant and complex contribution of correlation effects to large MAE of these material.
We report normal and superconducting properties of the Rashba-type noncentrosymmetric com- pound CaIrSi3, using single crystalline samples with nearly 100% superconducting volume fraction. The electronic density of states revealed by the hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy can be well explained by the relativistic first-principle band calculation. This indicates that strong spin-orbit interaction indeed affects the electronic states of this compound. The obtained H - T phase diagram exhibits only approximately 10% anisotropy, indicating that the superconducting properties are almost three di…
We have measured the magnetization of rare-earth chiral magnets Yb(Ni$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$)$_{3}$Al$_{9}$ for $x$=0 and 0.06 up to 14.5 T. Magnetization for the field direction $H \parallel c$, which is the hard axis at low temperatures and low fields, overtakes the easy axis magnetization for $H \perp c$ above $\sim$4 T. We analyzed this overtaking of the magnetization curves by considering a crystalline electric field model. It is shown that the $B_{66}$ term, which connects the $|\pm5/2 \rangle$ and the $|\mp7/2\rangle$ states through the off-diagonal matrix element, is responsible for the charact…
Single crystals of HoIr$_2$Si$_2$ with the body-centered ThCr$_2$Si$_2$-type structure ($I4/mmm$) were grown by Bridgman method from indium flux. Single crystal structure determination yielded a Si-z position of 0.378(1) in the structure. We excluded the presence of the high temperature phase with the primitive CaBe$_2$Ge$_2$-type structure ($P 4/n m m$) by powder X-ray diffraction. Magnetic measurements on the single crystals yield a Neel temperature of $T_{\rm N}=22\,\rm K$. In the inverse magnetic susceptibility a strong anisotropy with Weiss temperatures $Θ_{W}^{001}=26\,\rm K$ and $Θ_{W}^…
Ferromagnetic compound PrRu2Si2 exhibits a giant magnetocrystalline anisotropy of about 400 T. Its ordered moment below Tc=14K reaches 2.7 mB and is parallel to [0 0 1] crystalline direction. We have attributed the magnetism of PrRu2S2 to the Pr ions and performed calculations of the fine electronic structure of the Pr ion in the tetragonal symmetry, relevant to PrRu2Si2 taking into account crystal-field and inter-site, spin-dependent exchange interactions. Spin-dependent interactions have been taken into account by means of molecular-field approximation. The derived energy level scheme is ass…
We clarify the role of crystalline electric field (CEF) induced magnetic anisotropy in the ground state and spin-wave spectrum of cubic rare-earth materials with dominating isotropic magnetic exchange interactions. In particular we study the hexaboride NdB_6 which is shown to exhibit strong spin-quadrupolar coupling. The CEF scheme is analyzed and a non-collinear magnetization response is found. The spin orientation in the antiferromagnetically ordered ground-state is identified. Moreover, the spin excitations are evaluated and in agreement with inelastic neutron scattering a suppression of on…
The magnetic properties of perovskite CaVO3 single crystals have been studied by means of magnetoresistance r(T, H) and magnetization M(H) measurements in fields to 18T. At 2 K, the magnetoresistance is positive and a maximum value of Dr(18T)/r(0) = 16.5% is found for H//a. The magnetization exhibits a smooth increase at 2 K, reaching values of M(18T) = 0.03, 0.05, 0.17 mB/f.u. for H//a, H//b, and H//c, respectively. This anisotropy found in M(H) is consistent with that observed for Dr(H//a) > Dr(H//b) > Dr(H//c). These results can be interpreted in terms of the field-dependent scattering mech…
We investigated the anisotropic magnetic properties of CePd$_2$As$_2$ by magnetic, thermal and electrical transport studies. X-ray diffraction confirmed the tetragonal ThCr$_2$Si$_2$-type structure and the high-quality of the single crystals. Magnetisation and magnetic susceptibility data taken along the different crystallographic directions evidence a huge crystalline electric field (CEF) induced Ising-type magneto-crystalline anisotropy with a large $c$-axis moment and a small in-plane moment at low temperature. A detailed CEF analysis based on the magnetic susceptibility data indicates an a…
Single crystals of RCo$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$ (R = Y, La-Nd, Sm-Tm) were grown using a self-flux method and were characterized by room-temperature powder x-ray diffraction; anisotropic, temperature and field dependent magnetization; temperature and field dependent, in-plane resistivity; and specific heat measurements. In this series, the majority of the moment-bearing members order antiferromagnetically; YCo$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$ and LaCo$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$ are non-moment-bearing. Ce is trivalent in CeCo$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$ at high temperatures, and exhibits an enhanced electronic specific heat coefficient due to Kondo e…
Detailed magnetization, specific heat, and $^7$Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on single crystals of the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev magnet $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ are reported. At high temperatures, {\cred anisotropy of the magnetization is reflected by the different Curie-Weiss temperatures for different field directions}, in agreement with the combination of a ferromagnetic Kitaev interaction ($K$) and a negative off-diagonal anisotropy ($Γ$) as two leading terms in the spin Hamiltonian. At low temperatures, magnetic fields applied along $a$ or $c$ have only a weak effect on the system…
